February 27, 2024This one was just ok for me, but I think I'm not the right audience for it. The horny young women part seemed so unnatural and forced and I could never make myself care about any of the characters so it only got interesting for me near the end.

I absolutely love, love, love, Jim's stories and this was no exception. It centre around a camping holiday in an idyllic setting. A perfect place for a family getaway, right?
Wrong!
Here we meet a group of characters from different walks of life, all with their own secrets buried within. I really don't want to say much about the plot because it will spoil it for others. Suffice to say, this one is creepy and will leave you dangling on the edge of your seat throughout the whole book to its fantastic climax.
Loved it and highly recommend it.

Creepy and atmospheric this book is like a great horror movie in novel form. The author had gone from strength to strength in his writing and this is fabulous to read. Not for the faint hearted but well plotted and intrigiing

From the very first page, we are drawn in by the creepy atmosphere set out by this author. By the end of the first chapter, the deaths have started and there is no going back. You're hooked. I knew from that moment I was going to enjoy this one and I did.
Fast-paced, atmospheric and just an overall amazing book. Those last few chapters though... Wow. Things just go crazy, and just when you think things are going to go one way, Jim Ody throws another twist in and completely obliterates the ending you foresaw.
I have been left with some questions but I'm about to start book number 2 so I'm hoping it's explained.
Absolutely brilliant book. Just like with most of my recent reads, I must warn you to avoid if you aren't fond of gruesome deaths.

What a heart-pumping, bloody, and creepy as hell start!
Within the surroundings of a beautiful campsite full of mysterious happenings, locals and vacationers have gathered, each with skeletons in their closets. What are their secrets and what happens if they are exposed?
It was almost Hitchcockian as there was such a dramatic opening, then grew into this murder mystery web. I say 'almost' because it was not a predictable storyline in the slightest. I finished it hours ago and still thinking of all the complexities.
There were quite a few characters, but with such great detail, development, and witty writing that I didn't get lost, I "knew" them. I was transported to the more simple school days of mean girls, boys showing off, crushes and heartbreak, and then of complex adult problems and choices made. There were some deliciously flawed humans with toxic family dynamics. It was a creative combination of perhaps Clue and Laymon, Saw and April Fool's Day.
"Will sat down and opened the crisps. Bloody ready salted. Did anyone like ready salted?" I love reading British books, there are always these unfamiliar language gems "ready salted crisps" Google let me know, and no Jim, no one likes those.

I really enjoyed this! I went in just expecting a slasher but it'd actually got a lot of story involved. Can't wait to read the second

This is a chilling book made more chilling by the apparent normality of a lot of it. Groups of people have checked into Tall Trees campsite and all seems relatively normal..... apart from some strange goings on. As the reader we are aware of all of these things. However, the characters obviously aren’t. Another really well written books.

A great story set in Tall Trees Campsite. Lots of interesting characters but all with secrets that they want to keep hidden.
A well written book that I probably shouldn’t have read at night! Little Miss Evil certainly sent some shivers down my spine as well as turning my stomach in some places!
A great plot that all came together to give a fantastic ending! I couldn’t put this book down, I needed to know more and see how this was all going to end!
A well deserved 5 stars from me.

2.5 rounded up to 3 stars.
The location is Tall Trees Campsite. A place where vacationers as well as the locals gather for a carefree getaway. Except there isn't anything carefree about this place when you discover the dark history behind it. For separate groups of people, things are about to get bloody!
We follow different perspectives: Three teen girls who end up meeting three guys. A couple out for a romantic getaway. Keith, the strange guy who runs the place, a small boy vacationing with his mom and Marshall, who lives near the campsite with his family. They each have a dark secret that ends up intertwining.
I have mixed feelings about this book. It starts off super strong with a dark prologue that immediately drew me but then lost me in the middle and didn't start to get any better until about the 70% mark. Basically, I only enjoyed the beginning and the end.
The reason why I cannot rate this book any higher was the incredibly irritating and unlikable cast of horny characters. I couldn't stand anyone except maybe 2 people. The dialogue interactions made my eyes roll with all the hypersexual jokes between four specific set of characters that last throughout the majority of the book. They just ended up blending into one big blob to the point where I couldn't differentiate who was who.

The death scenes were good but over and done with swiftly. Which is fine, but considering how much I disliked the characters, I was hoping for a more meaningful and drawn out death...
I did love how everyone's dark secret unfolded and got together, I thought that was well done and it's what kind of saved the book for me. There's also hints of a creepy little girl that I really enjoyed.
With all that said, I would still encourage people to give this book a shot considering it's got mostly 4 and 5 star reviews. If I don't like a character that sticks around for a while, it just wouldn't work for me personally. One thing that's for sure, is that this book cover is super awesome!

Wow!! This is a truly gripping horrorfest, which will make you look at camping holidays in a whole new light. Tall Trees is set in an idyllic location, on the edge of a lake and the perfect place for a getaway with family or friends, or is it?? Jim Ody weaves together a seemingly unconnected group of visitors to Tall Trees campsite, teasingly revealing little snippets about the characters, making you wonder what secrets they're hiding and how they fit with the growing pile of bodies. Keith, the owner's son is downright creepy, voyeuristic and oblivious to why he isn't more of a hit with the ladies. The teens on their first holiday away without parents are characters that most of us can relate to, we've either been them or had them as friends. And how are the couple staying in the house in the village linked? A house that's seen it's share of horror and tragedy. As the novel draws to it's thrilling climax (which I didn't see coming) the blood and dismemberment seem to grow unchecked, it's a complete whirlwind ~ I felt like I was on a runaway rollercoaster, which each page revealing something new an If the rest of the series is in a similar vein, then I'm sure they'll be a success.

Another amazing book by one of my favourite authors ! Looking for a creepy , scary thrilling read? Then check this one out !
This book is jam packed with everything I love in this type of book , lots of characters each bringing something too the story (sometimes tricky to remember who is who) , a great setting with the campfire burning, the trees surrounding in the woodland.
This book plays out so beautifully in your mind as you are reading it, you can practically hear the scary horror music in your mind as you read it. You end up finding yourself gripping onto the book (or kindle) , desperate to know what is going to happen next . It has the perfect classic horror story but very much mixed with new .

I was so excited to read this one. It's been on my TBR for almost a year and I FINALLY got to it...and it definitely wasn't for me. I knew around the 25% mark that I wasn't enjoying it but pressed on in the hopes it would come together for me and it ended up being a slog for me instead.
Let me start with the things I did like. I liked the short chapters. These were probably the only reason I was able to finish the book...each chapter is so short it's easy to convince yourself to keep going.
I also really enjoyed a few isolated scenes here and there...like the prologue and a couple of the kill scenes. I also really enjoyed the setting...the camp, the town, etc. I think that was well done.
Unfortunately...that's about it. I didn't like ANY of the many POVs we follow (I think I counted 11 different POVs...some had more chapters than others). Following so many characters meant I didn't get invested in any of them. No one came alive for me off the page...I didn't feel like I really got inside anyone's head. And so...I just didn't care.
I also really struggled with the writing style...the phrasing and word choices. It was tough for me and repeated errors (missing words, extra words, words out of order, etc) kept pulling me out of the story. I'm pretty forgiving of these things when they happen a couple of times in a book...but here it was often enough to really affect my reading experience in a negative way. If that type of stuff doesn't have that kind of impact on you...give it a try. But if it does then I'd suggest skipping this one.
I think there was definitely potential here...but it just didn't work for me. I think a narrower storyline and fewer POVs could have made this more impactful...or at least it may have worked a lot better for me.
Not saying I wouldn't give the author another chance...but even though I own book 2 I don't see myself jumping to read it any time soon.

This is the third book I have read from Jim Ody and perhaps the most gruesome. The campsite sounds a lovely spot in which to catch up with friends and enjoy the countryside. It has all the amenities you would expect, great food, lots of alcohol, plenty of space for picnics and room to dance. What you don’t expect, however, is the threat of death and dismemberment.
A group of friends rent a log cabin in which to rest up and have fun. They spot a group of boys around their age and soon they all get together. There is something not quite right about the man who runs the site, who seems to pop up all the time, making attempts to join them. Eventually they stop minding, and welcome him to take part in their activities.
There are real horror stories behind the pleasant facades, as over the last five years people have died in horrific situations. No one can understand how these stories weren’t on the front pages, but they are persuaded that the stories were buried by local journalists.
Things turn from bad to worse as the friends continue with their holiday. How can they get out of the situations in which they find themselves? This book is not for the faint hearted!

Tall Trees Campsite ..so pretty from the outside, with lots of woodland and trail paths for those who love the kind of place to get away from it all ...But Tall Trees has a darkness that is hidden ...Its Evil ..its shadowy..And for a group of people who go there for fun,to escape the realities of everyday life...well they have no idea what awaits them there ...How much of the stories that are whispered round Tall Trees true ..? Jim Ody's darkest..most creepiest writing ..I might just sleep with the light on tonight .....

I recently discovered Jim Ody via Instagram and have read several of his books, and this one has to be my favourite so far!
Very fast paced right from the beginning, then the last 4/5 chapters were so explosive I literally could not put it down.
Much more gorier than his other books, with a lot more violence - which in my opinion is never a bad thing as you can never have too much of that in these sort of books!
So glad I got the chance to read this - I saw that this is the beginning of a new series - can't wait for the next installment.

LITTLE MISS EVIL is creepy and frightening before anything even occurs, only to suddenly turn heartbreaking, terrifying and monstrous. Preternatural events leave a pervasive, eerie, ominous atmosphere. Insidious, heinous, malevolence spreads over everything like a shroud. The origins of this mystifying nightmare are positively unfathomable.

This is the 3rd Jim ody book I’ve had the pleasure of reading. I have to say this one has been my favourite.
It was fast paced with something happening in every chapter.
I kept trying to work out what was happening throughout and pleased that I never did.
It was such a gruesome book with lots of twists and turns. I found it quite creepy in places.

What a cracking little thriller! Creepy, chilling and totally absorbing. A very clever plot, very intriguing and had me second guessing throughout. Love the way Jim Ody puts a story together, full of surprises and very engaging. A book that keeps your toes very much curled up beneath you....Keep the lights on and turn the radio off. Great storytelling.

If you enjoy a gruesome horror then this is the book for you. Jim has created another great book which weaves the stories of the different characters together with a ending that I wasn't expecting. Looking forward to reading more from Jim Ody.

This is a tough review to write without giving away any spoilers! So I'll keep it brief. If you like Friday 13th type movies, like me, then you'll love this book! Also, it has a cheeky wee twist which is always a welcome ending.

This is my first of Jim's reads and absolutely won't be the last.
A couple decide to have a week away in an old country cottage.
Next door is a camp where teenagers go to have the fun of youth. Drink, party and hook up.
Strange things start happening, the song Silent Night starts playing in the house, it seems like a young girl is running away.
There are so many different people and things going on, but it doesn't ever get confusing. Its very tense and there are such very jumpy moments.
The ending really ramps up and it ends with a bang.

A slow burner
After what I found to be a very slow start (it took over 100 pages for me to get into) I found the ending quite good. This may be a Young Adult fiction genre? X

A beautiful setting, a holiday cottage & an idyllic campsite in the woods, the perfect location for this deliciously dark offering from Jim Ody. The story unfolds amidst mystery, as many a ghost story does, with the laughter of a child & the whispers of locals, but it’s not long before the reader is pulled into something much darker. With goosebumps rising on my arms, I galloped through the pages with trepidation, wondering who, why, how, and coming out the other side with wide-eyes. This is a refreshingly new venture for this author, who’s books I truly admire, and I’m delighted to see that it’s the first in an intended series. Atmospheric, deep and convincing.

I found that there were a lot of characters to get to grips with, I started reading in small intervals (life gets in the way sometimes) then after 16% decided I needed to wait until I could give it my full attention. Started again yesterday and finished today. Really great when you can follow all the characters, each one individually is very interesting. Loved how it all comes together. I’m not normally a fan of horror but this one definitely grabbed my attention after a slightly slow start. Definitely allow enough time to get up to speed with the characters.
