Selene the snarky cat is, not surprisingly, a delight.

Plotwise it is not too well crafted. Sometimes there are problems with logic. For example in one scene there are Clint, Cora, Lilac and Selene researching theories together and in a later book Cora's mother is meeting Clint for the first (?) time. So I repeat myself that the plot is only as good as any paranormal cozy mystery series. Although I like the fact that there is always a standalone mystery in the book as well as the over-all story of the Rescue of Lavender.
But there is the character of Selene the snarky cat familiar. I really do love her and that is obviously more important to me than any problems with logic.
And of course I am still waiting for Lavender to be rescued!

My favourite Danielle Garrett series.
Will read again whenever I need a bit of Selene snark in my life! Or even better listen to it read by Amanda Ronconi.

Cora the Air Magic Illusion witch and Selene her cat familiar are back and on the trail of the vanished odd Aunt Lavender in this second of the Nine Lives Magic tales. More cute, sassy, magical, and a little murder mystery-ish splendidly told by Amanda Ronconi in the must-listen audiobook version.

Hexed Hiss-tory follows right on the heels of the events in the earlier book and assumes the reader is up to speed on Cora’s history personally and with Selene, her potential love interests, her family, and the magical small town backdrop. That said, it probably wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to jump in out of order.

I liked Cora from the start and her laid back outlook on life. She has had a few upheavals like her divorce and the loss of her aunt, but she processes and doesn’t get worked up. This is good because Selene, her cat familiar, is an uptight, dramatic, and bothersome individual who gets a kick out of trying to push Cora to the limit and make those around her nuts. For all their Odd Couple vibes, this pair do have the joint need to find Aunt Lavender and to solve local murders they come across in common.

It has a slow start and pace, but builds to a few exciting moments at the end. There are also a few tension moments when they work the case and ‘interview’ aka call everyone murderers ala Selene. Cora is into Clint, but is scared to open up to a relationship because she is afraid of being hurt if he leaves when he is done taking care of his dying mother. She is also confused by her feelings for her ex, Roger, who has blown back into town after discovering the big city and the big city job aren’t for him. At first, I was worried about the triangle, but I think Cora got some closure with one and a tenuous new start with the other one by the time the book finished.

I loved how Cora’s mom got in on the investigating with her and Selene and think Aunt Lavender must be a real hoot. I hope they find her, yes that is still unresolved though the murder mystery was solved, just so I can see her live. Her house is insanely full of junk and curiosities and she has whimsical research projects.

As I said, Amanda Ronconi is the series narrator and she is abso-fab with Cora, Selene and the rest of the cast, the tone, and the pace of these books.

When the book wrapped up, I was left eager to keep going into the new installment and see more Cora and Selene detection work while on the trail of clues to discover Lavender’s fate. Paranormal cozy mystery fans will probably get a kick out of this series.

I rec’d a digital audio copy from Tantor to listen to in exchange for an honest review.

This was another great read from Danielle Garrett. She's become an auto-buy (or request) author for me, as I can count on her cozy mysteries to have fantastic characters, fun mysteries, and great humor. This was no exception.

My favorite part of these books is Selene, Cora's familiar. She's a talking cat and has the exact personality you'd expect a cat to have. She cracks me up and Amanda Ronconi's narration delivers her snark perfectly. I love all the characters and I'm really enjoying watching Cora and Clint's blooming romance alongside her and Roger's awkward interactions 18 months post-divorce. It's not a relationship we see in books that often and I really am enjoying the way Danielle Garrett wrote it; it's a reality of life and I like having a life after divorce book that's not ugliness either.

I also love the little town and just the laid-back life. Cora rides her bike to work most days. She runs a magical candle shop and mentions more than once possibly opening late... just so relaxed. One morning she can't sleep and goes out on the lake to kayak at like 4:30am. Those little sprinkles, mixed in with mystery of her missing aunt and a local death make the story such a treat to read.

As I've already mentioned, Amanda Ronconi narrated this. I've said it many times, but I'll say it again - Amanda Ronconi is in my 5 narrators for sure. She's the perfect narrator for these kinds of books, the cozy mystery, snarky humor, and small-town characters are performed beautifully. SHe really brings the stories to life, and I look forward to more from both her and Danielle Garrett in this series!

A pretty good story. I know it was because I read it in one sitting. However…. It had a cliffhanger and I really hate cliffhangers and that cost one star. I still downloaded the next in the series however, so that will tell you something!

Hexed Hiss-tory is Book 2 in the awesome new Nine Lives Magic series by Danielle Garrett.
I really LOVE Cora and her new snarky familiar Selene. Cora and Selene along with her new love interest Clint are searching for her Aunt Lavender and what may of caused her disappearance.

I really love the magical town of Winterspell. There are some twists and turns that I didn't see coming and the story is well written and perfectly paced.

I LOVE this series and I look forward to more adventures with Cora and Selene!

This series is perfect if you’re looking for a cozy, low stakes mystery with a little bit of romance sprinkled in. The banter with Selene is hilarious and I’m excited to keep reading. If you’re looking for an entertaining audiobook, I highly recommend this one!

The series continues in this second book. Cora and her cat Selene still have no idea where Aunt Lavender might be. When their only lead is murdered, they need to figure it out to determine if it has anything to do with Aunt Lavender. Fun characters and a pretty good mystery. I will continue to read this series.

I totally fell in love with this series, it's such a treat for my heart. Quick, cozy, interesting. The only thing I didn't like so much is the murderer is a wife with money motif, again. Hope to get something a little bit different in the next book.

I am loving Winterspell and the adventures of Cora and Selene. Selene is just so bad! Then again, she pretty much just says what everyone else wishes they could! Of course, Cora has to deal with the consequences. I am definitely coming back to find out - where is Lavender!?

This story just isn’t for me. I like the magical town and the Karen Walker type cat, but the rest just doesn’t do it.
I only listened to this one to find out about what happened to Aunt Lavender… and still don’t know. I won’t continue.

This is book two of the Nine Lives Magic series. In this book, our MC Cora, and her resident cold blanket, Selene (who is still more annoying than funny) are on the hunt for Cora's missing Aunt Lavender, but the last person to have an issue with her (that they can find) turns up dead. Now, Cora, Selene, Clint and Cora's mom, are on the hunt for the killer and what, if anything it has to do with Lavender's kidnapping.

Cora is a great character and I am liking the town and side characters. The romance with Clint is progressing along, and I like him for her. The repeated will she or won't she, with her ex-husband Roger (not my cup or tea,) seems to be wrapping up and I hope we've seen the last of it. Selene even had moments of being marginally helpful in this book, although her snark is still annoying.

Overall, I will continue to recommend this series. It's a fun, light, cozy read with a good mystery.

In the last book we come to the realization that Cora's Aunt Lavender is not on one of her impromptu trips but that she may actually have been kidnapped and now in danger. Seline wouldn't have bonded with Cora if she wasn't in danger of dying herself from being parted from Lavender for so long.

The sheriff is less than helpful in this so Cora and Seline make a point of working slowly through her aunt's house. It would be a lot easier if the witch hadn't been such a hoarder.

At least this visit to the house gives a possible lead, the landline phone rings while they are there, and the calling party leaves a message.

According to Seline, Sal is Salvatore Greco, a trustee for the International Magical Library Society and also an archivist for the Arcane Council. Lavender has visited him often while researching her own projects.

A visit to Sal clears up why he was calling Lavender, apparently, she stole a very valuable book from him, he won't sell it and she either needs to return it or he's sending Warden Quinton to deal with her. Sal does help to establish what Lavender was researching but doesn't really help with who might have taken her. Just opens more possibilities.

Seline decides they need more information on what the book looks like, since Clint was there with Cora, he accompanies her to Sal's home once again. Unfortunately, they find him dead at the foot of the staircase.

Now they have yet another mystery to solve on top of finding Aunt Lavender.

Cora is tentatively beginning a relationship with Clint, but she has to deal with her mother wanting her to go back to her ex, Roger. So not happening, but the woman is determined to get her way. The other problem is Roger wants her back as well.

Set-ups, too many suspects, romance, scrying and many other things entwine as Cora, Seline and Clint work to solve the death of Sal and find Aunt Lavender.

I certainly didn't expect who the killer turns out to be, and of course we still have no idea where Aunt Lavender is, in spite of finding a very important clue.

Leanna is her best friend, Selene her snarky cat and Templeton a nearly totally useless sheriff. The sheriff is told about Lavender's kidnapped but he doesn't appear to be overly interested

One thing that makes Lavender's home very hard to search is that she is a hoarder and the whole place is filled with so much stuff that it's hard to get around at all.

There's also an International Magical Library in the town. Sal is dead, maybe an accident, maybe murder. Selene accusers the librarian of being the killer which, of course, is not the proper thing to do without overwhelming evidence.

As a complication Roger, her ex-husband, seems to be trying to get back with her and that just makes things much more difficult.

There's also a reference to Archimedes Death Ray which was actually real, although not in the electronic death ray of science fiction. It consisted of a lot of soldiers holding bronze shields that were highly polished and could reflect sunlight.

If ships attacked (during the daylight) then the men would hold the shields and focus the reflected light on the ship's sails, setting them afire. Of course if it were cloudy or at night it wouldn't have worked.

I like the idea of a magical library loaded with fascinating books. Any story based on a library of books and missing books will almost always hold my interest.

Following a disturbing revelation regarding my Aunt Lavender, my reluctant familiar and I have to work together to solve another mystery—one that hits much closer to home.
Unfortunately, Selene isn’t big on the whole ‘teamwork’ concept.

Mine:
This is the second book in the Nine Lives Magic paranormal mystery series by Danielle Garrett. I liked the characters, the mystery, and the weirdness. The story is told from Cora’s perspective.
The story begins shortly after the second book ends. I listened to this book on Hoopla from my library. I own an e-book copy of this book.

Now that they know from Selene that Aunt Lavendar was kidnap, the search is on to find her. Also, the search for a missing book which might or might not help find Aunt Lavendar comes into play.
The owner of the book is killed and becomes the primary story with the search for Cora’s aunt a secondary and arching story.

Amanda Ronconi does a wonderful job as the narrator. Looking forward to the next story in the series.

Humorous and well paced but somehow dragging

This book/series is starting off with a few really solid trends. Following on the heels of book 1, we continue with our very likeable FMC and her insanely chaotically loveable pain of a familiar. This book gets us less romantic side plots (Clint is still present but less of a focus) and a lot more Mommy daughter time in a solidly well written plot thread. The antagonist is oddly sympathy inducing but well resolved. The continued lack of movement on Lavender is a bit dragging already for me. Mostly because she doesn't sound like a great character to begin with and so much focus is on this obnoxious self centered woman we haven't met.

The humor is really great, the focal story of this book is well paced and presented, and the main characters we meet are all well written. The editing continues to be high quality with few, if any, noticeable errors to distract the reader. It's a good read but be ready to invest in several books if you do start this series.

At the end of Witchy Whiskers Cora accidentally makes a new candle that includes Selene’s fur. Once lit the candle makes Selene to remember a repressed memory that involves Lavender. Selene realizes that Aunt Lavender was actually kidnapped.

Now it’s up to Cora and Selene to look for clues since the deputy of Winterspell is ignoring Cora. One clue they find is that Lavender apparently “borrowed” a book from her friend Salvatore Greco. As the two continue their investigation Salvatore ends up murdered. In addition to looking for clues concerning Aunt Lavender’s kidnapping Cora and Selene must figure out what happened to Salvatore and if his death was related to Lavender’s disappearance.

This book was so much fun to read! I love Cora and Selene’s banter. I also love Cora figuring out her relationship with her ex-husband Roger and her new love interest Clint. In addition to those returning characters we also got to learn more about Cora’s mother Lilac.

Another fine and funny mystery with Cora, the candle making witch, and Selene, her feline familiar.

I really like this series! Cora's eccentric and adventuresome Aunt Lavender is missing. She tends to disappear on searches for historical magical objects without warning or leaving messages, but she has been gone several months. In fact, Selene is Lavender's familiar, but has attached herself to Cora in Lavender's absence--which is very unusual. Familiars only seek new bonds when their own witch passes on. There are more and more questions to be answered about Lavender's whereabouts and intentions, and when Selene accesses a hidden memory about the situation, finding Lavender becomes critical. Don't miss this second book in the series, because book three is in the works and the cover is terrific!

Love spending time in Winterspell

💖 Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
📚 Genre: Cozy mystery, paranormal

💕 Positives:
* The storyline was interesting and the book was incredibly hard to put down.

* Selene is pretty awesome. While she can be annoying, I really like her as a character.

* Nice amount of red herrings .

🚫 Negatives:
* I didn't care for the Roger subplot. Ex coming back into the picture is a theme that I usually avoid.

⚡Trigger Warning: None

🌟 Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The mystery was great and I loved the characters. Selene is a hoot! Sassy and very opinionated but strong magical wise. The overarching mystery of Lavender is a little bit slow but I guess the build up is for a reason. The magical setting with creatures like fog wraiths is pretty neat too. Definitely going to read book #3 in the series next.

Entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series

This is an entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. A fun cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Cora is a witch who lives in a small western town supernatural‘s only. It is somewhere along the west coast. She owns and runs a magic candle shop along with her familiar a sarcastic talking cat. Cora recently helped solve a Mystery and now seems to become in twined in them more often than she would like. Along with these random mysteries murders another things going on she is searching for her aunt who was kidnapped and is missing. So she has to mystery solved at the same time. Can she solve the current mystery in the town and find a rant.? Read on and find out. Very entertaining and a fun read.

The search for Aunt Lavender continues, this time leading our intrepid heroes into the lair of a rare book collector. But all is not right in the stacks, and with a dead body on the stairs, accusations are flying around (mostly coming from the cat), and law enforcement might be getting ready to make an arrest—for trespassing (because what if the murder was just an accident?)

Once again, the prize for the snarkiest cat goes to Seline. The mystery is pretty satisfying and relatively solvable, which makes for a fun readalong. I'm a little less fond of all the relationship stuff that is swirling around, as I think it gets to be a lot of plot lines for one book. But I can forgive it since the story is pretty fun.

Cora and Selene are still trying to find her Aunt Lavender, they are not having much luck. They get a possible lead from a phone call, from a guy named Sal. They go to talk to him about what Lavender took. They figure out that Sal was not forth coming, Cora takes Clint with her as well. They find Sal has died, Cora thinks there is more to the his death. Cora is also getting closer to Clint, but she has to figure out her feelings her ex.

This is just a tiny bit of what happens in this book. There are some twist and turns to the story, you will not believe who really did it. I really enjoy the developing relationship between Cora and Clint. Really find Selene funny.

A very mundane magical world

I picked this up because I was curious about how the author would approach a magical world. It's never really elaborated upon. It's basically a story about middle class people living with slightly different circumstances. Magic is circumstantial. There are mysteries, but it's more like scooby doo than Nancy drew. It's like the author has a good idea, but does not know how to execute it. Also the MC is a doormat, her familiar has zero respect for her and she is constantly apologizing for her actions. Wish she'd grow a backbone if she wants to investigate people. Also why doesn't anyone carry a gun? It's just not a very thought through novel.

Hexed Hiss-tory by Danielle Garrett continues the delightful adventures of Selene and Cora as they search for clues in a new murder case involving a local archivist—potentially tied to Aunt Lavender's disappearance.

Selene is what keeps me coming back time and time again; her witty, cat-like persona adds charm and continuity to the series. Danielle Garrett's writing makes for an easy and quick read, though I did notice occasional repetition of details within a few sentences, which was a minor annoyance. However, these moments were not enough to detract from the overall enjoyment.

A highlight for me was seeing Cora's mom, Lilac, become more involved in the case towards the end of the book. Her involvement added a fresh dynamic and depth to the storyline. I highly recommend Hexed Hiss-tory and eagerly look forward to continuing the journey with Selene, Cora, and the rest of the cast in the series.
