I loved two previous books by the author, but just couldn’t get into this one.
A YouTube influencer goes with her boyfriend and three children to an isolated yurt in the mountains. No cell phone reception, flushing toilets, running water, or electricity.
A possible follower, clearly unhinged, follows her to the yurt to wreak havoc on her life.
Up to the point I stopped reading it, it was told in two perspectives. One was that of the influencer. The other, I’ll keep quiet about. Either way, the second one didn’t appeal to me.
I wasn’t captivated, and decided to call it quits after this kind of dialogue:
“I got tired of watching you spending all your time with that dumb animal. I mean, what kind of world do we live in where a f**king baby cow gets a hundred thousand followers? All those fu**ing idiots, wasting their time watching a fu**ing cow eat grass! I practically have to beg my friends and family to like my posts.”
I forgot to mention, the book starts off with video footage of a cow being brutally murdered. It appears that the killer was jealous of the cow and his followers...and that sets this guy on a trail of destruction.
I’m guessing there’s more of a backstory, but I didn’t care enough to find out. Incidentally, I wouldn’t be surprised if he really was just jealous of the cow. These days, anything is possible.
Sincere thank you to Burbank Books and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I hope others enjoy it more. Now available.
4.0 stars — It was back to Kindle Unlimited for this one, as I heard that A.B. Whelan was a good thriller writer that I needed to read. And I have to say, for the most part, I was thoroughly impressed. “No One can Hear You Scream” centers around an online vlogger, Jennifer, who unbeknownst to her is being stalked by one of her online admirers. When she, her boyfriend, and family decide to take a vacation in the isolated wilderness, chaos soon follows. The book is fast paced and the author does a good job of creating an especially creepy stalker whose irrational behavior keeps the book’s pace moving. Jennifer is also a very well written and likable character who keeps the story compelling because you care about what happens to her. The only disappointment for me was the predictable last 50 pages that contain a climax and ending that I have read in slightly different forms at least 100 times. Other than that and a few boneheaded decisions by multiple characters (which is fairly common in these types of books) I was fully invested. I noticed that some readers claim that some of Whelan’s other novels are better. I will definitely give the author another chance as I thought her writing and character development were way above average.
Jennifer Parker, her boyfriend (Kyle) and her three children decide to to go camping in the mountains in a Yurt. Kyle researched the place thoroughly and thought it would be an excellent way to bond with the kids. Against her better judgement Jennifer agreed although she knew Kyle wanted to impress her ex-husband and who was a rugged sort of man and enjoyed the outdoors while Kyle was a little bit more refined and soft being a school teacher. They would be staying four or five days without any modern conveniences including no running water and of course no internet and the toilet facilities left a lot to be desired. Needless to say the kids were not excited or happy about this trip but Kyle and Jenn thought they would come around eventually and they did need to get know Kyle better because the couple were thinking of marrying in the near future. Jenn never expected to feel so isolated and uncomfortable in their alone time and she started to feel as if someone was watching her and noticed strange sounds and footprints nearby their camp. When Kyle and her oldest son went on a hike for and hour and didn't return Jenn knew something was very wrong and set out to find them on her own. Unbeknownst to Jennifer they were never alone on this trip and someone is waiting for Jenn to realize she was never meant to be on this trip with Kyle and she will soon find out that out in these desolate woods "No One Can Hear You Scream!"
This was an unpredictable, chilling and suspenseful story that was very enjoyable while painful to read at times. The story moved slowly at first keeping the reader comfortable until the half-way point and then got very creepy and eerie with a great amount of tension in spots. It was just so terrifyingly good. There were some twists and turns completely unexpected and had me saying "Wow". The characters were so believable and each personality was either likeable or dispicable but they kept me on my toes. Throughout the entire book there was a character that was a mystery until the last few pages which I felt was brilliantly written and kept the suspense going in a subtle way where I almost forgot about them. All I can say is " Well done A.B. Whelan" you definitely, now have a new fan!
Trigger Warnings: Extreme, physical violence, terrifying, sexual violence and graohic animal violence!
I want to thank the publisher "Burbank Books" and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this terrific novel and any thoughts or opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!
I highly recommend this terrific book and have given a rating of 4 1/2 RAW AND CHILLING 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌠 STARS!!
That. Was. Terrifying! I can see that this book might be quite polarising but I enjoyed it. I have enjoyed most of Whelan’s books but this one was supercharged. Full disclosure though this book will have red flags for a number of people. It opened with a scene of the brutal murder of a mini long-haired cow called George and went on to include quite graphic rape and humiliation scenes. If you are squeamish - forget it. It was almost too much for me but I kept reading because I was transfixed by Whelan’s precise wielding of the scalpel - she really captured the pain, shame, humiliation and rage of the victims.
The book starts, unfortunately with George’s murder, but after that there are 2 plot lines. One follows Jennifer Parker, lifestyle influencer and vlogger and her boyfriend Tyler and three children - Jayden 17, Emily 14 and Noah 9. Tyler is younger than Jennifer and struggles to live up to the reputation of her ex-husband Connor, particularly with the children. He suggests a short getaway at a remote yurt in Montana without any mod cons, just to bolster his tough man credibility. The other plot line involves Alex interviewing psychopathic killer Paul Hoffman for a book. At about 30% you start to get an inkling how these plot lines come together but then…. Then you are catapulted into the horror.
So there they are, in the middle of nowhere. No phone, no internet, no neighbours. Note to self - never have a holiday that takes you completely off grid, always have a plan B. Anyway this obsessed fan of Jennifer’s holds them hostage while he plays out his sick fantasies. And they are sick. I cringed - a lot! I don’t want to say any more. You have enough information to decide whether you want to read this or not. It’s not pretty but I do think the author captured the feelings of the victims extremely realistically. Thanks to Netgalley and Burbank Books for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.
A...M...A...Z...I...N…G!! This was a dark and disturbing psychological thriller, and I loved every page! I’ve only read three of Whelan’s books, but they’ve all been 5-star-reads and I was addicted after the first one. I automatically request her upcoming books as soon as I see them on NetGalley, without reading the synopsis. She’s that good!
The book starts off with the violent murder of a mini cow named George. I know…I hate animal abuse and murder, too. It also contains scenes of rape and humiliation. If this one is too disturbing for you, try one of her others. She’s an excellent author that I highly recommend!
Jennifer is an influencer, and her life sounds amazing. She’s recently divorced, has three children and a new boyfriend that just moved in with her and her kids. Tyler is younger than her and still living with his mother when they started dating. I wasn’t a big fan. He’s trying to impress her and the kids, and show off for the ex-husband, so he plans a long weekend away for the family. Four days in Montana spent in a secluded yurt, with no phone service or internet. No one is particularly excited about the trip, especially since Tyler is not a skilled outdoorsman.
I don’t think this trip could have turned out any worse. I’m not a big fan of camping. I like my luxuries…a warm shower, comfy bed, running water, etc. After reading this, I don’t know if I’d feel safe in a secluded cabin, even with all the amenities of home!!
The excitement starts early and the tension stays high the entire time. And....WOW....that ending! What a shocker!
Huge thanks to NetGalley, Burbank Books and A.B. Whelan. I received an ARC and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM is a gripping psychological thriller about obsession, survival, and family bonds, by bestselling author A.B. Whelan.
Please Note that this psychological novel contains SERIOUS ANIMAL ABUSE AND VIOLENCE. I wish I had known this before selecting this novel to read and review. Being an animal lover, I do not like to read about animal cruelty and wished I had been cautioned at the beginning, as I quickly flipped the pages.
Jennifer Parker’s boyfriend, Tyler had just moved in with her and were now starting a new life together. Jennifer, a successful YouTuber, was recently divorced from her husband, Connor, of eighteen years and lives in a beautiful home in Los Angeles with her three children, Jayden the oldest at 17 and Emily (14) and Noah (9) and now a new man despite the children’s disapproval.
Tyler was a middle school English teacher and a “mama’s boy”. In order to break the mold and prove his masculinity, he suggests going on an isolated off-the-grid holiday in the mountains of Montana. Where there would be no cell phone reception or running water. Not very appealing to Jennifer, but she agrees to the trip because maybe there was a chance for the children to connect with her boyfriend.
What followed was a vacation of a lifetime where a family is trapped on an isolated mountain at the mercy of a sociopath killer.
Jennifer’s subscribers are excited about following their favorite online vlogger on this adventure in the wilderness.
Having really enjoyed so many of the author’s previous novels, I found I was disappointed with this one, because the animal violence at the beginning tarnished the entire novel for me. Looking forward to her next novel.
Ugh, that first chapter is heartbreaking. It shot through my heart like a loose bullet. And the saddest thing is: this happens in real life. Innocent animals being slaughtered by "animals"—humans.
Tyler and Jen have no chemistry. At all. It feels like every conversation they ever have turns into a fight. Cringey. But I guess this makes the book all the more interesting. The villain is a piece of worthless shit, and I wanted to pummel him to the ground until his neck snaps. Ugh, this book made me hate so much.
But, I like it. I got a bit emotional while reading some of the chapters because no family, no children, and no woman should ever be in this kind of situation. The trauma, the fear, and the lifelong effect of what happened to Jen and her family are too heartbreaking. I just wish the ending didn't drag a bit.
There are a lot of trigger warnings for this one, so please tread lightly. This will leave a hole in your heart.
Gentle reminder: NEVER, EVER, EVER GO TO AN UNFAMILIAR AREA OR CAMPING GROUND WITH NO PHONE RECEPTION OR PEOPLE FOR MILES, NO MATTER HOW BREATHTAKING THE SCENERY IS.
First I need to say this book needs trigger warnings for graphic animal abuse, violence, and sexual abuse. I often avoid things with animal abuse, and would have liked to at least been warned before picking this up. I found some of the characters awkward which made getting into the story more difficult. I really hated Tyler which made the first half of the book hard to get into. The main character Jennifer is an influencer who is divorced and dating a new person,. Tyler, who suggested they take the kids and go to a yurt in Montana and be completely cut off from phones or technology (clearly nothing bad will happen with this idea). The alternating perspective took me a second to figure to out but was an interesting contrast. It’s a decently twisty story and it is definitely dark which I liked.
This is a really dark and disturbing read. I can do dark, but this one was another level and was at time really hard to read. It definately won't be for everyone as there are a lot of trigger warnings - including animal cruelty and rape. In saying all of this, it was a hard book to put down. It is really fast paced and addictive, even if it makes you squeamish.
Would you ever go on a holiday and completely off grid? That is a big NO from me, and even more so after reading No One Can Hear You Scream. Jennifer is a newly divorced influencer and heads off to a cabin in the middle on nowhere with no phone service with her kids and new boyfriend. Things soon take a lethal turn when a fanatical fan of Jennifer's tracks them down and holds them hostage. I am not saying anything more about the story but it is brutal and unsettling.
Thank you to the author AB Whelan for sending me a copy of her book to read.
Oooh…normally I’m not spooked by horror or thriller books, but this one definitely left me feeling uneasy! I’ll warn you right now, this is not a book for people who have triggers. From animal cruelty, to rape, child abuse and murder, this was unsettling just because it was so realistic.
Jennifer Parker, mother of three, vlogger and recently divorced, is about to take her kids on vacation with her new boyfriend, Tyler. Her ex, Connor, is an outdoorsman, so Tyler decides to take them off grid to a yurt in the mountains of Montana. His need to compete with his girlfriend‘s former husband (ugh, the machismo) makes him take this risk, even though he’s not an experienced camper.
Jennifer is also nervous about being in a remote location with no cell service and no help for miles, but she really wants this chance to start making memories with Tyler (plus this will be great for her vlog) so they pack up the kids and head to Montana. Connor teaches them about bear mace, splitting wood for a fire, etc., but the family really could’ve used a different kind of survival class.
I can’t say much else without spoiling things, but this is definitely a book you won’t want to put down. It’s written from the perspectives of Jennifer, Connor and Alex, the man who ends up writing a book about the family’s story. It’s definitely suspenseful and definitely thrilling! A solid four stars for this one.
(I’d like to thank the Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and A.B. Whelan for the complimentary copy in exchange for my review.)
If there was ever a character who I hated from the get-go is the horrible character in this book. This is one INTENSE book!! Lots of triggers in this book - animal cruelty, rape, kidnapping, murder … Jennifer is a famous internet influencer with her you tube videos and she is newly divorced with 3 kids and a new boyfriend. The new bf suggested they go on a week long vacation to stay in a yurt (I had never heard of it so I had to google what a yurt was) off the grid with no phone, no electricity, no internet, etc. A you tube follower of Jennifer’s is out to get her. That’s who I hate. This story was so realistic at times, I thought what would I do if this was me? Frightening for sure! It kept me guessing till the very last page. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review. To be published October 2021.
This was my third book by A.B. Whelan, and I think it is her best yet! That said, it is very dark and disturbing, and probably the scariest book I've ever read - so please tread lightly as this won't be for everyone (I had to skim through a few scenes). I absolutely loved the cold, isolated Montana setting, but definitely don't plan on staying in a yurt out there anytime soon! The book is told mostly through Jennifer's POV, but we also get a few chapters from the POV of Alex, a journalist writing about the stalker and his crimes sometime in the future. I thought this was such an interesting perspective, and loved how Alex's chapters came together at the end with a fantastic twist! We also get a few chapters from the POV of Connor, trying to piece together what was happening in Montana. I really connected with Jennifer and admired her strength, and her kids were incredibly resilient. The influencer element definitely makes you think about how much you share online, as you never really know everyone who is following your content. Thank you so much to A.B. Whelan for sending me a copy of of this book!
Feel free to message me more specifics about trigger warnings, but they include: sexual assult, humiliation, animal cruelty, kidnapping, stalking
I am somewhat new to A.B. Whelan’s novel. I did read If I Had Two Lives and enjoyed it. Story starts with Jennifer Parker, mother of three and is a video blogger aka influencer who is very successful. She uses and reviews products for cooking as well as health and beauty. She has divorced Connor after being married for 18 years. Soon after her divorce she becomes involved with Tyler. Tyler is younger, never married, a middle school English teacher and lives at home with his mother. Jennifer’s family is upset with her divorce and her children don’t like Tyler. Tyler wants to prove he is every but the man as Connor and wants to take Jennifer and the children to the mountains in hopes of gaining the children’s love and respect. He selected a Yurt (yikes we went on a snow trip to Yosemite and stayed in the tent village. The tents were permeant, had a wood floor and also door to help keep in the heat. We had to use the community shower as well as the outhouse. The girls and I hated it! I cannot imagine staying isolated in a yurt!)
Jennifer agrees so they head to the mountains in nearby Bozeman, Montana. The Yurt is located in a secluded wooded area and certainly not an idea vacation situation. After getting settled Tyler wants to bond with Jennifer’s oldest son Jaden and states they are going to explore the nearby woods. However, when they don’t return hours later, Jennifer goes searching. She discovered that they have been followed by an obsessed fan, Paul Hoffman,
Note: This book came with a warning ~ Allow yourself enough time as you will want to read in one sitting. Glad I stopped last night ~ I was ¾ in and it was so emotional! I thought since it was late I need to stop. So glad I waited to finish as the last part required more consecration to register what was happening. A Wow read for me!
BTW: There is a trailer on this novel both on A.B. Whelan’s Instagram as well as her Blog. Author A.B.Whelan: New Release: No One Can Hear You Scream (abwhelan.blogspot.com)
Want to thank NetGalley and Burbank Books for this eGalley. This file has been made available to me before publication in an early form for an honest professional review. Publishing Release Date scheduled for October 20, 2021
Jennifer, A stay at home mommy vlogger/youtube influencer, recently divorced mom of 3, live-in boyfriend of a year. She’s unaware of her delusional stalker. He's a sociopath murder, and no mind altering medication or therapy will make him better, he’s a monster!
Such a terrifying suspenseful thriller you’ll find so hard to put down.
Jennifer has a wonderful life. She's an influencer/vlogger, living in a beautiful home with her three children, She and her husband are recently divorced, but still civil and she has a new boyfriend.
The boyfriend, Tyler, is a school teacher and has issues with Jennifer's ex-husband, Tyler is a mama's boy and wants to be seen as macho as the ex-husband. He talks Jennifer and taking the kids for a vacation in Montana ... no running water, no phone reception, just plain roughing-it. Thinking of bears and snakes and the like, she's not real keen on the idea, but wants to support her boyfriend.
(Book Blurb) Alone on the mountain, where no one can hear her scream, Jennifer realizes that it wasn’t the deep, dark woods she had to fear.
Read in one sitting, I found myself sitting on the edge of my chair. Well-written, the plot is riveting, the story line compelling. The author has done a superb job with character development, taking time to introduce each of them along with their foibles. Their interactions are credible ... the fear and angst is palpable. And just when you think things couldn't get worse for the characters ... the author sends it sky-rocketing. There's plenty of action that leads to a hair-raising unexpected conclusion.
Many thanks to the author / Burbank Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
Psychology thriller . Absolutely Great Book Right Here. My Favorite genre of Books.
Jennifer.
Is a mom of 3. She's popular on IG Her followers depend on her post and videos , so many followers She's more popular than she realizes. Being so popular can be deadly. And you don't even know it.
Tyler, Jennifer's boyfriend wants to take the family on a remote vacation off grid. No phones no net just The wilderness. There's more in the wilderness than anyone was expecting.
Conner, The EX Husband Knows this isn't a trip for his family. Still loves Jennifer. Would do anything for his family.
The Cop, Her Name Elaine sapp How cool is it to be reading a book and find your own name in a book... thats what happened. Loved it..
I honestly Loved this Book. The Ending was absolutely Perfect... Thank you A.b.whelan 🌹
Jennifer Parker is a successful lifestyle YouTuber living in a beautiful home with her three children. Recently divorced, she dove right into a new relationship with Tyler, who had an idea to go on an off-the-grid vacation. Even though Jennifer and the kids aren't crazy about it, they agree to go on the trip. Most of Jennifer's subscribers are excited to follow her adventures, while others see it as the perfect opportunity to act out their twisted fantasies. Alone on the mountain, where no one can hear her scream, Jennifer realizes that it wasn't the deep, dark woods she had to fear.⠀ ⠀ NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM is a thrilling tale of a mother's fight to save herself and her children from the sick and twisted delusions of a fan. Can you imagine being in the middle of nowhere with your family enjoying nature, and one of your followers shows up? It gives me chills just thinking about it! Tragically, it becomes a harsh reality for Jennifer that no one should ever endure. Written in a dual narrative, A.B. Whelan perfectly recounts the stories past and present day. During the captivity in the wilderness, my heart would not stop pumping! I had mini heart attacks at least five times. It was so action-packed and petrifying that I couldn't put the book down without knowing what had happened to Jennifer and her family.⠀ ⠀ As for her stalker, Paul was a full-blown psychopath with severe mental issues. The scenes surrounding his sexual "fantasies" with Jennifer were hard to swallow. I urge you to dredge lightly, but please know that the author did a great job concealing the hard-to-read details. My rage towards Paul shows what an incredible writer Whelan is; her villainous creation felt all too real. Even though Jennifer's experience was heartbreaking, I admired her great deal of strength and bravery.⠀ ⠀ As a whole, I found this plot to be highly addictive, with just the right dose of suspense. I was pleasantly surprised by the finale and wasn't expecting the story to take that turn whatsoever. If you're looking for a fast-paced thriller that'll have you wanting to delete social media, then check this one out!
I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of this. This story transgresses family saga/thriller genres effectively because it is a) believable, b) disturbing, and c) gripping. Jennifer Parker is a mom of three _ Jayden, Emily, and Noah. Her online daily videos on Social Media covering cooking/health/beauty have a huge following that earns her a decent income with the wonderful perks of freebies that she gets to try out and review. She is hugely popular. She divorced her husband Connor of 18 years and shortly thereafter becomes involved with a much younger man, Taylor, who moves in with her and her family less than a year later This boosts her ego but doesn't quite fulfill her. Their relationship isn't approved of by his mother and Jennifer's own parents keep hoping their daughter will reconcile with Connor. Jaden, Emily and Noah barely tolerate Taylor. In an effort to prove to Taylor that she is committed to their relationship, Jennifer agrees to his suggestion to take the children on a vacation to a barely habitable, inhospitable area in the mountains near Bozeman, Montana, surrounded by woods with no cellphone reception to stay in a yurt. The woods however are not the only danger she and her family need to fear. Paul Hoffman is an over-zealous, mentally unstable fan of Jennifer's who sees her family vacation as the perfect time to get close to her and act out his twisted fantasies. 5 Stars.
I admit, I had to put this one down a few times after starting it. As a Vet Tech/Animal Rescuer, I found the first chapter disturbing. This also contains violence and sexual abuse that some people may not want to read. Overall I found this to be a very dark read.
Jennifer is a YouTube influencer and recently divorced after 18 years of marriage to Conner. They have three children together and recently Jennifer‘s new boyfriend, Tyler has moved into their home. Connor is definitely more of a rough and tough type of man and Tyler is a school teacher who doesn’t seem to be very comfortable with men like Connor. But Tyler wants to be the man he thinks Jennifer wants, and suggests a vacation off the grid so the family can “rough it” for a bit. This wasn’t really what Jennifer had in mind for a vacation but she goes along with it to support her new boyfriend.
Apparently Jennifer has a stalker who is not going to let her go away without following her. And yes, the storyline is terrifying. This is when things get pretty bad for all involved.
This story packs a lot of punches for sure. There were many times my jaw dropped in surprise at what had happened. I just struggled with the animal stuff. 4 scary ⭐️’s
Thank you to BookSirens for providing an e-copy of this book. My review is voluntary. #booksirens #NoOneCanHearYouScream #ABWhelan
I'm super excited to announce the release of my fifth psychological thriller 'No One Can Hear You Scream' early reviewers call "chilling", "terrifying", "unputdownable", "a massive hit".
What if a fan followed you into the deep, dark woods?
Before you dive into this atmospheric and chilling thriller, I wanted to give you a little backstory of the events that inspired me to write this book.
The story starts with the aftermath of a shocking event that is not for the faint of heart. As sad as it is for me to acknowledge, it was inspired by the actual events at my friend’s animal shelter. The news haunted me for a long time, and I wanted to commemorate it. The result is a heartbreaking Chapter One that some readers may find difficult to read.
The rest of the story is based on an off-the-grid vacation I took with my husband and two children during the pandemic in Idaho. My husband knew that I planned to write a thriller set in a yurt on a secluded mountain and did everything he could to scare me at every opportunity to help me find inspiration. After reading this book, I’m sure you’ll conclude that his efforts have borne fruit.
Our off-the-grid vacation was terrific, but what if…. Read on to find out.

I love deep, dark, twisted novels and No One Can Hear You Scream fits the bill to a T. Warning! Brace yourself! Brutal. Graphic.
The animal sanctuary took in those pets whose owners didn’t want them any more. Sounds like a good story…right?
Jennifer Parker is a YouTube influencer and shares her time with the animal sanctuary, as does her son, Jayden. He even created an Instagram account for George, a cow, who is the star. I love that our social media world is making an appearance in novels, not always in a good way.
I immediately didn’t like Tyler, her momma’s boy husband. Looks to me like she has another child instead of a life partner. Good thing she ditched him. He might have made a good boy toy, but is not a keeper.
Again…I am furious, sickened, disgusted…If I were ever to meet someone like HIM I hope I would have the courage to take him out! The abuse is shocking, even for me and I love being shocked and sickened in a depraved thriller sort of way.
We have two plots going on, and, though I haven’t talked about Alex, I have a feeling I know what part his story will play.
No One Can Hear You Scream by A B Whelan may have you thinking twice about putting your life on line, for all the world to see.
OMG…I see it coming…so freaking twisted! I had to take a deep breath at 82%. The evil keeps on going. Well, I didn’t see that coming…and that is why I love A B Whelan so much. She gives and she teases. I figure out one thing, then, BAM, in your face.
This line really hit home: Our world has gotten so small it suffocates us.
I had moments where I wanted to shout out to Jennifer…and the police!
Mind blowing. Gut wrenching. I love this dark, gritty, horrendous story that others may shy away from, and A B Whelan took it to the max with No One Can Hear You Scream
A B Whelan has included book club questions at the end. I think they will create a lively discussion.
I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of No One Can Hear You Scream by A B Whelan.
Well there goes all my finger nails lol 😆 this book is fast paced , intense and disturbing. There are trigger warnings galore in this as well so if you want to know, slide into my DMs 🤣
I really enjoyed the strength and love Jennifer had for her children. She survived solely to make sure her children were same. To me, that was the best part of the book. The writing was great , the attention to detail was spot on and I felt like the actual story line is chillingly close to real life. Especially for us Bookstagrammers who put so much of our life out there 😳 I do wish we had found out more about the aftermath but it was all alluded to which was nice and we do get to see the survivors after some time has passed at the end. If you are looking for something to get your adrenaline going-look no further.
Recently divorced, Jennifer Parker is a famous YouTube influencer who lives in Los Angeles with her 3 children. When Jennifer starts a new relationship quickly after her divorce, the kids are very skeptical and disapproving. The boyfriend, Tyler, is a middle school teacher who in an effort prove his ability to survive an outdoors vacation, plans a trip to Montana where they will have no cell phone reception or running water for several days. Jennifer sees this as an opportunity for her kids to bond with Tyler, so she agrees to it. When she gets there she encounters a situation she could not have predicted!
The latest A.B. Whelan novel has a unique storyline that I won’t soon forget. The author has a way to keep the tension very high throughout the story which held my interest perfectly. The characters were very relatable. I would give a trigger warning for animal cruelty, but if you can get past that, it is a very good book.
Many thanks to A.B. Whelan for my gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.
This review will be posted to my Instagram Blog (@coffee.break.book.reviews) in the near future.
This one is very dark and highly disturbing but also very readable.
I recommend you read the various reviews for this one before you jump in.
In this atmospheric psychological thriller we find Jennifer, divorced with three kids and a new boyfriend who is trying to live up to the ex's reputation. Jennifer is an attractive social media influencer with thousands of followers. When Tyler, the boyfriend, suggests the family go on an 'off-the-grid' three day getaway to a remote mountain yurt, what could possibly go wrong? I found this one to be very well written with a compelling plot and a fast pace. I'm a teeth grinder and my jaws are sore from so much clinching. The suspense is palpable. I was all in for it! I'm not one who enjoys the killing of pets but thankfully in this one it happens in the first chapter and had I not heard such good things about the story as a whole I might not have continued. I'm thankful I did.
This book was SO SCARY! Never will I ever book a weekend in a remote mountain yurt, not that I planned to anyway, just now it’s for sure! So, up front I want to offer trigger warnings for animal cruelty, rape, humiliation. It was almost too much for me and I had to skim over some of that. But I hung in there because this is not my first book by this author and I knew she was going to tell a story I wanted to hear. Whelan is masterful at character development as well as spinning a twisty story to keep the reader interested, engaged and wanting to race to a satisfying ending.
Thank you Netgalley and Burbank Books for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. And special thanks to A.B. Whelan for sending me a free download of your book, it’s an honor to review your stories.
Jennifer Parker runs a successful lifestyle vlog, & lives with her new younger boyfriend, Tyler, & her 3 children from her previous marriage. Jennifer recently divorced ex-husband Connor after 18 years, although he is still a regular presence in her life much to Tyler's frustration, so when Tyler proposes that the family go on an off-the-grid vacation in Montana, Jennifer reluctantly agrees. When they arrive, Jennifer has the strange feeling that she is being watched, & she hears the sound of snapping twigs as if someone is out there, but can't see anyone.
Tyler & her oldest son, Jayden go on a short walk first thing the next morning, but when they haven't returned 3 hours later, Jennifer goes off in search of them leaving her daughter & youngest son at the yurt. Several hours later she finally finds Jayden - he has been shot in the leg & he tells her that Tyler is dead. A strange man accosted them out of nowhere, shot Tyler point blank in the chest, then shot Jayden as he was trying to get away. They make their way back to the yurt only to find Jayden's attacker has gotten there first.
When I first read the synopsis, I thought it was going to be a cat-and-mouse thriller about a killer tracking the family in mountains, but it was like a very gory episode of Criminal Minds. There are trigger warnings galore: graphic animal cruelty/death (although I was forewarned about that from another review so was able to skip the first chapter), sexual assault, & violence. The author also brings in the issues around putting so much of your life online & how vulnerable this can leave us.
The narrative is told mainly from the point of view of Jennifer, & a character called Alex who is visiting the perpetrator, Paul, in prison to interview him for a book Alex is writing about the case. We only get a couple of chapters at the start from Alex's point of view so it is not immediately clear what the character has to do with the story until we hear from Alex again later. I didn't much care for the book to be honest until the final third, when the author brought in a couple of twists which set me thinking. I rate this 2.5 stars (rounded up to 3 on sites where half stars are not available).

This was an electrifying thriller that I read in one go! It was intense and nail biting.
When Jennifer Parker, who is a very popular Youtube influencer, newish boyfriend Taylor suggests a quick vacation to the remote mountains of Montana with her three kids, she is a bit hesitant as this will be totally foreign to them. They will be off-the-grid sleeping in a Yurt, have no internet access and will be vulnerable to the elements. Unfortunately this is the least of their worries!
When a crazy unstable fan who is obsessed and in love with Jennifer starts acting out his sick fantasies their lives are turned upside down and will never be the same again. Jennifer was such a strong and selfless mother, her kids wellbeing came before her own!
I enjoyed how the story was told from the different POV’s and in different timelines, it made the journey feel real and added to the suspense. The authors writing was flawless and she put a lot of thought into her storytelling.
I loved the ending, it was a pleasant surprise and great way to end the story.
I loved this. Sick and twisted, just how I like my thrillers. I read this so fast because I needed to find out what was going on. The writing grips you right from the start and it’s really no holds barred from start to finish. It’s pretty brutal in some parts. If you’re not sensitive to violence, I really recommend this book. It was a wild ride!
TW: Starts off with an animal being murdered, so be aware. Also, rape. If that’s a trigger, definitely stay away.
