Love is like that. It multiplies and often heals the one who gives.

Another wonderful novelette by Eileen Mueller and I loved it even more than Bronze Dragon.

Note that this novelette is available for free on the author's site: www.eileenmuellerauthor.com

This is the story of Marlies, a young healer's apprentice and a tree singer, who reminded me of Menolly from Dragonsinger - Because of her fierce spirit!

Marlies' family has come upon hard times after her father's business was burned to the ground and now they're struggling to make a living. The father by roaming across the land trying to get his business back up, while Marlies and her mother do other people's laundry to put food on the table. And to make things worse, Marlies has to make sure to stay clear off the Nightshaders, a group of troublemakers led by Bruno; a vicious bully and the son of the wealthiest man in town. They accuse Marlies of being a witch and want retribution for her failure at saving someone they new.

One day, things go too far. The gang corners Marlies and Bruno pulls a knife on her, drawing blood. And it is that day that Marlies is given a chance. To learn how to defend herself, as well as other littlings that fall prey to Bruno, or to keep hiding and running, to obey her healer's oath that compels her to "not hurt others." And she'll have to make a choice, especially as her healer's abilities will set her in the path of a stunning silver dragon.

An enchanting little tale full of feeling, this novelette will have you at the edge of your seat and set you on an emotional roller coaster.
For such a short story, it has all the making of a fabulous read. It made me want to cry because I could practically feel the grief of both a dragon and girl. It made me want to trash a certain bully. And it made me smile at a littling's joy, surrounded by the love of both humans and dragons alike.
Now I am barely waiting to dive into the rest of the series. Because if the prequel was so great, the novels are bound to be even better!

Aren't these covers gorgeous!!!

If you love Pern and Eragon, this would be a perfect fit for you! I highly recommend it!
So go ahead and give it a try! Who knows, you might end up loving it just as much as I did!
Happy reading! :)

I loved reading this prequel novelette to the Riders of Fire series as in this book we get the background to one of the important characters in the series, that of Marlies. We see that Marlies had always been a healer and even when young and still an apprentice had stood up to bullies even when she felt quite powerless and got beaten up, as long as she was defending young ones. I loved that we got to read of her imprinting with her beloved dragon Liesar who also features so strongly in the series. We also are introduced to Mage Giddi, Giant John and Amato and his dragon Matatoi, and learn of the attacks posed by the evil tharuks who wreck havoc on so many lives and villages but who Marlies and Liesar fight against in this book and later on in the Riders of Fire. This is a very enjoyable read which fills in much needed background information about a beloved character and her silver dragon! My only complaint being that the story is too short and that I wish I had read this before reading the series which I absolutely loved and highly recommend for all readers who love dragons and their riders!

Review for “Silver Dragon” by Eileen Mueller:

It’s a prequel novelette of the “Riders of Fire” series written by Eileen Mueller. It focuses on Marlies, a shy girl that is good at healing, but she wasn’t good enough to save her friend Aleena. Now the Nightshader gang is after her. Its members consist of strong, fast and mean fighters and they know where to find her. But when Giddi, the Dragon Mage calls Marlies deep into the Great Spanglewood Forest, she finds something that changes her life forever.
The author attracts the readers with her writing style that can be easily understood. Her world is similar to the ones created by J. R. R. Tolkien, Emily Martha Sorensen, Richard H. Stephens, Allison D. Reid and Katie Jenkins.
We’re all like the main character sometimes because there will be always people that will do anything to belittle us, mock us and bully us out of envy, hatred and fear. But life has something in store for each of us when we least expect it.
One of the major themes discussed in the novelette is coping with loss. Marlies struggles to accept that some problems are too hard to tackle even for a skilled healer. It is our choice to both learn from our mistakes and use them as ways to strengthen us, or let them torture our soul until we give up our hopes and dreams.
Through her book, Eileen Mueller teaches us how to move on in life after a tragedy, to find our destiny, to stand up for ourselves, to regain our confidence, to give love and probably one of the most important lessons of all is that love is a miracle cure for grief. The author also shows us the effects of bullying on people.
The charred areas on Nightshade Alley and the tharuks represent bad omens and hell while Dragon’s Hold represents heaven. The riders and the dragons are similar to the archangels and Giddi is similar to Merlin from the Arthurian Legends, Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings series, Dumbledore from the Harry Potter series and Alhena Sirrus from the Soul Forge Saga series since he is a guide and mentor to the main character.
There are many things with a symbolic meaning namely, the tree – healing, protection, exploring, physical and spiritual nourishment; the forest – mystery, nature’s temple and sometimes an omen; the mountains – obstacles, nature’s way to protect human settlements, majestic creatures’ home; the goat – intelligence, hardiness, usefulness, being able to survive on your own and adapt well even to harsh environments; the horse – personal power, the things you master in your life, your natural gifts and letting go of things you no longer need; blue – protection, responsibility, tranquility, loyalty and trust; green – harmony, safety, growth, hope, luck, revitalization, envy, balance and encouragement; orange – emotion, youth, happiness, strength, risk taker (in Aralynne’s case); silver – the mirror of the soul, unconditional love, hope, tenderness, kindness, sensitivity and psychic abilities; It has the ability to extract the negative energy from the body and replace it with positive energy just like Liesar chases away Marlies’ sadness and replaces it with happiness, determination and optimism; fire – creation, destruction and transformation.
Family, friendship, magic, danger, monsters, adventure, excitement, love, laughter, joy, sadness and dragons await us through every page of the book.
Along with C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, Richard H. Stephens, Allison D. Reid, Katie Jenkins, Emily Martha Sorensen, Mrs. Mueller revolutionized literature through the world that she created.
I recommend this book to readers 16+ because there are some scenes which are too scary for younger readers.

⭐ 5/5 Stars

Silver Dragon is a rollercoaster of action, power, and resilience, packed with bullies, monsters, and the wonders of healing magic. Marlies' journey is intense and gripping, drawing readers into a world where danger lurks at every corner, and unexpected discoveries change everything. The fast-paced storytelling kept me hooked, and the blend of adventure and fantasy was captivating. However, it felt way too short—I need to know what happens next with Marlies, her newfound dragon, and her growing healing abilities. With new adventures on the horizon, I can't wait for the next installment!

A Fantastically Fun Fantasy

Quotes:📖
“So, you grieve too,” Liesar said, her clear voice husky with grief. “With a depth and vulnerability that I’ve seldom felt in a human. You have great capacity for love.”

Thoughts: 💡
I was not expecting to enjoy this book as much as I did. I was able to finish the entire story in one sitting. It’s easy to read and filled with both action and heartbreak.
Even though it’s geared towards a YA market for teenagers the story still addresses enough topics in an astute and eloquent way that makes the story engaging for all audiences.
If you love dragons, books about friendships, and rising to difficult challenges while facing hard losses then you’re sure to enjoy this book.

Writing Mechanics: ✍️
This book is beautifully written with articulate phrasing, usage of elevated vocabulary, and even a few newly minted terms just for this story. It’s edited well and easy to read, with a complete and fully flushed out plot, and keen attention to detail. The book is appropriate for all ages and will have most people consulting their dictionary at least once.

Fun Bits:
⚜️ Magical Powers
⚜️ Dragons!
⚜️ Confronts topics of Grief and Pain
⚜️ High Action Sequences

This is the first book I've read by Eileen Mueller. She just jumped to my short list of favorite authors! This story is absolutely wonderful! Marlies is an apprentice healer, a tree singer, defender of littlings and SO much more--brave, kind and caring! Her story is compelling and I can't wait to read the series--a few of which are already in my Kindle. I received this one for free but definitely would have paid for this amazing tale! As a fan of Anne McCaffery and Sarah K. Wilson, I guess you could say that dragon stories are my go-to...and I can't 'go to' these fast enough! Thank you Eileen. I highly recommend this book!

A very good dragon story with characters you will enjoy. Marlie is a healer who gets dragged into being a combatant. She starts out defending those who need her help, just as the injured and sick need her help. The characters are well portrayed, you will bond with them, not just with the dragons. It's a quick read that you just don't want to put down. The emotions between people and with dragons is well portrayed and pull you in.

‘Dragons are owned by no one’

I appreciate that the author addresses emotional pain and healthy ways to release grief. Readers can also find discussions about a healer’s responsibility toward self and others.

May we all find a trade or hobby in which we excel. ‘You make that stuff look so easy’ is one of the best compliments I’ve ever known. Our gifts are for others as well as for ourselves…

Next for me is ‘Amethyst Dragon’ (releases 29 November).

Marlies is a accused of being a witch in her town, just because she is an excellent healer that has a rare ability. Her abilities are tested with the arrival of a certain poison that she has not seen before from a new threat in their world.
This novella has great character development, does not feel rushed, and full of great detail, along with a crush. The balance of this novella with story, characters, & set up with the rest of the series is just right. A great Fantasy.

I really enjoy this author. This is the second novelette I've read of hers and I can't wait to read the first full length novel in the series. I received Silver Dragon as an ARC copy but I've truly loved reading about Dragon Realm and I hope my review reflects that. The story has all the classic fantasy inclusions, but somehow makes dragons, mages, monsters, coming of age, love, and family exciting and new again. The main character of Silver Dragon, Marlies, is my favorite character in the two novellas I've read so far. We always dream of being a hero, but we never realize the stress of the responsibilities that come with heroism and Author Mueller really brought that home. If you love fantasy, this series is for you!

This short story introduces us to Marlies and her childhood. I loved seeing the contrast with Ezaara's childhood, much more lighthearted, yet with her own losses. As a gifted healer-in-training, Marlies is called upon to cure sicknesses beyond her ability which gives her a greater motivation to find cures for poisons and illnesses that were previously unknown. Unlike Ezaara, she also grew up with a love and admiration for dragons, and thus the dragon bond, while still overwhelming, is less surprising. Eileen Mueller has created a beautiful world in Dragon's Realm. It is also immediately compelling and delightful. I can't recommend her books enough!

I was given a free copy of this novella from the author and have reviewed it voluntarily.

Another entertaining and yet emotional little prequel from Eileen Mueller, further convincing me that I want to read one of the full length novels. There seemed to be more depth here than Bronze Dragon, perhaps because an extra 10% of this is novella rather than tasters at the end. I enjoyed the interactions between characters, and the character progression throughout the tale and the depictions of the dragons. It was also good to get to spend a little time with dragon and rider and a taste of the Dragon's Hold. All in all, a good little read and an interesting taste of what is to come.

I had difficulty with the start of the story. Bullies and gangs running things: corrupt politicians their parents. But the story soon turned around to be about a young, darling, Marlies: a healer in training. It's a war-torn world with dragons and magic. What's not to enjoy.

Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Haunting. Informative. Inspirational. Tear-jerker. Tragic. Wonderful characters.

I received a copy of this book as a gift.  This is my honest review.
