Those Regency Remingtons #1

The Duke Who Loved Me

Rate this book
A river divides their properties…bloodlines separate their hearts.

Anna Silverstone dreams of escaping her life of burlap dress and calloused fingers — brought about by hard labor at a workhouse. Though her father is rumored to be an earl, her lineage has never been proven. With her brother wishing to sell her hand to any willing merchant, the prospect of love is beyond her reach. That is until fate intervenes and she meets Colin. Not only is he sinfully handsome, but he is also a duke, and she wants nothing more than to be with him.

If she can only prove her bloodline, they will have a chance to be together…

Colin, 9th Duke of Greystoke, heads England's wealthiest and most powerful family — the Remingtons. With all life's luxuries at his fingertips, Colin should want for nothing, but his heart yearns for the impossible — a woman who loves him for who he is, not what he owns.

When Miss Anna Silverstone crosses his path, Colin begins to wonder if she might be the woman he has dreamed of. Beautiful, bold, and unafraid to speak her mind, she sees him as a man, not a title...

But can he look past her humble origins?

As Anna seeks to confirm her lineage, Colin wonders if he can balance the responsibilities of the dukedom with the man he truly is. But for this rag-to-riches romance to have a chance, each will have to fight for the happily ever after they both deserve.

A well written romance of two people from very different backgrounds finding love but there are huge obstacles in their path not least are lying & conniving people who should know better. I really liked Anna & my heart bled for her at times, I also liked Colin but felt he should grow a pair & put his foot down. There were characters who were awful but they were meant to be utter snobs, I would have relegated Mary Ann to a far away estate years ago! There were some twists I didn't expect & I was really routing for Colin & Anna but the differences seemed insurmountable
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

The Duke needed a good a&& whooping

Wow it was a very cute meet up and I loved the heroine and her breezy fun personality and I liked Colin. But then his mean Mother and her evil father totally took over the story. She wanted him to marry her choice of a bride and then the earl lied about her Mother and it broke the heroine's heart. Then the Duke dumped her and got engaged to the chosen one and I was gobsmacked! I thought why did I waste my time reading this but then, a bright light went off in his head and the ending was brilliant. All those poor workhouse women cheering when he came for her. It was awesome. The mothers change of heart was just too sudden for me and I didn't buy it. But it was good. Only kisses. No smut scenes. And they both are virgins and their first kiss was with each other. I totally loved that.

Regency. First kiss for each of the MCs: together.
IMO this story needed refining. 2 stars.

The Silverstone family & neighbors the Remingtons
had a longtime feud related to a river on both
properties which defied boundary lines.

The Silverstones were poor. They had a leaky roof,
broken windows in their cottage & insufficient food.
Beautiful Anna worked a warehouse factory loom.
Men propositioned her. Middle brother, Christian
trained horses, youngest brother Henry complained
of hunger. Eldest brother, controlling Thomas, played
up to gentry. Two of the 4 sibs. had a sire who lied.

The romance seemed a fantasy. Colin, a young duke,
drank honey wine, became bosky & met Anna. Who'd
just finished a river swim in her shift (she borrowed
his coat afterward). Colin's mother had already picked
out his bride, Lady Katherine, w/o his consent. Colin
needed some gumption. He built up promises to the h,
ironic b/c he detested liars. Colin spent one week as
Colin the man, not the duke. There were times he dis-
liked his duke role, other times he embraced his power.
This had a scene reminiscent of "An Officer and a
Gentleman."

I liked best the 2 female cousins of Colin. Jury still out
on will I read this author again?

Entertaining, romantic story of Colin Remington, the Duke of Greystoke, and the impoverished Anna Silverstone. Coming from completely different classes/worlds it seems these two don't have a chance, but they are so perfect for each other, you can't help but hope for the best for them. Loved the scene at the river (the divide between their properties and representing the divide of their upbringings). Looking forward to more in this series.

This a very special romance that was against all odds pulled through. Anna although extremely impoverished worked hard. Her hands tell the story. She has an older Brother Thomas that they share both mother and father. Two younger brothers from her stepfather. On her mother's death bed, the mother revealed a dark secret. That Anna intended somehow someway to follow-up on it knowing it would change their impoverished circumstances for the better. Her brother Thomas was a real jerk, self-absorbed but in his heart, he really believed if he dressed like a toff, spoke like a toff, he would elevate the family into gentry. Although his methods were not the best Anna trusted him. What I admired about Anna was when she was tempted to feel melancholy or critical, she turned her thoughts around to a positive outlook. I do not mean she lived in a fantasy world. But she was optimistic, down-to-earth and realistic. One would feel fortunate to be her friend. She was the type of person who really looked at life and saw the things people took for granted. A midnight swim, star gazing among other things. When she came across the Duke of Greystoke, Colin, she just thought it was another well to do man who got drunk and fell asleep at her favorite spot at the river where she would go to relax and reflect. Colin was burdened by his responsibilities and left London for the countryside to find himself, his true self. Anna showed him a side of life that he never experienced before. As they spent time together their feelings blossomed. But she was a commoner and he an aristocrat. No matter how hard Colin tried to justify his falling in love with Anna, he knew it could never be. Or could it? A wonderful story of heartbreaking romance and negative people and Colin's wicked mother. I really enjoyed reading this and do recommend it.

He was a Duke, weighted down by his responsibilities and ladies vying for his title.
She was just a hard working class lady... or was she?

As these two meet, he is enchanted by her loveliness and non pretentious manner, seeing him only as a man, not a Duke.

She is attracted to him, if only she could prove her true lineage that might make a difference.

As these two navigate the journey to their happy ending, what will happen?
Great start to a new series that I cannot wait to find out what happens next!

This is a sweet historical romance. Colin is a Duke who is looking for a respite from his many responsibilities. Anna is a young lady who despite the poverty of her circumstances retains a positive outlook on life. These two meet by chance and it puts their dreams on a collision course. Each of the characters have to find their way through the family and personal issues that are holding them hostage. Finding their true self is the key to what makes them truly happy.

Truly a work of HEART!

Wow, just Wow! This is a very different story of classes mixing and I loved it. To see Colin come to see that he was more than just a title and to see Anna fight for her dreams is such a testimony of dedication and love. There truly is a twist in this story I did not see coming and it was very gratifying to read! I loved this story and I know you will too!

Good book

Anna has a dream; that she will meet her father. Anna Silverstone dreams of escaping her life of burlap dresses and calloused fingers-brought about by hard labor at a workhouse. With all life’s luxuries at his fingertips, Colin should want for nothing, but his heart yearns for the impossible - a woman who loves him for who he is, not what he owns. WHAT A WAY TO START A NEW SERIES. The Duke Who Loved Me by Jennifer Monroe is the first book in her new series Those Regency Remingtons and I am holding my breath for book two. I found Anna and Colin’s attraction to sizzle and I truly felt their connection. I also felt this was a cross between Les Miserable and An Officer And A Gentleman. It was really a great read. The mother in this story is so very over baring, a fact of those times in the regency era trying to force a marriage. I found this book to be well written and easy to read. The characters are wonderful and the story original. Kudos Jennifer! This story has a women who has to support her family, a duke who is being forced to marry, a difference in station, a retreat from being a duke, loving cousins, depression, a trip to London, a mother’s interference, wanting to know who her father is, a selfish brother, a supportive brother, lies, wanting what you can’t have, truly loving the man himself and falling in love. But can their difference in station be overlooked? Tou will just have to read this story to find out and I am highly recommend that you do.

***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.

Jennifer Monroe’s “The Duke Who Loved Me” is Book One in the series Those Regency Remingtons is reminiscent of a Cinderella story. It’s a great start to a new series!

Colin, 9th Duke of Greystoke, pushed toward a woman he has no desire to marry, longs for nothing more than a woman who wants him for himself and not his title. With his overbearing, mother pushing him to marry and control him Colin must get away. Anna Silverstone is a lovely, impoverished young woman working her fingers to the bone but remains hopeful for the future. With a questionable lineage Anna seeks to find the truth.

With characters so clearly meant for one another, coming from two different worlds and the deck stacked so overwhelmingly high against them the author creates characters you can’t help but love and root for. This is such a well written, beautiful story, not only a love story but a story of growing into oneself and finding out who we really are in our own right.

I’ve always enjoyed Jennifer Monroe’s stories and this one was wonderful.

Thank you so much Ms. Monroe for the lovely story. I can’t wait for the rest of the series!

Good clean romance

I read book 2 before I read this book. I liked Book 2 much better. Not sure why. But I don't think the author rambled to fill pages in the second book. Anna's thoughts, already having been examined earlier, were relayed thoroughly by the author a second time while Anna traveled to London. The story itself was well thought out & ended in a great way. 2 things bothered me..1- Anna was talking to herself about the wonderful improvements to her family's life once she met her father. She mentioned never being hungry again, but then she changed that statement & said her family had never gone without food except when they missed a meal or two when finds were low. Yet she mentioned Henry only as one who complained of hunger, then at the end , she said Henry would never be hungry again. 2- was something Colin said to a businessman.."some day I'll come back & you'll beg to wait on me." I just knew that in the epilogue, that scene or a mention of it would occur. But it didn't. Otherwise, the book was enjoyable. I read a lot, so I'm probably just picky. I'm sure most readers will love this book.

This story is about Colin, a Duke, who needs to get away from his nagging mother who wants him to marry the women she has chosen. He wants to be loved for himself, Colin and not the Duke. When he goes and stays at his cousin’s house he meets Anna, who is a beautiful women born out of marriage. Anna wants to help her family’s life get better; she wants to meet the man who she thinks her father is. Colin and Anna form a sweet relationship, but being from different class will it work? This book is not just about their love, it is about Colin finding himself. At times I felt sorry for Colin, he seemed so naïve, but at times I was mad at him, how he let society thoughts rule him.
I received an ARC of this book and am giving my honest opinion.

Anna and Colin were meant to be! There are times I grew frustrated with both of them!
Anna most definitely she is very proud but definitely make it make sense! Pride never paid a bill and is definitely not warm at night but I digress!
Anna trusted her mother with the truth of her birth! At times it will be seen as a fairy story.
They are so many factors against her the least of her name! Anna Silverstone her name meant drudge and poverty!
So glad neither her name nor Colin 9th Duke of Greystoke means that who you really are! So thankful that they discovered who they were before it was too late! Love really does conquer all!
This is a part of a 3 volume “The Remingtons!”
I received an ARC copy for my unbiased opinion!

Colin is expected to marry someone of his station. His mother tries manipulating him into marriage. He wants someone who cares for him not the dukedom. Anna is a hard worker and dreams of a better life. Colin and Anna fall in love but when Colin finds out that Anna's mother was a mistress he reacts badly. Will they have triumph in their love or go separate ways? I received a complimentary copy and my review is voluntary.

Pleasant read and some good characters. As we’ve met some of the Remingtons in this story I do not find most of them very likeable. I am curious to see what they are like in future books. In this one considering the time taken in the book to develop Colin’s and Anna’s relationship I thought the ending rather rushed, and there was little or no explanation of how Anna was received once she became the Duchess, yet previously the book dwelt on all the issues there would be!

Unusual Cinderella story

This was such a beautiful, well written story showing how love overcomes seemingly impossible odds. It was a rather unusual regency romance which I really enjoyed. Colin was a very likable and again, unusual, portrayal of a duke. Anna was a strong down-to-earth character who I also liked. Beautiful ending. The only thing that spoiled it a bit for me and the reason for the lower rating, is the author's use of 'God' as an expletive. I don't like that.

The first book in the Those Regency Remingtons series a well written story that held my interest from cover to cover. Colin a Duke is unhappy with his life and takes a trip to visit cousins to find himself. When he went to sit by the river drinking he met Anna. His life changed forever. How can they overcome the problems standing between them. It is a book that I’m not sure I liked reading. So much stood between them that the happily ever after did not seem possible.

Blown grass in the wind

I loved the story of Anna and Colin, two people so different in every way, yet they found each other when they least exspected
It. Theirs is a love beyond any title or status.
It's a Cinderella fairy tale come true, for a work weary young lady who dreamed on a leave in the wind, and a young Duke who was determined to find out who Colin was.
Thank you ❤️💙

The characters are engaging and the dialog keeps you interested. However, the story is more of a farce, than a possible reality. I class this story as a fairy tale. Personally, the only Remington that I was introduced to in this story that I liked was the Duke. Every other male in this story is either a toad or is totally disgusting, especially Markus. He deserves to be neutered, along with the Earl of Leedon. This is your typical Cinderella story.

Worlds Apart Except in the Heart

Colin is a Duke whose mother is trying yo manipulate him into marriage. Anna is a poor girl in a workhouse trying to support her siblings and follow her dreams. Their relationship is always interesting, and the dynamics around them can be quite maddening. Thank goodness for happy endings.

From rags to riches romance

A lonely rich young man meets outgoing poor beauty.
After a whirlwind romance they jpurney to find her father. He turns out to be a selfish villain and denies her. Eventually after falling apart the duke realizes she is what he needs.
The hierachy of the regency era is not for him.

DNF - simplistic writing, the author tended to tell us rather than show us their personalities. H and h seemed spineless with regards to dealing with their families. Felt no connection with or real understanding of the characters.

It's who I am

This is a good story of a Duke learning to become who he was not a Duke. She's worked in a workhouse but wants much more. Both are proud of whom they have become. Well worth reading.

Ridiculously improbable...

... and full of editing gaffes. I was poised to bail early on because the premise was so ridiculous but somehow stuck it out because I hate a "DNF" rating.
