Eden Wyatt knows three things to be true: She’s a mother. She’s a survivor. She’s a killer.
After murdering her husband, Eden’s committed to a hospital for the criminally insane. She has forty-five days before her evaluation for indefinite imprisonment to convince them she’s no longer a danger to herself or others, even if it isn’t true. But as they dig into her past, a picture of a vengeful woman emerges.
When a custody suit is brought by her sister-in-law, evidence surfaces, suggesting Eden is spiraling out of control again. She can’t remember putting the knife under her mattress or what she yells as they drag her out of the court hearing… She only knows she’ll do whatever it takes to keep her son.
Can she accept what she’s done when she uncovers the truth? Or will the facts finally push her over the edge?

This book starts off with a bang. Eden Wyatt is wondering around a grocery store after she apparently murdered her husband. That had me hooked. The book then follows her stint in a hospital for the criminally insane while she tries to put the pieces together about what actually happened that night.
Chapters alternate between Eden and fellow patient Layla. As secrets are revealed Eden must decide if she can accept what she’s done or will it be the straw that broke the camels back?
I enjoyed this read. It was easy to read and easy to lose track of time as you get wrapped up in the mystery.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
I could not put this book down. I totally gobbled it up and it was delicious from start to explosive finish. The riveting story is told in two perspectives: Eden's and Layla's. Eden's story begins in the present. She's been locked up a psych hospital for the murder of her husband. Layla's tale starts in the past, from the time they met in group therapy, all the way through as the murder unfolds, to the present. There were so many bombshells along the way.
This story is so suspenseful. I was absolutely dying to find out every truth, every intention. I was stunned by it all. An excellent, gripping, and addicting thriller.
This is a suspense thriller written by Eva Mackenzie. This one begins with Eden Wyatt who is roaming around in a grocery store in a daze covered in blood. It turns out she had just murdered her husband and is soon locked up but then found not guilty by reason of insanity. She then finds her way into a mental ward preparing for her hearing in about 40 days where she will try and convince them to find her fit to be released so she can go back to her son who is staying with her friend Layla who currently has custody of her child.
On paper this book looks to be awesome. We have a batshit crazy woman locked in a mental ward trying to convince her doctors she is sane enough to go back into the world while at the same time try and get her son and out of the hands of her sister in law who is trying to gain custody for money reasons. Who doesn't like watching a crazy train wreck?
This book is very good and also very bad.....
Let's look at the good stuff: It's well written and the beginning of the book really has a creepy, claustrophobic feel as Eden navigates life in a mental ward. Complete with white walls and creepy wards. In my mind life in a mental ward is interesting enough and Mackenzie does a good job with life amongst some super crazy people. There are parts that are chilling and suspenseful. It's written in two POVs: Eden's POV in the present time moving forward to her hearing and her best friend's Layla's POV in the past moving forward. The two plotlines are handled very well as they meet together. There are actually a ton of things going on in regards to Eden's life in the ward, her legal troubles trying to keep her son away from her crazy sister in law. Plus someone either on the inside or outside is trying to damage her character so she doesn't get released.
The bad: I love thrillers but I'm not a fan of predictable ones. This one was very predictable in a paint by numbers way. It basically follows a plotline followed by hundreds of writers in the past and basically goes through all the motions towards the ending. I knew exactly how this book was going to end..... I just needed to know how she was going to do it. You will guess the twist early on and just read until you figured out why and how. It made later stages of the book somewhat boring as you navigate towards the ending.
At the end of the day the book is good enough to read as I did read the whole book. While very predictable it was still well written and suspenseful enough to read through. I would definitely read another book from this author. If you have the time on your TBR list go for it..... If not consider passing on this one.
Thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this book via R&R Book Tours in exchange for my honest review.
I've read 2 other books by this author, and I enjoyed both of them so when the chance to read this one came up, I obviously had to take it and I'm glad I did because once again I enjoyed it.
This book is told from 2 POVs. Eden's chapters are told in the present where she has been locked up in a mental hospital for murdering her husband. Then there's Layla's chapters which are in the past from where her and Eden first meet and then they catch up to the present.
I was immediately drawn into the story, but it wasn't an on the edge of my seat kind of story. I loved that we got Eden's POV because reading her chapters will make you feel like you're going crazy like she feels. I felt so bad for her throughout the whole book but there are times where she came off very manipulative and I didn't really care for that especially in the end. I'm not sure how I feel about how things ended for her.
I will say I was able to guess at somethings but even still there were some aspects of what I guessed that I didn't see coming. Despite kind of knowing where things were going it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the book.
This ends in a way where there is potential for another book, and I will totally read that if the author decides to write it. I actually hope she does because I would like to know what happens now.
I'm being very vague because I don't want to spoil anything but overall, this was another enjoyable read from Eva and I look forward to her next book. I definitely recommend this if you're into psychological thrillers.
In If She Only Knew, Eden and Layla meet at a support group for women who are having trouble conceiving. They quickly become friends.
When Eden becomes pregnant, Layla is there for her every step of the way, especially since Eden’s husband is a tool.
When Eden wakes to find a bloody mess and a dead husband, she is arrested for murder. She ends up at a psychiatric hospital due to her bipolar disorder.
The story then works around her life there and what is happening with her family members and Layla. What happened to her baby during this twisty ride?
My Thoughts
Holy crow, do I love a twisty psychological thriller involving “good people who do bad things for complicated reasons” as Eva states in the author summary in the back of the book.
If Only She Knew is a thinker. Who did what? Who is good? Who is bad? Is this actually happening or is it a psychotic episode? Is she a good friend or a back stabber?
My mind was spinning as I crammed ¾ of the book into my brain today. I had to finish it for my book tour date tomorrow, and I couldn’t put it down.
This book takes you on a crazy ride, throws a wrench into the story every so often, and even knocks your socks off at points. Gosh darn, it is a good one! The only thing I was iffy about was the ending. I am guessing there will be another book though, and I am good with that.
If psychological thrillers are your thing, you must get a hold of this one. It is a doozy!
Thank you to R&R Book Tours, the author, and the publisher for providing this book for me to read and review.
I’m a big fan of Eva Mackenzie. She is one of the authors I don’t hesitate to pick up when I see a new book from her. She never disappoints and If She Only Knew might be my favorite read from her so far! This deserves more than five stars!
First of all, can we talk about this cover. I’m a huge lover of color pops so the red on the black and white has me obsessed. I know you want to know about the words inside, but sometimes covers deserve a highlight.
Starting with a bang, this book keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. As per usual with Eva Mackenzie’s books, I read this in one sitting. So, with that knowledge, I suggest starting this one before bedtime or you’ll lose sleep (like I did…no regrets!)
This story is told from Eden and Layla’s perspectives. I enjoyed figuring out how the stories interconnected. I held my breath a lot during this read. I truly love it when a book gets my heart racing and this one did.
Gripping and addicting, I highly recommend If She Only Knew!!
Thank you to R&R Book Tours for the free review copy and tour invite. All opinions are my own and unbiased.
I really enjoyed this book, kept me trying to figure out who was the “bad guys”. The right number of characters and kept me wanting to continue. Thought the ending was excellent, not the type you know ahead of reading.
I could not put this book down & read it all in one sitting. So many unforseen twists & jaw dropping reveals. Easily the best book I've read in a long time or quite possibly have ever read. Don't miss out on this must read book!

This psychological thriller delves into the emotional topics of fertility and Post-Partum Depression. Eden’s journey to motherhood is heartbreaking but finally happens. Then her son is ripped away when her husband is murdered and she’s committed to a psychiatric facility. Her son is placed with her BF—Layla—and Eden’s agony begins again, as she fights to get her mental issues under control and reunite with her son.
The exotic cover grabs your attention and the first chapter sucks you in! The brilliant conclusion leaves you satisfied. Almost, anyway!
Is She Only Knew is set in a psychiatric hospital. The story begins with blood on Eden Wyatt’s hands and legs. Later she is convicted of murder, yet she has no recollection of murdering her husband. She was sentenced to a psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. For the next forty-five days Eden focuses on getting better so she can return home to baby Finn.
The story is told from Layla and Eden’s points of view. Layla is a friend she met in group therapy. The story goes into a countdown for Eden’s review date.
If She Only Knew is a story about the friendship between Layla and Eden. The primary focus is about Eden working to get better so she can get back to her son Finn.
There were some really great scenes and some okay scenes. The story consumed me during those great scenes. Although, they were few and far between. Instead of a love triangle the reader gets a manipulation triangle between three women. One more evil than the other. I didn’t love this story nor hate it. I appreciated its unique and original content. However, the delivery of this story wasn’t very entertaining. I found the inner workings inside the hospital to be very tedious and boring. I’m sure these scenes were meant for entertainment purposes. I found I would rather read scenes about Layla’s character, they were more forthcoming. The trope for this story was trying to prove that Eden was unstable. Eden already has a history with instability, but after giving birth to Finn she’s found unfit. The tactic Eva MacKenzie used in If She Only Knew was creative, yet still predictable. Unfortunately, the ending leaves readers unsettled and unsatisfied. No closure given with that ending which leads me to believe a second story is in the making.
This one starts out with a bang, as Eden is Wyatt is in a daze, roaming around a grocery store and covered in blood. She apparently has just murdered her husband after suffering from a manic bipolar episode after the birth of their son, Finn, but has no recollection of doing so. She then ends up being arrested but found to be not guilty by reason of insanity. She is then sentenced to time in a psychiatric hospital. It is during this time that she is determined to convince everyone that she is okay and to release her so she can be reunited with her son, who is staying with her friend, Layla.
Eden met Layla previously during group therapy sessions, and she considers her to be a great friend, enough to where she trusts her to take care of her son Finn. Is Layla really as good as a friend as Eden thinks she is? Who really is Layla, and what secrets is she hiding?
This story is told from alternating POV of Eden during present time, and Layla’s POV is told from the past when her and Eden first met in their group therapy sessions up through present time. I really enjoy Mackenzie’s writing and that this one centered around a woman suffering from mental health issues and is in a psychiatric ward, I think that psychiatric hospital settings make for such great reads! I also enjoyed the short chapters, and the characters which were so flawed and disturbed it made me dislike them, but I think that was the point.
I will say that this was a pretty predictable read, and didn’t really leave me questioning and guessing. I felt like the ending was left with somewhat of a cliffhanger, maybe leading up to a sequel?
Overall, this was a twisty psychological thriller that was an enjoyable read!
If She Only Knew by Eva MacKenzie is a thrill ride racing right out full speed ahead and doesn’t stop to give you a moment to catch your breath. Eden was fascinating to follow, and I found her to have many layers to her that were more in depth than what I was expecting. I came into this expecting a story about a woman trying to prove her innocence but what I found was a complex woman who is broken, mentally unstable, and suffering from so much trauma. On the surface we see a woman in a mental institute trying to show she is sane enough to be released while enduring the creepy claustrophobia around her along with everything going on inside her own mind. She is not only dealing with her external struggles but also the internal ones as well. You can see why I said this is far more complex than I thought it would be and we are only scratching the surface. I don’t want to go into the storyline too much to keep us out of spoiler territory so I will stop there but I wanted to give you a taste of the dynamic of this book. It has so much going on that it can be dizzying at times and a bit overwhelming. I had to step away from the story to ground myself and then would dive back into it. Overall, I enjoyed the unsettling and fantastical elements this story threw my way. It was over the top at times, but I think that is what I enjoyed most about it because it was not what I expected so it came it fresh and interesting. I will say I felt the ending was rushed and should have been carried out better, but I did not have too many criticisms and would recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good thriller that keeps you guessing.
If She Only Knew was my first read by Eva Mackenzie, but after that ride, it won’t be my last! This is a great domestic thriller that kept me turning the pages way too late into the night (or, rather, early into the morning). Talk about unreliable narrators -- both Eden, our MC, and Layla, her best friend, meet that definition to a T. You don’t know who to believe, and you certainly don’t know who--if anyone--you should root for. Not to mention both of those things changed multiple times while reading. I thought I had things figured out by like page 6...but boy was I wrong, ha! That’s what I get for being too jaded by reading lots of thrillers, I guess. There were twists and turns I definitely wasn’t expecting here, and I *definitely* wasn’t expecting that ending!
As with any thriller, I can’t say much without spoilers, so this will be a short and sweet review, but I will close by imploring you to pick this one up. Seriously, if you’re a fan of domestic thrillers, I really don’t think you can go wrong with this one. If you read it, let me know what you think!
Rating: 4 stars!
**Disclosure: I received a copy from the author for purposes of this blog tour. This review is voluntary on my part and reflects my honest rating and review of the book.
This book was a wild ride!! It totally had me creeped out! We have eden who murder her husband after the birth of her baby, she has suffered a manic bi polar attack and got not guilty by Insanity and now is in a hospital type building where she is getting treated before her hearing. Her baby Finn has been left with best friend Layla who she meet at a support group for women who can’t have children. And eden thinks that Finn is best left with Layla till she gets out, or so she thinks. Than we get Layla POV that’s before the incident and is Layla a really good friend to Eden? Is Layla a good person at all? These are all questions I asked my self why reading this. The author did a great job of keeping you guessing who was the villain of this story. The reason it loses a star is because the ending! I would of wanted more of that story line in the book, Instead of the relationship we get of eden and the people she meets in the hospital. I just felt like it would of been better to learn that, but this thriller wasn’t definitely fast paced and kept you guessing the whole time and the ending left me with a 😲😲 face! Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book for review!
She's got a killer secret... Eden Wyatt knows three things to be true: She's a mother. She's a survivor. She's a killer. After murdering her husband, she's committed to a hospital for the criminally insane. She has forty-five days to convince them she's no longer a danger to others. But soon, evidence begins to surface suggesting Eden is spiraling out of control again. Only this time, her rage has a new target. Can she accept what she's done when she uncovers the truth built on lies? Or will the facts finally push her over the edge?
What a read this was! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously. Can't wait to read what the author brings out next. Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.

The first few chapters of this book really pulled me in, and I found it to be a reminder of Alex Michaelides’ The Silent Patient. I loved the dual POV from Eden and Layla, as well as the character development, but I did find the ending to be a bit easy to figure out. Nonetheless it was a fun read and I thank the author for a copy of her novel in exchange for an honest review.
This story starts out on a very high note. One that got my attention. Yet, it seemed to than slow down a lot. All the pieces of the puzzle surrounding Eden were long and drug out. Which to a point I would not have minded if it was not for the fact that I did not feel a strong emotional connection to Eden.
I mean I felt for Eden but did not really feel like she was fighting for herself. She seemed to be persuaded by Layla and others. Which sadly does happen to people with mental health issues. Where Layla is concerned, I did not like her. There was something about her that just rubbed me the wrong way.
Although, I did see where the story was going and how it would end, so it was not really a surprise to me. Yet, I did keep reading until the end. Overall, I thought this was a fine book. However, I would try another book by this author again.
I could not put this book down! Eden just had a baby and is charged with murdering her husband, but is found not guilty by reason of insanity. She's spent 9 months in jail before being committed to Middle State Psychiatric Hospital in Virginia. She has 45 days before her next evaluation. Will she remain at Middle State or be released and be able to see her son, Finn? This book takes the reader on her 45 day stay and some other psychiatric patients Eden comes in contact with. This book was captivating and twisty. Eva MacKenzie really drew me in with her creepy descriptions of the mental hospital. This book also has alternating POVs--Eden and her friend, Layla, that she met before her hospitalization. It was hard for me to decipher who was telling the truth. And the end left me wanting more!!
This thriller captured me from the very first chapter, when Eden walks into a grocery store, covered in blood, and confesses to a murder.
Focusing on the very real and very scary aftermath of postpartum psychosis, this is a story that is also a nightmare come to life for any parent. The dual POV kept things moving but also piecemeal until it all came together in the end…and then the very last page put hope out there that the final loose end might get wrapped up.
I found the story to be gripping, and somewhat fantastical. I wish a little more detail had been given to discovering Layla’s background as the book progressed…the revelations about her toward the end were both shocking and glossed over fairly quickly.
Overall, solid thriller with a lot of moving parts.
Read if you like: psychological killers, twisted friendships, good lawyers, and great private investigators.
This book started off a little slow for me, but then it was all thrilling twists and turns until the very last page.
Eva MacKenzie has a fantastic writing style. Her character’s in this story are so unapologetically flawed, and disturbed, that you just can’t stop reading.
The chapters were nice and short, and the storyline, even though it was told through two characters and during different timelines in certain chapters, flowed nicely.
I’m all for this book, and thought it was a well done Psychological thriller, with some edgy twists. MacKenzie makes my list of Author’s I want to read more of!
Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5
This book has a Pub date of June 23rd, be sure to check it out!
This is a great book for fans of Alex Michaelides!
Eden Wyatt only knows 3 things to be true: • she’s a mother • she’s a survivor • she’s a killer
After having a psychotic break and murdering her husband, Eden is battling with her demons and trying to decipher fiction from truth.
This book took awhile to get into and the ending was predictable, although we are left on a cliffhanger presumably awaiting a sequel… I would think.
The characters are well written and had me battling whether I would side with Eden or Layla. It is told through both POV so you can gather a great sense of their frame of mind and inner workings.
I did however find the last few pages of the book did rush through everything.
If you're a fan of psychological fiction that gets its hooks in you early and doesn't let go, then you've found the book that's going to top your TBR pile. The imagery is very vivid, and you can hear and feel and see each moment of this story. Following Eden's journey from when we first meet her, covered in blood, at a supermarket through her stay at a hospital for the criminally insane was absolutely fascinating. Layla was a great character, and I loved learning her story too - with Eden's being more focused on the present, and Layla's in the past until they inevitably collide. Highly recommend.
This book is told from Eden and her friend Layla's, point of view. Eden is a convicted killer out to prove that she is no longer criminally insane, in order to get back home to her newborn baby, Finn.
This story will throw you in a loop!! The intense world building is descriptively lyrical and I love the way Eva has written this story!
The suspense is wonderful and it'll keep you guessing who the good guy is vs, who the bad guy is. The way Eva describes the asylum gave me goosebumps. She has done an incredible job with this book. If you enjoy physiological thrillers, this book is definitely one you should add to your tbr!!!
Thank you kindly to NetGalley and Craven Ink Press for the eARC (although, I admit it: I’m quite late to the party here!🥴)
𝑰𝒇 𝑺𝒉𝒆 𝑶𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝑲𝒏𝒆𝒘 is captivating, addicting, and creepy! I was hooked from the first page and enjoyed this twisty psychological thriller from Ms. Mackenzie.
#netgalley #ifsheonlyknew I was totally engrossed in this book which main setting is a psychiatric hospital. It is a page turning physcological thriller with a fantastic twist. It is super creepy and I loved the writing style. I will definitely be on the lookout for more to read by this author. Thank you netgalley and craven ink press for this ARC. This is my honest review 5/5 stars
Overly long and boring with way too much padding. It plays out exactly as you'd think....(was it supposed to be a big surprise how Ben died??). I found the chapters in the hospital very boring and the Layla character's motive way to obvious. I've read stories where the baddie is presented upfront and they work because we don't know their motivations but here it's all openly presented.
Oh my gosh! This book was crazy! I read it in one day! I had a feeling I knew what was about to happen, but I hoped I was wrong and it just kept surprise me. I couldn't put it down! Such a freaking good thriller.
Before reading this book, I saw a review that said this could be a lifetime movie. I totally agree! It was a decent storyline but it would totally make a perfect movie for lifetime!
Well, I know many of you are always looking for one of those true psychological thrillers, and today, I am able to assure you that you have found one with If She Only Knew!
I love when an author is able to create characters who are all suspicious. Eva MacKenzie had me questioning everyone who came into play in this story! We have Eden who you just met in the synopsis; her husband, Ben; her best friend, Layla; her sister-in-law, Olivia; her first doctor, Dr. Jones; her second doctor, Dr. Lucas; and that doesn’t even include all of the other patients at the clinic and so many others! Now, even with all of these characters, I never found myself trying to keep track of everyone. MacKenzie did wonders with the character developments, which helped me easily keep track of everyone!
The only thing that I really didn’t think was well thought out was the very end of the story. I do not want to give any spoilers, so I will just say that I do feel like a mastermind criminal would be smarter than what the very last two words of the book gave away.
This was such a page turner, and as I said, I think you all of you psychological thriller searchers will be happy with this one!! Thank you to R & R Book Tours and Eva MacKenzie for this #gifted review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily!
I am in love with all psychological thrillers. At this point, I should just invest all of my time into reading them because they are always worth it! If She Only Knew is no different, and once again I am left applauding the author for their talented writing.
If you need a reason or a sign to read this book, this is it. I am yelling at you to give this one a go if you love thrillers! This novel put me in the mood for the spooky season and it will do the same for you. 😱
Eden Wyatt is a character that you will not soon forget. She must be one of the most interesting characters in a thriller book that I have read about in a while!
