This is a Middle Grade Historical Fiction Mystery, and this is a Violet Veil Mysteries series. I have to say I really loved the Violet character, and the other characters in this book brings the time period and the story to life. The storyline in this book was so good, and I think it will so bring to light how little power/say women/girls had during the time period this book takes place which is something young girls needs to how and remember how much times as changed. I have to say I also love how true this book shows the time period which police and hangings as well. I normally do not love historical fiction middle grade because they do not show the time period well, but this book did really well. I really loved the mystery in this book. This is kindof a Middle Grade Cozy Historical Fiction book. There is also a little Magical Realism tossed into this book. I have to say this was a very fun read that pulled me into the story. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (HarperCollinsChildren’sBooks) or author (Sophie Cleverly) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

Ich war sofort in das Cover verliebt und hatte richtig Lust, die Geschichte von Violet und Bones zu lesen.
Violet war mir sofort sympathisch, denn sie wollte mehr vom Leben, als sie es zur damaligen Zeit als Mädchen oder Frau erwarten konnte, und wollte sich nicht mit einem Schicksal am Stickrahmen abfinden.
Der Einstieg in die Story war für mich etwas holprig, was vielleicht an einer gewissen Distanz zwischen den Figuren lag, so habe ich es jedenfalls empfunden. Auch wurde auf einiges an ausführlichen Beschreibungen und Erklärungen verzichtet, zum Beispiel vom Haus, den Charakteren oder den Gepflogenheiten der damaligen Zeit, was ich etwas vermisst habe. Der Story selbst tat das aber keinen Abbruch.
Violet, Oliver und Bones auf Spurensuche zu begleiten war tatsächlich sehr fesselnd und manchmal etwas unheimlich.
Leider empfand ich den Fall in seiner Konstruktion und auch in der schlussendlichen Aufklärung aber etwas zu gekünstelt. Auch hier fehlten mir irgendwie ein paar Erklärungen, um das Motiv richtig schlüssig zu machen. Der "Aha-Moment" kam bei mir nicht richtig auf.
Auch die Nebencharaktere sind allesamt blass geblieben. Das hat mich zwar nicht wirklich gestört, ist aber aufgefallen. Das Nachwort der Autorin lässt jedoch auf eine Buchreihe schließen, also lernen wir die Figuren vielleicht noch etwas besser kennen.
Mein Fazit: Violet, Oliver und Bones sind ein super Team und es hat Spaß gemacht, ihr Abenteuer zu lesen. Ich bin schon neugierig, wie es auf dem Seven Gates Friedhof weitergeht🤗

This is a fun middle grade mystery starring Violet Veil. Her father is an undertaker. But when a corpse comes to life and Violet realizes Oliver (the corpse) isn't dead, and her father is jailed, there's a mystery to unfold.
This book would be v enjoyable to middle grade readers. It reads quickly and the suspense keeps you on your toes as Violet, Oliver and Violet's dog, Bones, try to uncover the mystery in their own way. Being children, there's not a lot clues that they can get easily but the trio snoops around, questions supects and solves the mystery. I liked Bones and Violet as a team that reads each other's minds.
There is a mention that Violet Veil can talk to ghosts but it isn't explored much. I wish it had, to add a spookier twist.
Overall, enjoyable.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, the characters were likeable and I thought the story was interesting. My criticisms with this book however, stem from the murder mystery - the culprit was way too obvious. This book is a middle grade so I do understand that it’s not for my age group however I was really craving a plot twist! I also felt like Violet never got the credit she deserved - I get that this story is set in a time where there was no equality among the sexes but even so, I had hoped her parents would give her the credit she was due a little sooner. While I thought this book was pretty mediocre, I would definitely still read the next book in this series, the world building and the main characters (including Bones the dog) were an extremely redeeming feature!

The cover itself is intriguing and gives the reader a spooky vibe, but let me just add that this book is appropriate for children 9-12 years, but adults will enjoy this too. The spooky vibe adds to the mystery and you don't have to worry that your child will lie awake at night after reading this.
The story starts with 13-year-old Violet Victoria Veil who is the daughter of an undertaker. She wants to become her father's apprentice at Edgar D. Veil and Sons Ltd. Undertakers, but both Violet's parents believe that a cemetery isn't a place for a girl, a living one that is. Try as she might, she is always met with a firm no.

One day a mysterious boy is brought to the parlour but soon he disappears. Violet finds him to her shock, wandering in the graveyard, but when she last saw him in the parlour he was dead. But Violet sees her chance to prove herself to her parents, she is going to investigate and prove her father's innocence. The evidence adds up and more fingers are pointing to Violet's father but with the help of the mysterious boy, now known as Oliver, they work together to help her father and help Oliver to uncover the identity of his murderer.
If you're an animal lover, you will love Violet's animal sidekick, a greyhound named Bones. Bones is courageous and has a nose for solving mysteries. He is always at Violet's side and amidst danger, he is ready to pounce. Bones and Violet share a special bond and that's the wonderful thing about having pets, dogs in this case. This story has some interesting surprises and I enjoyed the blossoming friendship between Violet and Oliver. The reader is taken on an investigation alongside Violet, Bones and Oliver, and gets the real investigation vibes with Oliver pretending to be a journalist to find information that only a journalist has access to. You won't believe how the murderer is caught, let's just say if you're the daughter of an undertaker, the dead becomes your friends.

This story teaches us that you can be what you want to be if you are prepared to break the boundaries of others opinions.

Der Schreibstil ist toll: sowohl das Setting als auch die Zeit des 19. Jahrhunderts sind sehr anschaulich und authentisch beschrieben! Die Charaktere sind sympathisch: Violet mit Bones und auch der wieder lebendige Oliver. Das Mysteriöse kommt ebenfalls nicht zu kurz: geheimnisvoll und unheimlich geht es schon daher 😉

Violet kommt als Tochter eines Bestattungsunternehmers täglich mit dem Tod in Berührung. Doch gerade auch durch ihre besondere Gabe, mit Verstorbenen zu kommunizieren, hat sie einen guten Weg gefunden, mit diesem sensiblen Thema umzugehen. In Bones, einem streunenden Windhund, den Violets Familie aufgenommen hat, hat sie einen treuen Begleiter gefunden. Als sie eines Tages den jungen Oliver, der erst tot auf dem Leichentisch ihres Vaters lag, ohne jegliche Erinnerung auf dem Friedhof umherirrend vorfindet, werden ihre Detektivinstinkte geweckt und sie setzt mit Hilfe von Bones alles daran, das Geheimnis um Oliver zu lösen. Als Mädchen im 19. Jahrhundert stehen ihr da nicht alle Türen offen und sie muss lernen, sich durchzusetzen.
So fand ich‘s:
Ein starkes Mädchen, das die Grenzen, die ihr die damalige Zeit auferlegt, zu durchbrechen sucht, eine besondere Gabe und ein mysteriöser Kriminalfall sind Elemente, die in einem Buch zusammen genommen mich schon fast magisch anziehen. 😉 Und meiner Meinung nach ist es der Autorin absolut gelungen, daraus eine fesselnde und kurzweilige Geschichte zu stricken.
Mich hat das Buch jedenfalls bestens unterhalten. Violet hat mich mit ihrer pfiffigen und aufgeweckten Art rasch für sich eingenommen. Auch ihr Vater, der Bestattungsunternehmer Veil, hat das Herz am rechten Fleck und war einer meiner Lieblinge. Die Figuren sind jedenfalls alle charakteristisch und lebendig gezeichnet.
Der Erzählstil ist recht einfach und schnörkellos gehalten, also ideal für die junge Leserschaft. Es herrscht durchweg eine unaufgeregte Spannung, die ab und an ein wenig verhalten rüberkommt. Da sehe ich noch Luft nach oben und bin gespannt, ob sich die Autorin im zweiten Band dahingehend steigern kann.
Violets Reifeprozess in diesem ersten Teil hat mir schon sehr gut gefallen und ich bin gespannt, wie sie sich zukünftig noch weiterentwickelt. Ich glaube, ich muss gar nicht mehr extra erwähnen, dass ich mich auf die Fortsetzung freue.

This is the first book in a new middle grade detective series with a dash of historical fiction. I would say this is one of those cozy mysteries with elements of magical realism. The pacing of the story was great, I never felt like it was too rushed or slow moving. The storyline is unique with lots of twists and turns that keep you turning the pages to see what unfolds. The time period was depicted accurately. It showed how police hangings and women being undervalued was common during the time the book takes place. The characters were done well, you really sympathize with Violet and are rooting for her from the beginning. I loved the value placed on friendship in the book and Bones, Violet's dog, is the best sidekick ever! I love when books have an animal sidekick. I also love the message of the story: that you can become anything you want despite what others think if you work hard enough at it. Overall, this was a great first book to start off the series.
This is a great book for younger readers. Even though it has spooky elements, it is not too scary for bedtime stories or young readers. I also think people of all ages would enjoy this, even adult readers. As an adult reader, I really enjoyed this one and I love the morals a lot of middle grade books tend to teach.

Das Buch ist sehr gut geschrieben. Es ist schon jetzt eines meiner Lieblingsbücher. Ich liebe Krimis mit Jugendlichen, so wie Flavia de Luce und Wells & Wong, nur das dieser hier quasi nur auf dem Friedhof spielt. Ich habe mich sofort "heimelig" gefühlt. Ja, ihr denkt jetzt auf dem Friedhof und heimelig??? Ja, das ist wirklich so. Der Schreibstil und die Geschichte sind einfach wunderbar. Ich fand den Beginn etwas verschreckend, aber den Verlauf dagegen sehr gut. Violet versucht zusammen mit dem Hund "Bones" und ihrer, nun wieder lebenden Leiche, Oliver den gesamten Fall zu lösen.
Warum??? Ihr Vater steht unter Verdacht vier Menschen umgebracht zu haben, es deutet alles daraufhin, dass ihr Vater schuldig ist, aber da Oliver aufgrund seiner Verletzung sich im Moment nicht erinnern kann und auch versucht die Polizei vom gegenteil zu überzeugen, darauf lässt sich der Inspector nicht ein und nun soll Violet´s Vater hängen...
Ich bin so gespannt auf den Folgeband und hoffe nicht mehr so lange warten zu müssen, denn die Zusammenarbeit der Kinder und des Hundes war wunderbar geschrieben...

This book is for its intended age audience. I found it to be a bit slow. IMO, there was never a scary moment. It did remind me of my childhood as I grew up in a very old town. We have an ancient cemetery down by the river. This captured the essence of the cemetery.
Quiet, peaceful, and with a touch of something otherworldly there. Around these cemeteries we have many old homes there. Many reports of ghosts inhabiting them. I once lived in a former rich home and I am pretty sure something was there. My husband has many stories.
These different eras had a different feel to them. I can still remember how slow life seemed to be back then. Slow pace of living. The sounds of the trees. Leaves under your feet. Abandoned homes your mother warned you to stay away from. When I walked into these homes it was very similar to the moment they walked into a burnt shell of a house. We had a lot of abandoned buildings in our town. A former train depot was there. Even though the sun was shining and sweat was dripping down your leg everything changed the moment you set foot inside. Dark. It was so dark inside. Somehow cooler than outside. We used to search for old tools, letters in the mailbox, and any trace of the past. It was good to be a kid then.
The author has captured that and it might be fun for kids who have no experience with the past.

Even though the sun was shining and sweat was dripping down your leg everything changed the moment you set foot inside. Dark. It was so dark inside. Somehow cooler than outside. We used to search for old tools, letters in the mailbox, and any trace of the past. It was good to be a kid then.
The author has captured that and it might be fun for kids who have no experience with the past.

Middlegrade + crime + ghosts.
It was an okay read, I guess. There were times when it felt kinda off, as if something hadn't been mentioned. For example
I've got to admit that I am kinda over female characters in historical fiction railing against their station in life, but I guess a pre-teen will rebell, no matter what.
Despite murders going on, it felt as if actions characters take have no consequences, which is a weird combination.
What I liked is the supernatural element. For some reason, that might be explored later in the series, Violet Victoria Veil is able to communicate with ghosts, but it's more like and empathy link with the deceased than verbal communication.
I don't think I would continue in this series, but then, I am not the target audience.

Another brilliant mystery by Sophie Cleverly! A case of grave danger was exciting , thrilling murder mysteries. The stakes were high making the climax and build up amazing! I enjoyed the character of Violet, feisty and defying. She wants to prove herself more than a girl during the Victorian times. She was bold and daring- everything you would want in a detective! The writing was simple but great. The plot I enjoyed though I wish that it was more a grand reveal at the end rather than Violet and Oliver having a suspicion that they prove. That would have worked better and been more suspenseful. But overall it was a great read. I'd recommend it if you're into cozy mysteries! Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the e-arc.

Violet ist die vorlaute Tochter eines Bestatters, die später gern das Geschäft übernehmen würde. Sie wuchs auf dem Friedhof auf und hat keine Angst vor dem Tod oder den Toten. Ganz im Gegenteil, sie kommuniziert sogar mit ihnen und hat Freundschaften geschlossen. Als eines Tages nicht nur eine Akte, sondern auch ein toter Junge verschwindet, beginnt ein riesengroßes Abenteuer für sie und ihren Hund Bones.
Mir hat die Geschichte gut gefallen, jedoch hat alles sehr lang gedauert. Die Charaktere haben es für mich allerdings ehrlich rausgerissen. Violet ist fantastisch und auch Bones ist großartig. Ihre Familie als Nebenfiguren passen auch sehr gut in diese Zeit, in die wir hier geschleudert werden. Und wieder einmal wird mir bewusst, wie schlimm es damals für die Mädchen und Frauen gewesen sein muss.
Ein tolles Buch, das Mädchen zeigt, dass es sich trotz aller Widrigkeiten immer durchsetzen kann und soll.

Ich hatte echt Mühe, das Buch fertig zu lesen, weil mir Violet so gar nicht sympathisch war. Sie hat eine sehr eigenartige Art an sich. Sie nimmt alles als gegeben hin, hinterfragt so gut wie gar nichts - hat sie sich aber etwas in den Kopf gesetzt, lässt sie keine eigene Meinung gelten und nimmt keine Rücksicht auf ihre Mitmenschen. Ich denke, diese Art hätte etwas sympathischer rübergebracht werden können. Sie ist erst 13 Jahre alt, aber benimmt sich teilweise so, als hätte sie schon 30 Jahre Lebenserfahrung.
Dagegen war Oliver sehr sympathisch, auch wenn er Violet gegenüber der unterwürfig agiert. Trotzdem kam es mir komisch vor, dass er nicht versucht, selbst herauszufinden, wer versucht hat, ihn umzubringen. Er überlässt Violet voll und ganz das Handeln und schleicht hinter ihr her wie ein Hund. Seine Art hat mir jedoch gut gefallen, wenn es darum geht, mal die Initiative zu ergreifen und die Dinge zu übernehmen die Violet nicht machen kann, weil sie als Mädchen eben nicht ernst genommen wird.
Und dann ist da noch Bones, Violets Hund, der mit seiner verspielten Art erst etwas trottelig daherkommt. Kurze Zeit später merkt man jedoch, dass er ein ganz Kluger ist und mit einem unheimlich guten Gespür Violet und Oliver so manchen Hinweis zeigt, der sie ihm Fall weiterbringt.

Zufällig entdeckte ich diesen viktorianischen Krimi für Kinder und da mich Titel, Klappentext und Cover sofort gepackt haben, landete es spontan in meinem Einkaufskorb. Ich bin wirklich froh, dass ich es gekauft habe, denn es ist ein richtig gutes Buch. Violet ist eine wunderbar sympathische Heldin und mit Bones und Oliver bildet sie ein tolles Team. Das Setting auf dem Friedhof ist sehr atmosphärisch, überhaupt finde ich das Thema Tod und den Umgang mit der Endlichkeit hier sehr einfühlsam und doch hoffnungsvoll behandelt. Ebenso werden Geschlechterrollen hinterfragt, Violet begehrt immer wieder gegen die ihr zugedachten Rolle auf und die Frustration, "nur" ein Mädchen zu sein, kommt sehr gut rüber. Aber auch der Kriminalfall ist toll, an den richtigen Stellen gruselig und bis zum Schluss spannend. Ein tolles Buch für junge und jungebliebene Krimifans.

One rainy night, she gets her chance when she meets a boy called Oliver, who was wandering the grave yard. Only, the last time anyone saw Oliver, he was indoors and was very much dead, waiting to be buried.
Violet has found her first case, and it doesn't get better than this.
I thought this book was very interesting and completely different from any book I have read before, in a good way! Even though, I thought that the murderer was a bit to obvious, I don't think that was the point in the book. I think it was more about the journey to get to that conclusion, not the conclusion itself.

Öncelikle şunu söylemeliyim ki, bütün bir sene içinde okuduğum en güzel kitap olduğunu rahatlıkla söyleyebilirim. Eğer daha önceki yorumlarımı okuduysanız veya okuduğum kitapları takip ediyorsanız bilirsiniz ki Sophie Cleverly benim en sevdiğim yazarlardan biri. Kendisinin 6 kitaptan oluşan Scarlet ve Ivy serisini okumuştum ve bayılmıştım. Gizem kitaplarını bu kadar seveceğimi hiç tahmin etmiyordum. Yazarımız bu kitabı 2022’de yazmış olsa da kendisiyle daha yeni tanıştım ve görür görmez aldım. 5 günde bol heyecan ve gerilimle okuyarak bitirdim. On numara beş yıldız ⭐️
Violet, bir cenaze levazımatçısı olan babasının kızıdır. Annesi, babası ve küçük kardeşi Thomas ile birlikte bir mezarlığın ve dükkanlarının yanındaki evde yaşar. A fun fast-paced gothic infused murder mystery filled with plenty of adventure and intrigue.
When a supposed to be dead boy, Oliver, turns out to be very much alive, Violet Veil daughter of a family of undertakers agrees to take on the case of solving who tried to murder the boy. Only problem is the boy was one of a slew of murders (all the others were successful), a slew which her father is framed for. After his arrest Violet and Oliver find they have a limited amount of time to find the real culprit before her fathers trial to hang begins. Along with her trusty side-kick, her greyhound Bones, and the help of a few voices beyond the grave, the kids find themselves on the trail of a mysterious woman they dub "the black widow". Filled with a delightfully macrabre elements, this is a perfect dose of victorian sleuthing with hints of the supernatural, and a wonderfully feminist young female lead.
Highly recommend - will definitely be shortlisting as a perfect fall read for young readers (grades 3-6, most probably grades 4-5). Also enough cross interest to appeal to both boys and girls.

Violet und Bones ist eine schöne Kriminalgeschichte für junge Leser ab 11 Jahre. Ich fand das Buch solide, aber leider nicht herausragend. Mir hat zum einen Charakterisierung gefehlt, besonders bei den Nebenfiguren, die alle sehr blass blieben. Aber ich war mir auch nicht klar darüber, was Violet wirklich für sie empfindet. Besonders bei ihrer Familie (mag sie ihre Mutter? Und ihren Bruder?). Und ich hatte nicht so richtig das Gefühl, dass die Geschichte in der viktorianischen Zeit spielt – dafür fehlten mehr Informationen, Gepflogenheiten oder Sprachstil, die für die Zeit sprechen. Auch da war mir die Geschichte zu blass. Ich habe auch für diese junge Altersgruppe Bücher gelesen, in denen diese Dinge besser dargestellt waren.
Das Buch liest sich allerdings flott und der Kriminalfall ist spannend.

A really fun read starring this awesome & badass heroine, Violet, who must face some problems about her family and her simply for being a girl.
It is spooky too, and sets in autumn so it is perfect for autumn reading. However, it is not as spooky. I think it would be perfect for readers who do not want to be spooked but still want a spooky elements in a book. It won't give you a nightmare, I promise :)

This is an engaging murder mystery. However, I feel the story is held back by the Historical fiction trope of "an independent young woman" in a when it is seen as improper. If one more character told Violet she needed to learn her place, I was going to throw this book at the wall to knock the sense into it.
It also seems like a missed opportunity. Violet comes from a family of undertakes, why not have them be a family of oddities?

MCBA 24-25 Honestly I liked it more than I was expecting. The paranormal element felt unnecessary to me and just a convenient plot devise to make things happen.
