It has been called the age of revolution. The white heat of it came in the decades either side of the year 1800. But it lasted a full from the American Declaration of Independence in 1776 to the great national unifications of Germany and Italy during the 1860s. Right in the middle of this long age of revolution and, as it turns out, the pivotal point within it, comes the Greek Revolution that broke out in the spring of 1821. Historians have been slow to recognise the key role of the Greek uprising in 1821, and the international recognition of Greece as a sovereign, independent state nine years later, in 1830, in this process that did so much to shape the geopolitics of the European continent, and indeed of much of the world. This little book sets out to explain what happened during these nine years to bring about such far-reaching (and surely unanticipated) consequences, and why the full significance of these events is only now coming to be appreciated, two hundred years later.

A book that provides a very short introduction to…what it says in the title really. Officially the page count has 79 pages of text, but the book is in a narrow format and uses a largish font, so it doesn’t take long to read.
The book argues that the Greek Revolution was the first successful example of an European population overthrowing their colonial rulers to form a nation-state, and as such was an event of global significance. The authors argues that the phenomenon of “national revolutions” really began with the United States in 1776-83, and was followed by the slave rebellion in the French colony of Saint-Domingue, which led to the establishment of Haiti as a second new republic within the Americas. Almost immediately afterwards a series of rebellions broke out in South and Central America, that destroyed the Spanish and Portuguese empires on the continental mainland. There was an increasing feeling amongst people across the world that they “should not be ruled by foreigners.”
Greece was not the first part of the Ottoman Empire in Europe to try and break away. The Serbs rebelled in 1804, and in 1817 obtained a substantial degree of self-government. However the external boundaries of the Ottoman Empire did not change. The author argues that the Greeks succeeded because, unlike the Serbs, they received international support.
This support did not come from the monarchs and politicians of Europe, at least not initially. The Great Powers were all, to a degree, multi-ethnic entities, and this was especially true of the Austrian and Russian Empires. None of them wanted to encourage their own ethnic minorities to strive for independence. In contrast however, there was substantial philhellenism amongst the wider European aristocracy, all of whom had been educated in the language and culture of Ancient Greece. The European aristocracy regarded the philosophy, law, literature and arts of Ancient Greece as the very foundation of their own societies. John Stuart Mill famously said that the Battle of Marathon was more important to English history than the Battle of Hastings.
In the end, geopolitical events, especially the Russo-Turkish War of 1829, meant that the cards fell in favour of Greek independence, so that even the Duke of Wellington, British Prime Minister at the time and no friend of revolutionaries, agreed to accept the idea of a Greek nation-state. Since then the nation-state has been a largely dominant principle within Europe.
The conciseness of the book means this is a very basic introduction to the Greek Revolution. That worked well enough for me though, since it was a subject I knew almost nothing about. A worthwhile read if you are in the same position.

Despite classical allusions by contemporaries, the democracy for which Greek revolutionaries fought in 1821 was quite distinct from its earlier iteration. More than that, as the first of the old world liberation revolutions, the Greek Revolution decisively set the stage for the second half of the long age of revolution.
Having been taken out of Greek hands and plopped onto the desks of the three Great Powers, the so-called Eastern Question was decided “not on the battlefield or even in Greece at all, but in a dry conclave of dignitaries held at the British Foreign Office on Whitehall”. Greece was granted her independence not simply as a reconstruction of days gone by but in her own right, as a modern, democratic state. So, as Lord Byron predicted: “Hitherto it has been a subject for the hymns and elegies of fanatics and enthusiasts; but now it will draw the attention of the politician.”

Informative, accurate, concise and a great basic read for the Greek Revolution of 1821 and Independence War. However, for me it's greatest achievement is that it offers a fresh perspective, a new take on a History I already knew in two different ways: first by organising different information, and second by giving another critical opinion on the emergence of the (new) Greek nation state. R. Beaton with a very clear mind, a sharp and bold voice, and strong arguments presents the crucial first nine years of the Greek Revolution and locates Greece and its fight for independence in the global map, in the 'age of revolutions'.

I read this after visiting Greece. Short, but not too short to fit in an argument for its major thesis—viz., that the Greek Revolution was internationally important because it was the first successful ‘domestication’ of the revolutionary ideal in Europe, after the failure of the French Revolution. Disappointing, then, that the author does not actually fit in a sufficiently-developed argument.

A nice overview of the 1821 revolution, but I'm afraid not much else. The author seems to try to make an argument in the final 2 pages of the book, but does not really succeed in doing so; for it would have required a (further) explanation of the revolutions that followed/occurred in other countries.

Interesting short telling of the Greek Revolution of independence and its impact/relevance abroad. The fact that the revolution hinged upon sentiments of foreigners abroad and, ultimately, Great Powers intervention shows that it was an event greater than itself.
