Hello, my name's Dorothy Koomson and I'll try to make this bit that's all about me as interesting as possible. I wrote my first novel called There's A Thin Line Between Love And Hate when I was 13. I used to write a chapter every night then pass it around to my fellow convent school pupils every morning, and they seemed to love it.
I grew up in London and then grew up again in Leeds when I went to university. I eventually returned to London to study for my masters degree and stayed put for the following years. I took up various temping jobs and eventually got my big break writing, editing and subbing for various women's magazines and national papers.
Fiction and storytelling were still a HUGE passion of mine and I continued to write short stories and novels every spare moment that I got. In 2001 I had the idea for The Cupid Effect and my career as a published novelist began. And it's been fantastic. In 2006, third novel, My Best Friend's Girl was published. It was incredibly successful - selling nearly 90,000 copies within its first few weeks on sale. Six weeks later, it was selected for the Richard & Judy Summer Reads Book Club and the book went on to sell over 500,000 copies. Oh, there I go again, this is meant to be about me, not my novels.
Okay, back to me. I recently spent two years living in Sydney Australia, and now I'm back in England. But I can't say for how long I'll be in the UK for because I've been well and truly bitten by the travel bug
Dorothy Koomson always knows how to pull her readers into a storyline and keep you completely wrapped up in the protagonist’s lives. The complex characters we follow in her latest novel centre on Cleo Forsum Pryce who we first meet in the present day when she is charged with attempted murder. It backtracks a few weeks to her taking steps to destroy her seemingly perfect life, first by ending her successful career as a script writer of Baking Detective and secondly her marriage to Wallace. We then go further back in time to 1996 to her days as a student at Leeds University where she becomes best friends with Trina. Both of them love rom-coms and they use this to discuss the guy who was staring hard at Cleo who proves to be Heath Sawyer. The timelines work well blending together seamlessly.
The contrast between then and now could not be starker with events of 25 years ago feeling like a romcom with the writing being light and breezy. The Cleo of then is good fun and her life seems to be full. Later, it becomes intense, dark and shocking as Cleo is carrying a huge burden. She is a very different person in the present day and it’s intriguing trying to work out what, how and why her life has imploded. You feel the pain that Cleo feels when she’s down and happiness when she’s up.
The characterisation is excellent even those who are unlikeable are well portrayed and you gasp at some of the dialogue with the racist and sexist comments that Cleo is on the receiving end of especially in her career.
Although this is a clever, multi layered slow burner there are some jaw to the floor reveals with information bombs that explode your expectations and opinions of certain characters. There is plenty of tension and suspenseful moments and some well thought out plot twists as it builds to a very good ending.
This is another winner from a very talented author and someone whose books I will always want to read.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Headline for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
I learnt the word “Limerence” and what it means! “Compulsive thoughts about just one person…..addiction”.
I’d never heard of it, have you? And this (illness, mental state, obsession) played a huge part within this thriller that gripped my full attention. I absolutely love in books when an author takes a fact, such as this and uses it, expands it and builds a very intriguing interesting character such as this.
Compulsive addiction, dangerous behaviour and hiding the truth. Trust hidden within relationships equals many many problem’s.
I made lots of notes in this book that I hadn’t done for sometime.
The dangerous obsession within the relationship of husband and wife and the guilt when the wife found out….why would she feel guilty I hear you ask if the obsession isn’t hers?
I never want to meet someone like Heath! He’s creepy yet at times comes across a loving soul.
I was on the edge of my seat, biting my nail, troubled many times as certain revelations took place. He revealed things about his wife….how did he know?
How can someone have so much power over someone else, someone they love?
Cleo and Heath. A very toxic relationship while Heath moves on to another woman while Cleo leaves him. Even that is proving difficult.
Cleo who is a series writer of a TV series, yet people were getting hurt around her and guess what! It ties in with episodes of her series.
I always wonder when reading any book that I read how the author comes up with a title. From chapter 34 I soon found out, and I loved it.
I enjoyed every single moment with this book, I could hear the authors voice as I subscribe to her newsletters that drop into my email inbox. She’s a great writer, she’s got talent. I’ve plenty of her books on my shelves some yet to be read and some I would definitely reread.
You write crime stories Now someone is trying to frame you for murders using your same plotline You cant tell the police the truth Because then you would have to reveal about your other husband How will you ever be able to clear you name?
🚨DUN DUN DUN!🚨
This is a first from with this author and it certainly wont be a last. After reading the first chapter I knew was going to find this book severely engrossing. It captured my attention instantly and the writing style was tingling my eyeballs!
Our main character Cleo is one complex character that I was rooting for while also scratching my head in utter frustration. This is a book about obsession on a dangerous level, and it really kept me on my toes. There’s no spook or bump bump in the night, but I was terrified of the ‘other husband’. This is one psychological thriller that will really have you questioning whether to give the “quirky/ weird” girl or boy a chance.
The story is told in dual past and present timelines, and I must say the past was more favourable to me. Without saying too much there was something that happened that I found predictable but that’s because I am skeptical about everyone and everything in a book, but I like the way it was revealed and its conclusion. Personally, for me I would have opted for a different ending but I’m not super disappointed with how it ended.
⋆。°✩WHAT I LIKED⋆。°✩ ➽ Writing style- Easy to read ➽ Past chapters ➽ Unlikeable characters ➽ Unnerving tension ➽ Slow burn suspense
⋆。°✩WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE⋆。°✩ ➽ Could have been cut shorter ➽ Unnecessary information ➽ The pacing was choppy at times
This author is one I will sure be on the lookout to read more of her work.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PRE READ Went book shopping with my boyfriend! He picked this book up and thinks i will love it! Let see if he knows my thriller taste like he claims too! 😏 🩵🤍💛
Someone is trying to frame me for murder. They're hurting people in ways I write about - and making sure I'm the prime suspect. I think I know why. But I can't tell the police or even use my rock-solid alibi. Because then I'd have to confess about my other husband.
The pace is slow to begin with. It also felt a bit dragged out in the middle. The story has a dual timeline - Cleo wants a divorce in the present day from her husband she's clearly still in love with. And from 1996, when Cleo was at university where she met Heath. The story of their relationship was complex, we see the good and bad side of it. Cleo is a successful author, but the people in her life are dying the same way as the characters in her novels are. This is quite a hard book to review without giving away too many spoilers.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Headline and the author #DorothyKoomson for my ARC of #MyOtherHusband in exchange for an honest review,
Proudly announcing that TEA BOOKS is new Serbian publisher of Dorothy Koomson :) I fell in love with Dorothy's writing with her book "My Best Friend's Girl" and I became her first Serbian editor... and that love only grew up with years... I am both pleased and honoured to be her Serbian publisher now! You know when you love someone's writing and you know the author can't write bad book or the one you won't like... Dorothy is such an author!
Za srpske čitaoce informacija da nam je u planu da objavimo sve Dorotine knjige... I nastavak Poslednje kapi (priča o Popi i Sereni), sa istim prevodiocem...
This story had a good concept that didn’t fully come together for me. We know that Cleo is choosing to implode her own life, which seems to be going well, and we find out why through chapters dispersed throughout the current timeline that provide us the background that leads to her current situation.
At its heart, this is a tale of obsession, which I found fascinating (though it took a while to get there), but then so much other stuff started happening with murders and revenge that this primary theme that I wanted to learn more about got buried. Not much happens in the first half of the book and then SO MUCH happens in the last couple of chapters that it was somewhat jarring; and the end, while twisty, left me with unanswered questions. I did like some of the characters, especially Sidney, but felt that a good story became a little fantastical when all was said and done.
Overall, this wasn’t my favorite but I did like the concept and appreciated many of the characters. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It’s been a while since I’ve read a full book in one day but this was literally in my hand for the whole day.
I didn’t know what to expect from this book, I really had no clue what would happen and how it would end. The plot was unique and unpredictable, and the twist at the end which I completely did not see coming. I have to admit the start of the book is confusing, you’re thinking how it’s going to play out but also what’s going to happen. The subtle hints build up near the end resulting in a twist which I didn’t expect. But gradually as you read the book, it becomes clearer and less confusing. It’s not really until the end of the book where it makes sense.
I really enjoyed this book, maybe it was the different perspectives and the forced breaks in between which added to the reading experience. The writing style, and unique descriptions felt relatable and cohesive.
The physical book itself is of high quality, thick pages which added to the quality of the book. If you’re looking for a surprise, an journey of the unexpected this is the book for you. Not too sure how to describe this book, other than the fact that this is a unique book, a plot which I won’t forget.
Found this a bit too slow to properly immerse myself. A good ending but did drag to get there. Was left wanting more, but the tension just wasnt there for me.
“Usually, being in a library space, with the books and the atmosphere they created, acted like a shield to protect me from the excesses of being around other people. They absorbed the nonsense and made me not mind as much if they went off on random tangents that were nothing to do with me.” - Cleo Forsum
——
“I had wanted to make up stories since I was a teenager. Probably younger. The only thing I liked better than reading stories was making them up. Writing was my escape, my comfort. It was also going to be my future. I knew it. Once I had finished this course, I was going to make sure I had all the tools to start and finish a book. I was going to get myself into a routine so I wrote no matter what else was going on in my life.” - Cleo Forsum
——
“I use my writing to try to explore what I’m feeling, I try to get into the heads of other people so I can see things from their point of view. You can always tell when a writer doesn’t care. All the words, no matter how pretty, no matter how clever, if they don’t come from the heart, they mean nothing. They fall flat. You can always tell.” - Sidney Pryce
——
“We’re all capable of terrible things. That’s part of what makes us human. That’s part of what makes walking away from others so difficult. We spend a lot of time categorising people, while forgetting that very few of us sit in these categories neatly and stay there – we all fit into multiple categories. And in the capable-of-terrible-things category, very many of us fit.” - Alfred Heath Sawyer Berland
I was absolutely delighted to learn that Dorothy Koomson, one of my top ten, or quite possibly even my top five favourite authors had written a new novel. My Other Husband is a top-notch read.
Novelist and scriptwriter Cleo Forsum Pryce has had her books turned into a tv series, The Baking Detective but now she doesn't want to continue with the show and is divorcing her husband Wallace. Chloe has a secret and it's massive... and why are people in Chloe's life being attacked?
This was a totally engrossing tale of past crimes and control, and tension and suspense are in plentiful supply. With very strong and expertly drawn characters I found myself invested in them all the way through, though there were some necessary distasteful ones. I have read several of Dorothy Koomson's other novels, including The Ice Cream Girls, The Brighton Mermaid and Tell Me Your Secret, and this novel, My Other Husband is just as good. Great unpredictable storytelling and well-worth five stars.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Headline via NetGalley and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
Took me a while to finish this and I was left so disappointed. I had high hopes for this book after seeing all the rave reviews but ultimately it fell flat for me very early one. None of the characters were likeable, the story took an age to get going, and the ending was both unbelievable (not in a good way) and disappointing.
What I thought was going to be a crime/ thriller, turned out to be a boring story with a few murders briefly mentioned. The twist didn’t make any sense and by the time it was finally revealed I had lost all interest and just wanted to get to the end as quick as possible.
The many time changes and the different points of view made this difficult to follow at times as I found myself flicking back a few pages to check when the previous chapter was set.
Absolutely not for me. I rarely give 1 star reviews but I was so disappointed with this.
I was very disappointed by this book as I’ve enjoyed others by this author. It was unnecessarily and boringly detailed in places - e.g. why do we need to know about the way Cleo’s name is written on her security pass? It adds nothing to the story. I also grew very tired of reading about the many references to the maltesters in the coffee quirk. For someone who is supposed to be very intelligent, Cleo makes some very stupid and unbelievable decisions. Wish I’d given up at 40% when I first realised how boring the story was rather than plodding through to the end.

I really enjoyed this book. This was my first Koomson book (even though I've had one of her previous books on my shelf for the last 11 years, it's moved with me 7 times!), so I didn't really know what to expect. Somehow the first few chapters read like any other women's fiction book to me, especially because I chuckled quite a few times. Only later I realised there was something sinister going on... I found the story interesting, albeit not super believable. There were simply too many things where I thought "seriously?!". I also thought it dragged a bit in the middle. Nevertheless I enjoyed it and will be reading more of her books now, starting with the one I already own.
(4.5) This was really good. A little farfetched but aren’t they all?😂 Still the concept was different & the author wrote the relationships very well. I’ll definitely take a look at what else this author’s done, this was my first by her.
It is probably worth stating that generally I'm a Koomson fan, so if I say I struggled with this book, I'm not just taking a swipe. I know authors have to set the scene, but 200 pages in this seemed to be going nowhere and I seriously considered cutting my losses. However, I battled on as I felt I had already invested too much time to just ditch it ... and, yes, it marginally improved, but overall too long, too stodgy and if you are reading this as a whodunit (fortunately I wasn't) I'd say it would be disappointing as you've so few characters to pick from. It is a shame the book falls short as it is a genuine attempt to use fiction to highlight coercive/controlling behaviours, but that gets lost in the stodge and the plot is sufficiently fanciful to dilute the messaging.
I'll award this book three stars. I have mixed feelings about this one.
I liked the storyline. It was easy to follow, every part of the book seemed necessary and the confessions about the murders were great!
What I didn't like was the pace. It was a very long and slow book. At times, I'd be excited about reading. At other times, it'd drag. And I'd say it was more of a drama than a thriller.

Cleo Forsum is a famous writer. Her bestselling series about a baking detective is a hit television series. She is happily married to Wallace and loving the life she had always dreamt about.
UNTIL..
Cleo ends her series, her job and tells Wallace that she wants a divorce. Everyone around her are surprised and confused. But Cleo is driven to these drastic actions before something awful will happen.
We go back to Cleo twenty five years earlier as she is starting life as a student and meets Heath. She falls for him and at first they are very happy together, but Heath isn't who he appears to be and his behaviour becomes out of control and his jealousy increases. His actions have a profound effect on Cleo.
Cleo is convinced that Heath has returned and is watching her, wanting to hurt the people who mean the most to her.
I absolutely loved this book but then it's no secret that I am a huge fan of this author and have been since reading "The Ice Cream Girls"
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
Diria que a primeira metade do livro é calminha, ainda sem contornos de thriller. Mais para a frente, conforme vão surgindo algumas revelações surpreendentes, a história ganha um novo ritmo, tornando-se de leitura compulsiva.
So this is first for my with this author but I've heard lots of great things about her so when I got the offer of an early read I thought I'd take the opportunity to see what all the fuss is about and I can now completely understand why she is so highly rated.
This domestic drama takes obsession to a whole new level it sucked me, spun me found and spat me out, I was engaged from start to finish, it was cleverly executed with some shocking revelations along the way, well researched, thought out and superbly written.
I’m not sure if the majority of the reviewers are on drugs or something because there is no way it should be rated so highly.
The majority of the book was so boring and slow. I was literally watching TikTok’s will reading because I needed some background noise to keep me engaged.
The FMC dumping malteasers in her coffee was such an unnecessary detail and did not need to be mentioned on every other page.
Don’t think I’ll be trying any more of this authors books
This book is literal garbage. 419 pages that could have been 100 pages or less. Tons of fluff and a constant racial element. The ending was 100% unrealistic as was 90% of this book and the craziness in it.
