Paradise Hotel is anything but paradise. Lisa Walker comes to that conclusion the moment she arrives at the all-inclusive resort in Benidorm, Spain. Recovering from a painful break-up and the loss of her job and her flat, she was hoping the low-budget escape might do her good, yet she couldn’t have been more wrong. Stella Castillo, poolside manager at Paradise Hotel, is delighted to be back at work after a long lockdown. The guests are equally excited, celebrating life going back to normal. Apart from one woman, who her colleagues refer to as ‘Miss Grumpy’. When Stella’s colleague makes a faux pas and insults Lisa, Stella steps in to try and smooth over the situation. What starts out as a tentative friendship soon leads to more and as Stella begins to understand why Lisa is so unhappy, she unexpectedly finds herself falling head over heels with the beautiful Brit. Welcome To Paradise is the first book in The Resort Series by bestselling author Lise Gold.
Lise Gold is an author of lesbian romance. Her romantic attitude, enthusiasm for travel and love for feel good stories form the heartland of her writing. Born in London to a Norwegian mother and English father, and growing up between the UK, Norway, Zambia and the Netherlands, she feels at home pretty much everywhere and has an unending curiosity for new destinations. She goes by 'write what you know' and is often found in exotic locations doing research or getting inspired for her next novel.
Working as a designer for fifteen years and singing semi- professionally, Lise has always been a creative at heart. Her novels are the result of a quest for a new passion after resigning from her design job in 2018.
When not writing from her kitchen table, Lise can be found cooking, at the gym or singing her heart out somewhere, preferably country or blues. She lives in London with her dogs El Comandante and Bubba.
What’s in a name? Not necessarily the truth, obviously. Lockdown is over but in the meantime, Lisa lost her job and her girlfriend and can’t really afford to stay in London while she tries to turn her life around. Benidorm it is, then. Paradise Hotel may be all-inclusive but Heaven it is not. Dingy rooms, bland food, and staff who insist she has fun with all the other drunk British tourists when all Lisa wants is to be left alone. Enter Stella, the poolside manager…
So far, I’ve enjoyed every book I’ve read by Lise Gold a lot. I love travelling with her characters around the world – Spain this time – and I’m a big fan of her descriptions of sounds and colours and food. Her most recent books however didn’t carry me away as much as previous ones. I liked them but I stayed on the surface. With this one, though, I found again most of what I loved in Eastern Nights or The Scent of Rome.
I don’t remember complaining about too many intimate scenes before, and I’m not really complaining today either, but I did feel not all of them were necessary, especially in the first half. And there’s one that completely forced me out of my reading but as often when it comes to sex, it has more to do with this reader than with either the book or the way these scenes are written. I enjoy Lise Gold’s alter ego Madeleine Taylor‘s erotica books too much to have anything other than praise for most of them.
When the story begins, Lisa fits the grumpy character bill. Stella is too much of a professional to be all sunshine but the contrast between the two works well. It comes not so much from the differences in personality (even though these exist too) as from where both women are in life. Stella loves her job despite the state of decrepitude and all lockdown made more difficult, she loves her team, she loves her apartment and her cats. She’s a pretty happy person. Lisa, on the other hand, is trying to bounce back from a rather dark place. She’s not where she wants to be, either geographically speaking or in life. Which makes her character’s evolution more interesting and satisfying, even if Stella is a sweetheart.
Welcome to Paradise is the first book in the Resort Series. The author introduces a couple of side characters who could be mains in future books, but I’m not sure what her plans are. I’m curious to see where she takes us next…
I’ll end this review on a note that’s not specific to this book. I’m getting more and more frustrated with ratings. What’s a 4⭐️ for me might be a 2⭐️ or a 5⭐️ for someone else. And I might rate a book super high right after reading only to realise six months later that I don’t remember what it was about at all. The opposite is true too, I’ll give 4⭐️ to a book that’s still on my mind months later. Whereas I usually still agree with what I wrote even after a long time has passed.
What I’m saying is, read the words. Look at the stars because they’re pretty, but they won’t tell you much. The words however don’t lie. What the rating means is that this book is a 4⭐️ for me today. Just for me and maybe just today.
I received a copy from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
4.25 stars Another Lise Gold book, another trip to a wonderful destination in my imagination! Gold is unique in the lesfic world in that her books - often romances - are set in amazing locations around the world. Because she's a prolific traveler, she brings real insight into locations, culture, food and the people. As a reader, it feels like you can see it all very clearly! For many, this is as close as we will get to some of these destinations so the books are real treats - especially because she often takes us to smaller, out of the way places outside of the tourist areas. Set in Spain, this is more than a destination romance. Lisa Walker has lost her London flat, her job and her girlfriend and books a long-term stay at an inexpensive all-inclusive resort in Benidorm so she can give herself an affordable cushion of time to find a new job and get her life back on track. She's feeling near the end of her rope and just wants to be left alone. Poolside Manager Stella Castillo and her staff are grateful to be back to full time work after the pandemic shutdown. She can't help but notice the beautiful Londoner, but she's not allowed to fraternize with guests. But after one of Stella's employees is overheard insulting Lisa after work hours, Stella tries to smooth things over and the two develop a friendship. As the story continues, we learn who Lisa really is and how she not only discovers more about herself, but how much more there is to the area around her than what she initially realized. I was relieved and happy that narrator Jessica Jeffries was excellent at Spanish accents and pronunciation in general. This would have really fallen flat for me otherwise. In fact, her Spanish characters were the most satisfying of all the ones she performed. There were times I wondered what it would be like to read the physical book instead of audio and the great news is that the follow-up After Sunset was just released on ebook and paperback. I'll have to do that to compare the two experiences. Gold throws out the standard romance formula and just allows the story to play out. There's relatively little drama or angst. It's a feel-good, very sexy, uplifting story and I really enjoyed it. And if that didn't sell you, there are puppies!
Reading a book by Lise Gold is like going on a vacation. After the last year and a half, I think that's something we all could use. Welcome to Paradise is the first book in her new resort series, which I'm sure will be another excellent series for her.
Lisa Walker arrives in Benidorm, Spain after losing her job during the pandemic. That also lead to losing her flat and her girlfriend. Things couldn't suck more, until she checks into the Paradise Hotel, which couldn't be further from an accurate name. It's rundown and rather pathetic with even the food tasting like disappointment. But, it's all inclusive and she can afford it while she searches for jobs back in London. Lisa isn't exactly warm and fuzzy with the staff because she just wants to be left alone to wallow in her sadness.
Stella Castillo is the poolside manager at Paradise and is thrilled to be back at work after the lockdown. A night out at a co-worker's brothers restaurant leads her to talking to Lisa, after her overhears the nickname the staff has for her. Miss Grumpy is certainly that after hearing how the staff feel about her. Stella can't help but want to make Lisa smile as she can see the sadness on her face. The two women strike up a friendship and Lisa feels good having someone to talk to again. Lockdown has made her retreat inside herself but the charming pool manager brings her back to life.
As Lisa and Stella spend more time together Lisa develops a desire to know more about Spain and the beautiful poolside manager. When Stella sees the state of Lisa's room at Paradise, she insists she come and stay at her place, in the guest room, of course. That doesn't last long as the chemistry between the two is intense. Will Lisa return to London leaving Stella with a broken heart or will Lisa take a chance on love?
What I love most about a Lise Gold book is how I can truly envision the beautiful locales she writes about. It's almost like being there and walking around the quaint Spanish villages. In the last year and a half I have traveled to Las Vegas for three days and driven to Texas to take my mother in law home. I'm clearly in need of an escape and I can always do that while I read one of her books. This year alone I have visited Rome, Switzerland, Norway, Bangkok and now Spain. I actually googled some of the places in Spain that are in this book and put them on my list of places I would like to visit while I was reading.
As well as she portrays the locales, her characters are just as memorable. She writes strong women who may not be at their best in the beginning but through their willingness to open their hearts, they find that missing piece that completes them. Lisa is someone trying to piece her life back together after losing everything and although she is down she doesn't give up. Her inner strength keeps her from completely losing herself and Stella is the perfect woman to help her through tough times. Stella is a bit of a player but is at a place where she's tired of clubbing is drawn to Lisa immediately. She just wants to bring a smile to her face. I loved the visit with Stella's family as well as it gave us even more of a glimpse into what makes Stella so lovely.
I haven't read a Lise Gold book yet that I haven't loved. I'm glad to see it continue with this one. I can't wait see what the second book in the series has in store.
"Welcome to Paradise" is a great feel-good romance with relatable and likable characters and a beautiful setting in Spain. I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to read the second book in this series.
There is no other author who writes so descriptively (but not too much or boring description haha) that I can actually visualize, feel, breathe in the surroundings she puts forth. I absolutely love everything Lise Gold writes! Truly one of my favorites!
literally nothing happens, it's very low drama, but also absolutely no plot lol. the characters' connection felt very shallow and instalove-y, so that didn't work for me either. the sex scenes got so repetitive and boring that i was skimming them after a while (and the one involving food was gross 💀)
Lise Gold is extremely talented. I really enjoyed this book, and look forward to the rest in the series. The MCs had great chemistry. I had a hard time putting it down when life got in the way. I loved the fact that it was low angst, and unnecessary arguing. I look forward to more in the future by Lise Gold.
I really like Lise Gold's books. She has some good editors and good beta readers. That is one thing I can appreciate when reading a book from an "Indie" author. Anyway, I enjoyed Welcome to Paradise. The mains were likable and I was happy that this one had little to no angst. My only complaint was it was a little slow at times. 4 stars
Another great book from Lise. There is something in her writing I just love. And as a big fan of series I'm already waiting for book two. Bring it on, Marcy and Zoe!
The best part of this book is that it takes place in Europe, and makes you feel like you’re on vacation. The story occurs during Covid, which is interesting but inconsistent – they start out wearing masks but precautions are quickly forgotten. The characters are likeable but there’s almost no conflict.
Short Summary: After the loss of her girlfriend and job, Lisa moves to Paradise Hotel to regroup. Stella is the poolside manager who immediately notices and falls for the beautiful, sad, new guest. Stella gets Lisa out of her funk, and as she works to turn her life around, the two fall for each other.
It was honestly a little boring to me. Well-written, yes. But the plot was very slice of life, which I feel only works when a relationship has already been established. It was lacking in conflict.
4.5 STARS Welcome to Paradise where the sun is hot but the romance is hotter…
Lisa Walker has been at the all-inclusive Paradise Hotel in Benidorm, Spain, for barely a week and has already been labeled as “Miss Grumpy” by the staff for not wanting to get involved in the hotel’s activities or socialise with the other British holiday makers who flock to the hotel ever week. But Lisa isn’t like those other holiday makers, she’s in Paradise because she’s broken up with her longterm girlfriend, lost her job, and given up her London apartment in order to save money while she hunts for a new job. This sunny summer escape is meant to be a reset but it’s felt like anything but. Until she meets poolside manager Stella Castillo, who steps in to ensure Lisa isn’t about to file a complaint about her staff after they inadvertently put their foot in it. It should only be a five minute exchange, but Stella is intrigued by Lisa and is soon inviting her out of Paradise to show her the beauty of Spain beyond the non-Spanish tourist strip. It’s clear the pair are attracted to one another, and it’s not long before the fall into a casual summer romance. Lisa’s in Spain for a finite period of time, and they’re going to make the most of however long that is, but maybe this summer fling could be a forever romance.
Lise transports us to the sunny Spanish coast in this swoony sapphic romance that delivers a lot of laughs, so much heart, plenty of fur babies, and a generous sprinkling of spice. Lisa and Stella’s relationship was so fun to follow as they navigated a summer fling that quickly turned into something more. The chemistry between the pair was undeniable, and although Lise was somewhat heavy-handed on the number of spicy scenes she included, it made sense for a couple who swept up in the magic of a summer romance, and it didn’t actually feel like an overload.
This book made for such a nice change from a lot of other romances as it didn’t include a lot of angst in the relationship, and it also didn’t deliver the infamous third act break-up. And although I love those things about romance novels, I also just really enjoyed reading a more laid-back story where it was all about the relationship developing between the two main characters. It felt realistic, because even though they did have a few obstacles to deal with and overcome, they didn’t let them effect their relationship to literal breaking point.
A really interesting aspect to this story is the inclusion of the pandemic, which is something I’ve not seen a lot of romance writers in particular include in their books yet. And while that doesn’t mean I suddenly want everyone to include the pandemic in their books, because it is a nice escape to not have in mentioned at all, it was actually a really interesting and realistic inclusion by Lise. Like in real life, both Lisa and Stella had their livelihoods affected by the pandemic, with Lisa having lost her job because of it. The book takes place during a time when the world is opening up again after being in lockdown, and we see how the pandemic affected the hospitality industry from Stella’s perspective. It’s not a major focus in the book, but it’s a nice realistic touch that helps bring the two main characters together.
This was such a gorgeous sapphic romance, so if you’re looking for a sunny escape with a side of spice and a fur baby or two, this is definitely a book that needs to be added to the top of your TBR. There’s a reason why everyone loves Lise’s writing, and I can now see why!
Lisa is on vacation is Spain, according to the hotel website in Paradise, in reality in a rundown hotel in a tourist village. But the room is cheap, the hotel is all inclusive, Lisa who’s lost her job and her flat back in England due to the pandemic can’t really complain. Still dealing with the fact that her girlfriend left her, she meets the charming poolside manager Stella, who’s the opposite of her ex.
The best part about this book was that it was easygoing without any added relationship drama or misunderstandings. Lots and lots of sex scenes are an added bonus of course, Stella and Lisa have lots of chemistry and are basically uhauling pretty quickly. I love that even their pets (all seven of them, but specifically Pablo and the dogs) have their own personalities. We also see lots of personal growth in Lisa when she regains her confidence, starts actively seeking for job opportunities and succeeds. I’m a big fan of the supporting cast, all unique and lovely characters - and a few side plots to make you smile or laugh out loud. All in all a wonderful book and I can’t wait to read more of these because I’ve just seen it’s the first part of a series! Very excited and looking forward to the next book!

It’s really one of the fluffiest stories I have ever read which is not a bad thing, if you want to have an easy read with lots of spicy scenes.
Still, it was kind of boring as it nothing really happened. Lisa was grumpy in the beginning, but that didn’t last long. I’d say, Lisa and Stella hit it off very quickly. I thought, there would be some bitch fight kind of thing, but as soon as Stella talked to her, they got along.
There was no angst, no drama. I was waiting for something big to happen, something that would make me more excited. But everything just went smoothly.
As for the many many spicy scenes; I wished I had counted them. To my liking, there are way too many sex scenes and I started skimming at some point. The MCs are like horny teenagers who can’t take their hands off each other. Not saying that this is a bad thing. I just really missed some real plot.
I truly love almost anything Lise Gold touches. One of the things i truly enjoy about her writing style is the amount of chapters and what those chapters mean in a story. They feel, imo more than in other books, like progression. It sounds silly and obvious, but chapters feel like they hold more significance within her works. Maybe im just putting it on a pedestal.
I love the characters, i think that the love between them is sweet. I love the spanish villages, Benidorm sounds like hell on earth, but Lise somehow makes it charming. Especially Altea.
Too many WLW books can get formulaic - women fall in love, break apart for some reason, then come back together. And it works. Some of my favorite WLW books follow that formula. But when I find those books that don’t, that chart a different course, those appeal to me greatly. And thus here we have a story filled with questions, external problems to solve, and a fling that steadily grows into deep and enduring love. I hope the next two books in this series are good too.
Welcome to Paradise is another enjoyable romance by Lise Gold. It is very sweet and almost angst-free. Both of the MCs are kind, charming women who would be attractive as friends, employees, or lovers. I think that's the only problem with this novel - it's a little too simple. I am a huge fan of Gold's novel The Next Life which - IMHO - has as much chemistry as this book but a lot more complexity and depth.
Lise Gold is very good at the island romance. Being in Spain is just as good if not better. Lisa goes to Spain after finding a cheap hotel to spend some time until she could get her life back. Stella is the pool manager at the hotel Lisa is staying at. After a mishap at another establishment pulls them together, both their lives start to change. This was a sweet and uplifting read and I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
It is a fun book to read and it made me laugh and spend a good time, mostly because i'm from spain and the story (and the series itself) happens in benidorm (and as someone from spain I must say I would never go there to spend my holidays cause: too many guiris hahaha), but, well, nevermind, I enjoyed it and that's all that matters.
Also: we never eat PAELLA for dinner. NEVER. Don't do that!! hahaha
Great character development and chemistry, as well as a well crafted, realistic story set in a realistic modern day setting are the things that really set this story apart from most that I've read recently. I think this is the first story that wasn't specifically about the pandemic that includes the realities of life as we now know it. Highly recommended!
This book was so good. It had everything you could want. And best of all they handled the issues by talking them out responsibly and not shutting down and closing off. Which is stupid and overdone these days. This book was so refreshing and wonderful. Can't wait to read the next in the series.
I liked everything about this book! The characters and plot were nicely developed and the storyline kept you engaged. I enjoyed how the relationship between Lisa and Stella developed and continued to grow without the that typical drama of a break up and make up. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.
A life-changing vacation has more in store for a group of people working at hotels in Spain. Likeable characters, good chemistry between MCs, but it's not in my top favorites for Lise Gold.
Stella might just be the perfect woman. And I love that the future books in the series have been set up here. Not just because the characters are familiar but because now I’m invested in Stella and Lisa but mostly in Butters and Meatball.
Cute romance with spicy scenes. Definitely a feel good read, as there was no conflict except the setting at the beginning. All the roadblocks they came across seemed to Resolve in less than a couple chapters to a happily ever after.
