Medium Trouble #2

Ghost of Truth

Rate this book
Hiro
When I first realized that I could see the dead, I never imagined that it would allow me to help save the lives of others and pull me into Detective Maddox Booker’s path. Through my ability, ghosts have become some of my greatest friends and allies.

But now, someone’s dead and his ghost is gone. Ghosts have sought my help for my entire life, wanting to be heard, but something is keeping them quiet, almost hostile as our search for the ghost of the dead man leads us to a small village. Even though everything looks normal on the outside, I’m starting to wonder what’s happening on the inside.

Maddox
Life is better than it’s ever been. Hiro’s by my side and has brought my best friend Reggie back into my life—if we can consider Reggie’s harassment (even as a ghost) a positive. And even Hiro’s horde of ghosts won’t keep me from asking him to move in with me. The only issue is that work is never quiet, especially when Hiro is able to dive into a whole new side of a case by speaking to the victims of the dead.

But when someone takes Hiro from me in the middle of the night, I know that I will do absolutely anything to get him back, and I will make them pay for what they’ve done.

Ghost of Truth is full of action, mystery, humor, and romance. Though more is planned for this couple, the mystery is solved and there is a happy ending.

Second read: I maintain that the plot could have been better near the end. The explanation made sense, but at the same time, it felt flimsy and shallow. It doesn't feel like we've had closure.

_______________________

I still went back and forth between the audiobook and the Kindle for this one, and I enjoyed the narrator once again. 😊

I think it’s a part of this life, Maddox. We’re able to save people because we’re able to take risks. We’re able to fight to save others, even if it means that sometimes we have to fight to stay alive.”

When people die but leave no ghosts, Hiro knows something is not right. Other people are having memory loss, and even people Hiro sees often are starting to act strange and even in a threatening way. Hiro gets himself into even more trouble in this second book, and poor Maddox seems on the verge of having a heart attack daily because Hiro just runs head-first into dangerous situations.

The plot in this second book was more complex and even a little confusing at times. I caught on the whole “possession” part fairly early in the book, and we understand the "who" and the "why" at the end of this book, but the "how" felt a little all over the place at times. I knew that the different pieces were somehow all connected, but I just couldn't figure out how they all fit together (and neither could Hiro and Maddox), until the very end, and when the last major piece was revealed, I found myself not 100% on board with the explanation. Overall it makes sense and it's well constructed, but some details are still weird and a little unclear to me. On the other hand, the ghosts around Hiro are becoming stronger, which makes things more interesting (and entertaining).

Hiro and Maddox have a steady and strong relationship in this book, so there is less push and pull between them, but there are more sweet and tender moments, and while I adore books with budding romances or (kind of) hate-to-love relationship, I also really enjoy seeing a couple that I like being strong and relying on each other. This book allowed me to see the strength of Hiro and Maddox’s couple.

“We’re going to have to have a talk because this throuple shit is starting to feel more like a couple and less like a throuple,” Reggie says with his arms folded over his chest.
“We’re not a throuple.”
“What’s a throuple?” Maddox asks.
“Tell him it’s what we are when you wake up sandwiched between the two of us,” Reggie says. “You like it, don’t you? Smooshed between two ridiculously hot men.”
“It’s a disease,” I tell Maddox. “It starts by making you feel icky all the time, and then you start hearing this squeaky voice that assaults your ears and—”
Maddox nods as he looks over at me. “Ah, so Reggie but in disease form.”

“Both at the same time.”
“I wanna do both of you at the same time too,” Reggie says as he pops into the back seat.
“And I wanna watch,” Natalie says, appearing beside him.
“Yay, the back seat just turned into a shitshow,” I declare so Maddox can be aware of my pain.

Hiro and Maddox are still being harassed by pesky ghosts, mostly Nathalie and Reggie, but I have to say that the two ghosts tried (and managed) to be more useful in this book. They were still hilarious and sexually obsessed at times, but they also managed to help Maddox and Hiro, and we could feel that they wanted to be involved in the investigation so that they could keep both men safe. They have this "found family" vibe that I adore, and I wouldn't mind getting more of this crazy group of misfit ghosts and people.

“Why does Maddox put up with all of this from you? I used to have a lot of respect for him as a detective. He works hard, he’s extremely intelligent, and he’s phenomenal at what he does. Yet he falls for this conman shit you have going on? Is it just so he can get laid?”
“Definitely. During my teenage years I learned that the only way to hook people and get them to screw you was by claiming to see dead people. The moment I start preaching about dead people, men fall all over me instead of thinking I’m strange, a liar, or have some type of underlying illness. I mean, it got me Maddox, after all,” I say as dryly as I can.
“Ooh, burn, bitch, burn,” Reggie yells.

Keaton is a new character that was introduced in this book, and while I didn't like him at all at first (I don't think anyone is meant to like him at first actually), I LOVED how he unknowingly pushed Reggie and Hiro to create an alliance against him. Seeing Reggie allying with Hiro instead of bullying him and insulting him was heartwarming. We knew that he had a soft spot for him, but now we can see it. It's a case of "nobody is allowed to insult you and bully you but me", and I love how it turned out.

That’s the moment something slams against the window. I squeeze Maddox’s hand harder than I should as I leap in my seat. “Motherfucker,” I hiss as Spite, my ghost raven, flaps against the windshield like he can’t remember that he’s a fucking ghost that can go through walls.
“Did I just hit Reggie?” Maddox asks. “Please tell me I just hit Reggie.”
The sadistic side of me grins.

“Hiro!” Reggie yells, making me glance over at him. “Don’t be alarmed, but you are in the presence of a dick. When faced with a dick you must first back away slowly. If the dick tries to follow, you must use all force necessary. I will find you a weapon.” He rushes forward to a desk with a snow globe on it. “Might I recommend a snow globe for bludgeoning power?” He disappears and reappears on the other side next to a stapler. “A stapler for torture?” And then he’s back on the other side of the room. “Or simply a pen to stab with?”

Reggie truly is a hilarious character. While some parts of this book were more stressful, or even darker, Reggie and Nathalie were always there to make us laugh and bring their daily dose of ridicule.

While I did not enjoy this book as much as the first one, I still liked it a lot, and I can't wait to see what awaits Hiro, Maddox, and their eclectic group next. Yes they have juvenile humor and they make a lot of sexual jokes, but I just love it. Alice Winter's books are guilty pleasures for me.

This is my life. This is likely how I’m going to die. Half naked, lubed up, and with a bloody nose.
“You alright?” Maddox asks.
“Yep, splendid. I just wanted to caress the wall with my face before I never see it again,” I say as I push myself back up before wiping away the blood.

Let me start by saying Alice Winters is one of my favourite authors. Her books are must reads for me and number amongst some of my all time favourites. I read (and re-read) and loved Ghost of Lies, I adored all the characters especially Reggie.

Which brings me to Ghost of Truth. It’s the same fabulous characters plus some new ones, same crazy humour but…
I liked it (well parts of it) but I struggled. I think it comes down to the fact that I just didn’t like the story. It didn’t hold my attention, I found myself skimming and struggling at times to continue. I’m gutted, absolutely gutted I’ve looked forward to this book for ages.

But it’s looking like it’s probably me not the book. All the other reviews are great so it’s just me swimming against the tide 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hopefully I’ll like the next one more.

Reread/Relisten #3 December 2024

To me this one dragged a little bit in the middle, but that is due to the fact I want to rush to the end so I can read book 4 ASAP! Overall still a great addition to the series, and I love all these characters so much!

Reread/Relisten #2 April 2024

I always forget how fun this series is! haha And you have Greg B narrating, it's just a win win!

What a rush!

This series just keeps getting better and also even more outrageous.

I love the relationship between Hiro and Maddox, which is supported by the bonkers nature of their friendship with their bunch of ghost best friends.

It's almost impossible to guess what the outcome of events will be, well for me anyway, and I find myself simply going with the flow as things get even crazier.

I did tear up a little bit with this one as Maddox and his dead best friend, the overly confident king of inappropriate sass Reggie, had a heart to heart about why he hadn't passed over yet.

No clue where book three will go but I can't wait to find out!

Alice Winters' books are so addictive. Ghost of Truth has great relationship development between Hiro and Maddox; another addition to the 'imaginary friends' ghost squad; an engaging mystery, set in a small town with major creepy vibes.

I think it's safe to say that this is now my favourite series from Alice Winters.

The audio kept the 5 stars

5 stars purely because I cried at the end.
Seriously, it isn't often that I become so emotionally invested in characters that they make me cry.
This one is a little more convoluted than the first book and less silly too. It really made me think about it at the end, which is all I can say without spoilers.
Hiro and Maddox have settled into their relationship so there's less drama there but I love them together. I really like books with established relationships.
There's some steam but not a lot.
Ghosts, Natalie and Reggie, are still about and being more useful than annoying or pervy. There's still humor there but there's true friendship too.
The way Hiro's ability seems to be growing is really interesting. I can't wait to see where this goes.

4.5 star series. Really great paranormal 3-book-series following the same couple. A police detective and a ghost whisperer team up to solve all the crimes. Reviewed as a series, follows the same couple, from meeting to HEA/HFN. Wonderful world-building, great mysteries in each book with twists and turns, excellent character introductions, entertaining conversations and great writing overall. Same author as The Hitman’s Guide, but this series is WAY LESS OTT, so if Liam’s shenanigans in Hitman were too much for you, give this one a try.

While not so OTT with the snark and sass, this book still made me chuckle quite a few times and was immensely entertaining.

There is a wide range of storytelling throughout the three books, lots of fun, ridiculous situations, quirky Hiro, some sass, great conversations, fun and pervy ghost friends in Reggie and Natalie, adventure, mystery, light grief and sadness, found family, real family, suspense and investigating. Each book has a solid homicide mystery that’s twisty and interesting, each one resolves at the end of its book. Spice is medium, the scenes are detailed but few. Most of the page count is devoted to the case and investigating but peppered with a satisfying amount of relationship.

Curious if there are plans for more in this series as there is plenty that we could still get into, but nothing all that pressing or cliffy. The series could end here and it would still feel finished.

HEA, series, m/m, paranormal, ghost whisperer, homicide detective, t/b.

Związek Hiro i Maddoxa ewoluuje do poziomu "zamieszkajmy razem", a sam Maddox to zupełnie inny facet niż gbur z początku pierwszej części ;) Jeżeli ktoś lubi zakręcone, parapsychiczne i "psychiczne" (czyt. Reggie) postacie, to odnajdzie się w tej serii doskonale :D

4.5*

Not Alice Winters making me almost ugly cry again! WTH lady! Is this going to be an ongoing theme with this series, make Shannon ugly cry? I'm actually a little worried about what's to come next for this group, if what I thought was going to happen in this book didn't- now I'm going to be stressing, wondering and waiting for the shoe to drop, and hoping it doesn't!

Ghost of Truth was suspenseful and kept me on edge. Hiro finds himself in more trouble this go 'round, causing some definite stress and anxiety. The ghosts are getting stronger, making things even more interesting. The mystery kept me guessing and just like the first book I was surprised by the "whodunit"! And like the first book, there were a lot of emotions I didn't expect to feel.

I really love this group of friends, this crazy, wacky found family. I love how they're all there for each other, even Reggie is good for more than just laughs! Ms. Winters sure does a good job balancing the humor and the emotions in this series. And I cannot wait to see what's in store for them all.

This second book was such a pleasant surprise! I enjoyed the first one, but this one I enjoyed even more. It was just solid from start to finish! I think Alice's books shine once the characters are all established and then they can just go nuts together LOL

I love that we get more of Hiro and Maddox and their wild group of ghost friends. And we have new ghosts now! I can't wait for more of them. No spoilers, but I'm so intrigued how things might work out for Reggie. I adore Reggie, how over the top he is and what a great friend he is.

There is a murder mystery, plenty of humor - the window crawl scene was HILARIOUS - and I am excited for the next book in this series! I listened to the audiobook and I LOVE Greg's narration through all of this.

I love Alice Winters. She has yet to write something I haven’t loved. The MCs in this series are a little less snarky than her other series (I’m looking at you Leland!), but the ghosts add the sass and charm you can expect from Alice’s characters.
The story line in this series is so unique and it was fun to watch the mystery unfold. Excited to continue on with the next book!

3.5⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Mostly because I was annoyed the second half of the book. I was like it’s Kylie. Guys it’s Kylie. GUYS. HOW. DO. YOU. NOT. KNOW. IT. IS. KYLIE!!?? Lmao I was so frustrated.

The humor also resorted back to being that OTT humor that Winters has in some of the books that just gets on my nerves. Sometimes I’m just like okay I get it ha ha but I want this moment to be serious, and now it’s ruined.

That being said, I’m still excited for the next book. I very much like Hiro and his strange band of misfit ghosts. I’m curious about each of their stories and why they’re still hanging around. Bring it on.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Ghost of Truth is the second book in Alice Winters’ Medium Trouble series and I think this one is even better than the first, primarily based on the strength of the mystery, which I found so incredibly well done. Part of the fun here is that so much that happens on the case is unexpected, and each time things seem to have a next logical step, it goes differently than anticipated. As readers, we follow along with Hiro and Maddox as they try to figure out just what is going on. The mystery is confusing — but not in the sense that the story is poorly written or constructed, or that it’s hard to understand. It is confusing in the sense that there are all these pieces that seem like they should fit together a certain way, but just don’t, and the guys don’t know why. Then, suddenly, things align and we get a major piece of the puzzle and so much all comes together until the truth of what’s going on is ultimately revealed.

I love Hiro and Maddox and all these side characters and I am so excited for more adventures.

4/5 stars! I'll keep the review short.

I have a feeling this series is only going to get better. Greg Boudreaux is awesome as ever. I could've done with less sexual jokes but it somehow suit Reggie and Natalie so it was fun. I know I wouldn't have been able to read through it but the audiobook did wonders and made it something truly wholesome.

The case was interesting, though a bit predictable and messy, and I'm excited to see how the new edition, Keaton, will fit into the Hiro's Ghost Squads.

It's a good sign when my mind went let's finally pick up Medium Trouble #2 when I thought "I want to read something light, fun, and utterly ridiculous."

Definitely would read #3 soon!

Side note: I love Nicolas even though I don't know what he looks like. His tortured moments are endearing to me.

Just as good as the first one. In this one, you get a mix of murder, mystery, complicated feelings, and well timed jokes to carry you through. I'm half on the edge of my seat to know the small questions that Alice left unanswered, though the big mystery was solved in the book. I need more!

3.5 stars rounded up.

There was very little romance here and a very convoluted mystery plot. I’m still not 100% sure what happened in the mystery. I’m not sad a bunch of rapists died.

There’s still lots to enjoy here though with good humour and individual scenes that really held my attention.

Hard Pass

Maddox and Hiro were, as always, funny as heck. I couldn't stand pretty much everything else about this story. I think my main problem is with the ghost. Sean was adorable in how he interacted with Hiro and his daughter, but without him, we are just left with the pervy “comedic relief” characters—the very ones who make me want to drop this series due to how annoying they are.

Reggie, in particular, ruins nearly every scene he is in. Hiro and Maddox had just gotten kidnapped, and Reggie was joking about everything. Also, his constant request for various characters to be the “meat/bread in his sex sandwich” went from endearing to disgusting quickly.
I was so happy when they figured out the truth behind his death, but it was quickly squashed because he didn't even move on. Instead, we will get even more on him in the next book, and I am not looking forward to that.

Reggie isn't the only annoyance. We have even more ghosts to shake a stick at. However, we aren't given the time to care about them. The plot was all over the place as our couple tried to figure out what the heck was going on. Well, I was just as lost as them because even the end explained little.
Ok, no, I got it; I just hated it.

Somehow, four men decided to get together to kill a bunch of women by forming some type of club. Ok, cool. This seems to go on for roughly two or so years when a few months prior, one of their victims remembers them. Somehow, these guys had managed to drug the women, and three out of the four guys decided to murder them along the same way. One had some memories but not enough to recall who did it. She figured it out from his cologne and how he walked…cool. This leads her to get revenge via ghosts. In some very complicated way, she manages to drug people to the point where ghosts can possess them. From there, the ghost can kill one of the men or the person they are possessing. This quickly gets out of hand as innocent people start to die, including one side character we got to know earlier. Cool.

So now we have two factions of ghosts. Those trying to get revenge for their deaths and the ones who are trying to get revenge for their deaths. And yes, this is supposed to make sense. Does it? No. But we will ignore that regardless. So, one group tries to aid Hiro while the other tries to stop him. Sadly, the side trying to help Hiro are the bad guys, while those trying to kill him are the good guys. And yes, to clarify, no more questions will be allowed after the first sentence. So you had better have gotten it out of your system beforehand.

This story is a mess. It is a horrible and boring mess because it focuses more on jokes than trying to solve cases. The main “villain” is barely in the story, and honestly, it doesn't matter. So what did this add? Absolutely. Nothing.

Wow. Absolutely super duper. I adore this series and hope and pray fervently that there is more to come. There’s gotta be, right? Too much unanswered w the locket and Reggie and Keaton and of course Natalie. So yes, there must be more. Please baby Jesus let there be more. Fabulous writing, great characterization, so so much humor. Lots of romance and smexy times. Very fun plot although I must admit I got a little lost in there w everything they went down. This was a listen for me, w amaze-balls narration by Greg Boudreaux btw, but like I said I got a little lost and it’s not easy to “reread” in a listen so a few of plot points in the mystery sailed over my head. Also I felt like . But oh well. Didn’t detract from my overall satisfaction w this awesome ass story.

Freaking awesome. Okay so this one scared me with what went on with the ghosts. Hiro is getting so much stronger in his powers. The romance between our MC's is progressing nicely, they really complete each other. This story kept me on the edge of my seat. I really thought I had the mystery all figured out, boy was I wrong. There were so many twists and turns and when it all came to light, I was like wow, really? I never thought of that. We also find out what happened to Reggie, I love him so much. His mother was a total waste of space. You really shouldn't read this as a stand-a-lone as you would miss out on a lot of information. Anyway, this was a great mix of mystery, romance & laugh out loud moments. If you enjoyed the first book, you will not be disappointed with the second one. Highly recommended.

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest opinion

I love these characters so much! This author has such a way of creating characters that you get quickly invested and get sucked into their stories until you can’t put the books down until you finish them. She is also a master of the “WTF just happened there?” bits but making them so you just can’t stop reading! All with a healthy dose of laughter to keep it just light enough no matter how heavy the storyline. I love Hiro and Maddox. And the ghosts! Everyone needs a Reggie and a Natalie in their lives. The twists and turns in this one will keep you on your toes. I highly recommend this story but make sure you have read the other one first. This book kept me guessing and I have to admit….it had me wondering what is really right and wrong? Where does justice stop? Who gets a say? This is a really good book. Even if one part did make me almost cry!
