I received a free copy of this title to read and review for Wicked Reads

HOUSE OF CURSES is the third installment in the Royal Houses series. I strongly recommend against reading as a standalone or out of series order. The entire series is told from Kerrigan's POV. There are also mentions of a previous series, Ascension, which I somehow completely overlooked and will remedy that shortly. Honestly, I thought I had read it but GR says my recollection isn't true.

Let me preface this review by stating how the HOUSE OF CURSES ends on the mother of all cliffhangers, with Kerrigan left devastated. Had I not read this for review, I would have waited to read this novel once I had both books in my greedy little hands. I'm not the most patient of readers.

The first thought that popped into my head when I started on the first page was to wonder if I should have reread House of Shadows or at least hunted down my review for a refresher, as I had digested hundreds upon hundreds of books since I was immersed in this series.

KA Linde does an amazing job of coaxing the reader into remembering events in the previous novels without weighing down the pacing with info-dumps. Mad props to Linde for flawlessly pinging my memory.

With Ford MIA, Kerrigan is plunged into fearing for her soulmate's safety as well as her own. There is no way out of her betrothal with March. By day, Kerrigan is plagued with social engagements with her fiance, and by night, she awakens in a panic to nightmares of what lies ahead in the future.

With the help of her nearest and dearest, as she works to regain the trust and adoration she once had for the father who abandoned her for her own good, as she strengthens her knowledge of her own abilities, as she runs for a seat in the Society, Kerrigan's plate is overloaded. But all she can think about is Ford, whether he is safe or if he is ever coming back to her. All the while, she is trying to take down the Red Masks.

HOUSE OF CURSES reveals how the fairytales are real. Adventurous treks through impassable cold landscapes, with a soulmate at her side, attempting to reach the witch's cottage. Political intrigue plaguing their world, forming factions of fae, human, and half-human/half-fae. As well as entering the spirit plane to commune with a being from another world altogether. Kerrigan's life and those she loves hinges in the balance of whether or not they can stop the Red Masks from decimating life as they know it. The novel packs a fast-paced punch.

The reason I couldn't give 5 stars versus 4 is simply a matter of taste. I'm not a fan of reading passages from the villains of the tale. Not only are the passages short, therefore I have zero emotional investment in the character, I find they spoil the pacing and delivery of information. I'm locked into Kerrigan, as I have for 3 books- I wish to learn beside her as I have for the entire journey. The reader knowing who the villains are while watching the heroine flounder is not something I find enjoyable nor intriguing. The switch in narration jars me from the story, gets me out of Kerrigan's head, to the point I tend to skip these passages, no matter the author or the series. Added with the fact that there were multiple villains, as well as from her friend's POV.

Highly recommend this novel and series to fans of the author, as well as those who enjoy epic fantasy, fantasy, dragons, and fae. What I wouldn't do to get my greedy hands on the next installment, mind spinning as I have theories to a few revelations revealed and wish to be proven right. Since I've discovered my memory is faulty, I will be diving into Ascension soon.

Whoa. This one was a rollercoaster!

House of Curses is the third book in K.A. Linde’s Royal Houses series. First of all, the second book in the series was released a year ago, so I’m thankful that Linde managed to insert a few recaps of certain events very cleverly at the beginning of this book. Secondly, I couldn’t put my Kindle down as soon as I started reading it.

At the start of the book, Kerrigan and Fordham are dealing separately with different things in their lives. Fordham is trying to break his curse after being forced to leave Kerrigan behind to protect her, while Kerrigan is struggling with an unwanted wedding, dealing with her father and their house, and her new position in the Society. However, as if all of that wasn’t enough, she’s also being pushed into an unexpected election.

The pacing of this book was insane. A lot was unpacked, everything was happening with EVERYONE, and I was glued to my Kindle. I love all of the characters, so I wanted to read from everyone’s POV at all times. However, this is my personal preference. I tend to enjoy multi-POV books. However, because of all the stuff happening with Kerrigan, and since Fordham was MIA for 50% of the book (but very much present in Kerrigan’s thoughts, dreams, and visions), the book was better balanced in following different events and POVs during the first half. In the second half, we didn’t get much time to follow what was going on with Clover, Hadrian, and Darby, for example. Even though we had a few other POVs, following the same pattern of the first part, the pacing increased even more and some of the characters didn’t pop up as much as I wished. I wanted more Dozan and scenes in the Waster! I wouldn’t mind if we had gotten more pages to explore the secondary characters and locations.

There were a few details that I didn’t enjoy as much as I wanted. The identity of the main villain was a little obvious from a certain point, I wish it had kept the suspense going a little longer. I also didn’t enjoy a certain detail regarding the romance between Kerrigan and Fordham (it’s a Fae detail… if you know, you know). I don’t think it was necessary at all. And this book features a trope I dislike in fantasy books, one that was used a lot in YA Fantasy. I’m not going to disclose it because it’s a spoiler. However, it didn’t bother me as much because this is not the final book in the series. I’m pretty sure that Linde is going to turn it on its head. *Fingers crossed*

As I said before, the cast of characters is very strong in this series. I won’t say I loved all the POVs because I honestly didn’t care about Harbor (Fordham’s cousin). However, I really enjoyed Isa, a villain, and Wynter, Fordham’s sister, POVs. Kerrigan was, once again, a great character to follow. She had a lot going on: bonding with her father, learning more about her spirit magic while practicing, studying magical artifacts, enduring March and the boatload of social mandatory events, dealing with the discrimination and the Red Masks, the anti-human and anti-half fae terrorist organization, etc. The political intrigue was at its peak in this installment of the series.

I also enjoyed the mystery surrounding Kerrigan’s mother. I’m very intrigued about it! And don’t even get me started about the ending! The cliffhanger was brutal! Can’t wait to read the next one!

Overall, I had a lot of fun reading House of Curses. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Fae fantasy romance, dragons, magic, political intrigue, fast-paced action, and interesting fantasy worlds.

From the "I don't read fantasy girl" - I give this book 5 BLUSHES!
This series has had me from the get-go -Kerrigan is a heroine you will LOVE!
House of Curses is book three in the series, and you MUST read the first two books before diving in. As with most fantasy books, it's long, and so many parts are moving at once, but KA Linde is a fantastic writer who shines while writing fantasy. I read the book two over a year ago, and while listening (I did the audible version of this book), she can write a book with small reminders within the next book to jog your memory as to what happened in the previous books.

This book is written descriptively, bringing me into the story; I can see the dragons flying, the black silk of Fordham's robe, and the beautiful red locks that Kerrigan wears. I could see this series as a mini-series on TV!!
Book 4 is coming in a few weeks, and I can't wait.
The narrator is fantastic, and she brings the story to life!

This series just gets better and better, so much happened in this one we could not put it down. Kerrigan's intuition and canniness and her ability to adapt to any situation is amazing she is an awesome fighter and has one of the biggest hearts ever just look what she did for the twins that say it all about whom the Princess Kerrigan of the House of Cruse really is.

The intensity of this story multiples for both Fordham and Kerrigan, and the stakes are bigger than ever for both of them. This time around, Kerrigan is clearly discovering who her enemies are with the help of those you least expect. These demons and haters keep trying to put her down, and she keeps getting back up to fight another day.

So much happened in this story to keep you glued to the pages and more secrets coming to light, and has Kerrigan finally found the answer to her prayers where March is concerned ? Let's just say that what she does to protect herself will blow your mind.

As well as Kerrigan rising through the ranks to help her people, Fordham has been on a mission himself to break the curse but, what, has Kerrigan always said they were better as a team than on their own? We have been rooting for this couple from day one, and we hope they both will get the Happily Ever After they both deserve.

So many secrets and suspense and intrigue with this one, and we loved that Kerrigan is finally getting some answers she has been looking for. Dozan never ceases to amaze us. Kerrigan has the best friends a girl could ask for who always have her back. Just loved this one more than U can say, but, Kerrigan story is not over...

Scales! What An Ending!!

I’m going to need a minute…ok…well here I was at the beginning of the month thinking, “Finally! The ending to the Royal Houses series will be out this month and Kerrigan & Fordham will get their Happily Ever After!”.

But, NO! No, now we have to wait an entire year for House of Gods!

And will there be a HEA?! I have no clue after that ending! I must say I’m a bit traumatized. I didn’t think Ms. Linde could be so wicked! I feel betrayed and a little fearful of what’s to come.

But, Good Lord willing, I’ll be here next October waiting excitedly for the conclusion!

Ending aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this installment with Kerrigan’s continued training with The Society and her new spirit plane mentor. Her continued investigation into the Red Masks. And I especially loved the sexy times with her & Fordham that were so hot that I don’t feel this series can be classified as YA anymore.

It was quite an amazing journey and I don’t want to give too much away so I’ll just say this series is still one of my very favorites and I’ll wait an entire year with bated breath to see how it all plays out!

HOLY HELL! House of Curses certainly took me on a magical ride that kept my heart rate up cover to cover. There's so much goodness set in the colorful tapestry of the Royal Houses Seres, and it just so happens that I'm all about dragons these days (House of the Dragon probably has something to do with that LOL). On top of the dragons there's a ton of action, adventure, danger, thrills, and just plain old fun. The twists are coming in hot as Kerrigan is officially a member of the Society. However, Ford's disappearance has left a black cloud over her head despite other things going well, but there's more drama & danger on the horizon with a terrorist organization gaining ground, and an election. Despite this book packing quite the exciting punch, there's still more to come as it leads to another brutal cliffhanger ending that really has done my head in, and I can assure you, the wait on the next book will be too long! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

For some reason I thought this was a trophy, imagine my surprise at the end even if wasn't! The book took a while to pick up; the pacing was too slow for my liking. However, once we hit the Climax, man did things move wicked fast.
We finally figure out who the father of the red masks is, albeit it's not much of a surprise by the end. Linde makes it blatantly obvious with her clues.

Yssa, gets a bit humanized in book 3, and I did like that. She's not just the cold blooded assassin. Well, she is that, but there is more to her story.

I was disappointed at the was Clover, Darbie, and Hadrian have been relegated to just a love story. Though I do have hope that Clover is going to do so much more in book 4.

On a final note, we see some beloved character deaths by the end, so prepare your heart folks.

What a thrill to be reunited again with Kerrigan, Ford, their dragons, and the whole gang of characters! This new sequel is yet again filled with action and feelings (oh, the feelings) and I loved every bit of it (most honorable mention to the cursed couple, obviously, but also to Kerrigan and Tieran’s quick-witted insolence). I’m still having a hard time wrapping my head around the face behind the Father and all that happened during that final, heart-stopping episode at the arena, but while K.A. Linde once again left us with a jarring cliffhanger, I’m super excited that there’s more to come!

Now we’re just cursed to wait for another year. No biggie. Thanks to K.A. Linde for sending me this ahead of pub date, I couldn’t read fast enough, and I had a blast!

I feel like I’m in state of shock. Like I’ve been on a rollercoaster ride the whole time I’ve been reading and I just got off. My heart’s pounding, I’m a little shaken, and I might be sweating a bit. K.A Linde has crafted a book filled to the brim with magic, adventure, danger and romance. And I loved every page of it. This series is quickly become a favorite of mine and I can’t wait for the next installment! I need to know what happens to Kerrigan, Ford, and the rest of the crew after that massive cliffhanger. I don’t know how I’m going to wait a whole year for the next book!!

WHAT AN ENDING!

This was another truly wonderful rollercoaster ride of a book and a worthy follow up to the House of Shadows. No middle slump here. I truly enjoyed watching the events play out and all the (expected) and unexpected twists and turns. Linde has done something really special here. She has crafted a really wonderful cast of characters that I truly enjoy reading about. Not just Kerrigan and Ford, but Clover, Darby and Hadrian (and on and on). I love the added chapters from the other's perspectives too. I am eagerly awaiting the next part of all of their stories and cannot wait to see where Linde takes us next!

It is a shame there is so much regurgitation of information. I LOVE the story line and I love the characters even more, but it drives me crazy to reread information I have already read. Without all the regurgitation I would have given it 4 to 4.5 stars.

I can’t believe I’m giving the third book in a series a higher rating than the first two but good lord! This book absolutely ripped my heart out & gave it a good stamp for good measure!

So much happened! Where do I even begin!

We follow Kerrigan through her getting kicked out of the society training, but also finally finding someone that can train her on her spirit magic in the spirit realm. In which she learns of a way to tether herself to her dragon with a spirit bond type thing… it’s not the same as a real bond but she made it two way so her and her dragon can communicate at all times. We know the whole way through that master bastion is the leader of the red masks but Kerrigan has no idea.

He continues to train them all on how to combat magical artifacts & is admitted back into the society for her efforts in saving the city from the red masks and she’s voted in as a full society member. She’s also reconciled with her father and has now been made into the head of the Brianican household. So his part of the curse has lifted and the land can thrive once again.

Ford is away for much of the beginning of the book & we return to him when Kerrigan has a vision that he’s going to die so she goes to save him. They travel up the mountain & go through three temptation trials to get to see the mother of the fae (I really enjoyed that part, it reminded me of gluttony in the kingdom of the wicked series).

Ford fails to break his curse because it has to be done with a selfless act, so Kerrigan steps forward & refuses to leave without her helping ford and refuses her gifts as all she wants is to help him. And so their curse breaks and they can finally be together.

We also learn that Ford’s cousins are working with the red masks to infiltrate Kerrigans inner circle, who he eventually ends up getting one of them killed because she claims to know what the leader of the red masks looks like to Master Bastion even though she doesn’t 😬 I thought their relationship was super creepy anyways! Less like brother and sister and more like lovers!

Darcy finally gives in & she’s now with Clover and Helion is also with Clover … and they all seem to be pretty happy! And Ford bought him and Kerrigan a house & they found out their each others mate 🥹

But the ending… SCALES! The ending!!

It ends with Kerrigan winning her seat as a society member. And master Bastion being voted in as leader of the whole society 🤯 he then reveals himself as leader of the red masks and all hell breaks loose!! He kills Viviana for working against him with Kerrigan in secret. His own daughter!

Ford is stabbed in the back & is loosing a lot of blood. Bastion captured Kerrigan and has taken the ring off her and now wears it himself (although his left arm was chopped off & im not sure if that arm had the ring on or not). He strips Kerrigan of her magic, she looses her mating bond, her dragon bond and all of her elemental and spirit magic 😭 she just feels empty and wants to die with her friends.

They try to kill Kerrigans dad & he’s paralysed from the waist down 😭 he tells her to get out of the city and go to the portals, she’s a descendant of he who reins and she needs to go and find her mother to get help.

I think in the next one her mother will turn out to be a god, and he who reins will be a god of some sort & they’ll help Kerrigan to get her powers back & she’ll be stronger than ever! She’ll have to have one final battle with Bastion to regain control of the city & the society! I’ve got high hopes for this last book!!

✨𝓗𝓸𝓾𝓼𝓮 𝓸𝓯 𝓒𝓾𝓻𝓼𝓮𝓼 – 𝓡𝓸𝔂𝓪𝓵 𝓗𝓸𝓾𝓼𝓮𝓼 𝓢𝓮𝓻𝓲𝓮𝓼 #3 - 𝓡𝓮𝓿𝓲𝓮𝔀✨

Author: K.A. Linde

Couple: Kerrigan Argon & Fordham Ollivier

Tropes: dragons, fantasy romance, PNR, morally grey MMC, rebel FMC, fae/dragon/magic, shadow powers, slow burn, enemy to friends

Review: Things heat up in this book and Kerrigan finally steps into her role as a rebellion leader. K.A. Linde delivers a masterpiece in this book and opens the  doors for a new uprising as Kerrigan faces off with the Red Coats in an epic battle that shakes the realm.

Kerrigan embraces her half-fae heritage fully in this book and begins to actually learn all of her powers. I loved seeing her begin to harden herself against all the forces trying to cull her strength and found her tenacity a huge draw in. This book also expands on her bond with Ford and I adored how he stood valiantly by Kerrigan’s side and made sure to always bring her up instead of tear her down. One area I found intriguing  in this book was the knowledge of finally learning what Kerrigan’s magic is. The soul magic she has and the trainer she finds to teach her drops; so many hints for what is to come that it left me ion edge as she dives deeper into her magic.

This book also adds a few chapters from other’s POV. I found the added POVs to be crucial to the plot since they allow us to see the unrest and events occurring in the human lands and within the rebellion. Ford’s sister also makes a play in this book and I loved her character arc in this story and her attachment to the King of the Wastes. I am anxious to see how their relationship grows in the final few books.

This book is darker than previous books in this series and has a lot of war time scenes that I found exhilarating. K.A. Linde did a wonderful job with developing the tension between Kerrigan, the humans and the Red Coats. I was surprised with the secrets that unfolded surrounding who was in charge of the Red Coats and could not believe how much he was integrated within Kerrigan’s life. I also felt like the fighting and attacks developed at a natural pace and were built up appropriately.

K.A. Linde explores the mate bond between Kerrigan and Ford in this book as well. It is the first book where Kerrigan truly gives into her growing attraction and feelings to Ford. I enjoyed the added spice in this book and the love they each had. I only wish we could get some of Ford’s POV. The ending to this book shocked me and I could not believe the twist at the end and am looking forward to the next chapter of Kerrigan’s story!

Rating: 9/10, a huge cliffhanger for Kerrigan and Ford!

🔸Society with some who discriminate against humans & half-fae
🔸Different tribes/kingdoms
🔸Politics & political games
🔸Violent unwanted betrothal & threats
🔸Nomination for council election
🔸Becoming head of house

🔸FMC: unique, special one, powerful half-fae, different bond, secret powers, act-first think-later
🔸Cursed prince
🔸Hate
🔸Visions of the future
🔸Using & learning about secret spirit power
🔸Fighting against a secret group who wants half-fae & humans subjugated

❗Mentions: being abandoned by a parent and raised in the house of dragons, bigotry and discrimination, being hurt in riots (past), death, use and being addicted to illegal substances (not MCs)

notes:

🔸 weird romance
It seems like everyone and their mother wants to get into the FMCs pants and the MMC pushed her aside because of the curse, even if their connection is undeniable.

🔸 writing style
Not my favourite, a bit confusing at times.
Way too many, too abrupt changes.
It feels like some characters appear and then disappear for a while only (for their names) to come back out of nowhere and I don't remember who they are for a while.
Some plotlines begin only to be abandoned/forgotten for some time and then something happens in regard to that plotline just to add some drama and then it is abandoned again...

🔸Spirit classes
Quite ridiculous. She barely has a class once a month and learn everything on the first attempt???!

🔸too much
There are too many things going on at the same time, some of them not dealt with very well.
Just to name a few of the things going on at the same time:
-her magic sickness
-her secret visions
-the training for society
-the red masks group against half-fae and humans
-trying to find the father (leader of red masks)
-trying to break the MMC's curse
-dealing with a different dragon-bond
-learning about spirits
-trying to break off an unwanted betrothal
-becoming head of her house
-being a contestant for the council election
-spying
-her unknown heritage, her mother and the secrets her father kept from her
-helping the MMC's cousins keep hidden
-helping half-fae refugees
-being part of the movement Rights-For-All
-studying magical artifacts

🔸some predictable plot twists

For now I think I am goin to stop reading here, the story seems to be a bit scattered.

dissapointing

i loved the romance between Fordham and Ker, they're great together but other than that... this series had so much promise but this book just fell flat. killing off important characters willy nilly as a way to make readers emotional isn't a good strategy. there's other ways to stir emotions in stories without killing everyone off. this book ending in a terrible cliffhanger doesn't even make me want to read the next book in fear of it being even more dissapointing. it was lacking, i sadly wish things would've gone differently. the way kerrigan acted during battle was stupid at best, depressing at worst. I'm just disappointed tbh. why did all the action have to happen at the end of the book instead of the middle? sigh. knowing this is how things were gonna go I wouldn't even have started the series.

my bad for not checking beforehand if these books had a happy end or not. I had assumed since this series had good ratings it'd have good conclusions but I guess not. hopefully things wrap up well by book 5 but idk if I'll keep reading.

spoiler: i didn't like how wynter and rook are apparently a thing now either. honestly i would've shipped rook with anyone else but her. i'm supposed to be rooting for a woman who went and killed her own brother (Ford, one of my fav characters)??? idc if she was crazy, their pairing just seemed very forced and I didn't expect that. they make me internally cringe. other than that it's so sweet how Ford and Ker actually bonded, i hadn't read anything similar in other stories and it was so cute to see them happy and use their bond... before they both lost it and almost died. sigh.

There was a lot of repetitive information in this book. It dragged for awhile and started off with so many weak actions by Kerrigan, I almost put it down at 24%.

This book could have been 200-250 pages and still gave us what we needed to know for the next book. Kerrigan, the main character, went back and forth from strong to weak thinking. The plot was sometimes all over the place. It felt like the author was adding in storylines to check off as many "tropes" as possible. The first two books showed us Kerrigan taking her visions seriously and in this one, Kerrigan practically ignored two that she received. I assume that was so the cliffhanger could happen.

Kerrigan and Fordham are definitely stronger together and she makes better decisions when he is involved in some way, that is until the end of the book. I found it hard to believe with Fordham being a mate, king, and warrior, that he would blindly listen to Kerrigan and allow them to stay in a no win battle with Kerrigan without shadow jumping her out. That act went against the character building for Fordham. Kerrigan's actions once again cost more people their lives. She does not listen and spends as much time being a menace as she does a hero. I give it 2.5 stars for at least moving the story along once we got through so much filler.

I borrowed the series from my public library. There were several weeks wait for the 1st book. There was absolutely no wait for the rest of the books. I thought that was odd at the time and now I see why since I was among those who almost left it as DNF.

TITLE: House of Curses
GENRE: Fantasy Romance
AUTHOR: K. A. Linde
TROPE: Friends-to-Lovers, Slow Burn
TYPE: Series (Royal Houses Book 3)
POV: Dual POV
MY RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 / 5

What to Expect:
👿 Friends-to-Lovers
🤴 Dark Fae Prince
❤️ Slow Burn
🪄 Fae, Dragons & Magic

Kerrigan Has finally passed her dragon training and has become a full member of the society even though everything seems to be falling apart with Fordham's disappearance and her upcoming forced wedding to March. Tensions continue to build with the increasing momentum and threat of the Red Masks.

Kerrigan & Fordham's storyline kept me enraptured as all the plot twists unfolded. I have been enjoying this series, which is somewhat light on the spice while continuing to build up the angst and tension in each book. I can't wait for the next book in the series to be released in Oct after that cliffhanger. I am giving House of Curses a rating of 4.5 / 5 stars.

4.5 Stars 🌟

Sometimes, even though I try really hard not to, I will forget about a series that I am reading when there is a wait for the next book to come out in the series. This is what happened with this series. I completely tore through the first couple of books, then I'm guessing that the next book wasn't written (or maybe it wasn't out in audio) but regardless, it kind of slipped off my list. Then, the other day I saw something, I actually think it was the release of the 4th or 5th book (I'd have to go look, I don't remember off the top of my head) and I went back to Goodreads to see if I had read any books in this series. Imagine my surprise when I realized that not only had I definitely read the series, but I REALLY liked it.

So - yep....JUMPED back in with both feet :)

I was THRILLED to be back in the world with Kerrigan and Fordham, even if those two crazy kids are separated for most of the book. See, even though that is one of my pet peeves, I was still so happy to be back in that world that I was willing to make an exception.

In this book a lot is happening. I don't remember if we knew who the bad guy was before this book, but boy oh boy do we find out who it is now. Bummer dude.

Kerrigan is her wonderful self - full of confidence but missing Ford.

As much as I could go on - the 4th book is out so I've got another book to read. Gotta go.

Thoughts:
House of curses is book 3 in the series and it shows karrigan and her relationship with her dad a bit more. The story continues where it left off and the characters grow into their own a bit more. Karrigan is a strong female lead that doesn't depend heavily on being saved and it's refreshing to see in the fantasy genre.
There's also more scenes with her and her dragon learning to navigate their "bond" together too.
The ending to this one is wild and I jumped straight into the next!

3.5/5⭐️

With the amount of recap done in the first 1/4 to half of the book, I almost felt like I didn't need to read the first two. That being said, it was intriguing to learn more on Ker's backstory (even just vaguely) and meet the mother of all fae. Wondering if/how that will play into the next book's plot. I'm glad that Bastian has finally come out as leader of the Red Masks, and I can't wait for him to get what's coming to him (because he BETTER get what's coming to him!). March deserved worse, but I'm glad he's gone. I can't wait to see what happens now that Kerrigan and Ford are through the portal. Fingers crossed her mom can help them fix things...
