He Will Be Enough: How God Takes You by the Hand Through Your Hardest Days

Rate this book
Biblical reflections helping you to have faith and to trust God in hard times. Life doesn’t always go the way we hoped, and sometimes God doesn’t answer our prayers the way we’d like. Challenging circumstances, especially ones with no immediate end in sight, can cause us to question God’s character, his purpose and his ways. Each of these 20 biblical reflections examines a truth about God and shows how it provides an anchor for the soul in hard times. Author Katie Faris writes with warmth and compassion, weaving in stories of her own family’s struggles with complex medical conditions. She encourages readers to entrust their confusing circumstances and unanswered questions to the Lord and place their hope in his promises. In so doing, they will be sustained in their suffering and enabled to live joyfully and fruitfully, loving and serving God and others, in the midst of their struggles. This beautiful hardback book will help you if you are going through hard times, or walking alongside those who are. It is also a great gift for a brother or sister in Christ who is struggling.

A wonderful and encouraging book with Scripture throughout. The book encourages you in the midst of hard stuff to keep your heart fixed on the Lord. That even in the rawness of difficulty, God is right there with you and will lead you. This is my very favorite quote from the book: "As a Christian, I aim to live by faith right now, in the present, in the most middle-part of my story. I don't want to get to the end and realize I missed it; that I was too busy borrowing tomorrow's trouble that I missed enjoying the Lord and my family and doing the work God entrusted to me today."

This excellent book delves into deep truths, within short chapters that a suffering person can manage. Katie effortlessly weaves personal narrative and truths about God to keep the reader engaged. The recounting of personal narrative is not exhaustive or self exalting, but rather is well used to make a point about God’s presence in suffering. The discussion questions after each chapter help the reader to further apply each area personally. Definitely recommend!

Where can we find help when life gets hard? In He Will Be Enough, Katie Faris helps us see how God takes you by the hand through your hardest days.

The School of Suffering

In just over 200 pages, this devotional-style book is a blessing in the school of suffering. After a brief foreword by Joni Eareckson Tada, Faris speaks of her own suffering. She shares specifically of how her children were diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency -- an inherited disorder that causes lung and liver disease.

Faris uses 20 chapters to show the character of God and how it changes our story in suffering. We learn that God is gracious and compassionate, and that he is trustworthy and has a plan. In the darkness of suffering, these are big truths that shine brighter. Church and corporate singing have a strong role to play in strengthening the hearts of sufferers.

Honesty and Vulnerability

What I most appreciated was the open honesty throughout the book. Faris is vulnerable, but she is not looking for pity. Instead, she points us to Christ. She helps us see that everyone carries their own sorrows. But this does not mean we have to bear them alone. Along with Christ, we have his church. Faris even shares how God brought her friends when she needed them most.

Each chapter ends with reflection questions to help you look deeper into your own heart. And when you don’t have the words, Faris offers short prayers to help bring your heart before God. Throughout the book, Faris gives Scriptural support to her points and helps explain the text -- ensuring it gives proper strength to those who are suffering.

Walking with the Shepherd

I was most interested to see how relatable Faris is in her writing. She shares that when suffering comes, our “good works” and service might not be what you thought it would be or look the way you thought it would look. She says that suffering with God’s name on our lips might be the good service God is calling us to do!

When I finished this book, I was left with a sense of hope. If the hard days are not already here, they will eventually come. But Christ will be enough. God will be our refuge and strength. The valley of the shadow of death will be a shared walk with the Shepherd. And he will see us through.

I received a media copy of He Will Be Enough and this is my honest review.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1b

First, you know it’s going to be a good book when the forward is written by Joni Eareckson Tada.

So many verses could be chosen as the “theme” of this book, but I would contend that Isaiah 43:1b fits best. He Will Be Enough is a gospel packed book that points you to Jesus over and over in the midst of your trials and suffering.

Katie Faris gently reminds you of God’s faithfulness through stories of her life and challenges us to remember that is we are Christ’s we have noting to fear. I was greatly blessed and encouraged by this little book and highly recommend it to anyone who is going through a hard season. God is enough and if you are His through Christ Jesus, He will never let you go.

When I look at my circumstances, sometimes it’s overwhelming and seems impossible and I dissolve into tears. When I remember that for this I have Jesus, I can hold onto him, his promises and his hope through my tears. I am grateful that Katie has shared her story and points readers to Jesus.

“He will be enough contains 20 biblically rich reflections on the character and promises of God to anchor your soul through hard seasons.”

Each chapter can be read independently. They are not so long as to be overwhelming. You can pick up the book and read just one chapter at a time and find encouragement for that day for that moment.

I have already given away one copy and expect I will be giving away more. You might want to go ahead and order two copies so you’re prepared. :)

In this devotional collection, Katie Faris shares meaningful reflections on persevering through suffering. There are twenty different readings, and each one is approximately eight pages long. Faris begins with a story or example from her own life, and then she connects her experiences to a Bible verse about suffering. Each reading ends with a short prayer and some journaling prompts. Throughout the book, she emphasizes God's faithfulness and character, showing how He is compassionate, trustworthy, and at work in the midst of our pain.

However, even though Faris grounds this book in theological truth, her reflections never become abstract or academic. She conveys these truths from within her own life's context, showing how she has personally experienced God's character while navigating the health issues that some of her children have due to a rare genetic disorder. Many elements of this book are very personal, focusing on her family's struggles, and other parts are more general, sharing different examples of what readers might be dealing with. The memoir elements will especially resonate with other parents of children with genetic disorders or other severe health problems, but the book's overall messages apply to all readers, regardless of their circumstances.

He Will Be Enough is a compassionate, encouraging resource for suffering Christians. Katie Faris's vulnerability about her struggles, deep faith in God, and ability to articulate meaningful truths from Scripture can be a great blessing to different readers, and this devotional can help them fix their eyes on God and trust Him in the midst of their pain. This is a platitude-free devotional from someone else in the trenches, and I would especially recommend it to other mothers of children with health issues.

He Will Be Enough is the debut title by pastor’s wife and author Katie Faris. In this book, Faris reminds readers that even when their circumstances change, God’s character does not. Faris begins the book with a look into the suffering her family endured as they learned that her children had a rare medical condition known as Alpha-1 She details for readers how God was faithful to her family even on their worst days. As I read about how Katie trusted God, my heart was pointed to the goodness of Jesus and I was very encouraged.

An example of this can be found on page 62 where Faris wrote, “Friends, Jesus is sympathetic with us in our weaknesses, especially when those weaknesses are related to temptation and sin. Think about it. There’s no doubt or lie that he hasn’t heard. There’s no struggle that surprises him. There’s no hardship outside of his scope. And there’s no need to run except to him; no need to hide except in him. Oh, what a Savior! His sympathy calls for a response, and Hebrews 4:16 tells us what this appropriate response is: ‘Draw near.'”

He Will Be Enough contains 20 brief chapters so it can be read as a chapter book or even as a devotional. Each chapter concludes with questions that point readers to the Bible and one additional benefit of the questions is that it makes the book an option for reading in a group setting.

In one chapter of the book, Faris shared about a miscarriage she had and I cried when I read that part. As I’m still processing through and healing from mine, I found comfort in Faris’ words.

This was one of the most encouraging books I’ve read in a while and I’m very thankful for Katie ministering to me through it. I’m very much anticipating her forthcoming book, God Is Still Good, in January.

I received He Will Be Enough compliments of The Good Book Company in exchange for my honest review.

From the introduction: "The question I was faced with on that day, and on many days since, was this: Will Jesus be enough, even now? Even when I don't understand? Even when the future I mapped out has been upended? Even ... In the years since that day, I've discovered that the answer to those questions is Yes, Jesus is enough."

We are living in hard days, and this book is an excellent tool for whatever hard situation you are facing, it will draw you in, you will relate to the anecdotes of the author's life, and others that she knows, and it is a huge blessing, as each of the 20 readings points you to a new way that God is present in all of life, and especially the angles of hard.

Each of the chapters focus on who God is in a different relatable aspect. The author shares truth from the Word of God, examples in life, a sample prayer, and ends each reflection with questions to answer, and a scripture to read and consider this aspect of who God is to YOU!

This book is directed to believers, who use the Bible, as a lens of how to see God in all of life, and as our life. If that perspective, isn't one you can embrace or be challenged with this book isn't for you. But for anyone willing to recognize that God is present even today and who needs reminders in those 'soul amnesia' moments we all have, it is for you. Thankful to partner with the Goodbook company and read an early release. It's a book worth owning and sharing with others.

In short, easy-to-meditate-on chapters, Katie Faris reminds those who are experiencing overwhelming hardship that there is a faithful, loving God who cares for us deeply and is intimately involved in our trials. She does so with honesty and authenticity as she shares her own family's incredibly difficult story. The book is both deeply theological and intensely practical. She will remind you of the truth of who God is, which may be difficult to see through the lens of pain, doubt, and fear. She will encourage your heart to stay strong by keeping your eyes on Jesus through life's storms.

I read this book a couple of years ago and picked up this book again at the beginning of the year. I found it extremely helpful when going through difficult times. I remember that at the beginning I thought this would be good to read to help other people dealing with difficulties particularly those struggling with neurodiverse children but it is a book for us all, struggling but trusting. It is a book about faith and an utterly amazing God! I am buying it for a friend. and I am glad I read again.

A moving compilation of readings addressed to those overwhelmed by trials and anxieties. Drawn from the writer's own experience of dealing with her children's multiple serious illnesses it concludes that, not matter the seriousness of the situation "He - ie God - will be enough".

So much amazing truth packed into one book and 20 powerful lessons - loved this book. It’s so refreshing to read from someone who really “gets” it. There are no unhelpful tropes or cliche answers to deep issues but rather a loving guide through scripture acknowledging the very real hard stuff but our very real hope and certain future in Christ. A tone and wisdom only gained by walking through fire - I felt God’s love a lot through this book.

I was blessed to receive this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I highly recommend this book to absolutely everyone. In fact, I'm sure I will read it again and again. Katie does an excellent job of breaking down and explaining very powerful truths that God has longed for us to understand, without adding a lot of fluff or watering it down. It will keep your attention and challenge your relationship with the Lord. Very well done!
