Rendered beautifully in full color, this devotional journey through all the books of the Bible will set every day on the right course. You’ll grow in your knowledge and appreciation of the Scriptures with a fuller sense of God’s story and what wonderful plans he has for you.
Beloved pastor, poet, and author Eugene H. Peterson is your guide through the books of the Bible. You’ll lean in as he points out the sights and sounds, the personalities and controversies of an ancient world that God so loved. And you’ll lean back as you reflect with Eugene on how these ancient stories, these old, timeless insights into the world, and this compelling portrait of God speak directly to your everyday life.
Eugene H. Peterson was a pastor, scholar, author, and poet. For many years he was James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. He also served as founding pastor of Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland. He had written over thirty books, including Gold Medallion Book Award winner The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language a contemporary translation of the Bible. After retiring from full-time teaching, Eugene and his wife Jan lived in the Big Sky Country of rural Montana. He died in October 2018.
One of the most succinct yet deepening devotionals I’ve ever read. I will be going back to take even more notes, now that I’ve finished. It brings clarity to the Bible, in a way I believe God intended it to be read. If you’re wanting a devo that breaks down the motifs and context of each chapter in the Bible, consider this your holy grail. Could not recommend enough!
What wonders are contained in Scripture? In Symphony of Salvation, Eugene H. Peterson leads you on a 60-day devotional journey through the books of the Bible.
Soak in Scripture
As the translator of The Message and as a pastor for nearly 30 years, Peterson paints a vivid and warm portrait of the Bible. This book is a devotional, but it looks and reads like a glossy magazine and a small coffee-table book. With full-color photography and striking typography, this is one that will keep you coming back for more.
The theology and Biblical themes take priority in giving an overview of sacred Scripture. As the introduction mentions, they aren’t meant to be studied — but soaked in. The book is divided into five sections: (1) Anticipation (Gen-Deut), (2) Personal (Joshua - Esther), (3) Wisdom (Job - Malachi), (4) Reimagined (Matthew - Acts), and (5) Living (Romans - Revelation).
Behold Wondrous Things from God’s Word
What I enjoyed most were the “Verse-To-Remember” features for each book. They provide you a verse that you can meditate on throughout your day. You will get a glimpse of God, a window into the Biblical world, and a feel for how to live the Christian life.
Read this book as devotional material or as a casual way to creatively get more of God and his Word in your life. The Bible is a big book, but it is one that will bless you for a lifetime. Open the eyes of your heart and behold wondrous things from God’s Word.
I received a media copy of Symphony of Salvation and this is my honest review.
Disclaimer: I won this book in a contest. However, I like Peterson’s books very much and he has guided my ministry in positive ways.
This book is basically a 60 day summary of “The Message,” which is Peterson’s translation of the Bible. I enjoy reading the Message and I took 60 days (actually 78) to read the book the way it was intended. This book is a reflection of each book of the Bible an I’d recommend it as either a 60 day devotional or if someone wanted an over view of the Bible, it’s good for that.
There were some very good lines which I made public, especially in Job, and I appreciated Peterson’s fresh look.
This is a good devotional to start with if reading the Bible every day is new for you. It summarizes a valuable lesson each day from a book in the bible. I think this is helpful to read to figure out which book in the Bible you would like to study more in depth, since it gives you a glimpse into each one. It's easy to read, and I feel like the daily lesson is the right length.
Reading Peterson’s words never grows cold. With the flourish of his pen, the Bible comes to life! In Symphony of Salvation, Eugene Peterson gives us an overview of each of the books of the Bible, creating a tone that we can take with us when seeking to comprehend what the authors of the Bible were attempting to communicate. This book has been a delightful read in tandem with studying the word of God.
I have enjoyed reading through this 60 day devotional which is focused on each of the books of the Bible. It's a remarkable way to read throughout the bible in easier day to day steps.
*I received an advance e-copy of this book—all opinions expressed are my own.
It’s always refreshing to read Peterson’s words about the Bible. I would’ve given this 5 stars, but if you’ve read or used his Bible companion “The Invitation” this is an abbreviated version of that. The plus is the photography. Overall a good Bible-based devotional to get you through two months.
Peterson's Symphony of Salvation is a good devotional. It's incredibly aesthetic and goes into good detail on a number of books from the Bible. I found it both helpful and insightful.
This book has inspired me to rethink many of my biblical teachings. I am reading 1/3 of the book and enjoying the journey. THANK YOU for selecting me as a winner& keep writing more like this very moving! Karen Ruppel
I've been a fan of Eugene Peterson for decades, and this book does not disappoint. Presented as a sixty-day devotional, this book gives us a sort of "whirlwind" tour through the Bible, a book at a time. Obviously, some books are grouped together, as there are only sixty chapters and the Bible has sixty-six books.
The groupings are logical, taking in 1 and 2 Samuel in one day, as well as both Kings and both Chronicles on separate days. But then, Peterson, for some reason, gives us three days in the book of Job. I found that to be interesting. I do believe that my favorite of all of them was his chapter on Revelation. I have read a couple of his other books that are specifically about Revelation, and his take on it is refreshing and inspiring, as he believes the book to be mostly about worship, and that we spend way too much time focusing on all the apocalyptic stuff. The chapter in this book does not depart from that model, and is simply called, "Worship."
He uses texts from The Message, which is also logical, as he is the translator for that version of the Bible.
The book is super-inspiring to me, and I have an idea that I might read it again, later (maybe not this year), and actually read the Bible books as I read the chapters about them.
Eugene Peterson was a master wordsmith. There are times when I read a few of his sentences and just have to stop and shake my head and ponder what he just said. This happens quite a bit when I'm reading anything he has written.
Symphony of Salvation will definitely stay on my bookshelf to be read again. I recommend it for anyone interested in a synopsis or quick trip through the Bible.
