Γκερμελσχάουζεν: Μια παράξενη ιστορία
Ένας νεαρός ρομαντικός ζωγράφος στη Γερμανία του 19ου αιώνα χάνεται πεζοπορώντας σε ένα δάσος. Εκεί, «ως δια μαγείας» συναντά μια πανέμορφη κοπέλα και μαγνητίζεται από το βλέμμα της. He was the son of Friedrich Gerstäcker (1790–1825), a celebrated opera singer. After being apprenticed to a commercial house, he learnt farming in Saxony. In 1837, however, just younger than 21 and having imbibed from Robinson Crusoe a taste for adventure, he went to America and wandered over a large part of the United States, supporting himself by whatever work came to hand. He became fireman on a steamboat, deck hand, farmer, silversmith, and merchant. After wandering through most of the United States, spending some time as a hunter and trapper in the Indian territory, and in 1842 keeping a hotel at Point Coupée, Louisiana, he returned to Germany six adventurous years later in 1843.
To his great surprise, he found himself famous as an author. His mother had shown his diary, which he regularly sent home, and which contained descriptions of his adventures in the New World, to the editor of the Rosen, who published them in that periodical. These sketches having found favour with the public, Gerstäcker issued them in 1844 under the title Streif- und Jagdzüge durch die Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika. In 1845 his first novel, Die Regulatoren in Arkansas, appeared marking the start of a successful writing career. Henceforth the stream of his productiveness flowed on uninterruptedly.
From 1849 to 1852 Gerstäcker travelled round the world, visiting North and South America, Polynesia and Australia. He experienced the California gold rush, crossed the South Pacific on a whaler, and wandered through Australia and experienced a "gold rush" there. On his return to Germany, he settled in Leipzig.
In 1860 he again went to South America, chiefly with a view to inspecting the German colonies there and reporting on the possibility of diverting the stream of German emigration in this direction. The result of his observations and experiences he recorded in Achtzehn Monate in Südamerika (1862). In 1862 he accompanied Duke Ernest of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Egypt and Abyssinia, and on his return settled at Coburg, where he wrote a number of novels descriptive of the scenes he had visited.
In 1867-1868 Gerstäcker again undertook a long journey, visiting North America, Venezuela and the West Indies. He visited Mexico right after the collapse of the Second Mexican Empire, a situation about which he wrote a few passages in one of his books. On his return lived first at Dresden and then at Brunswick. While preparing for a journey to India, China and Japan, he suffered a fatal cerebral haemorrhage on May 31, 1872.
The widely traveled adventurer left an oeuvre of 44 volumes, which he edited himself for his Jena publisher H. Costenoble. His stories and novels inspired numerous imitators: Karl May profited from him and used landscape descriptions as well as subjects and characters. Even theatre and movie companies borrowed from his work: the plot of the musical Brigadoon (1954) was adapted from Gerstäcker's short story Germelshausen.

Germelshausen ένα θαμμένο στα αμύθητα χρόνια της λησμονιάς χωριό, εκεί που οι άδειες ψυχές και οι φρικιαστικές ορδές της φήμης του χορεύουν κάθε 100 χρόνια τον πρώτο και τον τελευταίο χορό της νεκρής ύπαρξης τους.
Καταραμένο μέρος ή χαμένο παραμύθι που έρχεται στο νου και γίνεται πραγματικότητα μέσα στη θολή απέραντη ιστορία του.
Μπορείς εκεί να χορέψεις όταν δεν χτυπάει η ραγισμένη κακόηχη καμπάνα της εκκλησιάς του αλλά πριν έρθει το «αύριο» πρέπει να καταλάβεις πως χάνονται έρωτες και αγάπες, λύπες και χαρές, δάκρυα και γέλια , ύμνοι και μοιρολόγια, άνθρωποι που κάποτε έζησαν και τώρα ξαναζούν για λίγες ώρες μέχρι να χαθούν και πάλι στην κατάρα της λήθης.
Ξαφνικά ανοίγει η καταπακτή της αβύσσου και του ανυποχώρητου χρόνου και ρουφάει μέσα της όλο το χωριό βάζοντας κατόπιν σαν σκέπασμα βάλτους και βρομερά έλη από τις ψυχικές αποφορές και τα λησμονημένα χρόνια.
Καλή ανάγνωση.
Πολλούς και σεμνούς ασπασμούς.

I picked a 1927 copy of this short story up at a bookstore as German practice, excited to discover that it had a vocab list and notes in the back (yay!). Such a fun, faintly creepy story about a traveler encountering a mysterious (and, as one may fairly quickly surmise, cursed) village. According to Wikipedia, a critic claimed that the plot of "Brigadoon" had been lifted from Gerstäcker's short story, and the similarities are undoubtedly pronounced; the writer of the script, though, claimed the musical wasn't taken from Germelshausen, but rather that the story of a village cursed to reappear every hundred years is a widespread one. Anyway, this made for a fun lesson in (older) German. Some of it is quite clever, and I liked the faint element of horror that is lacking from a more lighthearted incarnation like "Brigadoon": the dancing scene, for instance, has a bit of a dark fairytale element that just felt deliciously creepy. And it's got some humorous bits too, like Arnold's attempt to read the dates on the gravestones and his exchange with the hunter. There are elements I wanted to know more about -- the fate of Gertrude's Heinrich; the supposed dispute with the pope -- but I guess that's what a good short story does...

This is a lovely short story written by a German author of the nineteenth century who travelled to America and Australia. The story is set in a little village in his native Germany, which a traveller stumbles across by accident. But is there something wrong with this idyllic place?

Μικρό και θαυματουργό, μόλις 66 σελίδες, η ιστορία του Φρειδερίκου Γκέρσταικερ, μας δίνει μια μικρή γεύση, κλασικής, γερμανικής, σκοτεινής λογοτεχνίας, με αρκετά γκόθικ στοιχεία, που παραπαίει ανάμεσα στο θρίλερ και τον τρόμο.
Ο ήρωας του συγγραφέα, ένας νεαρός ζωγράφος, έχει την τύχη ή την ατυχία, να χαθεί σε μία από τις περιπλανήσεις του, για να σωθεί ως εκ θαύματος, από μια πολύ όμορφη κοπέλα. Λίγο το θλιμμένο παρουσιαστικό της, τα γλυκά λόγια της και το βλέμμα της που τον μαγνητίζει σε κάθε ματιά, αποφασίζει να την ακολουθήσει στο μικρό μα παράξενο χωριό της. Τυφλωμένος από τα βέλη του έρωτα, θα δεχτεί να συμμετάσχει στην ετήσια εκδήλωση του χωριού, αγνοώντας όλα τα προειδοποιητικά σημάδια και τα μισόλογα των χωρικών. Το αν θα βγει ζωντανός από αυτό το ζοφερό χωριό, θα το μάθετε όταν διαβάσετε το μικρό αυτό βιβλιαράκι.
Ένα από τα πρώτα συστατικά αυτής της ιστορίας, που τραβάει αμέσως τον αναγνώστη είναι ο τρόπος με τον οποίο ο συγγραφέας έχει πλέξει το ρομαντικό ύφος με εκείνο του τρόμου και της αγωνίας. Από την στιγμή που ο ζωγράφος πατήσει το πόδι του, σε αυτό το αινιγματικό χωριό, τα πάντα θα πάρουν μια πιο παράξενη τροπή. Και παρόλο που ο συγγραφέας μας δίνει αρκετές πληροφορίες και μας προϊδεάζει για το τι επρόκειτο να επακολουθήσει, το μυστήριο και η αγωνία κορυφώνονται μέχρι και την τελευταία σελίδα, όπου μαθαίνουμε το νόημα πίσω από τα λόγια και τις μπηχτές των χωρικών, τις παράξενες εξηγήσεις της νεαρής κοπέλας και το διαβολικό μυστικό που πλανάται πάνω από το χωριό Γκέρμελσχαουζεν.
Η αλήθεια είναι ότι στεναχωρήθηκα λίγο για την κατάληξη του ζωγράφου και της κοπέλας, ωστόσο απόλαυσα την μικρή και παράξενη αυτή ιστορία από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος. Δώστε του μια ευκαιρία. Διαβάζετε πάρα πολύ γρήγορα και θα σας κρατήσει το ενδιαφέρον, μέχρι και την τελευταία παράγραφο.

Ein schönes kleines Buch. Die über 150 Jahre alte Geschichte ist nett zu lesen und wird in den nach Worten gut erklärt. Letztlich macht es Lust, weitere Werke des Autors zu ergründen.
