I would call this novel erotic fantasy. This book is wild. It's highly erotic, but one of the kinkiest I've read. It hooked me from the very beginning and kept me reading nonstop until I finished it. I thought it was fascinating.

WARNING! MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

I find "La Queue de Cheval" ("The Horse's Tail") the most compelling of de Lully's "Affairs of the Heart" trilogy, and I expected it to be the least enjoyable. I admit pony play (BDSM animal role play) is a bit beyond the pale to me and doesn't fall into my definition of "sexy." Under de Lully's exceptional talent, it works well.

De Lully has a knack for portraying emotional depth and human complexity in her work few erotica authors match. This tightly written novella explores a woman's quest for sensual gratification, for financial security and status, and for love. Bathshire Stables may be the answer for sex and money, but love may have to be left behind.

Angie is a remarkable protagonist. I liked how honest she was, even when she double-guessed herself or attempted to deny the less savory aspects of her ambitions. Angie doesn't sugar-coat her intentions (essentially prostituting herself as a human sex toy for the highest bidder,) nor is she ashamed of them. She doesn't leap into her decision blindly, nor do dire circumstances force her into it. I think many readers, male or female, can relate to where Angie's head is. She hasn't found "Mr. Right" and doesn't understand her own sensual needs, so she funnels her energy and ambition towards a career she suspects may satisfy her.

Angie's experiences at Bathshire Stables are depicted in sensuous detail. The author conveyes Angie's fears, desires, and erotic responses to the decadence surrounding her. Angie's visits are alternated with chapters describing her normal life and this allows better understanding of Angie's motivations to be a pony girl. It isn't just her submissisve nature; loneliness and desire for intimacy factor into her choice. Pony play fulfills Angie in a way mundane office jobs and superficial dates cannot. She receives attention and care and satisfaction that almost -- almost -- substitute for love.

Then she finds Jack, a fine strapping working-class fireman who moonlights as a groom in Bathshire, and nothing is the same. Adept at dominating a pony girl properly, Jack can offer Angie all the attention, care, and satisfaction her prospective clients can without the financial reward. And love her like crazy. It's crunch time, and Angie must decide once and for all where she most wants to belong.

Only one "issue" stood out to me in this story. I felt Angie and Jack's romance would have been vastly more credible if the two characters shared a longer, better-established history. "La Queue de Cheval" covers about a three week period. Given Angie's mercenary/gold digger characterization, it's hard to imagine her willingly giving up her opportunities as a pony girl for a man she doesn't know all that well. A lot of de Lully's work contains a strong fairytale/fantasy element, so the "love at first sight" doesn't bother me that much, but I would have liked to see a bit more development.

This is escapist reading, however, and a strong touch of "love at first sight" shouldn't deter lovers of good quality erotica from considering this book.

I bought this ebook on the basis of a recommendation on the Dear Author website for another Michele de Lully's books, La Bonne, and bought this at the same time. This was the first one read, and I have to admit, it blew me away a bit. I'd never heard of pony play and kept wondering if this was fantasy or if such a thing existed. I ended up reading this in a night; I was not only intrigued by the concept and the level of kink, but I really enjoyed the author's writing style. The ending felt rushed, and therefore slightly disappointing, but I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

This is pure fantasy. I didn't enjoy it. Wikipedia pony-play before you buy. There were some hot scenes, but it was just weird, it reminded me of the movie Eyes Wide Shut.
