Dirty Steal is book two in the Dirty Players series by Lauren Blakely and K.D. Casey. Both of the books in this series are stand alone novellas. This one is shorter than the first. It’s a quick read. I enjoyed it but didn’t love it quite as much as the first one. I think because these two spent most of the time convincing themselves of the reasons they couldn’t be together.
Derek Miller plays for the Seattle Pilots. Adam Chason plays for the St. Louis Arches. It’s a fund raiser held during spring training when they first actually meet. They knew of each other previously but never actually interacted. There is lots of flirting and lots of innuendo, which ends in a one night stand. That little something was there between them, whispering that this could be more. But they both told themselves they needed to concentrate on the game.
Months later, Adam is traded to Derek’s team, The Pilots. And, of course, Derek’s trouble making friend pushes for Derek to let Adam stay with him in his guest room instead of a hotel. Once again, they fight the attraction, until something happens and they are forced to share a bed. There are limits to their abilities to fight the attraction and they’ve reached them. They’ve gotten to know each other better while Adam’s been staying there which only adds to their attraction. But, once again, they convince themselves that this can’t last. They play together on the same team. It just isn’t something they can take a chance on.
Both of these guys are great. I just wished there was more focus on them together than on them trying NOT to be together. Derek’s friend, Travis, was a hoot by the way. I’ve been craving baseball romances and both of these novellas helped to satisfy that need.

Every time I read a short novella, I finish it thinking that it was too short to get to know the characters, too short to feel any chemistry between the characters, and too short to get a satisfying hea... yet I keep reading short novellas for some reason ?

Another solid baseball romance from this duo
Like the first one of the series, I'd have liked more once they were sn established couple.
Unlike the first book though, this one's plot was essentially an extended "two people avoiding having a conversation about their situation".
Which, admittedly would have made it even shorter if they had talked about feelings, but it could also have been a little less frustrating with all the internal thoughts each was having.
Still, Adam snd Derek are both thoroughly likeable characters and they got there in the end!

3.5 stars? I actually really liked this, I liked the people in it and I liked the romance a lot. That's why it's a shame that this was so stupidly short. I just wish this had been a full-length novel and that it had given the characters and the relationship the time to develop that this book actually needed for it to be a satisfying story. It just felt so rushed. But I liked the people in this and I liked the writing, and it was much easier to tell these two people apart than it was in the first book of the series.

Absolutely incredible dirty talk. I got the two characters mixed up a few times — hence the .5 star deduction — but other than that I loved it.

Holy hotness! This pairing will have you not only swooning, but needing a cold shower after reading it! lol I loved it! 5 hot off the charts stars for this one!
Spring training is always an interesting time of the year, seeing your teammates, going to functions, in fact that's where I met Adam, at a charity function to raise money for rescue dogs. He's hot, but not on my radar, or is he, as I catch him checking me out. Wow!
So here Adam is at a charity function for rescue dogs, and there aren't any dogs for him to use as a buffer! He makes his way over to Derek and his friends, and they hit it off! Adam is just out of a long term relationship and not looking for anything special at the moment, and Derek seems to be looking for the same! They share a night that is amazing, and Adam takes off before Derek wakes.
Now Adam has been traded to Derek's team, talk about awkward, especially since they both play the same position, how is this going to work out, not to mention one of their teammates mentions that Derek has a spare room in his house that Adam could use till he finds a place, and wow, talk about temptation!

Having read, and quite enjoyed, Lauren Blakely's and K.D. Casey's individually written m/m baseball romances, I naturally also enjoyed this co-written novella. Buuut, I can't help but think that I would enjoy a co-written novel even more!
Dirty Steal begins lightly and rather cheekily, with two shortstops from opposing teams, Adam and Derek, indulging in a hook-up both steamy and promising. Timing is not on their side, however - at least not until Adam is traded to Derek's team. As the men become teammates and temporary roommates, their mutual attraction and connection tease and tempt.
There is a fine amount of substance for a short story: solid presence of the sport, appearances by intriguing teammates, Jewish representation through Adam, nicely increasing feels and even nicer steam. Alas, only so much can be done with limited pages. While I appreciated the story for what it was, I'm still rooting for a longer book from these two authors.

Not bad, and slightly better than book 1 IMO, but I didn't totally feel this worked well as a novella. The pacing wasn't quite right for me, and it was hard for me to really feel the longing given how compressed it was in length.

I liked this one a bit better than the first but still somewhat underdeveloped. And these confirmed that Lauren Blakely's writing isn't for me, even when it's balanced with a co-writer who I love as much as KD Casey.
Edited to add: I also don't really like the idea of their book universes overlapping, so I'm just gonna ignore that.

4.25 - 4.5 ⭐️ rounded up. Listen, if KD Casey writes it, I’m reading it. I think Dirty Steal was a stronger novella than its predecessor Dirty Slide, both in romance and plot development. Adam and Derek were very endearing characters to me and I love a “Oops! My one night stand is now my teammate” situation. My only note was that I wanted more on-field baseball scenes, but that’s a selfish thing and not really a knock on this book at all - there’s only so much you can put in 100 pages!
I also really liked the way Adam and Derek cared for each other in small ways like grabbing each other coffee, making sandwiches, and even going mattress shopping. This book was as hot as it was sweet too - they packed quite a bit of sex into a small amount of pages and I am not complaining. I recommend this to anyone who likes the authors’ solo stuff, sports romance fans or fans of the “they were roommates” trope, or those looking for something quick and spicy.

I think I liked this book more than the first one. The MCs are both professional baseball players. When they meet, they’re playing for rival teams but by chance they end up playing on the same team in the same town. It read like a novella, but it worked well. Derek and Adam are both very likeable and it was fun to watch them together. They fall in love slowly, and you can tell they really care for each other. I would read more books in this series, it’d be better if they were a bit longer.

I think I liked this one more than the first, though since I am terrible at reading the precis I figured this was a continuation of the same couple - it's not, it is a new couple. I liked how they worked together and believed their attraction even though this book was even shorter than the last. Sweet ending too. Well narrated by Evan Parker and J.F. Harding.

Suddenly they are guys on the same team who play the same position and are talked into sharing an apartment at least temporarily. It's awkward laced with sexual tension. Right from the beginning the attraction between Derek and Adam felt forced. I had a hard time getting invested in the characters and their relationship and it took me forever to get through this story. I felt like the story picked up a little after they started hooking up except All in all the "plot" did not make for a particularly exciting romance.
After reading Dirty Slide I did not have particularly high expectations from Dirty Steal, still after reading some of K.D. Casey's works I had some hope I might found the second novella more enjoyable than the first one. Alas, it wasn't the case. I have to conclude that this co-writing duo's stories just don't work for me.

Super hot and super cute sports romance featuring Derek and Adam. When we first meet them at a charity event, they are short stops on opposing baseball teams. They have a sexy one night hook up and don't see each other again for a time, but fate has other plans when Adam is traded to Derek's team and needs a place to stay. A little forced proximity, and they start rekindling that spark of what they once had. Of course through it all, they still want each other even though their situation changed. I enjoyed them getting to know each other.
As always, Derek and Adam had the perfect narrators cast to portray them. Both Even Parker and JF Harding did an amazing job with KD and Lauren's characters. JF has that sweet and shy thing going on with his performance of Adam and Evan was perfect with his growly sexy voice for Derek's commanding presence.

the fact that the st. louis team (the st. louis arches! which is such a great fake st. louis baseball name) in this novella is so bad is a personal attack and feels too much like this actual season. other than that a solid novella other than the fact i wish it was longer because i feel that way about all romance novellas.

I'm clearly just in a baseball romance (and also reading all of KD Casey's backlist) kind of mood.
This was fine. The characters were sweet. Don't know if I'll ever pick up Lauren Blakely but I'm a forever fan of KD Casey.

Above average friends to lovers story.

A well written novella about Derek and Adam, who had a one night stand (or kneel, in this case) some time ago that ended abruptly, leaving both men wanting more but scared to admit it.
When Adam is traded to Derek's team and takes his shortstop position, causing Derek to play second base, a slight tension arises. When a teammate suggests that Adam stay with Derek until he can find him own place, both men reluctantly agree.
What ensues is more than forgiveness and a few heated nights in Derek's bed, but the realization that the duo cannot continue their relationship while playing on the same baseball team. After Adam finds his own apartment and moves out, both men bury their feelings deep to concentrate on baseball.
When circumstances lead to both players requiring new mattresses, but for differing reasons, they agree to go mattress shopping together. While shopping, Derek finally admits his feelings to Adam, who returns the favor.
Realizing they both miss each other, Adam moves in with Derek at the beginning of the off-season, adding truth and permanence to their relationship.
An above average sports romance that is very well written by brilliant authors. NO editing mistakes, a trade of Lauren Blakely. A quick, yet satisfying story that warms the heart.

High 3? This felt a lot more KD Casey than the first book in this duology (which I gave up on very quickly). It's a little short and a little shallow, but it's still cute, I liked the players, and the sex scenes are hot.

This book was terribly cute! It was practically love at first sight (or love after lust at first sight). They both had the same thoughts of "why'd I go/why'd he leave" to "damn I want more" to "I shouldn't be feeling this much this fast" to "damn I messed up" to "I really like to" (spoiler. alert.).
It was fluffy and steamy and they just...clicked.

I do love a good collaboration, especially one that feels cohesive and I find it hard to know who wrote what part. Being an avid reader of LB, I can take a guess at some of her lines but I enjoyed the whole story. The thing I like most about a MM romance - there is double the hero! Everything I love about the male character in a romance is in stereo! Two times the fun!
Most ball players are cocky and confident, but Adam Chason is the shy type. He might know what he wants, but he has a hard time expressing it. Although when he puts his mind to it, he shows his flirty dirty side with his mouth and actions. As for Derek Miller, he might not be the complete opposite to Adam, but he definitely is more self assured and helps Adam articulate his desires.
Not having read the first book, I didn’t feel left out or missing any vital information, this is a total stand alone novella. Adam and Derek have an instant attraction, resulting in a one-night stand that becomes a second-chance romance when they end up on the same team and living in the same apartment. All my buttons! These two are super sexy, and the forbidden aspect of the romance just makes it hotter. They just fit together so seamlessly until everything else just fades away into blissfully seggsy hawtness!

June 24, 2024I only picked this up because it had KD Casey's name on it, but the writing was terrible, which leads me to believe she only, like, looked at it. Her own stuff is leagues better.
