Genesis: Secrets of Creation

Rate this book
11 lectures, Munich, August 16–26, 1910 (CW 122) How was the world created? From a direct spiritual perception of the facts, Rudolf Steiner presents a new perspective that transcends the bipolar arguments of both the creationists and the scientific reductionists. He affirms that clairvoyant research accords with the biblical descriptions, but he emphasizes that the text of Genesis has to be interpreted in a special way. In this extraordinary document, Steiner speaks of the six days of creation as a reawakening of the previous phases of the Earth’s development. He describes the work of spiritual hierarchies in the creation of Earth and clarifies the relationship of the Elohim and the biblical Jehovah. In addition, Steiner discusses themes of light and darkness, the meaning of Adam and Eve, the “day of rest” on the seventh day, the stages of human development on Earth, and the special character of the Hebrew language. Also featured in this new edition is a previously unpublished introductory lecture on the meaning of mystery drama. This book is a translation from German of Die Geheimnisse der biblischen Schöpfungsgeschichte. Das Sechtagwerk im 1. Buch Moses (GA 122).

Rudolf Joseph Lorenz Steiner was an Austrian occultist, social reformer, architect, esotericist, and claimed clairvoyant. Steiner gained initial recognition at the end of the nineteenth century as a literary critic and published works including The Philosophy of Freedom. At the beginning of the twentieth century he founded an esoteric spiritual movement, anthroposophy, with roots in German idealist philosophy and theosophy. His teachings are influenced by Christian Gnosticism or neognosticism. Many of his ideas are pseudoscientific. He was also prone to pseudohistory.
In the first, more philosophically oriented phase of this movement, Steiner attempted to find a synthesis between science and spirituality. His philosophical work of these years, which he termed "spiritual science", sought to apply what he saw as the clarity of thinking characteristic of Western philosophy to spiritual questions,  differentiating this approach from what he considered to be vaguer approaches to mysticism. In a second phase, beginning around 1907, he began working collaboratively in a variety of artistic media, including drama, dance and architecture, culminating in the building of the Goetheanum, a cultural centre to house all the arts. In the third phase of his work, beginning after World War I, Steiner worked on various ostensibly applied projects, including Waldorf education, biodynamic agriculture, and anthroposophical medicine.
Steiner advocated a form of ethical individualism, to which he later brought a more explicitly spiritual approach. He based his epistemology on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's world view in which "thinking…is no more and no less an organ of perception than the eye or ear. Just as the eye perceives colours and the ear sounds, so thinking perceives ideas." A consistent thread that runs through his work is the goal of demonstrating that there are no limits to human knowledge.

Rudolf Steiner’s mastery of the ancient Hebrew language is an eye-opener onto the profound meaning of the story of creation in the Bible. It shows how modern translations in foreign languages lose the feeling (heart) for the true meaning of the words.

Rudolf Steiner goes down to the meaning of each letter and even sound to explain its importance.

Personally, these series of lectures has helped me make sense of the reason for the construction of the pyramids in Bulgaria. The pyramids and megaliths found in Bulgaria are an extension of the process of creation of Earth and Man. And we see it on the ground in the alignment of the pyramids and position of the megaliths that are all turned towards the Sun from where emanates the Spirit that sparked the process of creation.

Steiner's detailed interpretation and explanation of of biblical symbolism is unparalleled in its clarity and the concepts it presents. The outlook presented here is no dogmatic reductionist christianity, but neither is it deadened material science. Rather it is a revival in a new form of the mystery knowledge which all mystical traditions stem from, and a nuanced way of looking at the cosmos that seems new but is actually unfathomably ancient
