Truth or Tequila

Rate this book
A steamy romantic comedy. Seb's the most famous baseball player in the world. Sophie's not impressed. Game on.

Sophie
When we graduated from college, my friends and I made a pact that we would only play Truth or Tequila five more times—at each of our bachelorette parties. Tonight’s number four and it couldn’t come at a worse time. I have a meeting with a new client tomorrow. I can’t be hungover. Unfortunately, I’ve never played this game without ending up that way. I’m already at a disadvantage with the client. It’s the professional baseball team in town. I’m not much of a sports fan. I don’t even know who the players are, but I guess I’ll worry about that tomorrow. Tonight, it seems that, once again, I’m destined for tequila and bad decisions.

Seb
Don’t get me wrong, I like being a professional athlete. I just wish it didn’t come with so much fame. People are always staring at me and tonight’s no exception. All eyes are on me as I walk into the bar—except for one pair. And they’re attached to a gorgeous woman. When she finally looks up from her phone, she catches me ogling her and rolls her eyes. I don’t think she has any idea who I am. Damn, that turns me on. I spend most of the night trying to figure out how to talk to her when suddenly she lands in my lap. She’s playing a drinking game with her friends and has to get me to kiss her to win. I want to kiss her—passionately—but not when she’s this flat-out drunk. I’d at least like her to remember our first kiss.

The Next Day
Sophie
I’m painfully hungover. All I want to do is get done with this meeting, so I can go home and have my friends tell me about the guy I tried to drunkenly seduce last night. All I remember are his eyes—his soft, beautiful eyes. I’m on the field with my new client watching the players practice when the catcher jumps up from behind the plate and starts walking toward me. When he pulls up his mask, the eyes I’ve been thinking about all morning are staring at me. “Sophie?” he says as a smile starts curling at the corners of his mouth.

3.5⭐
Genre ~ contemporary romance
Series ~ Grand Slam #1
Setting ~ Florida
Publication date ~ book ~ September 2, 2021, audio ~ April 11, 2023
Est Page Count ~ 250 (39 chapters +e)
Audio length ~ 6 hours 1 minutes
Narrator ~ Jamie Renell, Holly Chandler
POV ~ dual 1st
Featuring ~ pro baseball player, PR consultant, insta-lust, secret relationship, workplace romance, minimal steamage

Sophie & Seb meet in a bar during her best friends bachelorette party when she gets drunk and plants a smooch on him. Hello tequila, nice to meet ya. Then the next day they see each other again her first day on the job as a PR consultant for the team that Seb plays for.

How Seb interacts with his fans that are children is absolutely adorable. I thought Seb was actually pretty great for most of the book, except for not telling a secret to Sophie that was really a pretty lame one. Since there's the word truth in the title I'd except the characters to speak it and not skirt around it, especially when you're already feeling the feels for someone and it seems it's a deal breaker for them. Some might say he's a bit overprotective right out of the gate, but I didn't mind it so much. Although I do feel it was a bit over the top in one instance. Sophie is big on independence and she certainly proved she can take care of herself.

There's a side plot about sexism and sexual harassment that took away from the natural progression of our main characters getting together. I understand it has to do with the whole reason behind her taking the job with the team, but for such a short book I could have went for a little less of it. And, also, this is a temp job for her, so why can't they keep their hands off each other for a few short weeks until it's no longer forbidden?

There's a mix of good side characters and some you wish would run their toe into coffee table.

Overall, a quick, mostly enjoyable, read that's light on the steamage for a book marketed as steamy. I need more than one scene for this to ring true. I loved Donna's book The Runaway Bride of Blitzen Bay, so I'd for sure read her work again.

I was able to listen to a copy as well.
Narration notes:
They mostly did a good job. Their opposite sex voices leave a little to be desired.

Should you read this?

Yes, and no. Some people will be offended and some won’t.

Trigger warnings for mention of sexism, homophobia, sexual assault, and…drunk party stuff? idk

anyways.

A BASEBALL LOVE INTEREST YES PLS THATS SO HOT

he may seem sexist or misogynistic at times by always wanting to protect her and walk her to her door down the hall and stuff because it issss a little bit overbearing i must say but the writing style was good and i loved who we had as a main character WHICH BY THE WAY…

🚨 feminist main character. badass “i can do things myself” woman…HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK she doesn’t let anyone push her around

🏳️‍🌈 gay rep, main character’s (female lead’s) best friend #2 (she has two i guess you could say) is married to a man and they have lots of dialogue with her in this book, it’s mentioned. even tho most of the characters are straight, i was at least happy to see that.
there’s one cuban POC in this i think? maybe more? i only caught one tbh

out of 10 for diversity? i give it a 1/10 because i’ve seen 11/10 diverse books. it’s not a bad thing, it’s just that some people would choose to not read this book if they knew that so i decided to mention it. it’s not full het cis straight, but..yeah mostly. also mostly white-?

rich baseball guy with mighty fine abs and a sexy ass haircut with a white blonde feminist girl who plays hard to get and keeps her distance.

i see fire.

Cute enough but randomly had a few typos that made this English major cringe. Did anyone proof it before publishing it? 🤷‍♀️

There was also a fair amount of insta-lust/love and a whole lot of issues with the overall pacing of the book. IE: Characters went from making dinner to loading the dishwasher all while having the same conversation. There were several times I had to stop and re-read to confirm more time has passed than what’s originally been described. It was… odd.

Also, there wasn’t a whole lot of “steam” nor a whole lot of jokes and laughs for a self-described “steamy romantic comedy.” I’m not complaining as the lack of either didn’t really take anything away from the story but it is a little bit of a bait & switch tactic to throw at us readers.

Otherwise Sophie and Seb have cute chemistry and Sophie and Maisie have a fun friendship. I liked it enough for a fun, quick read.

"'I didn't know she was yours.' I take another toward him—until I'm inches from his face. 'She's not mine. She definitely not yours. She belongs to herself. She's here to do a job—just like you. Treat her with respect.'"

many thanks to NetGalley and Donna Schwartze for the arc!!

^when he's respectful and protective>>. this man really never let her out of his reach from the moment they met, always making sure she was safe. at first i did think he was pretty self-entitled and stuck up, but he actually isn't!!! he has he reasons for the way he is and you get to know sophie and seb so well and understand why.

this book is probably the funniest one i've read so far. i caught myself laughing out loud too many times and too late at night. her friends are crazy, they're crazy, everyone just knows how to have a good time. never a dull moment in this book. radiates perfect rom-com energy.

they are both very strong characters as well as the supporting ones. you can really tell how unique they are and how they differentiate from each other, which brings out specific sides in them. maisie and roman are the cutest of friends, joe coming into a close third towards the end. and when seb comes into their family you know he really fits in.

no one can stop sophie. she slayed this book and had everyone at their knees for her. not taking anyone's bs for real and always standing her ground. definitely wouldn't wanna cross her as a wsm HAHAH

one thing i will say is that this book claims to be "steamy" but it really isn't. there's only one scene and it doesn't go into detail so i wouldn't really label it as so. there also wasn't much that made this a in depth love story or story in general. they connect from the bat, LOL CAUSE HE PLAYS BASEBALL, but honestly it did make sense. it was cute for them but nothing special. they like each other, get together, have a problem, solve it. let me tell you, the person who should've groveled doesn't and it kinda made me mad because the other person did with having no good reason to. but ugh ofc it's a miscommunication too.

but considering everything, i completely had so much fun reading this and am starting raine out as soon as i finish this review. i hope a superstar baseball guy with "a chest carved by michelangelo with glorious muscles" and nice hair and eyes will let me into a VIP bar that's full and fall in love with me after i roll my eyes at him <3

addictiveness: 4.75/5 read in less than a day...
sadness: 1/5 not a sad book
characters: 4.25/5 i did dislike most of the team
setting: 3.5/5 not described too much
plot: 4/5 short and sweet
plot execution: 3.75/5 could've been better
writing: 4.5/5 easy and flowy to read and soso funny
romance: 4.5/5 especially from seb's pov
comedy/banter: 4.75/5 teasing all the time man
smut: 2.75/5 but i mean he does want her just nakey from seeing her across the street

overall: 4/5 not a lot of bad things to say about this book! i would just say some things said might be a little offense, but it's totally okay to hate the characters who say and do uncalled for things.

Sooo this was such n fast fun read!

I enjoyed this book quite a bit! It was a easy read as the characters where easy to like and fun to read about!

I had a few laughs through out this book and that is something i love in a good romance book! A light funny atmosphere to start a book always hooks me !

Sep!! And Sophia are such a good match !

Seb does get a little alpha male assness 😬 now and then !
But Sophia is a kick as female MC and takea none of his BS !! Yes please !!

This book has two points of few and i live for it!

All the other characters in the book are good and very loveable !

All and all its a good book that i enjoyed a lot!

Thanks Netgalley for the ARC it was a blast to read !

Oh but I absolutely love this book! I’m not usually a fan of the insta-love trope, but man… this was good!
The fact that we have both Sophie’s and Seb’s point of views makes you like them even more - and also, thank god we have Seb’s p.o.v. because I swear sometimes he’s kinda creepy (could be just me tho!) but knowing exactly what he thinks and how he feels does makes us like him and understand him!
Sophie. Damn, I love her! Basically the definition of strong independent woman!!
This was so fun, romantic and heartwarming! And the hurricane scene?? Damn, my heart…

First read-⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐-What? So little ratings? I mean I did pick it on a whim with no synopsis read, but I loved it! Finally a healthy relationship with no actual miscommunication. Everything possible out on the table. Loved it.

Second read-⭐⭐⭐- a year later, new view, and I didn't love it as much as last time. Second time around I come to realize that Seb is overprotective and territorial and I don't like it one bit. Also he could have told her everything if he truly trusted her. And the scene with her brothers was just the cherry on top that made me believe he was truly too overprotective and that would probably become overwhelming with time...so not such a great and healthy relationship.

This book started off well and I finished it in a day, so it was a very quick read, but something in the writing shifted about halfway through that just perplexed me. Things just felt really rushed and a bit too dramatic. I would’ve liked to see things play out with Gary and Gentry a bit slower. I also didn’t like how every chapter overlapped the other. I liked that we got both perspectives of the main characters, but it did feel repetitive at some parts. It was still a fun read, but I hoped for more.

This was such a light, fun, easy read.

I liked the character development, the storyline was good but I feel it had more potential to become something better and a little more dramatic.

All in all, this really was a nice light read to put you into a good mood.

Thanks so much to NetGalley and Holiday House for the digital ARC 😊 #netgalley

A fast read.

Plot wise, it was semi-decent. There were a LOT of characters who could have been written out or they could have at least been more developed.

Steamy rating is a 1/5. Sophie could have grown on me if I had a bit more time with her, but Seb was a bit obnoxious (to be clear, I don’t love the stock character of the Very Large and Over Protective Macho Man Who Has Feelings). Was Ramone just in the book to give Sophie a gay best friend? It felt that way.

The writing is a tad juvenile, and the dialogue is pretty basic. (But, as I’ve said before, I’ve never written/published a book, so what do I know?)

I noticed that the author is a grad of Mizzou’s J School, which is a neat coincidence, considering I’m also a graduate of Mizzou.

(PS, if you’re reading this, Donna Schwartz, there are so many errors in this book. You should really get those corrected.)

Truth or Tequila was definitely somewhere in the middle place for me. Nothing particularly stands out as great content (story, characters, dialogue) however it did make me laugh multiple times and was a fun little read. It wasn’t necessarily bad, but it was just okay. 4 stars because of said laughing out loud

Usually, I am not a fan of insta-love, I absolutely despise it. But Donna Schwartze does an amazing job developing Seb and Sophie's relationship. Seb is a famous baseball player (AHHHH) and Sophie has no idea who he is. On the night they meet, Sophie gets drunk and is dared by her friends to kiss Seb. Seb is instantly attracted to her, but the insta-love is done in a way where he wants to get to know her and it's not love based on solely attraction. He doesn't state he is in love with her right away as I have seen in other books.

Seb is respectful, kind, and very protective. He respected Sophie's boundaries and conditions and even gave her time to fall in love. He wasn't forceful. Sophie is a strong woman who can take care of herself and is one of the best in her field.

There were quite a few things that held me back from rating it 5 stars. There were some scenes that felt rushed. The progression between the characters feels very random. I couldn't understand how they didn't kiss at all then on the same day they did (soberly) they also slept with one another?!?!?! It felt as if the spicy scene was rushed and very unorganized. I also do wish that they explained Truth or Tequila better as I was very confused about how the game worked at first.

I am still very excited to read the next book in the series!

*spoilers ahead*

This was a super cute read and I really enjoyed it! Mostly because I had mixed emotions of Seb the entire time. I was not rooting for him at all, until the very end.

I also hated how rude majority of the men were to Sophie. It made me cringe and it was very uncomfortable to read.

Based on the reviews I was seriously expecting something bad. Like I anticipated a moment the author was going to ruin the book and it never came.
Ig maybe this author just didn’t pay for any good reviews, bc there’s a whole lot of books over 4* on here that are not as good as this one lmao

Anyway, I rated it 3 for a few reasons:

One, the characters didn’t really have any chemistry. The relationship was like nothing. There was so much other random stuff going on in the book the relationship wasn’t even the focus. Which is strange bc this is supposed to be a romance.

Two, there was all this crazy drama and lying to protect that this man was hiding that his mother went to jail for 2 years for some insider trading over 20 years ago. What 😂 he deserved a juicier secret, come on. Who cares if his mother went to jail.

Third, the side characters were not likable. Joe sucked, all the other players sucked, her friends sucked. They were all just EHHHHH.

Anyway, I’m just a chronic 3 star reviewer. So, it’s not something I’d say don’t read. It was fine if you want to add it to your TBR put it ahead of the 200 books I rated a 2 star so far this year.

I was in a huge reading slump and this book has been on my shelf for months so I decided to give it a try. It was such a fast and overall pleasant read. For someone who isn’t a fan of sports romance, I really enjoyed this book.

The FMC is headstrong and confident which I liked. The MMC has alpha male traits but he’s very sweet. This book kind of had insta lust/love. Also little angst to me. I thought the humor was good and there were a lot of cutesy moments between the two.

Some grammar mistakes and there were scene changes that was hard to catch on. It also looks like you have to read the second book in the series to figure out the conclusion to the issue in the book.

Honestly my favorite part was when Seb put Savannah in her place at the end😂 I wanted to tape her mouth shut every time she talked☠️

The writing isn’t excellent, but I gave 4 stars because I was in the mood for something light and easy that I didn’t have to think too hard about. It’s good for surface level, noncommittal reading. If I were in a different mood and was not coming out of some serious things, I probably would’ve only given 3 stars. Take this however you want. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is a quick read, typical insta-love with a semi-decent plot. It just felt a bit over the top , and rushed into the relationship very quick. Would have liked it slowed down just a little, to feel the connection a bit better. I enjoyed the sports romance part, soft and cute but very cliche. The miscommunication trope was the final blow for me for not enjoying this. So many characters, and so many with the letter G?

Although this might not have been for me, it could definitely be for you.

Did someone say Hot Baseball player? Check did someone say Adorable Heroine check, put the two together and its hot. This was my first book by Donna Schwartze and wont be my last i liked this book a lot . Love when romances have a sprinkle of mystery to them. Sophie was a girl who i felt like i connected to a lot with, because she literally is the sassiest little thing, Sophie is dared by her friends at her friends bachelorette party to go up to the Hero who is by the way a hot as heck Baseball Player named Sebastian,, well you can imagine what happens next. you'll have to read and find out.

“God, she makes me hungry—hungrier than I’ve been in years. Just looking at her makes my heart beat faster.”

Strong female lead working in PR meets hunky cinnamon roll pro baseball player? 🥹 Also, a book that starts with slamming some Tequila shots? Ayyyy 😛

I truly adored this romcom. It was the perfect light romance to get me out of a reading slump. I feel like there was a great balance between the heavier parts and the comedy. The author tackled some heavy topics in such a delicate way that I hardly felt like I was reading anything but a fluffy little romcom. Sophie and Seb were super cute, and their insta love romance really had me swooooning.

Read this if you love:
⚾️ Insta love
⚾️ Tequila
⚾️ Strong female lead
⚾️ Sports romance
⚾️ Protective cinnamon roll book bfs
⚾️ Dual pov

I’m confused by all the positive reviews of this book. The writing is cliche, bland, and riddled with typos. The plot is boring and predictable. The MC is not very developed and there is a weird child-like dynamic between the MC and the love interest that is just noticeable enough to be off-putting.

Just cringey and not worth the read!!

Truth or Tequila: A steamy romantic comedy
Written by: Donna Schwartze

Truth or Tequila was a delight to read.

Sophie might not look it but this woman packs a punch! Literally! So when she is dared to go up to baseball player Sebastian Miller by her friends at a bachelorette party (fuelled on Tequila) she is bound and determined to win the dare.

What Sophie doesn’t know is she’s already caught the eye of Sebastian who is watching her walk up the staircase to the VIP Lounge, and right there we get our first look at the relationship potential for these two.

Imagine the surprise to both Sophie and Seb when the next day she finds out that her new client is the baseball club Seb plays for! Surprise, surprise, surprise!

But Sophie’s there for a reason, this club’s reputation is being dragged through the mud due to an incident between a player and a female sports reporter. Now we are ready to see this story take on it’s own life.

There are some very funny moments in Truth or Tequila, I mean all out laugh funny, but there are also poignant moments. The way that Sebastian has decided to deal with fans, he has everything to give to the children who show up to see him and not much patience for the adults, who sometimes can be more than obnoxious. I like that; sports fans don’t take this wrong but on game day or personal time. I personally would not walk up to anyone famous and ask for an autograph.

I also enjoyed the fact that we got to really see Sebastian as a man who may be in love/lust, but feels something for the first time for this woman Sophie and he also is willing to take the time to let her ease herself into any relationship they have. There is a lot to this story, but Author Donna Schwartze has done a great job with the issues that do arise.

Truth or Tequila was so comfortable to read, that when the book was over, I thought darn, this was almost to short…. I happily give it five stars, it gave me a wonderful afternoon of reading, some good laughs and well I might start looking at catchers on a baseball team in a whole new light!

I did like this book. I actually enjoyed reading it, and I'm excited to read the next book. But, I didn't love it. Seb and Sophie's character's just didn't seem genuine. I mean their relationship was not at all convincing when you are reading a romance. I didn't feel the sparks or emotion that I usually do when I read about two character's falling in love with one another. It's not that they fell in love too quickly. I mean my husband and I practically moved in together about two weeks after our first date. There are some spoilers (not huge ones) if you continue reading this review.

So, yeah, there were some things that I just couldn't get past to give this 5 stars. However, I did enjoy this book, and I'm excited to read the next one.
