This book was much more comprehensive and operational than other books on Ayurveda by western authors. I also appreciated that the author didn’t discuss weight loss at all. So many wellness books focus on weight loss as an answer to all our woes.
Great book with an introduction to the different rituals from the Ayurvedic tradition. Have already incorporated some into my daily life and definitely want to include more. Especially when it comes to food and seasonal living.
My self-care routine has been significantly lacking, and I want to start from a naturally derived path. I want something that makes sense for my life and my body. Often when I'm working on changing my patterns, I push too hard at first. The Ayurvedic Self-care Handbook gave great ways to adjust your routine without pushing yourself over an edge. It's a great place to start if you are looking for an Ayurvedic routine. The book is straight forward, provides a reasonable basis for each of the changes that it's asking for and it's got several steps to take. Each aspect of the book is positive and encouraging for anyone that wants to create a healthy lifestyle.
Realistyczne podejście, prostota i jasne wskazówki czynią tę pozycję godną polecenia każdemu, kto chciałby spróbować ajurwedy.
interesting but I don't think I'll be oiling my hair, ears or mouth every night before I go to bed. Some provocative concepts that seem a little too fat "out there" for me. Maybe in a few more years after I've become more enlightened
I've heard a lot about Ayurveda through my yoga studio, but this was the first book I've read about it. It's simply written, very straightforward, and I enjoyed the majority of the content. I resonate a lot with how we move in connection with the outdoors and the changing of seasons. Some of the rituals earned some askance glances (the morning rituals of oil in your ear, oil pulling, dry scrubbing, etc. etc. seems a bit much even for a singleton like me). But I incorporated some of the rhythms of the day over the weekend and felt much more accomplished and balanced than I have in awhile. I'm looking forward to addressing some insomnia and staying steady with my 3 pm meditations. A great, easy read to introduce you to this interesting concept.
I had high hopes for this book as a holistic health provider myself but wow this was triggering and yes definitely a beginners book! This could use some modernizing and should come with an eating disorder trigger. So much talk of the food for doshas and exercise in restricting eating pattern ways. Reader be warey if you have struggles with ED (also mention of ‘healthy induced vomiting’). The here and there cultural appropriations was irksome, it’s 2023 I think we all can agree it’s sensible to note sourcing from Indigenous people when we discuss Sage. Anyhow, there were a few great Ayurvedic practices in this book with great detailed explanations but it was primarily long winded paragraphs to lengthen word count and many many pages on how to breathe, meditations, and journal prompts.
A Big thank you to Netgalley, Sarah Kucera, and The Experiment for the ARC of this fabulous handbook!
Healing comes in many forms and what works for one will not always work for another, except when you get back to whole-body healing. The mind, body and emotional being has to be all in sync for our internal machines to work properly. The cogs and gears won’t maintain themselves.
This wonderful book covers everything you would need to know to obtain the best health possible. Not only does it offer in-depth explanations but it does so in a way that helps you to understand every layer of Ayurvedic Healing.
Ayurveda is considered the Yoga's sister science which is the study of the body. The book is an A to Z Reference book about Ayurveda and helpful for any Ayurvedic practitioner. Sarah introduces the origins and theory of this 5000 years practice. Then, Sarah explains the root of common life's discomforts based on the three types of Doshas. And finally, she shares meaningful rituals to add to our lives. The rituals are well explained and she shares useful advice to how incorporate them in our busy lives. More over, she added a helpful glossaries about the plants, terminology and more practical information.
A comprehensive handbook of Ayurvedic healing. Encourages proactive self-care through daily healing rituals that are accessible. The author offers detailed explanations of the three Doshas, typical challenges and how to support and heal the individual.
**I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review of this book.
If I was able to have one Ayurveda Book it would be this one. I love everything about it. I especially love how it is set up with Daily and Seasonal Rituals.
This was a weird book. Picked it up to fight boredom (and because I've listened to pretty much all Finnish self help books on Bookbeat).
A crossbreed of journaling prompts, ayurvedic theory, and self help tips, it's a mixed bunch. Explains three core concepts (vata, pitta, kapha), then proceeds with tons of tips on how to balance these three through morning, midday, and evening rituals. Word ritual used loosely; it can be anything from doing a yoga pose to making and consuming almond milk.
Some of these rituals sound possibly harmful. How about washing your eyes (actual eyes) with rosewater, or moisturizing them with oil drops? Though there is one notion reminding the reader not to neglect actual healthcare professionals' advise or medication, there were several red flag tips that could have used further warnings.
At least I know about vata, pitta, and kapha now, I guess.
I love studying ayurveda, and incorporate SOME ayurvedic principles into my life, and def follow some of the practices. I was eager to read this book, but I must admit - a lot of these practices are great for when you are on summer vacation or you don't have kids - a lot of time-consuming self-care practices (oil swishing, dry brushing, rubbing with oil before your bath, etc etc etc). I spent a week in an ayurvedic ashram in Southern India, and we participated in many of the morning rituals, and to do the full ones each day can take 2-3 hours....or more. So I def see this book as containing many authenic elements, BUT I would have preferred something more practical for living today.
4 STAR Ps.: Z pewnością chciałbym więcej, obficiej i o większym formacie i dużej wyraźnej czcionce. Dziękuję Autorce za wprowadzenie w Świat Ajurwedy! ;)
I loved this book! This is such a good antidote to the social media, obsessively busy society we currently live in. As a self confessed ‘ hippy ‘ I love how this book celebrates concepts such as yoga, moving with the natural rhythms of the body, cooking to cool or warm the body according to the time of year, using herbs to reduce Illness and healing stress with mindfulness. It’s also a great read if you practise yoga or meditation. I will be reading more of this topic partly due to this author. Also small enough to carry around and read on lunch breaks.
This book doesn't jump into tips and ideas to follow but starts with the basics of Ayurveda - which makes it very helpful to understand the body type and then work on any shortcomings or problems. This is a preventive science and for someone who does not want to read long scriptures and textbooks, this book is a blessing. The very concept of understanding your body type explains why some remedies work for one person and not for others.
If you’re looking for an understanding of how Ayurveda works with regards to caring for yourself, read this book. It focuses on rituals and simple ways you can care for yourself. Currently “self care” is a word that has been taken by advertising to get us to buy things or go have treatments. While some of those things are interesting and worthwhile, self care doesn’t require you to go to a spa or a treatment center. You can care for yourself at home, too. I really enjoyed this book.
Dr. Sarah Kucera, guest on episode 57 of the Radiate Wellness Podcast, is a chiropractor, yoga instructor, and Ayurveda practitioner. She finds that self-care is the most important aspect of health care. Her book gives practical and simple changes we can make every day for better sleep, mood, health, and digestion.
A good volume on Ayurveda, perhaps for people with a base understanding of the topic already. I didn't love how the book was organized, but I did find the appendices/index to be helpful. The e-book also had helpful hyperlinks to other definitions and parts of the book that were helpful, as well. I learned some new things here that I will definitely try!
lovely book. What I most enjoyed was the break down of the different elements of an ayurvedic lifestyle and ways to incorporate self care routines and reflections into your day.
It includes great prompt on how to be more introspective about your body and emotions, not prescriptive advice!
I plan on keeping this book close as a reference guide when I’m not feeling my best, or when I’m mentally foggy. It has recipes for teas and massage oils, and it’s a nice small sized book that can go where you go.
Clear and concise explanations of some of the ayurvedic ways to eat, self care, and connect with the elements. I have known Ayurveda before reading this book, but even now, I think it is an amazing guide to reel me back into track when life gets busy. For a Western author, I think Dr. Kucera did an amazing job. I also love the fact that her cat is mentioned, which is bonus points from me.
This book contains some plain and simple, easy to understand and easy to use holistic approaches to just about everything! It’s up to you to research and decide if this is best for your family or not…but with all the side effects in drugs, why wouldn’t you want to try something natural first?
