Poetry is a unique voice that can deliver words to people in ways a normal conversation cannot. The words resonate and make you think. The words can be like sutures, healing from the inside out. Someone finally gets you and you are not alone. The words make sense and you realise that maybe I am not going crazy after all. You conclude-it's not just me; I am not alone in my darkness. ABYSS takes the reader on a journey – a journey we are all forced to take at some point in our lives. When we are suffering inwardly, we often keep our inner suffering concealed from those closest to us. We put on a brave face and smile when all we want to do is cry and scream aloud. Winning the fight is not easy. The fight can feel like an endless battle and consume you from the inside out. The dark shadows buried deep in the far corners of our minds when we are at our most vulnerable, feed on our pain – loss, grief, rejection, depression, anxiety and much more. No one is immune. Through the art of poetry, I have touched on these raw emotions using some of my own experiences. I have delved deep into the darkness that I have journeyed in my lifetime to convey the emotional struggles that I know plague many. Emotional struggles are not a human defect – it’s naturally human.

‘Abyss’ by D. G. Torrens is a collection of poetry and prose described as ‘thought-provoking’ in its subtitle. My own belief about reading poetry is that the old adage of ‘the writer starts the tale, but it’s the reader that finishes it’ is never truer. Whatever lengths the writer will go to in order to imbue one interpretation or another into their carefully chosen words, will never be the ultimate interpretation of the work because its impact, emotionally, spiritually, driven by each reader’s own experiences, will provide the filter by which the author’s words will be attributed their final meaning for that particular reader.
In my case with this collection, I chose to read each piece individually, letting hours, even days in one instance, elapse while my subconscious fed on the notions presented and shaped their growth in my psyche. Long-forgotten memories surfaced, some welcome, others less so, as the pieces ‘matured’. One of the earlier works, ‘Unseen Chains – Prisoner’, was the most powerful piece in the collection, for me, personally. Definitely a ‘thought-provoking’ anthology. Highly recommended.
Abyss is a captivating collection of thought provoking poetry and prose by Bestselling author, DG Torrens.
Deep, dark and incredibly emotional, the author takes us on her personal journey of grief, sorrow, rejection and loss. Yet everyone has experienced these challenges one way or another, which makes her thoughts and words relatable to just about anyone; particularly those of us who’ve lived through a lifetime of struggles and are experiencing continuous loss.
“I stumble Then I remember, someone once said ‘A star needs darkness to shine’ I rise to my feet My heart a little lighter now – I am the star that needs the darkness to shine My glow intensifies And I am strong again.”
The author’s skill is incomparable, both haunting and beautiful.. Heartwrenching at times but hopeful at others, her words aren’t only powerful but sometimes lyrical, like the words of a song that will most definitely seep into your heart.
I highly recommend this powerful collection to poetry lovers everywhere.
Abyss: Thought Provoking Poetry & Prose, by D. G. Torrens.
An interesting collection of poetry and as the title suggests. Poems to reflect upon and connect with.
I liked the few black and white photos randomly placed throughout the book. Also the smaller black sketches that headed each poem were nicely done. They each managed to set the mood for the accompanying poem.
Poems to shock, while others take you on a meander through life’s journey— be it those joyous occasions or facing challenges—or plunging into the depths of sadness with all its fears and loneliness. Not forgetting, love and affection, the most desired of emotions the human spirit can attain.
I don’t read enough poetry. This fact was brought home to me when a friend recommended D.G. Torrens’ Abyss, and I was won over. Her thoughts are deep and dark, but extraordinary in how they connect with our whole lives’ journey. Every experience becomes relived through the author’s beautiful words, whether joyous or sad or facing every challenge including fear and loneliness. Long-forgotten memories resurface in some of the most powerful pieces that will surely stay in your mind, sometimes with startling immediacy as if they happened yesterday. This is the author’s skill which is practically magic. I also enjoyed the cover and very touching black-and-white drawings. Broken heart and Your Gift were two of my favorite pieces. This book is special. If you love poetry you will enjoy it.
D.G. Torrens guides you through intense emotions with an incredibly authentic voice. I wasn’t sure which time or place I was taken, being grounded only by her words. I might compare her to Poe with her ability to dive deep into the darkness of thoughts. Don’t miss this poetry collection.
This is the second book of poems that I’ve read from the author, and once again, I’m not disappointed. Shape-shifter and Broken heart were two of my favourites. If you like poems, then consider diving into this book.
