Writer and reader of unusual books. Susana Imaginário is a misfit from Portugal. She now lives in Ireland with her husband and their extremely spoiled pups. Her hobbies include reading (a lot), playing board games, hanging upside down, poking around ancient ruins, talking to trees and being tired. Timelessness combines mythology and slipstream fiction with a generous dose of dark humour and psychology.
The combination of the narration and writing was spot on.
I also loved the title of this work - Anachrony - just from the work itself it is so apt but I also like how it nods to the overall "Timelessness" title of the series.
Would recommend to readers of fantasy and general/literary fiction alike. Powerful narrative voice and a story that spoke to me.
I was honored to receive an advance reader copy of Anachrony, with no obligation to leave a review. But really, how could I not? It was fantastic. Am I a bit biased because it centers on one of my favorite characters from the Timelessness series? I tend to think that actually elevated my hopes for it, and the story ended up exceeding my expectations. Anachrony is book 3.5 in this series. As with the rest of the books, it answers questions we were left with previously, as well as presenting more wonders and mysteries along the way. I was drawn to this series when the first book, Wyrd Gods, was released, due to Greek and Norse mythology being interests of mine. But I stayed for all of that and more. The worlds that Susana has built, the complex characters, the perfectly timed way she lets us learn more about their motivations and personalities - it really is brilliant. Every book leaves you satisfied, while also excited for the next to be released. If you're caught up on the series, you must read Anachrony. It's the perfect interlude in between books 3 and 4. I know you're all wondering what the epilogue in book 3 was about, and this gives you the answer. If you haven't read the rest of the series yet, please know that you don't have to be familiar with mythology to enjoy it. These books open up a place where your mind can dive in and be surrounded by an intricate world with highly entertaining characters. Who can resist that?
Anachrony is, in a way, the story that fits between the gaps left by Nephilim's Hex. The ending of book 3 had left me with so many questions about Arianh and I'm so happy that Susana decided to publish this short story because it answers them all in a magical, heartbreaking, satisfying, and fascinating way.
I loved all the books in the Timelessness series, but this one felt different. More intimate, emotional, and intense. It was a joy reading this story and the ending left me crying and aching for book 4!
I want to thank the author for entrusting me with this ARC. All opinions expressed here are my own.
I picked Anachrony up because it was recommended by a friend, but I don't feel comfortable giving this a fixed rating given this clearly shouldn't be read outside of the context of the broader Timelessness series.
Still: I enjoyed the smoothness of the writing, and the multiple references to pagan mythologies have increased my interest in the main Timelessness series. My feelings are more reserved when it comes to the usage of time-travel/time loops, but that's because... I'm just always going to be wary of that at this point. Regardless, I'm more curious than not to see if and how it's used in the main series as well.
I received a free digital copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Anachrony is a novella that belongs to Timelessness series and it's set after Nephilim's Hex and prior to upcoming fourth instalment in the series. It follows the story nicely and answers some questions I've been left with and opens some more in whe way.
I absolutely loved every book in the series and this one is no exception to the rule. I think Susana's writing is getting more and more refined with each book and there's always something new to be excited about. I do belive I'm getting a bit boring with explaining how well her books are written but it certanly has to be said. Anachrony follows the series with the signature deep and detailed telling of the story, but this one still felt a bit different. It felt a bit more intimate than other novels. The story is more linear and it follows Arianh, who is one of my favourite characters. You get to know her a lot more, learn about her experiences and her way of thinking. The events of the book are deeply connected to her emotions, and that is what elevates this novella to the intimate level I mentioned earlier.
As all others books in the series, it's perfectly written down to every detail and it offers enjoyable yet emotional journey. Everything is done with precision, when it comes to the world (Niflheim), that is sligtly different that we are used to, and with character development.
Anachrony does compliment the series in a great way and I do belive it's an important addition to the series. Sometimes the in-between novellas don't do much to series, but in this case I think it's really not to be missed when picking Timelessness up.
With Anachrony, Susana Imaginário proves my suspicion that there is some kind of magic afoot with each new installment of the Timelessness series.
As the series has progressed, and with each new installment, Susana Imaginário has managed to knock me sideways with the brilliance of each new book, and I usually spend at least five minutes stunned over what I have read.
And this short little story did that again!
If you read the epilogue of Nephilim’s Hex and wondered “What’s that all about then?”, Anachrony fills in those gaps and answers those questions. It tells the story of what Arianh did next, a kind of Ariamh through the looking glass.
I have to say that Anachrony was not what I expected at all (which I should have expected, but there you go). The story takes place in Niflheim, but a different Niflheim than we are used to as things are not quite the same. In Anachrony, the story centres solely on Arianh and the subsequent events of what happens when she steps through the Chronodendron. This gives the novella a different feel to the rest of the series. With the focus being on one character the story is more linear in its execution, which works superbly in this instance and gives us a vivid picture of what Arianh is experiencing as she travels the world in which she finds herself.
In Anachrony, Susana Imaginário changes the perspective of the narrative, and my goodness is this effective for this story. It feels like we are experiencing the things that Arianh is experiencing, not only in terms of events, but also in relation to the emotions that she is experiencing, which makes the end of the story that little bit more emotive. It brings us closer to the feelings of disorientation that Arianh experiences as she journeys through Niflheim with only the Chronodendron for company.
I must apologise if I am being a little vague, but I want to stay away from the plot altogether as I think that the way to gain complete enjoyment from this book is to enter it blindly and let the story take you to where it is going without any pre-emptive knowledge of what lies inside the pages. However, what I can say is that Susana Imaginário handles the world building with her usual aplomb and style, and her characters remain vivid and evocative.
I have loved this series and I marvel at how Susana Imaginário continually wrong foots me with the shifting sands of her plot at each given moment. Just when I think I have an angle on the series and think that I have things pegged out in my head, she manages to pull the rug out from under my feet and introduce a new twist that sends all my counters flying in the air. Furthermore, I adore the ambiguity of it all, I mean, even the title of the book is ambiguous, and I am not sure whether the events in the book take place in the future or the past, similarly with the actual title of the series itself, which is kind of brought into sharp focus with the events in this story. I may be looking too deep into it, but this story has grabbed me, and I want to know more, whether it be about the mythology that she introduces and how that interweaves with the story or certain words that have been used and how they affect the story.
At the end of most of my reviews, I tend to say that if you haven’t read the Timelessness series you should go and check it out, and I am not going to fail you on this occasion either. Unfortunately, I will have to wait till next year until the story concludes, but I am so looking forward to seeing how Susana Imaginário will surprise me with that!

Susana Imaginario knocks another one out of the park! Timelessness fans will love this book. it really enhances the Timelessness story. Arianh is one of my favorite characters and this adds so much to her story arc. If you haven't picked up the Timelessness series yet I urge you to do so. it's a very original and well thought out story that will leave you eager to find out what happens next. If you have read this series you will LOVE this little book and what it adds to the sries
What seems at the outset like a nice little breather from the main storyline, this novella actually actually answers a lot of questions about the past/future of several of the main mortal(?) characters and, by the end, seems to be setting up something key for the next and final book. Bottom line, a great read that is also an indispensable one for fans of the series
It’s a quick read that answers some questions and fleshes out several of the characters. I really like the ways the series is playing with the concepts of Time and Fate.
Susana Imaginario’s prose just keeps getting better and better.
An amazing bridge between the third and fourth story:) I thoroughly enjoyed it, it offered a very immersive back story on the entire epic saga. The Audiobook was brilliantly narrated by Sarah Kempton and I listened to it all in one session:) To be honest I was so absorbed by it, that I hadn't noticed how quickly time had passed! I can't wait for Anamnesis:)

I read this novelette in a single seat because it was such an incredible story. This one is narrated in third person present tense, which gives the entire story a rim of uncertainty (as perceived by the character) that suits it very well.
If you read Book#3 (Nephilim's Hex), there is a scene in which Ariahn rushes against Chiron to get a hold of ambrosia. This novelette takes on from there, splitting from the main plot of Nephilim's Hex, following Ariahn through some incredibly revealing and plot-twisting events (all masterfully compressed into 75-or-so pages!), to tie right up the ending of Nephilim's Hex epilogue.
Something interesting is that Ariahn was always such a secondary character in the "main" books of Timelessness. Moreover, she was given little screen time and mostly presented from other character's biased PoVs. Here, she is the main character, and she'll strangle your heart into suffering alongside her for 75 pages. My guess is that the presentation of Ariahn in the other books was utterly intentional, meant for this one to break the reader's heart--and it is done so impressively. The author has a knack for tying up plot lines and adding jaw-dropping twists!
Something worth saying is that this novelette in particular follows a single character (so, just Ariahn), which makes it far more personal. Yes, there is this feeling (and knowledge from the previous books) that there is a large-scale stake--but Anachrony feels personal to Ariahn, and the stakes are Ariahn's. Because of that, I'd say it's darker than the other books--simply because the change in perspective is so well done.
If you're following the Timelessness series--you must read this one. The author put the audiobook free on her YouTube channel, so go get it! If you're new to the series, you may spoil yourself part of the books by reading this one first, but you'll experience Susana's incredible prose. Up to you! One way or another, this is a must read.
