Her official writing career began in 1999 with the acclaimed Scottish historicals, Kilgannon and The Wild Rose of Kilgannon, the epic love story of an English woman who falls in love with a rugged Highlander. The series left her readers thirsting for more stories of the glittering streets of London and the misty Scottish Highlands.
In 2002, Givens launched her Torridon series. The Legend introduced the MacCurrie brothers, identical twins, whose birth and lives have been predicted by the Brahan Seer. The Legend tells the story of James MacCurrie and Ellen Graham, cousin to Bonnie Dundee, and is set in the late 17th century, when William of Orange has usurped King James, and rebellion is in the air.
The Destiny continued the adventures of the brothers who are fated to help determine the future of the thrones of England and Scotland, and tells the story of Eileen Ronley, granddaughter of Charles II. The Destiny won the coveted Romance Writers of America's RITA Award for Best Long Historical of 2003.
Her latest book, On a Highland Shore, which was published in July, 2006, launched a new series that will follow three siblings and their descendants for 500 years. Set in turbulent 13th century Scotland, it tells the story of Margaret MacDonald, the oldest of the siblings the series will follow, and Gannon MacMagnus, the founder of the MacGannon clan we met in the Kilgannon saga. It has Vikings, invasions, and a war. What better backdrop for a love story?

A Wonderful, Exciting Story of Clan Kilgannon, a keeper!
I love how Givens writes. I just get lost in her tales and her characters. I have two tests for a 5 star romance: (1) can I put it down? and (2) will I read it again? This book passes both tests. For those considering buying it, make sure you also buy Kilgannon first. The two books form two parts to the same story--and you will want both.
This novel tells of Mary Lowell, an English aristocrat, and the Highland chief Alex MacGannon, who claims her as his bride. I loved Mary...what a heroine! She is independent and smart and does what she thinks is right no matter the cost. When news comes of the capture of her beloved Alex, Mary vows to rescue him. As a defiant Alex is tried in London as a traitor, though all he did was to give his life to save his men, Mary unleashes her own campaign on London society to win justice for him. I loved Alex, Lord Kilgannon, too. He is all Scot, all man, very romantic, and loves his woman fiercely. He fights with the best of them, leads men well and keeps his humor no matter the peril.
You might want to read these two books before: On A Highland Shore and Rivals for the Crown. They involve the same family/clan but are set generations earlier (13th century). It helped having the earlier story to understand where Clan Kilgannon came from, though it is not essential to enjoying The Wild Rose of Kilgannon, which is based in the 1700s.

The conclusion of the story begun in Kilgannon. Alex is tried for treason in England and Mary does everything she can to save him. Good ending to the story, I was glad they finally had a child. I enjoyed these books, they were very well written. The time period and setting came to life in the pages. I also enjoyed Alex and Mary's romance.

The Wild Rose of Kilgannon is the continuation of Mary and Alexander MacGannon's story. Alexander, against his wife's wishes and his own judgement joins the Jacobites and fights against King George's army in the First Jacobite Rebellion. When king James flees Scotland and the Rising fails, the Scottish leaders bear the brunt of King George's disfavour. Alexander gives himself up to the British army in exchange for his clan's safety. Will Mary be able to rescue him before it's too late?
Given that Alex is imprisoned and the story is told from Mary's perspective, you would expect that she would be filled with terror and distressed by her own helplessness, and maybe she was, but I never felt that in the story, unfortunately. There were several scenes where she thought about how it was the last time she would see her husband, but there was very little emotional impact and because of the repetition, I started to get bored. In the end, I think this would have been stronger had it been cut down to several important scenes and included at the end of Kilgannon.

This second book, the sequel to Kilgannon, was much better than the first. I have decided to view the first book as "setting the scene" and providing the background for the second book. In actuality, the two books should have been combined into one; however, most people will not read books that are 600 pages long. I, on the other hand, do not mind at all if the story is riveting enough to hold my attention.
While there still was not much history as far as battles, the story line was much more developed and not as trite as the first book. Most of the book dealt with the aftermath of the failed '15 Jacobite uprising. However, the ending made it seem as though there should be another book, a continuation of Mary and Alex's saga.

Es geht weiter in der Kilgannon-Reihe und in der Geschichte von Mary und Alex, dem wilden Earl of Kilgannon und dem Schloss an der rauen Küste Schottlands.In diesem Roman geht es allerdings nicht mehr um die Eroberung von Mary, sondern darum, dass Mary den verletzten und von den Engländern gefangenen Alex als einzige retten und befreien kann und es kommt noch ein früherer Verehrer von Mary dazu.Der historische Roman gibt uns einen guten Einblick in den englisch-schottischen Krieg und ist zusätzlich garniert mit der Liebesgeschichte von Alex und Mary und ihren beiden Kindern!Toll geschrieben und recherchiert!Man möchte gar nicht aufhören zu lesen!Es ist so geschrieben, als wäre man dabei!Absolute Leseempfehlung!

(If it matters to you, it's true that the ebook version of Book One had many formatting errors, but this book has almost none.)
This is one of the most emotionally draining fiction books I've ever read—angst upon dread that occurs over and over. But I kept pushing forward because I had to know how it would end, and it was worth it. It's a gut-wrenching saga, and while I was enthralled with it, I was also needing to finish it because it was so intense.
I'm told that this was originally intended to be a four book series. If that's the case then it makes sense that Book One (Kilgannon) was such a cake walk compared to this book. Book One told the tale of a charming courtship then some dramatic moments in Alex and Mary's early marriage. We got to know this couple well and understand their cultures, and it was a great set up to Book Two. The beginning of this book is a brief overview of what happened in Book One so it can be read as a standalone but I wouldn't recommend it. You will know and appreciate these characters so much more if you read Book One first.
In this Book Two (The Wild Rose Of Kilgannon) all hell breaks loose. I can't give specifics because I wouldn't want anyone to not experience this with virgin eyes. Suffice it to say there is war, betrayal, political corruption, brutality and revenge, intermixed with love, loyalty, honor, pride and bravery. It's an edge-of-your-seat nail biter from beginning to end with multiple points of dread and adventure.
God bless Mary Rose. She's hopelessly devoted to an original adrenaline junky. Their further adventures in hypothetical Books Three and Four would have been spectacular. But I can be satisfied with this ending. It was pretty great actually.
These are the first two books ever written by this author and she has only grown in her later books. (On a Highland Shore is one not to be missed.) Her writing style is beautifully descriptive, her research is strong, and her passion for Scotland and its history is evident. Unfortunately Ms. Givens passed away in 2010 so we will need to cherish what we now have of her works.

Sequel is much better than the first of this series
I was not happy with the first novel, Kilgannon, and I was only reading this sequel to satisfy my curiosity about the rest of the story. The writing style improves with this second book, and the story along with it. I'm glad I persevered and read this. There are still elements that I found implausible at times, and I didn't really like the main character Mary, but this second installment was a definite improvement on the first and I'm happy to recommend it for anyone wanting a highland tale filled with history.

This one is more historical fiction than romance, since Mary is happily married and stays that way, but like its predecessor it's basically a less stressful version of Outlander. All those parts where Claire had to trade sex or got raped or someone else got raped or whatever are replaced with a Bad Guy leering at Mary's breasts while she worries that if she tells her powerful duke uncle about it he will be super, super angry on her behalf and there might be unspecified bad consequences.

It feels like there should be a third book. The ending was very abrupt and felt incomplete.

Swept along for the ride and lived it with them!
I've just finished this book and the one before it in two days with a toddler under foot, I simply could not put it down. Firstly let me say it was worth the investment both in time and money. If Kathleen Givens decides to write a third book in this story I will be buying it without hesitation. And while it's not entirely a cliff hanger ending, she leaves you with enough questions to allow for a third follow on novel, so I'm hopeful.
Her style of writing is detailed and full of emotion. The characters are strong and their passions high. Motives are clear and relatable, even the uncomfortable ones at times. Villains and hero's are well developed and believable. The historical setting is thoroughly researched and blended seamlessly with the physical environment and the landscape. I felt like I could smell the wild Kilgannon roses and feel the sting of salt air on my face.
A lot happens in this book as its story starts half way through the saga. I felt the start of the first book was a bit slow but appreciated it by the end of this one. A few times I felt slightly annoyed by yet another thing going wrong because Kathleen writes so well I was feeling everything the characters felt and it was a bit hard to catch a breath at times. However this goes closer to reality than many historical novels manage and the payoff is worth it. No simpering females or arrogant hero's here, but rather gritty humanity in all its dubious glory.
If you've got some time and some tissues you'll be taken back in time to a world that's so far from our own yet not so different after all. Best book (two books) I've read in a while!

I would like to give it 3.5 stars, because it was very good. Character development was well done, and the story moved at a good pace. The story was very enjoyable and if I hadn't read some of the reviews that should have been marked with spoilers but weren't, I think the would have had more intensity and more of the intended cliff-hanger effect. I had picked this book because it was on a list of best highlander romanced along with The Pride of Lions by Canham. It just missed for me. Many of the scenes were highly emotional, but I expected Mary to finally rise to the occasion, but never did, even though it mentions her trying to control her temper again and again, she never let loose and let some of the characters have it. I understand the time period and how women were, but I still think she should have at least put them in their place instead of bursting into tears at every turn of events. Alex was a great character but I was slightly bothered by his insecurities with Mary's devotion. All that said, it was a good book, but not one I am going to recommend with the same enthusiasm I would for Canham's or Gabaldon's. Definitely not on that level. I would love to find another one of those.

Another good story by Kathleen Givens. This is a continuation of the book "Kilgannon" in which Mary and Alex meet and marry. Drawn into a fight he would rather not be in, Alex goes off to fight the British invasion of Scotland, and saves his men by being captured. Mary goes to London to save him from execution, and finds that one of the judges is a reprobate, lyar and sexual pervert. he tries to bargain with Mary, imprisones her to re-capture Alex who has been freed bu his men, and the suspense begins. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

I have heard the Voyager series by Diana Gabladon is better than the Kilgannon series. I guess since I haven't read the Voyager series I wasn't making comparisons throughout and I enjoyed it. I thought it was a decent sequel to Kilgannon...it picks up where the other leaves off (I think it could have just been one long book, but I understand why a publisher would want to make two books instead). The characters in this book are great...I really like the supporting characters, especially Matthew.

I really like the main characters, Mary and Alex, and so I could forgive the fact that in this book a lot happened while at the same time nothing happened. We had the same parting scene over and over. We had various men making propositions of the married Mary. We had to pick up and move the family multiple times under dangerous circumstances. And then, while the story came to an end, we were clear that the troubles were not over. But there is not a third book, and sadly the author passed away, so that will have to be the end of the Kilgannon saga.

Such a disappointment. I liked the first one, but this was pure agony. The heroine was so dumb and boring, could not comprehend anything she was told. I think this was because the book only followed her thoughts, so in order to know what happened with everyone else, it had to be spelled out for her (and thus for us), making her seem slow and witless. Even Alex's prison stay would have been more exciting. Not to say anything about the fact that after several miscarriages in a calm and safe environment, of course she will have a baby when she's stressed and scared out of her mind. Seems legit.

What a stressful, stressful novel!! It was all threatening to kill off my favorite characters, making me afraid something bad would happen every second and then tricking me into thinking some were dead! Augh, I only pushed through so I could see the end and see where we would end up. I would give this a 2.5 if I could... Towards the end, like 10 pages from the very end, I almost threw the damn book across the room.

Eine schöne Fortsetzung beim nach dem ersten Teil, aber zwischendurch ziemlich unnötig brutal. Ganz viel Herzschmerz würzen diese Geschichte und danach sind einem die Engländer noch ein bisschen unsympathischer.
Aber auch nach dieser Geschichte freue ich mich nicht in dieser Zeit als Frau leben zu müssen, die immer wieder Angst haben muss, das ihr Mann sich in den Tod begibt und selbst keine Meinung dazu haben darf.

I liked this book well enough... although if I didn't love the first book so much... I don't know if I would've liked this one as much. I don't like how the heroine and hero are apart for the majority of the book. Plus, the story line could drag a little in parts. Overall, though... it was a very enjoyable read :)

I didn't enjoy this book as much as On a Highland Shore. I felt like there was a lot of exposition and not a lot of character development. And the main character, Mary Rose, kind of drove me crazy after awhile. Yes, it's one thing to be strong, but it's another not to heed advice of those who may know better.

Much faster pace than the first book in the series. I understand the author originally wrote the two books as a single book and was forced to split into two separate books due to length. I would have preferred to read this as a single book. Overall great, well written story and I recommend (just read the books back to back).

I wanted to read the second one because I wanted to know what happened and hoped that they would delve into the rebellion, etc. It was just ok. The best parts of the book, again, are the secondary characters like Angus and Matthew.

I loved the writing and the story. It kept me full of emotion throughout. Definitely well worth a read.

An excellent read as was the first book. Now, I must find the next in the series.

Although I didnot read the first book, I feel this book would have been better if I had. It was slow and confusing in parts where it directly referenced something I was not privy to.

dragged on too much with the trial. the last 50 pages were exciting but should have been 150 pages with less time on the trial.
