Who were the Teutonic Knights? The Teutonic Knights were established to help the sick and injured in the Holy Land in a similar vein as the Knights Hospitaller. Once they were battle-tested in war, however, they were commissioned to be full-fledged fearsome warriors, fighting for the cause of Christendom. Their fate would rise and fall with the political and ideological situations that were prevalent in the European continent. The rise of both Poland and Lithuania would come to threaten the Teutonic Order, and the climactic Battle of Tannenberg in 1410 would have repercussions that would reverberate for centuries to come. This book follows the meteoric rise, the climactic fall, and the many years of rebirth undergone by the Teutonic Knights. Great Overview

Although obviously owing a debt to academic historian William Urban, this great little book pulls together the mixture of motivations and motivating forces in the centuries old Teutonic Knights.

From Transylvania to Livonia and Prussia the order was buffeted by pagans, eastern orthodoxy, and not least catholic Poland and even Napoleon Bonaparte and Hitler, so far it has survived them all.

I received this book as a member of the Advance Review Team.

This book opened my eyes to how the Teutonic Knights were created and their long history in Europe. It made it easy to delve into the history, and would be a great book for anyone interested in European history.

I would recommend the book as it is a quick read, but keeps you interested the entire time. Well worth your time.

Wow!

I certainly learned a lot more about the Teutonic Kmights than I expected. “Although the Teutonic Knights are no longer seen charging onto battlefields, their influence can be felt in charitable work all around the globe.”

I had a hard time following this history, maybe because I wasn’t as interested in the subject as I thought I would be. The summary at the end helped a lot.

The Captivating History series offers brief overviews of a wide variety of topics. This volume covers the history of the Teutonic knights from their inception as a medical order to their increasing role as a military order in the Levant, the Balkans, and the Baltic. The Teutonic Order varied greatly throughout its lifetime in both location and purpose, which is colloquially described in this novel. Given the short length of this volume and the more relaxed manner in which it approaches its intended audience, it serves as a good introductory text to the topic.
