A collection of short stories and prose. These stories are based off dreams and meditations that the author has had over the course of time. What do our dreams want us to know? What are they telling us when we drift off to that plane? These stories are woven together to speak of fantasy, jewels, and circumstances that suggest the mysterious.
"Foolish? Never. I'm just glad that you didn't come here alone, and I'm glad that you were brave enough to at least try to go for something that you cared about, regardless of its outcome."
Vastly different from Aborizk's poetry books in it's style and structure, but still maintains the vivid imagery and wondrous heart that makes their work special. This book of anthology stories weaves between dreams and captures the feeling of falling in and out of consciousness and mystery perfectly. There's a story featuring an alien, another featuring a mermaid, and a few that genuinely scared me with its bloody imagery (plus many more stories!). When you go to sleep, you never really know if you'll have a nightmare or a sweet folktale, and its the same feeling when turning into a new page in this book. Regardless, there's always a deep meaning in each of the story's subconscious and at their heart are tales about finding understanding in nature and in the people around us, and how life is about embracing that very mystery. A great and quick read!
Poetic, creative, and elegant writing. Allen sends us on a spiral of a journey throughout multiple short stories. This was different from Allen's other works, but very much enjoyable (possibly my favorite of hers so far). There were elemental suspense vibes throughout the stories.
