Was it the death of her dog, Bloom, or was she just tired of her routine as a dentist? Or perhaps her depression was the result of her (mostly) unrequited love for her former piano teacher, Bruno? As Robin contemplates a sabbatical to see puffins in Newfoundland, a fateful google search puts everything on hold. When she *accidentally* finds Bruno's grown son-or a younger double-living in France with a woman Bruno knew briefly many many years ago, Robin has a stay in Canada and monitor her distant father's suspected dementia, or accept Bruno's demand that she go with him to France, and help him face fatherhood a few decades too late.
Cashmere Comes from Goats is an unusual, unexpected, quirky tale that reveals then dissects then eviscerates then puzzles though the journey of a woman discovering whats to become of her. Densely written word play with delightful pockets of uproarious humour (I said I'd stay for a glass of wine, I should have said vineyard [not an exact quote]) and chasms of darkness. Beware. Behold. Cashmere most definitely does not come from bunnies.
Portico's characters became my friends as I read her novel.
I need time to think of my new friends....Robin. Mika. Amelie. Bruno. Simon.
I connected with her characters. Sometimes, I was them. Sometimes, I wanted to scold them. Sometimes, I wanted to hug them. Even now, I still sit and ask questions about the characters' decisions and ponder about what I would do in their situations. That shows the power of Portico's stories and how she intertwines between the past and the present and how she weaves the intricate lives of the characters - of hopes, dreams, love and disappointments - of real lives and real outcomes.
What a wonderful pace as this story weaves between the lives of varied personalities and cultures. Connected to the characters, but wasn't sure in the beginning, because the main character wasn't as warm right away. She becomes completely endearing and I ended up wanting to help her, but I also appreciated her. The story takes you on a trail you've never been before. Am definitely looking forward to reading more from this author. Five stars all the way!
I read Cashmere Comes from Goats several months ago and I really loved it. I found it thought-provoking and endearing. I was gobsmacked by the imagery and the humanity of it. The characters and the relationships felt very real to me in all their incongruity. Genuine and sincere.
