“I’ve been scrambling to save Mayuri. It’s meant sacrificing so much with Suzuka, Faris, Lukako and Moeka.” — Okabe

Fun, hilarious, endearing and at times quite moving, Steins;Gate is proof that Manga, at it’s absolute best, can elevate itself into a realm which transcends its general perception by readers at large. Were Steins;Gate to be a clue on Jeopardy, we might have once heard Alex Trebek say:

“I’m hip, funny, poignant and thrilling, all while explaining a conspiracy by an evil organization to reshape the world through time travel — among other things.”

The correct answer of course is, “What is Steins;Gate?”

If you watched the anime you will not be disappointed in The Complete Manga from Yomi Sarachi, in collaboration with Saitoh Sakae. It’s just as fabulous as the show in its page turning complexity and endearing cast of characters. The story, over 500 pages in the complete version from start to finish is riveting fun. The illustrations are marvelous, augmenting the sprawling yet somehow intimate story. In tandem the story and illustrations capture the wonderful characters and the unique, smart vibe of Steins;Gate. Steins;Gate is so self-aware that some of the things within seem not so out there as they once were. In fact…

It’s all here:

Braun tubes, “B” World Lines, Sern, the Phone-Wave (name subject to change), D-Mail, the Labmen, and the intricately plotted story that at its heart had Okabe, a socially lonely, quirky young man who fancies himself a mad scientist.

The relationships grow deeper and more fraught with irreversible peril in Okabe’s quest to right a wrong, and correct an error which has resulted in the death of someone he holds dear — his “hostage”. Yet every time the jumps, trying to undo the D-mails, his effort ends in heartbreak. Finally Okabe discovers that the girl he has come to love in a different way must be allowed to die if he is to save the other.

It seems an impossible paradox, even with help from a time traveler named…well, if I go there, endless explaining will be required, because Stens;Gate is like pulling a thread, and finding it’s attached to a huge spool of them. And oh yeah, each thread is a timeline.

“She (Mayuri) somehow remembers things. Memories of the other worlds…Seems like they always remain in people’s hearts.”

A chance meeting leads to one of the wildest, and one of the coolest mangas ever. So much of manga is dreadful now, that Steins;Gate seems like it might itself have been sent to us by John Titor, from 2036.

You thought television’s Fringe was cool and complex? You haven’t tackled Steins;Gate! Just a blast, but a smart blast. If you’ve watched the anime series, you’ll love the manga version. But if you haven’t, you’ll love it too. Either way, it’s wonderful, and I couldn’t more highly recommend it. Fabulous stuff.

I think I like the anime more since it has time to develop the characters’ relationships, but still a fun read

This took a while for me to get through. The first half was very boring, slow paced, and the characters were not very interesting. I had to start watching the anime to see if I wanted to continue. I think the first handful of episodes really fixed the pacing and boring characters for me. Then I went back and finished the manga and enjoyed how the rest played out. Now I can go back and finish the anime.

Rintaro Okabe pissed me offfffff—stupid men and being mad scientists. Kurisu Makise was a bad ass.

Didn't cry at:
- "Maybe there are copies of me on countless world lines. Maybe all their minds are connected, forming a single “me.” That sounds wonderful, don’t you think? Being in all times and in all places."
- “A strong love for someone… a strong belief in something… a strong desire to convey something… If all those things go beyond time to create “you”, then that would be magnificent. So don’t think of it as letting me die. Even if the world line changes, as long as you don’t forget me, I’ll always be there… I’m sure that from now on you’re going to suffer. You’ll be in a world where no one but you remembers me. You care more about your friends than anything else, so I think it’s going to be painful for you. I’m so sorry. But that pain will mean a lot to me.”

Favourite quotes:
- I didn’t care if it was a joke or not. I was just happy that somebody knew… that I was alive… that it was OK for me to live.
- Even if the whole world turned against you, I would continue to be your only ally
- People… need to be needed by someone in order to live.
- If nobody was going to notice or care if I died then… what’s the point in living?
- Remembering something that no one else can is a painful thing. You can’t talk to anyone about it. No one will understand you. You’ll be alone.
- Keep the past, for all intents and purposes, where it is.
- Living should mean no do-overs. This is for the best.
- Theories are nothing more than words. Accept what you’ve seen.
- I’ve only lived 18 years, but I don’t want to change any of them. They’re all part of my life, even the failures.

Okabe aka "Kyoma the Mad Scientist," attends a press conference on time travel that changes his entire life. Together with his lab assistants, or LabMem, they create a time machine with a cell phone and a microwave, and he can send text messages back in time that can affect the current world line they’re on. Okabe can feel the changes to the world, a type of energy he calls Steiner, but not all of the changes end up positively impacting the lives of those involved or around them. A seemingly innocent change to make one of the LabMem closer to their true self spirals into the death of another, and Okabe scrambles to put everything back to normal. But, another traveler from the future tells him he has one more major change to make, one that can stop World War III from killing billions of people.

Wow, what a fun manga. It starts off pretty weird, and it's hard to get a grasp on what's going on (I think this is a problem of not establishing enough context), but once you get an idea of what is going on, it's all awesome. There are some plotholes, but that's okay. No plot is perfect.

This anime is one of my all time favorites. It gets the science right. It develops the characters. You get the voices and inflection and context that you just don't get on a page with art and text. This is a rare instance of - watch the anime first. The book tells the same story, but it's been years since I last watched it and I loved returning to them here. It's not as nuanced as the anime and I honestly think it would be confusing or downright boring at the start if you have no idea what is happening when you go in, especially with the bananas and D-mail. At the very least, you'd benefit from watching the beginning. But, since I've seen it and knew what to expect, I did really enjoy returning to these characters and this story in a different form. It's well-paced. It seems like it starts slow and then races to the end, but when the events are considered, it's all measured and paced out. It's just everything amplifies and the tension rachets and it's unrelenting until the end. For years after I saw the anime, I wanted to talk to someone about it, but no one around me is into anime. :( Now I want to talk about the book and have the same problem. LOL

The idea of time traveling is cool and explained oddly well... even though we make ~gelnanas~. It is bunch of oddballs but that doesn't really matter, only makes the story more believable. The only thing is sort of discouraging is the pacing. I read it as the complete manga but it is divided in three volumes. The pacing in the first two is relatively slow in comparison to the last one, all the plotlines really build up to that point. This is totally fine but can feel a little slumpy and like u made no progress with reading, since the whole series consists of three volumes.

Honestly just found the series kinda boring. I didn’t really care for the main character and the “invention” of their Time Machine, is just a bit too “quirky”. I had heard about the anime years ago, and was interested but never got around to it, picked up the manga expecting to enjoy but it really didn’t work for me.

TW: Transphobia, non-consensual groping

This book is transphobic af and uncompelling. The characters relationships are not believable. The "plot twist" is trash, and the story is wrapped up half-assedly. It truly was so grueling to read.

Content Warnings: murder, accidental death, misgendering of / groping of a trans character, gender dysphoria.

I had no idea what this was about going into it - other than being warned that it was an emotional ride - as I hadn't ever watched or read any of it previously. And I think going into it blind was a really good thing, honestly. Sure, it had me a bit confused in the beginning (between all the characters we meet very quickly, plus the... time anomaly chaos), but it wasn't long until things started clicking into place, and just... this is one of those things that I already wish I could erase from my memory so that I could read it again for the first time, not knowing the twists, not knowing what will happen.

I never really write long reviews for manga, and that is especially the case for something like this with so many twists and reveals and emotional moments that I would hate to give away, but man, this was very worth picking up. I sped through this entire thing in a couple of hours, because I couldn't put it down.

(Also, not sure what's "exclusive" about this Barnes & Noble edition - though it did have a little fold-out poster in it, so maybe that? - but this is a really, really nice hardcover bind-up. Do recommend, if you like the series and want a nice physical copy!)

This book, feels rushed... There I said it. Now for some context I am a huge Steins;Gate fan, I played all the VNs and have been an avid fan since I first watched it. That being said, this manga as an adaptaion of Steins;Gate, is way too fast paced only being around 500 pages in length. Now that might sound like a lot for a traditional book, but this is a manga, which means every page is essentially an illustration with text. It left out many details including crucial ones to the plot. To the mangaka's credit, they worked around less details well enough to be a coherent enjoyable story (and btw the artstyle is beautiful). Though as a Steins;Gate fan, I felt it was a little disappointing compared to the game and even the show.

I loved reading this. I had never followed anything with this series before until I picked up this copy at B&N. I inhaled it in a night. I needed to know what happened. I’m so so stoked to pick up the reimagined ending series. I liked how this ended but I’m very curious to see what could have happened instead.
Also I wanna be a Labmem

the beginning starts out super confusing but the more u read the more u learn about how interconnected it all is. and then once you're done, you'll wanna reread it and once you do, you will notice things in the beginning that connect to the end in ways you never would've thought of. a really good book and I love this story and I wanna read it again.

Beautiful story, but this format might have been a bit too fast-paced to appreciate the emotional journey the characters go through. I recommend you either watch the anime or play the game (which is the original source) to better experience the story for the first time.

Time travel. Consequences. Curiosity. Critical thinking. The greater good. All here. It’s not just about time travel—it’s about responsibility. About living with regret. About how sometimes, no matter how smart you are, you can’t save everyone. But you try anyway.

3.5 stars. The first half was slow but the second was AMAZING! There are some outdated things (like how trans people are viewed etc) so be warned. Still would recommend for a fun read
