It started with a kiss…

A kiss that ended badly…with the whole world opening up.

—Literally.

When the community hall is swallowed by a sinkhole in outback Australia, it’s up to Shawn and Madison to save their friends. But the people in the hall have all been taken. The lizard creatures who live under the ground want them. And what are these other strange denizens of the caves and caverns who are also after them?

Shawn and Madison face a race against time to stop their friends from becoming the latest meal for the lizards and their queen.

I received the book for a fair review; it does not affect my views on the book.
I will not repeat the synopsis here. Shawn and Madison find themselves in the most surreal situation. As someone who also lives in Adelaide, I will be paranoid when a sinkhole appears now. Under Ground is a quick read with simple goals: to stay alive, to save his friends, and hopefully to save the world.

This is my one, and only Halloween read. Creepy setting, check. Scary Creatures, check. Scary moments, plenty.

Yes, definitely a good horror that you should not be reading near a dark hole.

Steven Streeter’s Under Ground is a young adult novella for lovers of Stephen King novels with a dash of older horror and adventure writers like HG Lovecraft and Edgar Rice Burroughs.
The novella combines horror, the supernatural and adventure with a dose of romance and a whole lot of suspense. It skillfully combines fact and fantasy in a way that enables the reader to become immersed in his terrifying nether world. His descriptions of dark, claustrophobic tunnels and the creatures that inhabit them are as vivid as they are memorable. It is written with in a cliffhanger style that builds expectation and trepidation in equal measure. There’s also humour among the terror, such as when a life-saving mobile phone is used. We are sure the novella will appeal to his target audience of young adults looking for a linear story with abundant thrills. Also, the striking imagery and scenes of violence mean that it could be adapted into a graphic novel.
The novella will appeal more to young men than women. The main character, Shawn, is presented as the all-conquering hero while his girl-friend, Madison, is mostly a damsel in distress waiting for direction and comfort. In addition, it is the male lizards that are dominant and the koala men are, well, all men.
Readers who like imaginative page-turners will respond well to Streeter’s novella.

Recommended.

Under Ground by Steven Streeter is a riveting story. Venture into the outback if you dare. This YA short story makes you quiver with fear because the suspense is so vividly described. The anticipation of what is going to happen next makes you keep reading.
Shawn and Madison are at a birthday party in a hall in the small, outback town where they live. All their friends are there too. When Shawn tries to kiss his friend of many years, she isn't pleased and walks out towards a large tree. Shawn follows her and apologises but Madison makes her way back to the hall, still angry with him. Then something happens that changes the whole night for both of them and their friends.
A sinkhole has swallowed the hall and everyone in it. Even Madison has slipped into it while walking back to join the others. It's up to Shawn to find out where everyone is and why this has happened. What he doesn't know is what creatures lie beneath in the underground caves.
Steven has woven a story full of horror, action and quite an amount of blood that sits well in the outback setting. This YA short story keeps you enthralled with the suspense flowing on every page.

I received an ARC of this short story from Black Hare Press via BookSprout.

This story has it all; a bit of romance, friendship, an exciting setting, and huge reptiles threatening to destroy it all! I mean, the book is set in Australia’s outback, so naturally, there are enormous creatures, right? The mere thought of it made me shiver, but the adventure gripped and held me in.

From the very first sentence, this tale lures in the reader, making it impossible to stop reading until you reach the last page. And then you want to read it again - which I did! The characters feel so real, believable and it’s impossible not to become vested in their progress and well-being.

This book is impossible to put down, and I’d give anything to read it again for the first time! Highly recommend!
