A quiet office worker embraces her new role as a cat mom when she begins sharing superfluous amounts of cat photos on the internet. Riko can't help it—her tuxedo cat is just too cute! Will her coworkers feel the same or will it add to their bewilderment about her? At home, Riko learns more about Musubi, from favorite toys such as a free grocery bag to their shared joy of video games. And Musubi himself learns a new trick—how to tell her when it's dinner time!
To determine whether this book is for you, I have designed a cunning set of questions:
1. Have you read volume 1 in this series?
Yes: Whatever you thought of volume 1, it applies here. If you loved it, you'll love this one, it's basically more of the same, and it does it well.
No: Please answer question 2
2. Please take a look at the cover. Does it make you go some version of "aww" and awakens within you the need to see more drawings like it?
Yes: Welcome! The cover tells you exactly what this book is. It's cats, cats, and more cats. And some silly gaming puns. But more importantly, it's cuteness, and it's cats.
No: Goodbye! This one is not for you, perhaps. Are you sure..? It's really cute..!
(Thanks to Dark Horse Books for providing me with an ARC through Edelweiss)
This was just as cute as the first volume—maybe even cuter! Musubi is so precious and I literally choked on my drink a little from how hard I laughed when he suddenly went into berserker mode! over the treat, especially because I buy my cats those same types of little tube treats and they go absolutely ape for them, too. 😂
Between Musubi's antics and Riko's constant comparisons of everything and everyone to video game components and characters, I seriously can NOT recommend this series enough to fellow cat-loving gamers!
Gentle slice-of-life cat humor is starting to overwhelm the hardcore gamer girl aspects. It's still pleasing enough to continue on, but I can see myself tiring of this series in the near future if it can't distinguish itself from all the other cat-lover books out there or even its own previous volume.
Riko's sister makes an appearance in this one, where she comes looking for easy social media likes in the form of cat photos, but gets sucked into an all-out battle against her sister. We also get to see the shopkeeper's house, when Riko learns some tips and tricks for taking care of her little Musubi. I especially loved the scene when Riko squares off against Musubi in some cat gaming fun--I, too, lost to my cat.
Still cute, still awesome, still relatable. The shopkeeper's menagerie and her giant cat run were incredible! Even though I know my two lazy cats would never use it, I sort of wish I had her setup in my house.
Riko and Musubi continue to get on like two peas on fire or something. Riko learns the joys of pet ownership, while Musubi learns the joys of being constantly underfoot and in the way. It’s very accurate, basically.
If you liked the first volume, you’re in for a treat, since that’s basically this volume. Normally this would be a downside, but as I write this, the cat in my profile picture is alternating between head butting me and cleaning my hands, so I am the wrong person to seek an objective assessment from here.
Nah, cats are going to cat and all of these cat manga I’ve sampled get a lot of mileage from their own visitations on feline behaviour. That scene with the bag is just deadly. This time out, Musubi becomes less naked and Riko’s sister comes to visit.
As a high strung influencer, said sister is more than a little grating until she learns to chill out, but as somebody who’s been a curmudgeon since 18, listening to the endless quest for likes is exhausting after a very short while (I will casually ignore the endorphin hit I get whenever somebody appreciates something I wrote).
Riko’s gaming translated to cat care conceit is still pretty underbaked, but Musubi charms away the rough edges. His behaviour is so spot-on that he really shores up any deficiencies in the story.
The one time this really melds together expertly comes during the chapter where Musubi goes crazy for a tube of Churu cat treats. Not only is Riko’s narration a solid addition, but Musubi’s actions completely echo those of my own cat.
It’s also benefited from those bonus chapters that show Musubi’s perspective on what just happened. His take on things, basic as it is, really gives it all just a bit more oomph. I think without those I’d be a little less inclined to enjoy this.
This knows what it’s doing and it hasn’t run out of steam in the premise or cute department. Expanding Riko’s world slightly has helped keep her from being quite as quirky (read: annoying), but she still has a little ways to go. Not that that should put you off if you like cats, mind.
this volume is just as cute, heartwarming, and wholesome as the first! riko starts making new friends, musubi is leveling up as he gets older, and we get to meet riko's sister this time! I already cant wait for volume three. so much here is so relatable if you own a cat yourself, whether or not you're a gamer! the art is adorable, and wataru nadatani pulls from their own cat-parent experience!
More delightfully done illustrations of a tuxedo kitty's antics with his (now more cat-savvy, but still frequently surprised) person, Riko--who has expanded her world to encompass not just gaming, but also now felines. Could Musubi even be the bridge to some human friendships for Riko, as well?
There is a lot of funny content that will have cat lovers nodding along and sometimes shaking our heads with exasperation. Such as the strange addiction-like power that liquified cat treats (I usually call them "those godforsaken tubes") have upon our feline friends.
3.5. Such an adorable continuation of book 1. The art style is so great and I can't wait to see how the story progresses in book 3

EN👇🏼 Mega chou ! notre héroïne monte en puissance grace à la PNJ de l'animalerie et elles évoluent ensemble (elle augmente ses chat-petences! hihi) je pense qu'elle va devenir complètement fauché en occupant de son chat 😹, mais sa vie est bien plus riche 😻 so cute& cozy! our heroine is skills-maxing her cat-petences thanks to NPC lady and they level up together 😹 I think she's going to be completely broke at the end, but her life will be richer thanks to her tuxedo cat 😺
Cat + Gamer by Wataru Nadatani Writing: A- Story: A- Characters: A Setting: A- Best Aspect: A fun second book in the series. Cats are the best. Worst Aspect: Not as much happened in this one compared to the first book. Recommend: Yes.
I love how cute this is and how the owner keeps comparing owning the cat to playing a video game, i.e. when the cat gets bigger, then he has leveled up lol. Very cure series!
Cat + Gamer follows Riko who is a mystery to all of her coworkers. She never works overtime and she never comes to hang out with them after work. But one day, she surprises them by adopting a kitten found in their companies parking lot. The truth is the Riko loves to go home and play video games after work. Now she has this kitten who she is determined to level up using the skills she has acquired from playing video games. I adore this manga so, so much. This is such a sweet and adorable manga that I am so glad that I picked up. I really connected with Riko pretty much right way from the first manga volume and this one made me love her as a character even more. I adore the relationship she has created with her kitten. She is really trying to her hardest to do the best for her new kitten. I cannot wait to continue this series when the manga volumes come out. I adore this manga so much and can see this becoming a favorite.
