A red-haired princess loses her family and her kingdom… Now she must rise and fight for her throne!
Princess Yona lives an ideal life as the only princess of her kingdom. Doted on by her father, the king, and protected by her faithful guard Hak, she cherishes the time spent with the man she loves, Su-won. But everything changes on her 16th birthday when tragedy strikes her family!
Feeling sick from the Crimson Illness, Su-won is unable to attend a conference with a South Kai delegation. Yona goes in his stead and manages to hold her own, but what will she do when someone blames her for the death of one of the delegation members?!
This volume delves deeper and deeper into the politics of Kouka, that is on the verge of a war with Sai. A lot of people complained that this arc was boring, but I think it is perfect in developing the characters and making the plot progress. You don't need big fight scenes to make it interesting, and Kusanagi truly gets it. Especially after the revelations of the past volume, it's so interesting to see the characters interact with each other, especially Soowon and Yona. They're incredible individually, and their relationship with each other is just so, so interesting to read about. Soowon just wants to keep his composure and his leading role as king despite his fragile health, while Yona steps up more and more in her role of queen, which leads the two in a fragile balance of cooperation. And I'm so excited to know what's going to happen next !
We also get to know new characters, like Mei Nyan. She is so interesting, and my weak wlw heart truly feels for her. That scene in the dungeons really had me on the edge of my seat. She is such an interesting villain, and offers a nice contrary of Soowon and his way of dealing with things. I can't wait to see where this will lead us (especially with Yoon learning more and more medicine at the castle...).
And as always, I'm in love with Hak, who is by far the best character of these past chapters.
I wouldn't say this was a lighter volume then the previous volume, but I'm thankful for the laughter I had in this one and it definitely not being depressing!
These politics are getting me but I was so very relieved to see Yona be "in her element." Her kindness and compassion reminds me so much of past volumes and how I missed those days. But she's super incredible! I know in this moment she is needed in the palace and has completely rocked it! (No way I could handle this new situation with anywhere nearly as much grace or awesomeness as her!) But I truly miss the days of old in this series and might go back and reread it because I just enjoyed their crazy days of hiding, fighting, and then being together by the campfire.
We got a Yona and Hak moment and YAY YAY YAY!!!!! I didn't plan to get one for a while, but it was well worth the wait and took out all the tension of this low-key stressed fangirl! LOL!! And SINHAAAAAA!!! That one panel made him shine in all his amazingness!!
AND THE DRAGONS!!!! YESSSSSS!! I was so relieved and happy to see them again that I literally got teary-eyed! HA! But what a wonderful moment! The whole gang is almost united, though Yun!! I miss seeing your pretty boy genius face! (Also, Hak and Jaeha going incognito was perfection!)
This new character we meet really tugged at my heartstrings. Well, AFTER a certain conversation because at first I thought her character design was cool (still do!), but then once she showed her real colors, that was a hard pass from me. It genuinely wasn't until that conversation that I felt a change of heart and just felt so much compassion on her behalf. (Yona please continue to show mercy. Don't listen to that dumb advisor in him saying its a bother or nuisance because it most certainly is NOT!)
Also, such a minor thing, but when Yona tells Su-won to look her in the eyes when they talk was an EXCELLENT moment!
Overall, a really good volume! Grateful for many of the events that took place and feel I'll be able to sleep without feeling anywhere near as downhearted as I did at the end of the previous volume (which is certainly a relief LOL)!
Oh MY GOODNESS. Just “what the heck?!?!?” with everything!!!! If the buildup to the eventual war is this intense, what is the actual battle going to be like?!?!?! I’m almost scared to find out, yikes!!! 😬😱
Our Happy Hungry Bunch is still separated for the most part, but thankfully they are coming back together bit by bit. But what Advisor Keishuk did to Hak is unacceptable!!!!!! If I didn’t want to throw him off a cliff before… 😡😡 But then the mangaka has him do something that actually made me laugh and feel a bit endeared towards him, and I’m just like whaaaat?!?!?!? How does she do that?!?!? This mangaka has a literal GIFT with writing complex characters who are totally REAL and I just can’t with her characters and plot! Because every time I think I have either figured out, she throws in a loop that leaves my jaw on the floor somewhere and me going WHAAATTTT?!?!?! She’s a pure writing master, people.
And Yona…goodness this girl has GROWN and I couldn’t be prouder of her! She handles everything thrown at her with wisdom and grace and compassion and an open mind and heart and I just can’t with this amazing princess! She’s going to make one wonderful queen. 🥰🥰🥰 And her and Hak together…squeeee!!!!!! Just perfect, utterly perfect. 🥰😍🥰😍🥰😍
The twists and turns of this story leave me having NO IDEA where we’re going next and I’m both excited and nervous to see where things go from here. Though I will say I TOTALLY didn’t expect the volume to end the way it did—I cracked up laughing the second I read it! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Too funny and unexpected considering what’s going on right now.
SO excited to keep reading this wonderful series that has completely stolen my heart! 🥰🥰
Content
Violence: fighting, injuries, and blood (nothing over PG-13)
Sexual: kissing; a character is mentioned to be a concubine; mild suggestive hints/comments; a shirtless guy
Other: a character throws up on another (not shown); a character is poisoned and dies (we see the person’s body with foam around his mouth); a character is falsely accused of poisoning another; characters have a fatal illness
Hak finally noticed that Su-won is sick. I know that brought up a lot of complicated feelings. I love how Yona came to the rescue and saved him from being killed. The kisses they shared was so sweet! I want them to be together!
Mei is interesting. The fact that she used to be a general and had the crimson curse wants to make me know more about her. Her using her femininity to her advantage is so cool to see. It’s was interesting to see her have a different view of the crimson curse. I wonder what will happen.
Thoughts while reading: - OH NOT THEM TRYING TO FRAME MY GIRL! - Yessss see her as his successor! - AHHH NOT THEM BOTH CATCHING HER - AHHHHHHHHHHH YESSSSSS - Hak looks so good omg - New princess alert - Yesss the dragonsss big slay - I love how Aoi and the other princess pet is throwing stuff at each other - Yes I love women manipulating men!
First read on 9/28/21 Thoughts while reading:
- AHHH HAK - HE BEAT HIM? - Periodddd yona get your man - AHHHHHHH THE KISS - who is this lady? - THE DRAGONS YAY - AWWWW THAT SHORT STORY WAS SO CUTE
Recap: one of the Kai ambassadors confides in Yona and then dies of poisoning. Kai points fingers, Hak comes to investigate, Suwon decides to hold a funeral and Hak finds outs about Suwons illness. Hak is imprisoned and Yona comes to ensure he remains alive. Hak also kisses her silly!!!! Then Kai’s emperors favored concubine reveals she’s also suffering from crimson sickness, is imprisoned and ends with her meeting Hak.
this is definitely my least favorite arc. it's moving too slow and i feel like author waited too long to tell us most of this stuff, it would've flowed better if it didn't all have to get revealed rn but oh well. at least yona got to see the dragons again
I AM BEING FED SO GOOD WITH YONA AND HAK RIGHT NOW WOW WHAT IS THIS i can't believe we're actually getting them kissing so much is this a dream???? also the hak x suwon angst is COMING i can FEEL it he already knows he's sick WE'RE GETTING THE ANGST FINALLY
then out of nowhere some random ass girl shows up to say she wants... hak??? oh this poor soul doesn't know what's in store for her

Think I'm read for the court intrigue stuff to be over. The story is best when these guys are on their journey and having their adventures. It's sad to see Su-Won off his game. There's a new character, but I'm not sure I see how she's going to fit into the dynamic
Oh, don’t mind me. I’m quite satisfied myself here. Yona gaining upper-hand now, I used to despise this arc having Yona on the castle, but I see the clearer picture now. And the Hak and Yona graciously served to us, it was worth it!! Oh, that kiss! And Yona dear, you can very much call him a lover, you know. You’ve exchanged your I love yous already and you’ve been kissing, what do you call that? Also, that cafe extra is just done right, I love it!
