Look, my friends will tell you that I always fall for the good guys. For the sweet guys. For the Matt Donovans. I want the boy next door. However, I can assure you that I also like a touch of arrogance and it seems that when there is a psychotic layer that I can understand and appreciate I'm a goner too. I'm a little sad that this isn't one of May's finished series. Waiting for the next one is gonna be quite hard, although this cliffhanger wasn't as terrible as the previous one.
What I liked about this book is that May took her time to have her characters deal with the aftermath of everything that has happened. I can imagine that some people prefer a little more action and are not a huge fan of our main characters spending so many chapters apart, but I loved all those raw and rough emotions. I loved how they were all dealing with grief and trauma and family in their own way. I loved how every character was forced to bare their soul for us.
And yes, that does mean that the plot is progressing only slowly, but I really don't mind. I like that this story is building and burning so slowly. It feels like what I'm reading is real, realistic. Most girls don't get over guys lying to them so easily, not even if they love her very much and did it to protect her. And most guys are not enthusiast about sharing their one true love with their best friends, not even if they love her very much and only want her to be happy.
And although the plot was progressing slowly, there was that constant tension throughout the book. We knew at some point something would happen. We knew that the danger wasn't gone. We especially knew because May did leave some reminders for us along the way. And this game and story clearly has very high stakes and a lot of people involved. We got very few answers in this book, we got a lot of new questions and I got a little more addicted.
This second one is a bit better (slightly), for a filler book.
It remains severely lacking in the “dark” genre and is definitely not at all psychotic as the title would suggest. IMO KM is like Ellie - more fluffy than dark (to be fair, I rather like her fluffy light reads).
The FMC remains idiotic and naive. Being wealthy and privileged does not equate to a lack of common sense (the converse seems to be what KM is trying to convey here).
There was no character growth. The defensive intro is grating - she doesn’t have to be a badass, but does she have to be a dumbass?
I repeat, don’t feed into the misogyny.
Even after she witnesses a killing and then accidentally killing (insert eye roll) someone, she’s still the same, albeit with more whining - SIGH.
The sexy times were meh; too juvenile and boring.
The MMC were somewhat more interesting, though again KM seems to be one note (too similar to Blindly Indicted or whatever that prisoner one is called). KM delves a little more into the torture aspect, but then it goes fade to black, per usual - as I said “dark-lite”. I have yet to see any Alpha behavior as stated in the intro.
It was a meh read with a few quality issues (typos etc - could use a better editor), but whatevs. As a filler second novel it was ok. I think KM is trying, so applaud the effort even if it was a miss for me. IMO she is a much better rom-com author than dark.
Maybe I’ll read the next one if in a slump, and enough months pass by that I’ll (hopefully) forget all about this one!

Highly anticipated second in this series and it was just as engrossing as Mania. The majority of this book was Ellie dealing with the aftermath of what happened in Mania, and she's understandably, not in a good place mentally. She's clearly struggling, but is trying to find her strength through herself first, which is admirable. Her relationship with the guys are also in a tumultuous state with a lot of anger, guilt, and regret. I am looking forward to seeing more progress on the relationship front, and I enjoy the fact that they are so clearly over the moon for Ellie.
Predictably, this ends on a cliffhanger; one that I'm really curious about and another reveal that is rather perplexing. I'm looking forward to reading Pandemonium next, and hope that it'll continue to be as exciting. Solid series so far and would definitely recommend.
3,5 stars This one was better than the first one, i liked the fmc Ellie growth. How she stood up for herself and made it clear that the lies where not okay. The guys had improved since the the first book, but i had wanted them to prove to her that she could trust them with actions. They where kinda stupid to keep all that for themselves. I get that they wanted to protect her but it´s never gonna be good to hide it for that long. damn the ending, it leaves us hanging
Too many chapters of separation between Ellie and the guys. I totally agree that there should have been time spent apart for Ellie to figure out her stuff, but all of it should not have been on page. The reveal should have been sooner so more progress could have been made building back up their relationships. I kinda hate myself for saying this, but I am interested enough to read the next book. Frustrating sums up this book.
I loved the first one, but I found the pacing in this one really off. Also found it a lot more predictable. You will have to read this one to make sense of the third, and I understand why the pacing is different but it became a bit of a mopeathon.
Katie May did it again. She left me speechless and a little frustrated (but only because of that cliffhanger lol.)
I am OBSESSED with this series so far. I’ve never read a reverse harem where the FMC and her guys are virgins and I’m loving it. I’m actually considering moving this to the top of my long list of favorite tropes. I’m not a big fan of the virgin trope and this was right up my ally, so I’m not actually surprised about that.
There were times where I really wanted to shake the guys and have them confess their love to Ellie, but I can understand where they are at the moment, especially with all of the crazy things happening. They’re also SUPER possessive of her. And that just makes it even more perfect.
If you have not yet read Mania, then you NEED IT!! I think this is Katie May’s best work 😌
From book one, we jump right into book two and boy it does not disappoint
After Ellie’s encounter with The Divine One, she finds herself back at Groves Academy and in the company of Landon, Dominic, Zane, Ryker and Beckett, but what Ellie is confronted with is the secrets, lies and deception of what they kept from her, the truth, their betrayal cutting her deep, they made the decision not to tell her, they did what they thought was best for her, to protect her, to keep her safe, but all they did was end up hurting her, and what cuts them up more is when she walks away from all of them.
Landon, Dominic, Zane, Ryker and Beckett are all hurting over the decision that was made, some regretting the choice to keep Ellie in the dark, if they could go back and tell her, they would, but they can’t undo what has already been done, the pain visceral, it’s tearing their friendship apart from the inside out.
They give Ellie the space she needs, in order to wrap her head around what she’s learnt, to make sense of the betrayal, the chaos in her mind, weighing her body down, along with her own secrets, it’s hurting her deeply, physically, mentally and emotionally, to the point she is hurting herself leaving Landon, Dominic, Zane, Ryker and Beckett worried as to what may tip her over the edge completely, taking Ellie away from them.
The Paragons of Prosperity have a deep hold on Ellie, and have set forth another task for her to complete, at first she is defiant, yet she has no choice but to accept the inevitable knowing what’s at risk.
After a moment of unbridled passion with Ryker, she tells him that she wants the truth, that she wants to know everything. Landon, Dominic, Zane, Ryker and Beckett share with Ellie the truths, dark secrets exposed, and there betrayal of her trust, in return they want from Ellie full disclosure and transparency of what she’s been keeping from them, and it’s absolutely heartbreaking, but a weight has been lifted off of her shoulders, even though they are on the same page.
Landon, Dominic, Zane, Ryker and Beckett are all in love with Ellie, they each express there love for her in different ways, only they don’t know she feels the same way about them too, too afraid to share how she really feels about all of them, yet there are moments she shares with some of them that give her clarity about her feelings towards all of them, but for all there jealous, compulsive yet obsessive behaviours towards her they each want to claim her for there own, yet she wants all of them, yet she won’t know how they’ll react once they learn this truth.
Ellie comes to understand that the Paragons of Prosperity know about The Kings of Grove Academy and vice versa, that they have contingency plans in place should anything happen to them, but it’s the last two chapters that will have you on the precipice, the cliffhanger tipping you over the edge.
This story is told from different POV, it will take you on a wild ride, having you turn page after page. This book had me from beginning to end, it told a telling story, this author definitely knows how to write.
This book contains triggers, please heed them. This book has it all slow burn romance, dark humour, roller coaster of emotions, drama, action, love, loyalty, acceptance, friendship, jealousy, madness, mayhem, intrigue, revenge, vengeance, violence, adrenaline seeking suspense, twists, turns, truths.
Reading this story, it enables the readers to really connect with the characters, and as the story unfolds the readers see the development and growth from the characters singularly and together.
Reeling from the aftereffects of the first book, Ellie is trying to figure out who she is now and how she's dealing with her trauma from all the information she learned and experienced from POP. In this book, we got to see Ellie transform from an innocent, naive girl to someone who starts standing up for herself and becomes more independent and stronger. Her relationship with the guys changes ever since the information she found out in the first book. She starts to pull away from the guys and the guys give her space until she's ready. After she's ready to reconcile with them, they tell her EVERYTHING, and she becomes 10x closer to them than she was before. Other than this, there isn't much plot, but the ending sets up for the plot to continue in the next book.
Favorite quotes/scenes:
-"She represents everything I want for myself. Light. Happiness. Peace. Yes...Peace. Serenity. Tranquility. She encompasses all those terms, and then some. Being with her banishes some of the shadows that have made themselves home in my eyes. I don't fell as beastly anymore when she's staring at me with awe fascination, a look I never want to see dissipate from her gaze." (Landon)
-"Maybe I can convince Zane to kidnap them with me so we can create matching friendship bracelets out of the skin of our enemies and then plan a murder together. Murder always makes them happy." (Beckett)
-"Maybe I've always known that she doesn't belong at just one man. Hell, she doesn't belong to any man. We belong to her—and once I made that distinction in my head, the rest of the puzzle pieces fell into place. A girl like her deserves to be worshipped and revered, and the best way to do that is to give her a goddamn harem. " (Beckett)
-"I don't like anyone's attention being on my girl except for mine. And maybe Landon's. Okay, Dominic's as well. And sometimes Beckett's. And Ryker, because he pulls of 'moody asshole with a heart of gold' so well. But that's it. I'm putting my foot down on five." (Zane)
-"How can I tell her that I don't just care about her, but love her more than anything in this whole entire world? It's a twisted type of love, because I'm a twisted man, but it's the only pure thing I have in my life...But the love I feel for her? The way she can bring me to my knees with a single word? It's so fucking beautiful, that I could get weepy." (Ryker)
-"I've never claimed to be a good man, but Ellie? She sees something in me, something in all of us, that the rest of the world fails to notice. While the students of Grove Academy see nothing but beasts and monsters, she sees five broken souls capable of being saved. I don't even know if I want saving, but I do know that I need the light she provides. It banished some of the shadows in my soul, making the world a little brighter." (Dominic)
Not bad, but I also don’t feel like much happened. Ellie is struggling, she gets a new big task, the guys share secrets with her, there’s minimal relationship growth (because she spends a good chunk of the book angry at them), there’s some drama because not all the guys are wholly on the same rh page, and then BOOM it ends with a twist.
The good things about this book were: 1) super easy to fly through. I read it in a couple of hours. 2) the guys are still as obsessed with Ellie as ever & I am so here for it. 3) I actually liked seeing Ellie’s struggle. I appreciate that her strength is growing in a more subtle way as she deals with the wild stuff happening to her.
What I did not love about this book was: 1) that it very much felt like a filler book. The characters got fleshed out a little more, which was nice, but for a 300 page book I don’t feel like the plot or the romance were advanced nearly enough. 2) that the guys still aren’t on the same page yet about wanting an rh. I looooove a slow burn, but 2 books into a 3 book series, the guys should have had a serious conversation about what they want. Maybe they all wouldn’t agree yet, but they haven’t even sat down and discussed it on the page. Most of them have come around to the idea without that, but still. They’ve got to communicate at least a little bit.
Overall, I liked it but did not love it. Still very interested in the series & will definitely pick up book 3. A great harem with a dynamic I love, and I just know they’re going to end up amazing once they all finally get together. Just wish this book hasn’t felt so much like filler.
I gave this book/series 4 stars because the potential is there. The plot is there. This can end up being a top series for me. HOWEVER, it’s incredibly aggravating to have to wait so long between books. There’s so much time wasted on inner dialogue that there’s been no real time to develop relationships between the characters. Which is exactly what’s happening. This is a reverse harem, and she has yet to confess her real feelings for any of them, they haven’t really confessed theirs for her, and she’s kissed two of them. That’s it. Nothing else has happened in regards to their relationships. Two books in and you’d think something more would have happened by now. I’m hoping it all comes together in book three and hope that I don’t forget about this series when book three does come out. I’ve never been so frustrated over a series that’s not complete before lol. But I’m not giving up yet! And I get it, it’s a SLOW SLOW burn which I’m all for, but SOMEONE needs to confess their feelings. She has no idea how they really feel. She finally knows why they’re so protective of her, but the communication has to be better. The guys need to really really prove themselves and I’m waiting very impatiently for that to happen lol. Ellie’s character has come a long long way though, she’s stronger but also facing the fact that she’s dealing with trauma and some mental illness. I guess I was hoping to have more answers and progress made by the end of book two before going into book three, but I’m left with more questions and waiting for everything to come together. I do enjoy this authors style of writing. And I’m sure she has a plan to wow us all. Clearly I’m just really salty about that cliff hanger and having to wait so long for the next one to come out 😅. This series is totally worth the read though!!! Which again, is why I gave it four stars because I NEED MORE.

Ugh this series always leaves me feeling depressed and just low vibrational. Have only continued to read for the boys, mainly Zane and Ryker, but honestly this might be my last read of the series. As a frequent dark romance reader, I love this genre because it’s thrilling, adventurous, and entertaining…however this book is just a literal mopeathon that left me more annoyed than anything. The FMC has not failed in being cringey to me since the first book, and the plot was at such a slow crawl that this was clearly just a filler book which is so lazy to me from a reader standpoint because it shows you care more about getting extra page views then actually telling a good story. This is the first series I’ve read from this author and usually give them a 2-series minimum before I decide if I don’t like the author’s style or not, but having left this book with such an icky feeling I don’t think I’m willing to give another series a try. This was a definite 1.5 star for me but I’m rating at 3 just because I don’t like totally bombing an author’s hard work. Just praying in the future Katie learns how to balance dark with entertaining in the future.
I love dark, I love thrillers and I love me some supper sexy serial killers (in books only). Ms. May has such an amazing talent of letting her words flow onto the pages and allowing the reader to get lost in this story. I appreciate that Ellie is falling apart and keeping away from her Bestest Boy Friends Ever, she is not all trusting and questions everything. And she is scared as hell of what is going on around her but what does she do to help herself heal, goes to Self Defense class and learns to defend herself (you go girl!). These men of hers are wrecks and totally F'd up in the head. At lease two of them are, you know who you are Zane and Ryker; we see you. But we also know that in your f'd up minds you are doing this for love and this in turn makes you more appealing and so sexy. Ok, so now we get to who I don't trust... Fischer (sorry, not yet bud), Mr. Moreau (obviously) and Roy (mmm, douche) and I am bit iffy on the Roomies. And now we reach the cliffhanger, Sorry Ms. May to answer your question, NOT A 5. More along the lines of a 9/10. Shock factor 100!!!
I was warned that this series was a slow burn, but I have to admit that it has 100% kept my full attention. Character building is so important to me and Katie does not disappoint. I have fallen head over heels for each of Ellie’s guys. Their love, loyalty and dedication to her is over the top even though they are a group of psychos. Ellie’s character is evolving and growing and I am ready to see the badass that she will become. I can’t wait to get my hands on the third book when it releases after the cliffhanger ending of this one. I just hope the boys can get over their possessive nature and learn to share soon as I would like to see more heat levels between Ellie and her guys in the next installment. Definitely a good read, and I highly recommend for a good storyline with a plot twist at the end.
I am thrilled that we finally found some of the backstories for these characters. That was the only thing missing from Mania, but I do understand better why those stories needed to wait to be told.
I am very appreciative of the role that mental health plays in Psychotic, especially the depiction of Ellie's depression. Her mantra of it being a chemical imbalance and not something wrong is a powerful message that more folks need to read and understand.
I am concerned about how the guys are going to come together with Ellie. By this point in the story, I would've liked to see more progression in the friends to lovers area. That is moving slower than I like. It was nice to see a couple of the guys break out of their shell, even if they're all still keeping the biggest secret of all from Ellie: how incredibly in love they each are.
What a crazy ride. This book continues where one leaves off. I find myself a little frustrated with Elle in this book. Yes, she went through a lot in the last book and yes, she is still going through a lot, but, she takes a road without even giving anyone a chance to speak to her. All the while she has never said a word even with them asking her for information. The story continues to move along and we learn more about their past and friendships. There are so many twists and turns throughout this book that at times leaves you shocked. As with all of Katie May’s books that I have read it is extremely well written and developed. We get to the end of this book and have an extremely shocking turn of events. I absolutely cannot wait to read what is going to happen next.
The story is good and the character development is excellent given that you get the point of view of each of the male leads as well as the female lead. I detest Cliffhangers and that's why I've waited to read this one until the entire series was out, but it is so filled with misery that it's hard to take in a large dose so binge reading is mood affecting and not a positive way. Besides that my main problem with this storyline is how frequently the author recycles plot devices. We're on the 4th or 5th kidnapping now. I'm a little disappointed they haven't figured this shit out and how to keep it from happening it's just so repetitive but so much of the plot devices including the relationship portion of it are recycled over and over and over again. Author needs to freshen this up before I could give it four stars.
secret society in the back ground hurting uni students
Who will save Elle ? She has amazing groups of 5 close friends that seam not all there but have there own demons they have survived from and all live her in there own ways she is at uni and has passed the trials of the pop secret society of her town but at a personal cost she can’t seam to get back on track . Lost in depression and self harm ( not few triggers for those of u ) she can’t seam to be her self back before some horrific trama happened, eventually she is trying to forgive her five friends with unique skill set, and try to rebuild her life only to be thrown again to towards the end of the book and leaves us on a cliff but not for long we hope.
After the events of the first book I was desperate to know what happened next to Ellie after what happened with POP and The Divine One. Ellie goes through a lot of trauma and she doesn't know who to trust or believe. The 5 guys in her life have kept secrets from her and she's devastated. She goes through depression and self harming and she is also really scared of POP. I love this series and I hope that in the next book Ellie is able to grow from all that she has experienced and get stronger. The boys are desperately trying to show her they are on her side and will protect her. The cliffhanger at the end was wow! I was not expecting that. I have my suspicions on who the divine one is, but I can't wait for the 3rd book for answers!
The next book is too far away. This one ended on quite the cliffhanger and it is going to be agony to wait to see what happens. This book is full of emotional angst while Ellie comes to term with what has happened to her. A little action between her and Ryker and some kissing with a couple of others. The relationships are slow to develop as the author seems to be building the plot. I would like to see more develop between Ellie and her men in a quicker manner, however I appreciate how much the author is building up the story. Surely there will be more than three stories since Ellie has five guys.
I honestly don’t know why I did this to myself but I had every hope this book would maybe redeem the atrocity that was book 1 but my god this was awful.
Nothing happened. Literally, nothing happened. A little in the beginning, and then some at the end but omg this was literally all filler.
In case you think I’m kidding I’m going to just reemphasize this: nothing. happened.
And the author isn’t kidding when she says “slow burn” because I’m still waiting for someone to light the match.
This was agonizing. I’ll honestly probably forget all about this series before book 3 even comes out and I’m more than fine with that.
I gave the first book a 5, and while I am still loving this series, I think this one just had a bit too much inner dialogue about the same thing. The guys' inner thoughts were constantly about their undying devotion to Ellie. After a while, it just gets a bit repetitive, so I end up skipping g paragraphs. That being said, we do get a little more info on how this whole POP cult works, and it answers how so many people can die, but now cause alarm in the community. Plus, in this book, we are finally seeing some of the guys act on their love for Ellie!! It's about darn time... So far, this is my fav read of the year
First, I LOVE that this author added a "Previously On.." section so I could remember what happened where we left off. For years I was wanting this to avoid wasting time going back to refresh my memory. Kudos to May for doing what others failed to.
As for the story, I understand that Ellie needed time to make herself be okay by herself. Gain some semblance of independence and self sufficiency. However, the execution of this was a bit drawn out, making me bored for half the book.
But once the boys 'were back in town' so to speak, things picked up a bit.
Now, I am excited to see what happens next and what this cliffhanger has to say for itself.
Probably not the best word considering the villain lol , but for the story ? Perfect ! We see so much growth and strength from Ellie this book and get to know the guys more ! Loved this book , this author wove a tale of strength , forgiveness , darkness and a real gritty view of the human condition . There’s a connection and understanding that I got to feel with Ellie as she navigated through her emotions and battled her way through the darkness of her own mind as well as the villains in this book . Fantastic edition to the series , can’t wait for the next book !
I hate Ellie. I like the plot overall. Hard to believe the guys are in high school but there isn’t much about the school anyway so it’s easy to forget. But yeah, Ellie was pathetic. There were a couple times a thought we’d see some growth- some hints and reactions leading up to some serious character development. But, then she’d devolve into being pathetic again. I couldn’t stomach it and skimmed through more than half of the book to see how it ends. The cliffhanger wasn’t strong enough for me to want to read the next installment.
This book has more angst than the last one, but it feels natural. After the things Ellie went through in book one, I like that she is reacting to it. She went through, and is still going through traumatic events, and she’s learning how to deal with that as well as figuring out who she can trust. The guys need a wake up call, some more than others, to see how Ellie feels about them all and how they act around her (*ahem* Dominic *ahem*). I’m really curious about everything that’s going on in the town with POP and such! Can’t wait for the next one!
This book … gave me heart palpatations!! I love all the guys but they really just need to open up, sit, talk and tell the truth about their feelings. This book gave me all the feels, excitement, confusion, sadness and anger!! Ellie has had her eyes opened to the darkness that surrounds her and the secrets that her guys have been keeping from her. I liked seeing how Mania came about, and seeing Ellie and the guys relationships start to grow and develope. I'm very curious and a little scared by the ending. I can’t wait to see what happens next!
This book was okay.... But they really weren't together and everything was a mess.... Her roommates had like three pages yet they jump all over the guys and just know she is a mess.... Everyone in this book was a mess... I just couldn't get into it. I skipped around and almost DNF.. everyone was blaming themselves and was a hot mess. With no sight to getting better. It lasted to long ... And right when the sun starts to peak out for everyone Bam cliff hanger, kidnapping and one getting hit by a car and the rest are clueless. 🤦🏼♀️
I love this series. I love how obsessed the guys are. I love Ellie because she’s GROWING, and she’s not one to hold on resentment towards the guys or vice versa. They make human errors, but it’s normal especially with them being teenagers. I can’t wait until everyone comes to realization that they need each other more than they knew. Deep down all the guys know how this will end with them sharing Ellie, but it’s still cute how they are possessive with her. I want them all to be happy 💕
