What if all your favourite Marvel Superheroes were turned into Zombies? That is the question that is posed in the omnibus of the nearly 20 year old Marvel Zombies series. The story written by Robert Kirkman (the man behind the Walking Dead and Invincible) and artist Sean Phillips explore.

After the events of a crossover comic with Ultimate Fantastic Four (that I have not read) a mysterious plague has struck the heroes of Earth-2149, turning the majority of heroes into flesh-eating zombies. But unlike the zombies you are familiar with these ones quip and talk and are just downright hilarious at points, they hunt the survivors and have to confront a cosmic force while battling their own ravenous hunger.

The omnibus contains Zombies 1, 2 and Dark Days which serves as an introduction and prologue to the story. Dark Days is probably the weakest part of the story in my opinion. It is full of plot holes and is just too dark compared to the rest of the series. Yes the series is dark, gory and gruesome but seeing Reed Richards turn his family and being eaten alive by them is not what I call fun. Also a running gag in Zombie 1 is Spiderman hating himself because he killed his aunt and wife, now that is funny in the confines of a small gag bit but seeing it take place in Dark Days (within the opening three pages of the book) is very disturbing and makes the gag not as funny.

The whole comic doesn’t take itself seriously which is where it has an advantage over the other graphic novel I can compare this to (Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe). Apart from the exception of Dark Days, Zombie 1 and 2 are funny little stories that are full of bloody fun violence.

Zombies 2 is not as good or as concise as the first series, dealing with the new colony of humans left on Earth while the Zombies travel the stars devouring other planets. It focuses on a power struggle between the Black Panther and a rival leader Malcolm. The zombies arrive back on Earth and they must put aside their differences to stop the zombie threat but a few of the zombies have a change of heart as they realise there is something different now.

Kirkman is the king of writing zombie comics. He can make them both terrifying at times but this series lets him poke fun at the concept and the characters herein. Spider-Man is a prime example of this in the whole of Zombies 1 crying and being genuinely horrified at what he has done since being turned.

Phillip’s art leaves a lot to be desired. Characters proportions are fine but the faces are all similar due to their zombification. It comes across as a little lazy. Some of the backgrounds are also very bad, some panels are just covered in a fog like effect that just looks terrible. However big moments (full page splashes and double page spreads) are epic in scope and really show off the good art work he can do.

Each chapter features the covers of the original issues as well, all zombie parodies of classic marvel comics. These are fun and ghoulishly gruesome.

Overall Marvel Zombies is fun. Worth reading if you are interested in seeing some fun comedic zombie action.

In honor of Halloween I decided to reread this classic.
There's not much that tops this. This is Marvel at its darkest, at its most hopeless. The heroes have been exposed to a zombie virus that makes them constantly hunger for flesh. Few remain in this universe that are sane or unexposed.
Kirkman's writing is awesome. The most negative features of your favorite heroes are here in full swing; Reed's willing to do anything for evolution, Giant-Man is willing to do everything in his power to retain the hunger, Captain America (known as Colonel America in this universe), uses his leadership to guide an army of the undead towards the innocents and spreading the virus among heroes and villains alike.
The art has grown on me over the years. Sean Phillips is a good artist to clarify, but he's got a different style that can be hit or miss. It works for this book though. The shading gives every character a menacing look, even those not infected. Its a cool style for this type of book (I think he also did the art for black hammer but I can't remember). I especially like the design used for Giant Man.
The sequel isn't AS cool, but I do like it still. I like the high concepts, but I think you can tell that both the artist and the author are getting tired of the story they're telling.
Multiverse stories struggle to change past histories of characters, instead focusing on diverging at a certain key point in time. This story is not afraid of that. Steve Rogers was president for a portion of a term. The Avengers consists of Ms. Marvel, Luke Cage, Colonel America, Wasp, Black Widow, and Hawkeye. None of the earth characters have met Galactus or the Silver Surfer. Iron Man wears a more classic rendition of his suit, and the characters all have minute differences across the board. Its refreshing to see something stray THAT MUCH from the mainline storyline.
I think this is an awesome read for Marvel fans. Its fun, its dark and grim, its high concept, and its still something super fresh almost 20 years later. If you love zombies and superheroes, look no further.

I’ve been looking for this big omnibus of all the Marvel Zombies comics since I saw this girl reading it next to me in the computer lab one day during my freshman year of high school (true story, thanks for letting me read over your shoulder Zoe!). The story was as I remembered it (sort of, I don’t think I ever got to read the whole thing), and it was good! Definitely an interesting plot, especially the Galactus and Zombie Heroes vs. Villains fight. I do wish there were more lines given to women or female superheroes, as Janet Van Dyne (or Wasp) was really the only female superhero with lines. I mean, (spoilers ahead) they had Phoenix with them for the entire second half and she only got like five lines total. Dude! She’s Phoenix!! They could’ve utilized her way more than they did. Overall, good comic, great art, and good storyline!

Own: will keep in my collection, would reread, would recommend to a friend.

The heroes and villains of the Marvel universe contract a virus that turns them into zombies. After devouring everything on their Earth they find a way to travel the universe and multiverse, eating everything in their path. They eventually come back home only to find that they missed some food.

This is a fun series of comics. I read them a a while ago but chanced across an omnibus version so decided to re-read the story. It offers some dark themes but also some light humor too. It's drawn really well and it's very captivating. It does finish with some questions unanswered, which can be a little frustrating, but I like to think that it just leaves things open for future Zombie Marvel stories.

Surprisingly good. I really liked how the two stories actually focused on the Zombie heroes rather than the survivors as it made for an interesting read as we got to read about how the Zombies are experiencing the events instead of the usual human perspective.

Since the story was based in an alternative dimension rather than the main one it allowed the writers to write freely which made for some great ideas to be expressed without having to worry about continuity.

The second half of the collection was better than the first as I prefered the characterisation of some of the characters like Zombie Spider-man, even though the violence in the first half was great. Getting to see Zombie Heroes fight Galactus was really cool.

I think DC still beat them for Zombie like stories but a good story nonetheless.

I liked this comic,as I've read the beginning a while ago and wanted to see how the story ended.

It is a bit of slight open end though, so I don't know if they'll pick it up in the future.

The heroes of Marvel end up as zombies and go through the universe devouring every planet of its people.

Finally they return to earth to find out that there were survivors, and that their hunger wasn't as incapacitated as they thought.

This was a really awesome comic, I liked how it wasn't just your typical zombies, these ones actually kept their minds and were able to see what they were doing was wrong and that was a really cool thing to see. Such a fun ride from start to end, not too sure if it continues after that ending though, I'll need to find out.

Really enjoyed this comic and it was super dark which makes a nice change.
I loved the tension and got invested in what was gonna happen.
I liked spider man’s redemption and talk about why he always makes jokes.
Going to start watching the new marvel zombies on Disney plus later today and I can’t wait

I've got to be honest. I love Marvel comics, but I find zombie stuff very boring. I wasn't interested in this, and I had no intention of reading it, but my zombie-obsessed 11-year-old demanded that I read it. So I did . . . and predictably, I found it kind of boring. It's not bad writing, I just don't find zombie stuff interesting. 3/5.

A unique take on zombies allowing the personalities of the marvel characters to be fully embraced while simultaneously being a zombie. This makes their world pretty intense especially bc they don’t go down as easy as your typically zombies.

Meh.

I wonder how Kirkman feels about this nowadays.

This is the guy that wrote The Walking Dead, a highly enticing narrative with complex characters.

Marvel zombies is nothing like that. Instead, it's a goofy take on the zombie theme with marvel characters.

It's fun I guess, but nothing sophisticated.

This omnibus gets more messed up with every page. I enjoyed it! It definitely hit its stride after the initial outbreak section, when the focus shifts from “how are we going to stop this” to the zombies themselves, and we get to see the people we know and love as heroes become…not even villains, just straight up messed up zombies with superpowers who are desperate to eat everything and anything in their path.

None of them come out of this looking good, and there are some utterly bleak moments, from Hank Pym trapping and carving up T’Challa, to Spider-Man devouring Mary Jane and Aunt May. It’s really grim, and you can tell the writing and drawing process must have been so much fun as they put the heroes in these situations.

From a zombie angle, it actually feels really different and unique, too. Only heroes are affected, meaning the rest of the human race is food. And they cannot die. Quite simply, there is no way to beat them. Most zombie stories focus on a small band of survivors, and though we do get that here, the focus is on the zombies themselves, who do retain some aspect of themselves, are able to speak and quip and are pretty much the same heroes, except with any element that made them ‘good’ stripped away – they have no morality, just a need to feed, and rise to the top of the food chain.

Above all, this graphic novel is a lot of fun, as these superpowered zombies rampage across the universe, discovering fun new things about being zombies, and lose limb after limb after limb. Again, every page is more messed up than the last, and at one point I found myself reading purely to find out what, exactly, happens when these zombies eat meat from their own stomachs, or take on the Silver Surfer.

If you want some Marvel but kind of dark, fun, messy and gory, you might find this is right up your street.
