I felt like I had a dementor on my shoulder, sucking the life and happiness out of me. It was at that point I realised I needed to do something about this; that it was no way to live. So I decided to seek professional help.’ Sidhartha Mallya has had a unique life to say the least. Born into one of India’s most prominent business families, he has had—from an outside perspective—what many would consider a blessed life. Appearances can often be deceiving, though, and at times what was going on inside was a very different story. In 2016, he went through depression. Something that came as a bit of a surprise to him, given that he seemingly had the world at his he was young, had just graduated from a prestigious drama school and had upcoming film projects. However, despite all the wonderful opportunities that awaited him, he felt desperately unhappy, constantly low and like his insides were being crushed by a vice. That was when Sidhartha realised that something was not right and he sought professional help. Thus began the journey to understanding his current mental state as well as an exploration of the other mental issues he has suffered throughout his life and where they might have stemmed from. In this searingly honest, witty and wonderfully written memoir, he opens up about these matters—struggling with depression, living with OCD, the effects of his parents’ divorce, why he quit drinking—and also what helped him face and overcome his challenges.
If I'm Honest by Siddhartha Mallya, a memoir of his mental health journey. Inspite of having almost everything in life, we never know what may come our way. Little did Siddhartha Mallya himself.
Mental Health is not immune to anyone in this world. It has been a major concern of many people these days. This book starts with Siddhartha Mallya realising that it's okay to take help and also the fact that you are not alone.
We also get to see about how Siddhartha's childhood was across his boarding school years and coping up parent's getting divorced. He suffered from OCD for a long time. And then comes his young adulthood days where he worked for RCB team in Indian Premier League.
I've Never Been (Un)Happier by Shaheen Bhatt and If I'm Honest by Siddhartha Mallya, both have been quite similar in the way both these books take place. I usually read them only to reflect upon their journey and get some insight. If you thinking from this being a Literary work, it's definitely not the best.
Sid let’s us into his life in this incredibly vulnerable book. It’s very brave to let strangers see your insides and I’m so glad I got to read this book. I have some work to do on myself and after reading this book I’m inspired to start seeing a therapist.
Life is a long journey, it starts when we are born not when we start understanding what life is, we may not acknowledge every little thing that we encountered in our life and heart, but it always remains inside us, we don't realize but it actually already accomplished its space in our unconscious mind. Those chunks of incidents that made you lose your self-confidence, emotions, the things that made you agitated, and guilty, the journey to overcoming the odds and loneliness, self-realization, packed inside this book.
If I am Honest by Sidhartha Mallya is a captivating memoir written in candid language. He deliberately poked our minds to make awareness about mental health. The thing which we deliberately avoided to address, it's still a social stigma. From his childhood abroad to today, in everything he opened up here, he didn't shy, he consumed bravery and rewarded himself with courage and honesty, and self-love.
He tells us his life story from his childhood. He tells us how small things can make a deep gash in our minds without giving us any hints. Page after page he tells us about his life, his family, his father, and everything in a conversation narrative. How people filters thought of having privileged life, and how this kind of thought created ignorance makes sense. These thinking patterns create more harm than anything else, it makes people more lonely than ever.
I love reading about his kind of life journey, I love looking at the glimpses of loneliness and how Sidhartha overcame the darkest alley of his life and freed himself.
Sidhartha talks about the implications of parents' divorce on mental wellness, the child and the parents both suffer in this case and we are practically reluctant to talk about it, I think everyone must learn to deal with such issues. His ongoing chit-chat then reveals about his school, dyslexia, OCD, and how casually he talks about his ego, vulnerability, his fear, which makes me absolutely awestruck, honestly speaking this flaunting honesty captured my heart.
It's a painstakingly brilliant book that emphasized his pain, uncovered his sufferings, and how he came back to life.
Everyone who is suffering or not must read this book.
When I dived into the pages of "If I'm Honest" by Sidhartha Mallya, I wasn't quite prepared for the emotional journey that awaited me. This 2023 memoir sheds light on the life of Sidhartha Mallya, the son of the well-known Indian businessman Vijay Mallya, and his candid account of his battles with mental health.
Unlike my initial expectations of a tale centered around glamour and privilege, Mallya's memoir took me by surprise. With raw vulnerability, he paints a picture of his struggles with depression, OCD, and alcohol abuse. His willingness to open up about these challenges struck a chord, reminding me that mental health knows no bounds.
In sharing his story, Mallya doesn't just focus on his personal struggles; he delves into the impact of his parents' divorce on his formative years and the complex relationship he shares with his father. His words are heartfelt, and the emotions are palpable as he navigates the complexities of his family dynamics.
"If I'm Honest" is not just a memoir; it's an eye-opener. Mallya's writing style is both engaging and sincere, offering a window into his experiences with a touch of humor and depth. The book isn't afraid to discuss difficult topics, and that honesty is both refreshing and enlightening.
One of the aspects that resonated with me deeply was Mallya's acknowledgment of his privilege. His transparency about how wealth and status can often act as barriers to seeking help is a stark reminder of the challenges many face in seeking mental health support.
This memoir is more than just Sidhartha Mallya's story; it's a contribution to the larger conversation about mental health. It speaks to anyone who has felt the weight of mental health issues or the stigma attached to them. "If I'm Honest" not only offers solace to those struggling but also emphasizes the importance of seeking help and breaking the silence surrounding mental health.
In conclusion, "If I'm Honest" is a powerful memoir that transcends societal boundaries and invites readers into Sidhartha Mallya's journey of self-discovery and healing. It's a poignant reminder that no one is immune to the challenges of mental health and that the road to recovery is paved with courage, vulnerability, and the strength to ask for help.
One of the things that Sidhartha emphasized early in the book is that this is not a self-help book. It is rather a memoir of his life regarding what issues he had faced throughout his life and anything that has impacted his mental wellbeing. Truly, the book is an honest account, where he has shared a lot of personal and past traumas and what he is currently dealing with, without any filters; there’s something wrong he has done, he accepts it; something he thinks is wrong, he mentions it without the fear of being judged. At least that’s what I think. For instance, he chose to address the mindset that makes people believe that people who come from a life of perceived privilege or people having a certain financial, religious or ethnic background are immune to mental health issues. I know, some people reading this right now may think so, and will continue to do so. But that is exactly why I think mental health needs to be talked about, even if a greater part of society isn’t aware of it, even if an even greater part of society can’t afford it, even if an even greater part of society treats those having mental health-related issues with stigma and discrimination. We need to start taking care of our mental health just like we care for our physical health; we need to normalize seeking help while going through mental disorders, just like we do in the cases of other medical conditions like diabetes or injury.
What this book did for me is help me better express myself and my mental health-related issues. It also kind of identified a range of feelings and behaviour and actions for me that are most probably the result of some mental disorder. According to me, identifying and acknowledging an issue lifts up half of your baggage from your shoulders. Now, you have a direction and you can start working on the issue without falling prey to the disorder. So, the next time you recognise a pattern as Sidhartha says, you can immediately identify, ‘Oh, that’s my perfectionism and I can let it pass without the automatic reaction of a compulsion.’
When you read the title of the book, you know it’s going to be brutally honest, which in my opinion is best especially when we are talking about mental health. ‘If I’m Honest’ by Sidhartha Mallya is a first-hand account of the author of his mental health journey aka self-work.
Despite his glamorous and satisfied material life, Sidhartha has felt a lack in the emotional connections. He has shared all about it in the various chapters of the book. From depression to OCD, police cases to college bunks, he shares it all.
I loved it that the author is honest even though that means showing vulnerability at times. It encourages the reader to have a deep look at their feelings (especially if they have faced mental health problems).
The book is inclined towards learning and actionable steps through stories of the author. One of the best ways to talk about mental health is through sharing your own stories.
The author has shown the importance of therapy in his recovery journey to which I totally agree. Therapy when done with an open mind and the right person can bring tremendous change in yourself and give you a new direction.
I have been through some problems that the author has talked about. While I was reading it, I felt I cannot express it in any better way than this.
At some points, the book, learnings, and even actionable steps might sound too idealistic or philosophical to you. Therefore, it is important to understand it is a personal account and always take what vibes with you, leaving behind everything else.
One more thing I appreciate about this book is that it normalizes talking about our feelings and being our authentic selves.
IN A NUTSHELL: ‘If I’m Honest’ is an honest account of the author’s personal journey, normalizing the topic of mental health enough for our society (much-needed)
Recommend? YES! If you are up for reading an emotional journey of a depression survivor or want to learn to express or want to know more about mental health topics (especially how it feels) such as depression, OCD, guilt, and even drinking problems, this is the book you should pick.
🧠 Believe it or not we all face events that single handedly ruins our mental health and prosperity. The period might vary with person to person, as for some it might be temporary, for others it might be chronic, though one thing remains the same, i.e the damage it does.
🧠 The book is a conversation about Sidhartha's journey around a number of different events throughout his life that have impacted his mental health. These have ranged all the way from depression and OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) to feelings of guilt and loneliness.
🧠 Siddharth shares his experience and events that has changed him throughout the past half decades, and with the medium of this book, he tries to convey the significance of mental health and how he has achieved it, through hit and trial.
📌 The book has been written with an transparent and simplest approach in order to bring the authenticity of a honest conversation between the author and the readers, while also sharing his journey of quitting alcohol.
📌Focusing upon spreading awareness and bringing the honest conversation one can definately relate to. Also sharing some advice and ascendotes for the readers in between the stories.
📌 A Memoir that captures moments of Triumph and Victory in a person's life and the influence through which others can inspire. It's a well articulated book of personal development, not self help.
📌 If you're someone who is looking for some honest conversation and confession, journey through tough phases and learn how to overcome unstable mental health, then this might be a good fit for you bookshelf.
If I'm Honest by Sidhartha Mallya is the author's mental health journey. He has, by penning down his own stories, created a connection with readers as a feeling of relatability seeps in. The very thought that we aren't alone in facing the ordeals of life, which sometimes cant be explained in simple words to people, neither is it always understood as well, really helps.
Sidhartha has mentioned how for a long time he didn't realise he was facing depression. This gives us a broad understanding of the term through the book. His life in India and further abroad both contributed to his state of mind. From his parent's divorce to an identity crisis, often being known only as the Mallya heir, various things impacted him. He even talks about how often we are even denied the feeling of depression by stating that we are well privileged. This leads to more suffocation of thoughts.
The best parts for me were which highlighted the misconception of OCD. The author pointed out the various different types of OCD and further explained how we often tend to feel guilty whenever we are happy. Out of this feeling we overwork to prove our worth and do acts of service out of guilt rather than selflessness.
The review, might be a but unorganized but infact it is so because of the emotions I'm feeling after reading the book. As I mentioned earlier, the feeling of relatability and being able to recognise your own behavioral pattern through someone's else accounts makes me feel a little more powered through in life. It makes me feel that it'll be okay. Plus Sidhartha's practical solutions to overcoming such phases of life, is something I'm thinking to apply in reality too.
How often we judge people basis the materialistic wealth they own, or affluent background they belong to. Does this mean those individuals can't suffer mentally. The world has become too materialistic/ transactional that everything gets attach to the materialistic possession.
This is the insight reader will feel when they will read this book by Mr. Mallya. Though, being an Indian we have always seen him some who hails from an affluent background and could not gauge about the suffering someone can go through mentally. This book deals about the personal life, childhood traumas and how it has impacted the life of Siddhartha. How long he has dealt with it and not acknowledge the effect of the depression on his earlier years of his life.
The book unravels many facets of his life which I think general public is unaware about. The book has been written in a brisk form without digress the authenticity of the story. The memoir is light hearted read. Enjoyed my time reading this.
A memoir by Siddhartha Mallya, If I'm Honest is a wonderful book dealing majorly with the life of a billionaire kid who takes the challenges of life head-on and makes a path less travelled by for himself. He openly pens down his mental health, OCD, family crisis, relationships and other personal details in the book. Showing a way how he makes a place of his own in life, he also tells us how childhood guilts never leave you.
Being a drunkard, Siddharth tells us how he decides to leave drinking alcohol and fight it back. This is the chapter I loved the most. It's not only inspirational but also motivating. Also, I think that he has done a remarkable job speaking about his problems, crisis and situations so that a lot of us can learn from him. One thing more I would love to mention is that he is nowhere in the book giving lectures on how to live life instead he is telling us how he lived his, and what can one make out of it for his own, to live a better one.
This happens to be one of the memoir I enjoyed reading, maybe because of the familiarity we share.
It was a decent memoir nothing to write home about but perhaps that's because I already know about all the things he wrote about in this book. I bought this book at the airport since it looked interesting and I'm always interested in reading about other people's experience with mental health. I suppose I expected too much of this book but this is not bad at all. I don't know what kind of person this guy is but he can't be all that bad if he really was being 'honest' in this book. I give it 3/5 stars.
If I m honest by @sidmallya is a memoir where he’s spoken about his journey of mental health and how he coped with it and has been constantly working on mental wellness. Ps, it’s not a self-help workbook or a book that tells you how to work on yourself, but it's his journey which may motivate you too to accept that you need to keep a check on mental wellness and if need be take good care of it and work on it 🤍🙃 Side note with this book I made my hattrick this week 🥳
A honestly well written book. He is so open about his. Not even a man on the street will be so open about his. He acknowledges his frailties and the methods adopted to overcome them. He doesn't, even remotely, accuse anyone who has been disloyal to him.
The language of the book is minus any flamboyance and jargon. Overall it was a wonderful read. This book is a great read for everyone especially those having psychological blocks.
Sidhartha Mallya, born into India’s renowned business dynasty, appeared to live a charmed life. However, behind the facade, he grappled with inner turmoil. Despite his achievements in acting and upcoming film projects, he faced unexpected depression in 2016. In his honest and witty memoir, Sidhartha candidly shares his struggles with depression, OCD, his parents’ divorce, and how he triumphed over these challenges.
This book unravels the complex layers behind a seemingly charmed life within India's influential business circles. The book's power lies in Mallya's unreserved candor and emotional transparency. He fearlessly delves into the challenges he faced, openly discussing his encounters with depression, navigating OCD, the impact of his parents' separation, and his decision to abstain from alcohol.
More than a chronicle of personal struggles, "If I'm Honest" serves as a beacon of hope. The memoir is a testament to resilience, offering valuable lessons and inspiration for anyone navigating their own mental health journey.
