A young warrior must capture a dangerous earth elemental to prove himself. A reluctant hero endures a haunted forest to hunt an undead beast. A group of travellers face a deadly climb for the promise of a wish. A novice recovers from a difficult trial and finds new meaning from her life.
Four fantasy short stories inspired by experiences of mental health. Four characters with their own unique struggles. Four individual worlds to explore.
Stuart Simms is an aspiring Scottish author currently based in Denmark. In October 2021 he released his first book Elementals, a collection of fantasy short stories inspired by his experiences of mental health. He hasn’t won any awards, but there’s still time. Even if awards aren’t forthcoming, he’d claim to be unaffected by it.
Phenomenal collection of short stories whose central theme is mental health experiences.
Four fantasy stories, each one about one of the four elements, the powers associated and how the individuals came to encounter the elemental or tested to become bonded to the element. I loved all four stories for different reasons, but I do believe my top favorite is Water - likely because it was steeped in horror vibes and I love horror as much as I do fantasy.
This author is one to keep an eye on - his writing was poignant and beautiful, it was graceful and had an ebb and flow like a gentle stream, but the creativity of the story and depth to the characters were just absolutely brilliant!
Elementals is an incredible achievement. Each short story left me wanting to learn more about the vivid worlds in which they took place, while the protagonists and their flaws made their journeys relatable and endearing to read. Wholeheartedly recommend others pick this up. I can't wait to see what comes next.
I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. Each story had a unique blend of characters in their own worlds. Each story stands on it's own, but has an elemental theme to it. Some of the stories ended in unexpected ways. I would highly recommend!
