It would be self serving to review my own book, so instead I will include this lovely note from my mother: "Started your book and now can't put it down!...As your mom, I was scared to death I would not like it."

Seriously, thank you everyone who took the time to read book 2 in the Detective by Day series. I really appreciate it.

In this 2nd book in the 'Detective by Day' series, private detective Dayna Anderson investigates when a Hollywood publicist is killed. The book can be read as a standalone.

*****

In the first book in the series, called Hollywood Homicide, pretty black actress Dayna Anderson lost her job as the face of "Chubby's Chicken" commercials and needed a new source of income.

So - when money was offered for information about a hit-and-run killer - Dayna partnered up with private detective Aubrey S. Adams-Parker to investigate. Dayna eventually got a reward for calling the police hotline with a good tip, and a new PI was born.

Dayna now needs another big score to pay her bills and gets right on the job when Lyla Davis - a celebrity publicist for the Silver Sphere Organization - is shot and killed. A reward is offered for information leading to Lyla's killer, and Dayna means to get it.

Dayna soon becomes convinced Lyla's death was a hit, and makes it her business to find out who hired the killer. Initally, Dayna's attention is drawn to Silver Sphere employees and the clients they represent.

Dayna also looks into an anonymous gossip blogger called 'Anani Miss.'

Anani Miss exposes celebrity secrets, and has published a jaw-dropping teaser about a Silver Sphere client.....with promises to tell the whole story soon. Dayna is sure Anani Miss has an informant, and she's determined to discover who it is.

Dayna is certain her peripatetic investigation will eventually expose Lyla's murderer.

As Dayna is making her inquiries, she gets help from her partner Aubrey and her two best friends, Sienna - a fashionista who's semi-famous for her umpteen Instagram selfies;

And Emme - a computer nerd who's adept at hacking.

In the course of her inquiries, Dayna snoops around Silver Sphere; tries to discover the true identity of Anani Miss; uncovers a blackmail scheme; meets a Hollywood fixer; sneaks around a sensory deprivation tank; attends a swag giveaway party; and more.

While all this is going on, Silver Sphere is preparing its annual awards show, called Silver Sphere Awards. It so happens that Dayna's boyfriend - TV star Omari Grant - is nominated for best actor, and there's great excitement surrounding the event.

Omari's publicist Nina is doing her best to further her client's chances of winning. Thus, Nina drags Omari to innumerable promotional events and spreads the word that he's involved with a famous actress named Toni Abrams.

The fake 'Tomari' romance annoys Dayna no end, and her attempts to fix the problem cause all manner of trouble.

Meanwhile, Dayna's pursues her investigation into Lyla's death, and hits on one suspect after another. Determined to get the reward money, Dayna calls the police hotline every time she identifies a new 'killer.'

The constant calls lead to sarcastic comments from the person that answers the hotline, which is very amusing. In fact most of Dayna's antics are good for a laugh, and the entire novel is filled with humor.

On the downside, the story is over-complicated, there are too many similar characters, and Dayna's shenanigans get repetitive. These quibbles aren't deal-breakers though, and I enjoyed the book overall.

I was so excited to see another book in this fun series, Dayna is an out of work spokesperson for a fast-food chain, but she's liberated herself from all the dieting and the other junk that goes along with being an actress.
Her true niche in LA is being an investigator, she got lucky last year with solving a few crimes. She has the LA tip line programmed on her I-Phone that's how she's making a living these days.
It's award season in Hollywood and her boyfriend and his series are up for the biggest award for television, The Silver Sphere Award. Her boyfriend's publicist is doing everything in her power to keep Dayna out of the works, they have a mutual dislike for one another but she's more than happy for her boyfriend.
There is a murder after the awards that opens up pandora's box regarding some major players in the Hollywood.
Dayna is found in some laugh out loud situations trying to find out who the really murdered this somewhat meek and mild publicist, unlike the tiger who ruthlessly represents her boyfriend. This case has Dayna going in so many directions and along with her good friends and Uber, she's not going to give up until she gets to the bottom of this box that's been popped open.
The witty dialog between Dayna and her friends plus her zany inconveniences such as her problem with passwords and other things that makes us all CRAZY makes me think that Dayna Anderson and Kellye Garrett are one and the same. She's a hoot and well worth getting to know.
I would like to thank Midnight Ink and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this galley in exchange for my honest review.

If you are looking for an entertaining and very modern detective story with a smart but still not totally together African American female investigator the Detective by Day series is one that I would highly recommend picking up. Dayna Anderson is very much the millennial finding her way in the world, but she still feels relatable and likable. I'm am so looking forward to being on the journey of her developing her talents and becoming more secure in her abilities. There are only two books so far and I am already invested in these characters. I'm looking forward to the next case!

I did not expect to like this sequel as much as the original but I may have liked it even more. Dayna has come into her own as a heroine and she's funnier than ever. Dayna's life has changed since we last met with her. She's now dating Omari and has taken on some smaller cases since solving her first. But she's growing bored and ready to expand her new business, When Silver Screen Organization publicist Lyla is murdered Dayna decides to take on the case. Solving the case is rather easy or so it appears until Dayna is ready to collect her reward money and join Omari and Sienna at the award ceremony. Dayna is very much the bumbling amateur at times, still continuously making rookie mistakes. However her quick wit is endearing and her colorful cast of associates keep things interesting. There's characters like Nina who you'll despise with a passion, Sienna the sometimes ditzy best friend who always has her back, Emme who is living in her own online world, and the chill and serious Omari among others. For those who like their mysteries with alot of laughs Hollywood Ending is must!

I received an early release copy of this book, and dug into it as soon as I could. I loved Hollywood Homicide, and had high expectations for Hollywood Ending. The book met my expectations! Dayna Anderson, "retired" actress and now apprentice PI, is dating one of Hollywood's newest A-listers. When he narrowly misses being the victim of a fatal mugging, Dayna is drawn into the case. Besides, she's been doing okay on the PI front. When she learns the victim is also the person behind one of the most followed online gossips, she follows the trail to a celebrity whose secret will end their career. Dayna tries to track down who would kill to keep their secrets, all during the chaos that accompanies a Hollywood awards show. Publicists, gossips, celebrities--they all have motives, but who did it? This book keeps the reader guessing until the end.

“Hollywood Ending” by Kellye Garrett is written as a first person narrative by Dayna Anderson aspiring actor and up-and-coming private investigator. Readers get to know her well in the first few pages.
“You’d probably cast me in a group of black friends getting together for a fun vacation movie. I’d play the cute, annoyingly sweet girl currently dating the object of the main character’s affections.”

The story starts with a series of encounters that explain what she is doing. “I’m here for the freaking reward money from the LAPD. I’m not a snitch and I’m not an actor. I’m a private investigator.” Of course, an apprentice former cop turned-investigator Aubrey S. Adams-Parker apprentice, but an investigator nonetheless. She was serious about becoming an investigator and was anxious to work her way up in the profession. Of course, needing money, she checks the LAPD Crime Stoppers tip line page for new cases. If there was a reward, she had a case.

The tone of Dayna’s narrative is irreverent and casual, and it reflects her devil may care attitude. Underneath that superficial public persona is someone who really cares about her friends. Every page is filled with Hollywood geography, people characters, and attitude. The paparazzi, social media, and “show biz” are shown at their best and worst. Only in a book about Hollywood, would there be a red-carpet celebrity tour bus and swag bags as clues.

I received a copy of “Hollywood Ending” from Kellye Garrett, Midnight Ink and NetGalley. I know show business has a sordid side, but it can also be hysterically funny. The pace is quick, and there is never a dull moment with Dayna Anderson on the case. Sometimes one just needs a book with laughs to go along with the crime and murder.

Kellye Garrett’s second novel in the Detective by Day series, is a light-hearted and hilarious look into the land of make believe, that takes itself way too seriously.
Dayna Anderson, retired actress and current private investigator, has returned with her friends in tow. There’s Sienna, her roommate who’s always ready for her close up. Emme, beautiful hacker and agoraphobe. Aubrey, the ex-cop Dayna's apprenticing under, and her new boyfriend, Omari, now a star on a hit tv show.
Not much has changed, Dayna is still flat broke. That’s why she’s determined to get her fledgling detective business off the ground. Though this time she's seeking a less violent case. At least she was, until a publicist got murdered. Dayna throws herself into what looks like a wrong place, wrong time homicide, and easily solves it. That’s when the problems start.
The trail to catch a killer leads Dayna into A-list events, studio sets, and the wrong hotel room. Here secrets are sold to the highest bidder and people literally kill to keep them hidden.

Kellye Garrett has done it again. I didn’t think she could out-do her first book, but sure enough, she handled it with no problem.
Again, she had me laughing out loud in places where people stare if you make a peep. But it was so worth it.

The Review
The Characters
Dayna Anderson has grown quickly in this series. How in the world is she trying to fake people into believing she is a PI? Because she’s a former actress, that’s why. She created a persona that can be cracked, but she knows how to talk her way out of it. She is what this diyhomegoddess would want to be like.
Omari Grant has made a name for himself in this one. He is becoming a stronger character, with just enough wit, self-centeredness, and strength to play second fiddle to Dayna, instead of the standard cozy, which makes the romance connection part of the investigative team. Good for you Kellye Garrett!
Aubrey Adams-Parker acts like the PI who wants anonymity. He’s definitely no LT. Colombo, he’s more of an invisible man, who figures things out, but no one seems to know he’s the one who did it.
Danya’s besties, Sienna and Emme are becoming stronger in this particular book. We are getting more information into what their particular skills are. And I like it.
The secondary characters are definitely an interesting crew. Each one is totally different from the other. And what you anticipate them to do is not what happens on the page. Damn those twists!
I love these characters!

The Setting Descriptions
I love the way Kellye Garrett describes the scenes. You can tell she’s been there. There’s nothing made up here, unless she’s creating a fake company. The sounds of the city are right. The reactions of people are right.
When it comes to the Hollywood parties, you get transported to the place, and forget you are reading. I can feel the presence of the snobs, the gawkers, the photographers, the clothes.
And SWAG (Stuff We All Get), playing an integral part in the story, is amazing. I’ve seen articles about SWAG, she’s not making up what goes in those bags!

The Dialogue
The dialogue is funny as hell. Things coming from the characters’ mouths are not expected. The banter is quick and witty. What the characters say to get out of their situations is funny, especially if it doesn’t get the expected reaction from another character.

The Pace
The pace of the story is almost near perfect. There are breathers, and yet there are parts where it gets intense. Nothing seems in the wrong part of the book. There is no jumping around, wondering, “wait, how did we get here?”
This is an art that authors need to learn, and Kellye Garrett learned quickly.

The Plot
The plot is well done. It moves along, and the subplots in place don’t detract from the main story. But the subplots feel like they belong there, they aren’t there just to add words to the novel. She uses the characters in innovative ways to move the plot along. You think they are stuck in situations, and all of a sudden they are out, and it makes sense how they get out.
There are red herrings galore, and yet there are clues that make you wonder what is real and what is a plant.
Let me tell you, I knew who the killer was from the get go. I knew I had it. I never changed my mind throughout the entire story, like I usually do. And then about 8 pages from the end of the book, she revealed the killer. And damn, I was totally wrong! The killer made sense once the reveal was complete, but I honestly thought I had it! Read this fast paced novel, now!

If you're wondering if the follow-up to last year's multi-award-winning HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE will live up to its predecessor, the answer is a definite YES. Just as funny with endearing characters, good character development, and an engrossing mystery that I did not guess the ending to (a situation that's becoming less and less common). I especially appreciate the supportive friendship between three women that never turns catty or involves falling out over silly reasons. I could use much more of this in the books I read. In short, highly recommended!

I was so excite to see the sequel to the frequently nominated and so far Agatha winner Hollywood Homicide. Author Kellye Garrett has a unique style and it is one that works SO well. Hollywood Ending had me rolling with laughter but has an intelligent plot. I can so relate to Dayna which is a bit surprising when you consider how different we are. She is so adorable and but she is also smart enough that she actually takes time to think things through instead of diving into trouble blindly…well, most of the time. I didn’t get as much of a feel for secondary characters as I did in Hollywood Homicide but I still enjoyed the time I spent with them.
Ex-actress Dayna Anderson has passed her 15 minutes of fame as a commercial actress and is not working to earn her private investigator license under an ex-police detective, talk about unique! It would sure help if he had his license, oops. Her first case brought in a nice bit of change but cases that she can handle have been a little thin so when a Hollywood blogger is murdered at an ATM, she figures that this one will be a breeze, witness, camera, what could be easier? Naturally nothing is easy but Dayna is not one to give up; she likes to eat too much.
Thanks to NetGalley and Midnight Ink for the chance to jump into this ARC! I love Dayna and Hollywood Endings and look forward to seeing what she gets into next time.

I love this series about former actor and PI-in-training Dayna Anderson. She knows her former business and the ways of publicists, agents, actors and the various other people involved in the entertainment machine in Los Angeles.
Dayna gets involved after a junior publicist is murdered, and she begins interviewing possible suspects and unearths a lot of secrets, and yes, a murderer too. Her car keeps letting her down throughout, and meanwhile Aubrey is dragging his feet on getting a PI license.
Dayna makes fewer investigative mistakes, and her instincts are often right as she (with her friends' occasional help) gets to the truth. (I had a sneaky suspicion about the killer early on, and was pleased I figured out who it was.)
But, the biggest reason I read this and the previous book in this series is Dayna. She's a regular-sized woman in a city where size 2s are seen as big, who has great attitude, smarts and humour. In fact, this had me laughing out loud while on a walk:
If this was a heist movie, the Silver Sphere offices would be secured three floors underground in an airless chamber guarded by a feral unicorn with a Rambo-approved knife as a horn. The only way I’d be able to get in would be using an air vent, some dental floss, and an entire can of unicorn repellent I’d bought off eBay. But it wasn’t.
I dearly hope Kellye Garrett writes more in this fun series.

It’s awards season in Hollywood and actress turned PI Day Anderson is celebrating when her boyfriend, Omari, is nomination for the Silver Sphere Award. However, after one of the parties he has to attend to mingle with the judges, Lily Davis is murdered. Lily was a publicist for the Silver Sphere Awards, and they have offered a reward for information leading to the arrest of her killer, so naturally Day jumps in to solve the case. This one seems much easier than her first murder case. Is she missing something?

Of course, she is, and the book soon involves plenty of complications that kept me reading as fast as I could. There are some fun twists before we reach the climax. Day and all her friends are back, and I loved spending more time with them and seeing how their relationships have changed. I also really enjoy the insider’s look at life in the Hollywood world. Everything is brought together by humor that had me laughing and smiling the entire way through the book. Those who loved the first book will be equally delighted with this one. And if you haven’t started this series yet, you need to do so today.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book.

This was so much fun and exactly what my brain needed this week. Garrett's wry look at Tinseltown mayhem through the eyes of Dayna, her wise-ass, social-media-savvy actress-turned-private eye narrator, is such a delightful update on the trope. I was laughing the whole way through.

I received an early copy to provide my honest review.

This book is like putting on your favourite comfy sweatshirt. It makes you feel comfy and at home. I came across the first book in the series by Kellye during a book launch party for another author. I read an excerpt which had me laughing and knew I needed that book right away. It jumped to the top of my list and when I found out she had another one and that I had to wait to read it I couldn't believe it. Then I was able to get an advance copy that hadn't been edited and loved every minute of it. The characters were like old friends I was reuniting with like no time had passed. I could still remember what happened in the last book and found the pace matched the previous book. This was a book I wanted to finish because it was so fun to read but at the same time I didn't want it to finish too soon because I loved it that much. If you're looking for a fun read that throws curve balls at you while making you laugh and helps you forget your own bad days then this is the book for you. I have this book in my wish list so when I launches I can buy it in paperback. Sad to say bye for now to Dayna but I know I'll see her again.

I was a bit disappointed in this book. It started out fun with all the modern social media references with texting, blogging, and celebrity lifestyles, but it quickly became old. The mystery was very light as well - the person I suspected early in the book (because of Doylist logic) was actually the guilty party. I’m fine with that if the characters, setting, or other elements of the book hold my interest, but that didn’t happen for this one.

On the plus side, the book seemed well written / edited- there were no errors that pulled me out of the story as there are sometimes.

It wasn’t my cup of tea, so to speak, but I think someone who enjoys following the Hollywood Lifestyle, life on the red carpet, and keeping up with the latest celebrity gossip would love it!

Goodreads ain’t StoryGraph so here we go. My rating is a 3.75 at this time. I am going to think on it some more and may come back and change it. Dayna is one of my favorite detectives/sleuths. I hope this series continues. I just love that this book is written or reads “black folks I see you.” Often times, detectives and sleuths aren’t relatable because I don’t see myself culturally but Day never disappoints.

The natural humor is my favorite part about Day and her steadfast energy for solving crimes. I can’t wait to for more releases of this series.

Also, this book is a perfect example of be careful what you say in a Uber, Lyft, or driving services, you never know how that will turn out. It could be deadly.

Hollywood Ending is the second book in the Day Detective series and I enjoyed this book as much as the first one. Dayna has found her footing as a budding Private Investigator solving small cases and her personal life has come full circle as she and Omari are now in a relationship. I like that Dayna is learning her new profession and makes mistakes as she learns. She is intelligent, compassionate, and quick witted. I even loved her sort of ditzy but endearing friends. I look forward to more of Dayna's adventures.

Hmmm... it started quite interesting -- a publicist was murdered during a botched robbery attempt , Dayna tried to find out who did it, and instead she found out that the publicist was moonlighting as . But after hitting around half mark, I began to lose interest.

The only explanation I can offer is that maaaaybeee I didn't really care about the victim at all. Or the scandal surrounding the people involved, which included some famous Hollywood names. I guess it's getting old for me quick. Or I prefer mystery that deals with non-famous people...

I also thought that Dayna didn't really learn a lot from the first book; she confronted possible blackmailer slash murderer face-to-face. Like she didn't understand how dangerous the plan was. I don't have enough patience for that kind of stupidity.

I'm still giving it a three because it's not completely a failure for me; it's passable as my 'okay' category. However, I'm not sure I'll be checking out the next book *shrugs*

This series is just so fun! It is light, hilarious, and a nice escape from the everyday into semi-glamorous L.A. I love the very relatable main character and her zany friends. While I felt like I saw some things coming before Dana, I kind of like that she's not a Sherlock Holmes type super-brain but just a regular girl trying to make a buck solving crimes. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Bahni Turpin who may be my favourite narrator of all time and she could not be more perfect for Dana and this story. She adds so much character and expression that I can't imagine just reading the unadorned text, although I'm sure that's great too!

This is a solid, semi-cozy mystery series with a great voice actor and an entertaining cast of regular characters. Lots of fun, and dependably paced to keep you going to the end. I'm not into Hollywood gossip or reality tv, but that does nothing to keep me from enjoying Dayna's unceasing pursuit of fame - and/or reward money.

Enjoyed the second book featuring the charming and funny, Dayna Anderson, a retired actress turned P.I. Her antics as a private investigator seem to get her into all kinds of crazy situations, but her pluckiness seems to always get her back on her feet. As a movie and TV junkie, having Hollywood as a backdrop is just icing on the cake.

In the second book of the series we get to spend more time with all the fun, relatable characters from the first (Hollywood Homicide). I like the fact that the characters seem real, not superhuman or stereotypical, and the mystery in this one is a little more tightly written. I look forward to seeing the character, and the series, develop.

#2, now I can't wait for #3 and yes, I believe Kellye is going to write another one. Main people are all there, Dayna, Omari, Emme, Sienna, Abrey S. Adams-Parker. Omari is black with muscles and dimples, cute. Dayna lives in Sienna's bloset. Dayna's nickname is Boop. She used "Molly, you in danger, girl." Not the one I use from GHOST, lolol. And "Help a sister out." The VOICE. Omari doesn't like public display of affection. Page 157 . . . Ugh, Omari and his male logic that managed to be clueless and make perfect sense at . . . See, cute, you will love this book!
