Perfect for fans of Ellie Alexander and Lucy Burdette, Rose Betancourt’s series debut is a culinary treat sure to charm.

Living in Paris, Kentucky, and having a sidekick cat named Pepe le Pew gives Marci Beaucoup’s life a certain je ne sais quoi . Combining her love of baking and France, Marci opened La Belle Patisserie to bring her small Southern hometown a bit of French flair and lots of croissants. Everything is sunshine and macarons at the bakery until her landlord calls to tell her she’s selling the property. Marci’s relieved to hear that if the top bidder, an enchanting Frenchman named Antoine Dubois, gets the property, he’ll renew her bakery’s lease. Charmed by Antoine, Marci figures this development isn’t half bad and sees a handsome new landlord in her future—but then Antoine’s estranged ex-girlfriend Kelly turns up dead in front of her bakery. Sacrebleu!

Everyone calls Marci’s pastries “to die for,” but nobody’s actually died at La Belle Patisserie before. Antoine quickly becomes the main suspect to everyone in Paris—including to womanizing detective Maverick Malone. Who else would have killed Kelly but the ex-boyfriend she was just seen fighting with on the day of her death?

Marci finds out from her landlord that if Antoine is arrested, his purchase of her building will fall through—and her landlord will sell to developers instead, who plan to demolish the building and construct a strip mall in its place. Enamored with Antoine and with her patisserie dreams hanging in the balance, Marci is determined to prove Maverick and the rest of Paris wrong and find the true killer before Antoine winds up in jail—and she has to say au revoir to her bakery.

Now Marci finds herself mixed up in the murder investigation, and she must find the killer before her half-baked theories result in her untimely death.

I read so many cosy mysteries that I suppose the law of averages means every now and then I have to come across one that is not a great read. This is one.

Macarons Can Be Murder was okay but just okay. I was unable to develop any attachment to the characters and then there was that awful set up that I hate of a love triangle. Mind you, the main character was so undecisive about everything it was not surprising she was the same with her men.

This one was not a winner for me and I doubt I will continue with the series.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Unfortunately Macarons Can Be Murder couldn't even get off the ground for me, although I did read to the end. The main character, Marci Beaucoup, loved everything French, and her cafe in Paris, Kentucky, was named La Belle Patisserie. She also had a poodle named Fifi and Pepe Le Pew was her cat. Some way in, a new character was introduced - Angelina Foley! That was an eye-roll moment! But what killed it for me was the ongoing, continual internal dialogue! And the love triangle - this novel should have been labeled romance, not cozy! I'm disappointed I'm not a fan, as the cover drew me in, and it sounded like it'd be good. The author, Rose Betancourt, just couldn't pull it off.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ -NetGalley ARC Audiobook

Description:
“Living in Paris and having a sidekick cat named Pepe le Pew gives Marci Beaucoup’s life a certain je ne sais quoi. Only Marci isn’t in France. She lives in Paris, Kentucky. Combining her love of baking and France, Marci opened La Belle Patisserie, but when a woman is discovered dead in front of her shop, Marci’s dreams come to a screeching halt.
Marci thinks mouthwatering pastries are just what her small Southern hometown needs. Most residents agree, saying that her baked goods are magical, creating love and good fortune all over town. When Kelly Lowry is shot in front of the shop, it gives the pastries a new meaning behind “to die for.” Who killed her, and why was her murder followed by a strange Frenchman’s appearance? When Antoine Dubois wanders into her quaint shop, Marci is smitten immediately. But soon, more questions arise than answers: How did Antoine end up in Kentucky? And what was his connection to the dead woman?
Meanwhile, Detective Maverick Malone is on the case and quickly connects the dots between Kelly and Antoine, accusing him of the murder. Could it be that Antoine had something to do with the dead woman? Marci, enamored by Antoine, is determined to clear his name.
And now that she's mixed up in the murder investigation, Marci has to find the killer before her half-baked theories result in her untimely death.”

I had a few problems with this book. 1.) Why would she risk her life to prove the innocence of someone she literally just met? 2.) Why would she think that her fellow small town neighbors, where she’s lived her whole life, would think she may have committed the crime? Parts of it just didn’t make sense, unfortunately. I am interested in giving the authors other series a try, but I don’t think I would read another one from this series if she continues with it.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscapes Media for the chance to read this for an honest review. All thoughts are my own. :)

Macarons Can Be Murder by Rose Betancourt is the first book in the cozy A Paris Kentucky Bakery Mystery series. As with most cozy mystery books the mystery within this first book is fully solved so it can be read as a standalone if choosing to do so.

Marci Beaucoup has a total love for France and everything French but since she lives in America she has had to settle for the “other” Paris, the one in Kentucky. Marci has decided to combine her love of baking and everything french and open her own little bakery, La Belle Patisserie.

Just as Marci is getting the bakery up off the ground and business begins she finds that her landlord is wanting to sell the building. The new owner, Antoine Dubois, however ensures that Marci will be able to continue her business as usual, that is until Antoine ends up a murder suspect when his ex turns up dead in front of the bakery.

Macarons Can Be Murder by Rose Betancourt was an ok opener to this new cozy series. The story is kind of short one for an opener so I would have liked more suspects and time to get to know the characters and town a bit better before it all wrapped up. I would also warn to those out there that dislike a love triangle that this one seems to be one to include one so that may be a turn off to some but otherwise for me I’d have to see if this one grows on me in the future.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Marci Beaucorp is a pastry baker who owns La Belle Patisserie. She has a poodle named Fifi and a black cat named Pepe Le Pew, and loves all things French. Her Aunt Barb was a military cook and now helps run the bakery. The enticing cover drew me to this book and one can immediately imagine the mouthwatering pastries sold there.

I had high hopes for this series beginner of A Paris Kentucky Bakery Mystery series; however, the protagonist was no naive about real life and continuously made dumb choices making the book a frustration to read. Aunt Barb has a strong personality and bulldozes over everyone. Also, I don’t speak French; therefore, all the French words were lost on me. There are some humorous moments.

The murderer is apparent early on, although the author throws in another character who acts suspicious; otherwise, there aren’t that many suspects. From the beginning, a love triangle appears to be forming. Sadly, this cozy mystery was a struggle to keep reading until the end. I rated it 2.5 Stars rounded up to 3 Stars.

I honestly reviewed an unedited, digital arc provided by NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books. All opinions are my own.

Thanks to #NetGalley for an opportunity to read. I promised myself I would try new authors and series this year and this looked promising if a little cheesy, the whole Paris thing, French pastry and a character named Marci Beaucoup. This just fell so flat for me, it wasn't fun inspite of a cute bakery, adorable pets and a mysterious Frenchman. It had every stereotype I dislike in a cozy, no real police presence, a main character who thinks she is smarter than the whole police force, a main character who in this case, repeatedly, does dumb thing after dumb thing and to finish it off a budding love triangle. No, just not the way to start the New Year!

Dollycas's Thoughts

Marci Beaucoup loves everything French and she combines that with her joy of baking at her La Belle Patisserie in Paris . . . Kentucky. But it is not smooth sailing, her landlord has put the building up for sale. One interested party plans to tear it down and another, a Frenchman, Antoine Dubois, has told her if he gets the property he will renew her lease.

But then Marci finds Antoine's ex-girlfriend dead in front of her bakery, which definitely isn't good for business but it is worse for Antoine because he is Detective Maverick Malone's prime suspect.

Could the handsome Frenchman be guilty? Marci intends to find out but if she's not careful she may have baked her last macaron.

____

I have been looking forward to reading this book since I first heard about it a long time ago. I love the theme and had really high hopes for Marci Beaucoup and her Aunt Barb but this book really was a difficult read and I stuck with it to the last page pulling for it to turn around.

Most of the book is Marci's internal dialogue. Everything she thinks, she rethinks and thinks again and then makes the absolute worst decision. She is just really naive about the world around her and even with all the thinking she does she never has a backup plan. I hate to say she falls into the TSTL category but she continued to put herself in danger and didn't learn anything from her decisions. She also has a real problem with Detective Maverick Malone. They have a history but she thinks she can do his job better than he can. Her Aunt Barb is like a bull in a china shop. She is very overbearing and it is best to just get out of her way. The love triangle that is just getting started really didn't work at all either. There is absolutely no chemistry between these characters.

The mystery was very straightforward and very easy to solve. There really was no suspense. Again the internal dialogue of Marci destroyed any flow that was trying to emerge.

I did like the French pastry theme and the food descriptions did make me crave macarons and croissants. While I don't speak French I didn't mind the terms casually placed throughout the story since they were pretty basic phases but I feel they need to be used sparingly so they don't go against the flow of the story.

Sadly, Macarons Can Be Murder was a book I couldn't escape into. I think Marci needs a sleuthing friend so they can bounce ideas off each other. Someone that can keep her from making horrible decisions. This would cut down on us reading all of Marci's thoughts. All the characters need more development and the mystery needs to be a lot more complicated.

I am rounding my rating up to 3 stars. There are some good ideas here and I think some changes to the writing style and a good editor could save this series.

A story based in Paris- the one that's far away from France, in Kentucky. The cozy mystery starts with our protagonist Meric, who brings all her love for French baking to her bakery - which some say has a magical touch 😉. But when a lady is shot right outside her bakery, the gossipmongers have more than just the food to talk about.

A fast-paced plot in a cozy setting gets you into a very easy breezy mood. I gravitate towards them when I get to overwhelmed with heavy reads or even life! I have a thing for sassy response characters which was infused in Merci, perfectly. A good one-time read if you want to freshen up the mood. Though I don't think the story has a lasting impression once you finish the book, I do recall all those discussions around butter and the fragrance of dough rising in the oven.

Thank you @netgalley @dreamscape_media @authorrosebetancourt for the Audio ARC. It was short, sweet and simple.

This is the first book in a new series and I was excited to read it.
The story was okay, nothing really captured my attention, and the characters didn't intrigue me.
That's not to say it's not a good start, the book just didn't have any wow factor for me.

The best French pastries outside of France might still be in Paris … Kentucky that is. There, Marci Beaucoup serves up everything from freshly baked croissants to macarons with just the hint of crunch at La Belle Patisserie. With mouth-watering food descriptions alone, author Rose Betancourt sold me on this first book in a new cozy mystery series.

However, this is a cozy, so how does the mystery stack up? After the bakery’s landlord plans to sell the property, Marci is relieved to discover Antoine Dubois has made an offer. Handsome, charming, and French, he’d be the perfect buyer to extend the bakery’s lease—well, if his ex-girlfriend’s body hadn’t turned up outside its front door. This setup could easily become overbaked, but Betancourt makes you care enough about the charming little bakery that Marci’s need to clear Antoine’s name and ultimately save the place is compelling.

The investigating leans more over-the-top than grounded, with high stakes confrontations and some overly impulsive sleuthing. However, that never bothers me in this style of cozy. In a book where a macaroon is treated as a dangerous weapon, having Marci charge through an investigation without fully thinking it through is like having a few extra chocolate chips in a cookie: hardly noticeable. It’s pure, murderous fun.

With a solid mystery and a hint of humor, Macarons Can Be Murder serves up the ingredients for a solid start to a new series.

Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Decent start to a new cozy mystery series. I liked the town and bakery setting. However, I didn’t enjoy the main character’s dialogue with herself. She needed someone to share the solving of the crime with besides doing the majority of it in her own head. The love interests seemed way too convenient. I know cozy mysteries can be fluffy, but this one had too much fluff for me and not enough substance. Hopefully the author will build on that for the next book in the series. 2.5 stars.

I realise that a start to every new cozy mystery series always involves the protagonist trying to clear his/her name of murder, hence the foray into amateur sleuthing, but I am not sure why Marci Beaucomp feels the need to clear her (and her bakery's) name in this book when the murder didn't even take place in her bakery!

Marci also seems still miffed with Detective Maverick Malone for failing to take her to their high school prom and with another male character entering her life and business, this makes for a potential love triangle angle.

I listened to the audiobook and liked Nan McNamara's narration. The cover design is also eye catching.

My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Dreamscape Media and the author Rose Bentancourt for the ALC.

First in a series, and last for me to attempt to read.

I tried really hard to get past the ridiculous name. Really, I did. But then the character came off just as annoying as the name and I struggled. Throw in a freakin' love triangle and that's it. Done.

Please, publishers. Can we just stop with the terrible love triangle trope?

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Crooked Lane Books for letting me read this arc. I really wanted to like this book. I love all things French and I live in Kentucky, so i was excited. The MC wasn’t very relatable and I found myself skimming over most of the story. All of the other characters felt so dry and un likable. Things just felt super rushed and there seemed to be an overload of conversations in every chapter but not a lot of descriptions of the people and places. There wasn’t much suspense and the actual storyline just didn’t seem well developed. I couldn’t feel the chemistry between the MC and the 2 men she ended up having feelings for. It just seemed to fall flat for me.

This is not Rose’s normal writing. I really hope if there's a book two she gets her head back in the game. She could really make this series amazing. This one however fell really flat. After around the half way point was when it fell for me. I definitely would be willing to give book 2 a chance cause I love the idea of the whole concept.

I found the main character’s behavior to be wishy-washy. I found myself skimming the text as it wasn’t going anywhere, it was every focused on Antone not being the killer. I didn’t find the killer to be surprising. #MacaronsCanBeMurder #NetGalley

Marci Beaucoup’s is turned upside down when a woman is found dead in front of her little bakery. The woman happens to be no other than an ex-girlfriend of her soon-to-be new landlord. Unfortunately, the cops have zeroed in on her new landlord to be the possible killer, and if he goes to jail then Marci can lose her shop if a different landlord takes over.

This book was a bit chaotic. Being in Marci's head as she investigated the murder was also a bit chaotic. There were some humorous moments with Marci's aunt, who I think I adored the most.

My biggest issue was Marci. I didn't understand her resentment for Maverick Malone who she is also really attracted to but at the same time constantly denies it in her head - also... her gripe with the man is something that happened when they were teens and she makes weird assumptions about him.

There is also a weird love triangle thrown in that just doesn't work for me, since Marci is stringing both of the men along..

It was alright. I'll probably read the next book when it comes out. I think it brings something different to cozies and I'm looking forward to that.

I have read everything Rose Pressey Betancort has written and this is the first time I have been annoyed. Sure, the name “Merci Beaucoup” is really kitschy for a series set in Paris, Kentucky, but that wasn’t even the annoying part. It was the discrepancies int eh story, like she left her dog and cat with her mother to go to the pumpkin festival, then her mother called her from a cruise ship? Add in a few saying that she has used in previous series and I had to stop and ask myself which series I was reading a few times.

That said, this is the first in a new series and it’s often the hardest one to get off the ground. I’ll give the next one a read and hope it breaks away from the ghosts of series past and gets a good proofreading.

For me, this book was just okay. The premise was not particularly creative, and it also got a little boring at times. I had to skim through the book to get to the end. It was not particularly engrossing for me, like other cozy mysteries.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the audiobook copy of this book.

This…was not for me, to put it lightly. I have been in a mystery mood and thought this one looked very cute. I love food references in cozies and thought the cat would play an actual role in helping to solve the murder. But the main character - Marci Beaucoup - I kid you not, was a complete and total dunce for the entirety of the story. Bring in her thoughts was like listening to the most idiotic Reba McIntire impersonator talk about their daily lives. She pointed out the most inane details that had no value to the story or to build character. The mystery was boring and bland and Marci had zero connection to the victim. Her inner monologue about detective Maverick was the absolute worst. She refused to admit her “feelings” but also wouldn’t shut up about how “dreamy” she thought he was. It was a chore to get through this. I gave myself a migraine from rolling my eyes so hard every third line.

I have a few thoughts

first thing, it had a love triangle, i hate those, and it was between a businessman and police detective (at this point we know what i would choose, the detective).
second, the plot was predictable and the characters were bland.
third, i really wished I cloud have rated it higher and like it.

This first book in a new series had a good premise and a good start. I did find the the main character to be imprudent. The book got bogged down by her musings and rash conclusions. There is very little actual investigation happening and yet the murder gets solved; also with very few suspects. It has potential to be a better series with some editing.

This book started off really well, Marci loves everything French which makes sense why she would open up a pâtisserie bakery. Her Aunt Barb helps her run her shop. She's a lovely lady even though she seems to annoy Marci most of the time.

But then as we go along there are some things that start to bug the heck out of me: such as this: we never find out why she's so into everything French, we never truly find out why she won't forgive Maverick for something that clearly happened eons ago but she won't let it go, she states that Maverick is always dating someone new yet there seems to be no actual proof of that.

Then there seems to be a whole entire change in her countenance as well. One minute she's shy and demure, the next minute she's pushy and overly self-assured. So, the question begs asking, which one is she really?

Then there is also a lot of the dumb things she starts doing that are completely reckless, such as *spoiler alert* her running off into places and not telling anyone, her running off during the fall festival with a killer on the loose and doesn't bother to take her phone? Then this one is the one that really made me start to dislike her and the book: she gets out of a trunk of the car after being kidnapped, ends up running to her friend Kristina's dress shop and ends up buying a dress? A killer is literally looking for you and you're shopping? Smack me in the head that's dumb. And on top of all of this, she starts getting notes, getting followed by some cretin and doesn't bother telling the police? Why? How is the police supposed to even have a chance at cracking this or any other case if you keep ALL of the clues you have found to yourself?

Now, I have no problem with cozies that have the MC help the police or have to figure things out themselves because they are the main suspect, but she was neither. She ended up making the police department look bad. And as if that wasn't bad enough then she ends up dating the main suspect and the detective? Jiminy Christmas, this woman cannot make a decision to save her own life.

She's a jumble of nerves, ego, mangled conclusions, lies, and lucky breaks. And don't even get me started on all of the mistakes just dealing with the murder weapon....my husband is a Gunsmith, so I am fully learned on gun lingo. First off, if you're going to mention a gun then actually be specific on the type. And then there is a difference between shot gun shells and bullet casings. There are no shell casings. Shells are for shot guns and bullets are for pistols and rifles.

Then you're going to go into a gun shop with a receipt and then ask the proprietor about who he sold the gun to? Not going to happen. Legally, he cannot do that without getting himself into trouble with the law, plus if you have the receipt then it would already have the person's name on it because of the fact that they have to call in and check his record to see if the person is legally able to purchase a gun. If there is a receipt, then the sale went through which means that it would legally have that person's name on it.

I really hate to sound harsh because I love authors and I love to read. I just feel like that this book needed more research done. And yes, I am sure most people are going to say, 'but this is just a cozy, what difference does it make.' Well, without the correct facts, etc. then the story itself falls apart.

I believe the author gave a good effort but since it did not resonate with me then no, I cannot recommend this book.

Thank you to Net Galley, the publishers, and to Rose Betancourt for the ability to read and review this book. All opinions are mine and mine alone and are completely honest.

Marci Beaucoup loves everything about France. She even lives in a town named Paris, although it’s in Kentucky and not the country of France. She has a cat named Pepe le Pew. Now, she’s opened her own French style bakery called La Belle Patisserie. Life is good, but then she finds out her landlord is selling the building that houses her bakery. There are two potential buyers - one wants to tear the building down and the other, Antoine Dubois, wants to keep everything the same including the bakery.

However, things take a nasty turn when Antoine has an argument with his ex-girlfriend and she ends up dead in front of the bakery. Antoine becomes the prime suspect in her murder. If he’s found guilty and sent to prison, he can’t buy the building and it will go to the other buyer. Marci is afraid of losing her business and sets out to investigate. She’s sure Antoine didn’t do it. After all, he’s handsome and he asked her out. The local detective on the case, Maverick Malone, is sure the man is guilty. Marci is convinced he’s looking no further than Antoine. It should be noted that Marci has personal problems with Maverick from years ago. She's convinced he's a womanizer. This just makes her more determined than ever to find the real killer.

This book is the first in a brand-new cozy mystery series. It had so much potential. I admit, the cover drew me right in. I wanted to like this one so much. Unfortunately, it took me a long time to get into the story. It just didn’t click for me.

Marci is an interesting character, but she also seems too naive to me. She jumps to too many conclusions without any real proof. Plus, there are pages and pages of her internal thoughts. It’s as if she’s brainstorming with herself. She really needs a confidant. Marci’s insistence of doing things on her own is too reckless to me. Although, that’s standard with cozy mysteries - the amateur sleuth takes too many risks. For me, it didn’t work in this one.

Although this book didn’t work for me, I still think the idea of a French bakery in Paris, Kentucky could be a great setting for a cozy mystery. I, also, feel if Marci had a close friend helping her with the sleuthing, it would make the world of difference. It gets to be too much just reading her thoughts to herself through most of the book. Sometimes it felt like she was arguing both sides of a situation with herself.

I’d still be willing to give a second book a chance. There are so many possibilities with this storyline, I'd want to give it another try. Perhaps my next visit to Paris, Kentucky will be better.

When I first picked up this book, I was immediately drawn in by the charming cover and intriguing title. And at first, the premise seemed promising – a murder mystery set in a pastry shop? Count me in! However, as I delved deeper into the story, I found myself wrestling with mixed emotions.

The main character (MC) had the potential to be a compelling and relatable protagonist. Her passion for all things French and running her shop was evident, and the setting had a lot of promise. However, I must admit that her constant inner monologue debating every little decision started to wear me down. While introspection can add depth to a character, there was just too much of it, causing the pace to slow and making the narrative feel somewhat stagnant.

Now, let's talk about the love triangle. I'm usually all for a little romantic tension in a mystery novel, but the way it was executed here left much to be desired. The MC's conflicted feelings between the detective and the French stranger felt forced and lacked the spark needed to make the storyline engaging. Moreover, the detective standing her up and her subsequent anger towards him seemed like a contrived way to add drama rather than a natural progression of their relationship. Note I do kind of like their back story, I just felt like it was introduced at the wrong time, or jumped around so that it didn’t feel natural.

Another issue I had was with the sudden shift in the shop's popularity. One moment, the place is bustling and hip, and the next, it's struggling to survive after a murder occurs nearby. Understandable of course, a murder happened but I think this feeling had to do with how Marci reacted to the initial lull making it her reason for solving the crime. The lack of a dramatic discovery of the body also fell flat, missing an opportunity to inject some real excitement into the story.

While "Macarons can be Murder" had an appealing concept, the execution left much to be desired. I was left longing for a more dynamic and gripping narrative, with less internal monologuing and more focus on building authentic relationships between the characters. The potential for a cozy mystery set in Paris, Kentucky at a French Pastry Shop is undeniable, but unfortunately, this book and audiobook didn't quite hit the sweet spot for me. Nevertheless, if you're a die-hard fan of both cozy mysteries and macarons, it might still be worth a read, just be prepared for some lulls along the way.

Macarons Can Be Murder earns 4/5 Macarons … Delicious Fun!

Antoine Dubois is handsome, debonair, and French — all the things Marci Beaucoup finds fascinating. He is also new to Paris, (Kentucky, that is), and pleased to see a tasty piece of home in the form of Marci’s French bakery, La Belle Patisserie. Her little tête-à-tête is interrupted by a woman barging into the shop with angry words for Antoine which, after they leave, continues outside. Kellie Lowry is the “not ready to be an ex” girlfriend. The incident quickly becomes fodder for the town’s gossipers, but more unfortunate, it’s also preliminary evidence implicating Antoine in Kellie’s death.

Rose Betancourt’s new series, Paris Kentucky Bakery Mystery, grabbed my interest since Marci and I have one thing in common; we both love anything and everything French! She didn’t fall into that “first book in a series” trap by spending too much time introducing characters and background details, instead the crime occur early (my favorite) and focused on the investigation. Of course, the initial thought is it’s a crime of passion, but first impressions are deceiving. Marci’s landlord is selling the property in which she has her bakery which adds to the drama, especially since the prospective buyer, Monsieur Dubois, could be a murderer. Our amateur snoop shows her inexperience with a stereotypical perspective, contaminating a crime scene, saying too much to the wrong people, and generally showing a greater naïveté than other Betancourt female leads. She evolves, however slowly, to uncover a sinister scheme, wiggle out of trouble, and assist in an arrest.

I loved the southernisms and idioms sprinkled throughout the story to illustrate an emotion, a personality, a characteristic; lately I have experience with it being “hotter than the devil’s underwear.” And recipes! You can’t have a cozy set in a French patisserie, even if it is in the south, and not have French pastries, and Rose didn’t disappoint with four favorites: Financiers, a sweet almond cake, Palmiers, a flakier croissant, Apple Cranberry Galette, a French version of apple pie, and Crepes! But, where’s the macarons?

Marci Beaucoup lives in Paris and runs a bakery, that's Paris, Kentucky, where she has gained a reputation for baking sweet treats which provide good fortune for all who try them. When a handsome French newcomer to town hints he may be buying the building where La Belle Patisserie is situated, Marci doesn't know what to think. Soon though she’s wishing that was her only problem after discovering a dead body on the sidewalk outside her front window.

Detective Maverick Malone, who Marci has known for years, is soon on the case and her Aunt Barb is dropping hints into most conversations as to why they should be dating! Determined to ignore her aunt's suggestions, get to the bottom of what happened, and why her shop was targeted, Marci soon finds herself knee deep in trouble with no real idea how to save herself.

As the first book in a new series this has a lot going for it. Unfortunately it also has some things which didn't work for me. A potential love triangle and some protagonists who were difficult to relate to, (this doesn't include Marci, who I did like), made the going a bit of a struggle at times but overall I will see what happens in the second outing before discarding it.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I'm glad I gave this a chance.

This first-in-series has the potential to become a cute and fun series beginning with its setting in Paris - Kentucky, that is, not France - and a French bakery run by proprietress Marci Beaucoup. Obviously, someone in her family had a wicked sense of humor, but faithful to her name, Marci loves all things French. The characters are likeable and just quirky enough to be interesting; and the mystery was reasonably puzzling. The problem arises with Marci's incessant monologues, questioning and second guessing her every step, jumping to conclusions, and acting like a middle-schooler around handsome men. I found myself barely skimming through pages of this nattering to get to something of substance. Adding insult to injury, are the ongoing TSTL moments and several plot holes. I truly believe that a good editor should have caught most, if not all, of these issues, or at least mitigated them. Nonetheless, I will give this series another try and hope for better editing.
