Solstice Huntress #1

Bounty Collected

Rate this book
I’m a bounty hunter with a secret advantage...

I’m the bounty hunter you call when you want the job done. But what people don’t know is that I’m a rare half-fae with the sort of powers the Unseelie will kill for.

That’s why I let everyone think I’m human and I always work alone. Until now. Corbin Frost has been assigned to my latest case, and working with the Unseelie Enforcer—especially one who is a hybrid fae demon—isn’t going to be easy.

He’s here because there are Fae markings on the dead body. The woman I’m tracking swears she’s innocent of her husband’s murder. She also claims to be human, but the evidence suggests otherwise.

Basically, Corbin is my worst nightmare, and I can’t risk him finding out my true identity. It’s such a shame he’s so damn tempting...

It's yet another urban fantasy with a headstrong heroine who:
- is either a bounty hunter or PI
- lives in squalor
- dead or missing family
- has some secret ability
- attracts the attention of a stronk hot guy

but I still had plenty of fun reading it tho

This book was a slooowww starter. It had probably one of THE most boring first chapters I've ever read. It was the MC, Tempie, trying to draw a bath for herself. Like, what? Who would start a fast-paced, crime-solving, steamy urban fantasy book with that? But! It finally picks up a third of the way through and is pretty enjoyable after that.

The plot gets pretty convenient at times, just dumping information in Tempie and Corbin's laps. Still, it was a fun supernatural mystery. There was some pleasant steam between the MCs but it is a slow burn. Some making out but no intercourse.

I plan to stick with the series for now. I have a feeling it will get better as time goes on.

Biggest problem: Needs editing. Lots of typos, lots of spots that could be cleaned up writing -wise. Author has a habit of using the same phrase or description verbatim within 2 consecutive paragraphs, which can be distracting in its redundancy.

I like the world presented. The story doesn't do a lot of world building but gives just enough to make me WANT to see more world building while bordering pretty damn close to not caring.

I like the idea of the 2 MCs but I didn't feel like the "danger" to her secret genealogy was very real because she falls very far into the too-stupid-to-live female character trope. She spends the entire book fretting over being discovered while doing just about anything she can possibly do to draw attention to it. If the author wants to present real anxiety in her she fails MISERABLY and if she wants to present her character as reckless she also fails (read Kim Harrison's Hollow series for better representation on that type) by making her just come off as a moron (on this one subject).

I know it sounds like I hated this book but I didn't. It's swimming in potential. I'm betting there won't be a ton of improvement in the next few books but if the author could get a good editor to force her to make some better decisions for her writing and character development I think she could write some good stuff.

fun!!

This was a great time in a new adventure with a different kind of heroine. Yes, she’s a bounty hunter and yes, she has a secret, but it’s not the typical secret you see in these kinds of UF’s - at least it’s not one I’ve seen previously. So that was fun, and the chemistry between Tempie and Corbin is spot on.

Romantic elements, but this is a slow burn with a potential future.

I’m torn on this novel. It had things that I found interesting and intriguing, and then there were the grammar and plot lines that didn’t quite work. There were things that I liked about both our hero and heroine and then there were things that I didn’t quite care for. The mystery bounty hunter hunt was intriguing. Not everything is fully answered by the end of the book with a few plots still left open. There might be a romantic element but it’s not happening yet. I think what really frustrated me was all the grammar errors and I am not great with English but it was quite noticeable. The novel could use some help from an editor.

Maybe this book just wasn't for me since other people seem to really like it. I got sucked in by the cool cover and the intriguing premise but for me the execution fell really flat. As others pointed out, it could use a good editor going over it again as there are continuity issues as well as missing words.

You’re telling me this woman (Tempie) literally has magic jewelry that keeps her power under control/hidden and helps her channel it and she doesn’t wear it all the time? She only breaks it out now because she’ll be working with a fae. These powers of hers – that haven’t even been explained at this time other than saying they’ll supposedly get her killed – are supposed to be so powerful they’re “galloping” through her veins yet she only feels the need to wear her safety net when absolutely necessary? In a city that is populated by more supernaturals than humans. As a bounty hunter of supernaturals. As a half-fae who must hide herself at all costs. Where is the logic? Then she also randomly drinks a tea that dulls her powers almost to nothing (while giving some unpleasant side effects) while pretending to be Corbin's pet. Where did she get this and why does she just have it on hand? This was never mentioned before and was only mentioned later as a "I didn't drink it this time because we're going into the danger zone again" and she wanted to be prepared this time.

The book started off achingly slow – there was a lot of added descriptions that I didn’t feel were necessary. I know it’s the first book in a new series and there is set-up involved, but it had me breezing over sections. For example, there is an entire paragraph dedicated to her diner meal. She gets a highly confidential case, then reviews the file and photos at a diner while eating a burger that
“was so good I thought I might spontaneously gain the ability to understand the runes”. Right. Said burger is then mentioned another four times. There’s also a lot of added descriptors about side characters and their backgrounds we will probably never see again. All these paragraphs could have been put to better use building the world or Tempie’s powers. Instead all I’ve got is she can get a feel for what someone is and how powerful they are (apparently a rare ability? Most stories it is a common skill to at least register fellow supernaturals even if you can’t tell anything else), people just “like” her even when she acts like a brat, and she can give or take life.

Tempie has supposedly spent YEARS hiding from all supernaturals (while at the same time capturing supernaturals skipping on bail?) and now all of a sudden with Corbin she makes mistakes left and right. He sees her use magic multiple times because "she forgot" even though she spends every other thought complaining about him. This apparently also let OTHERS see her (again, NO ONE saw her use her powers to this point???) and she lets herself get bit by a demon and lets him escape.

I'm also confused on Tempie's profession. She tells Laura she is going to get the situation under control – girl, you’re a bounty hunter for a bail bond company not an investigator. Your only job is to find the missing wife and you have no actual power to do anything else about the situation unless you plan to kill the instigator and cover it up.

Tempie acts like a child half the time. When Corbin is going to take her to dinner, instead of explaining the sprites at the restaurant he chose like to gossip, she threatens to jump out of the car unless he goes to Manny's diner. She keeps pouting about needing to be the lead on the case whenever Corbin does something to help and while she wants any information he gets she isn't willing to share her own because "I don't do partners". Then when he gets frustrated she laughs about HIM acting like a teenager.

They drove separate to the Smucker's house after Corbin looked like he was going to bite Tempie the night before. Then afterwards they both climb into Corbin's car and he drives her home like they came together? She then continues to get in the car with him even though he attempts to bite her multiple times.

The thing with Jace (whoever he is) showing up trying to get the bounty file from her felt really random. Unless he shows up later somehow linked I don't understand the purpose of the scene.

Fun characters, but...

Authors, PLEASE find good proofreaders and editors!

This was a decent story with fun characters, but the errors - missing words, wrong words, extra words - was distracting and made reading this book tedious.

I won't be reading any more from this author.

I have this weird habit where I see a book with less than 200 pages and I instantly think it’s going to be a flop. So yeah opening this book I wasn’t expecting anything spectacular. What’s sad is that I was right. It’s not a good book. But then again neither is it you-have-to-throw-it-away-bad bad.

There were these little things that just got on my nerves is all and those kept adding up until I couldn’t enjoy the book anymore. One example would be the H’s name. I like Temperance it’s cute. But then a grown woman goes around calling herself Tempie, introducing herself to strangers as Tempie, grown men calling her Tempie, I don’t know it just felt off for me. I guess the author was trying to say ‘okay this chick badass but hey look she’s got a cute name so really she’s just a softie’. I don’t think it worked for me. I just cringed whenever I saw Corbin call her by her name.

Talking about Corbin. I felt no kinship no like nothing with him. He could’ve been a secondary character and not the love interest or heck died for all I cared.

So yep. When you don’t get along with the MMC that’s when you know it’s time to put the book down. And that’s exactly what I did. Well not literally. I started skipping right around the 60% mark. I did end up finishing the book but meh. Don’t think I’ll be reading book two. Maybe it’s just a me thing cause apparently per reviews and ratings most readers seemed to have enjoyed the book.

I finished this and hate myself a little because.
This stank of recycled plot, recycled characters and inane dialogue.
The "what are you" question got so old, it made me even hate True Blood, which popularized that cliche.

Looking for a new series, new author, and this came up under my Paranormal reading shelf recommendations. Since it was technically free with Kindle Unlimited, I decided to give it a whirl. First impressions: Tempie is a foul tempered bounty hunter, who doesn't work well with others. It comes across as childish and pouty to me. I think the premise of this story is ok, but a bit cookie cutter on the whole. Corbin isn't very impressive so far, with completely unbelievable chemistry. I'm also not impressed with the cheesy dialogue. So I think I have fizzled out with this one at about 25%.

I enjoyed the author's writing and the fact that she chose to write the story of Temperance in the first person. I find that the use of "I" allows you to immerse yourself more quickly in the story and to be completely immersed in it because you become the narrator. There is not the distance of "he/she" and it is appreciable.

I also liked the bond that develops between our two characters. We are on a slow-burn, their relationship develops smoothly and they gradually get to know each other. I found them both touching, each one protects himself and delivers himself in his own way. I find that they go well together, I find them complementary but also very similar in some ways. They share the particularity of being hybrids. Tempie is afraid that her true nature will be revealed because it could become dangerous for her. But as the story progresses we learn that Corbin is also different and that he too has problems integrating because no one accepts him because of his dangerous nature.

I enjoyed the investigation. It is well constructed and well conducted. Tempie is a very competent bounty hunter. She takes the time to think and unravel the clues to find her "prey". The investigation takes its time, we discover a little more throughout the story. It also reserves us some twists and turns that give rhythm and allow us to stay in suspense for a long time.

But to nuance all that I have to be honest. I enjoyed my reading but I didn't come out of it saying: this is great! Part of this feeling is not at all related to the story, it comes rather from the fact that I have nowadays read a lot of urban fantasy and that by certain aspect I had here the impression to read again something already seen. We have a strong heroine, with an important power it seems but who must remain hidden because to reveal herself can be fatal. She is going to find herself on an investigation in duo with a handsome man, charismatic and powerful but who could potentially turn out to be an enemy if he learns of her existence. Then, as the investigation progresses, their feelings will develop and they will fall under each other's spell. This is a very common dynamic in urban fantasy and I don't know why this time it didn't totally work.

I think that part of my frustration comes from the fact that at the end of my reading I felt like I was still in the dark about the world building, I feel like I didn't learn much as I wanted and I'm a little frustrated. Although, I really liked the fact that it was written in the first person, because it allowed me to immerse myself in the story very quickly, I regretted that Temperance did not reveal who she is and what she is capable of. I feel like I don't know much about her and the exact extent of her powers. But I'm keeping in mind that this is the first volume and there is plenty of time to develop these elements in future volumes.

I recommend this read to lovers of urban fantasy because despite everything it is a pleasant read that makes you spend a good time.

Book #1 of 3

🆗 Bounty hunter
🆗⬇️ Humans, Fae, demons,...
⬇️ Powers: few information
🆗⬇️ Hidden as human
🆗⬇️ Forced to work with the enemy
⬇️❌ World building: not the most clear introduction

Tempie is one of the top bounty hunters in the area. Especially when the job is a supernatural.

After all, as a rare half-fae in hiding between humans she does have a certain advantage.

She works alone.

Until she doesn't.

For this last case, the Unseelie Court has shown an interest and sent one of their enforcers to help her.

Tempie has maintained her human front because her kind has been hunted to near extinction for their powers by all kinds of supernaturals, but in particular the unseelies.

With Corbin Frost as her partner, doing her job gets a little harder. And so does her control over her powers.

She has a bounty to earn.

She just has to keep her true identity hidden for a little while.

***

Notes:

❌ World building

Lack of proper introduction to this world and the beings in it.

What kind of powers do they have? And how do they work?

Do they live in different worlds, dimensions?

What are the rules for their coexistence?

⬇️ Bounty hunter

The job is retrieving people that don't show up to court when on bail.

Not the most exciting.

So the author added a brutal murder scene, an elusive escapee and weird rituals for the MCs to investigate in order to find the runaway.

⬇️ Enemies to lovers

Kinda, maybe...

More like she needs to keep a low profile and hidden from his kind so she doesn't want to work with him and spend a lot of time together.

But they are obviously attracted to each other.

On the plus side they don't jump straight to being together, being in love nor having sex.

They barely even admit they tolerate each other.

🔸 Overall: nice, short read

***

As always my complete respect to the author and their work.
No hate nor hurt intended with this review.

On a Case With the UnSeelie . . .

Temperance (“Tempie”) is a strong bounty hunter who has been keeping a huge secret that she is a rare half-Fae. She also has powers the UnSeelie covet and would kill her for if they didn’t think she was human. This is why she always works alone, so that no one will find out her secret.

But this time, when the dead body of victim Greyson Wheels has Fae markings on it, runes carved into his body, Corbin Frost is assigned by the UnSeelie Court as her partner. He is a powerful UnSeelie Enforcer and a hybrid Fae demon, which could prove dangerous to her secret identity. The victim’s wife, Sandra Wheels, is claiming she didn’t kill her husband, and also claiming to be human. And yet evidence would indicate that’s not true, according to Todd. She was bailed out for $5 million, so they need to recapture this woman.

As things got more complex, it came down to one fact. If Tempie wanted her skip, and Corbin wanted to figure out what these people were doing to get into Faerie, the two of them were going to have to work together. And Corbin could still be a big problem for Tempie. Will he find out what she really is? Will he put her in danger? What can she do to keep him unaware of her secret? And would they both get what they wanted if they were able to close this case? And who would she work for now that she couldn’t trust Todd anymore?

This was an excellent story line with feisty, fun characters. Swirl in a bit of mystery and suspense, and it turns into a real page-turner. Grab your copy and let yourself be thoroughly entertained!

Needs editing, but a fun bounty hunter romp

Some people can read a book that needs more editing and still enjoy it, but some cannot. If you are in the latter group, pass this up. Lots of work needed to ensure the correct words were selected and that quotation marks were in the right places. If you are in the former group, it was a fun enough story and worth a read.

Clearly the first book in a series, it certainly left some question marks for me that I suspect will be answered in future books. For what did get answered, there was a pleasant mix of guessing it right and wrong (I like surprises). I also enjoyed the way the search for Tempies "skip" unfolded. It helped to create world-building without a lot of droning on like most first books do. Not sure how Tempie has managed to hide her true self this whole while, and I hope she can keep it up. Corbin has his own secrets and I must admit they fully caught me off guard. There was a decent pacing to the story so I never got bored. Though, I also never felt that rush of what needing to know more that I get with an insanely good book.

All in all, it's a decent book 1 with lots of potential for the series as a whole.

Made me smile

3.5. but rounded up cause it made me smile

Tempie is so WEIRD but I love it. Funny, dorky with her lame salutes that everyone eye-rolls. I like the way the author wrote her out when she monologued. Like the way she sussed stuff out when she was working a crime scene.

These murder cases are a fun genre of mine so it wasn’t hard to get into the story of the “not-really-freelance” bounty hunter bringing people in and dealing with the supernatural. I think her own mystery behind being fae was cool too and I almost wish I didn’t read the synopsis so that I didn’t know off the bat. I like things opening up as they come.

Corbin was hot. In that mysterious-partner way. I felt he was attempted to be written as playful whenever he looked sleezily at her or was being a dork, but I enjoyed when he looked dangerous. Something missed for me that gave me the eventual impression he was all over the place but he wasn’t so bad.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Good Story

Here's how I do my star ratings:

1 Star : Awful Abort Mission to Read
2 Stars : Not horrible but wouldn't recommend
3 Stars : Good, might recommend but not worth a re-read
4 Stars : Great. Would definitely read again.
5 Stars : Will read again and buy paperback copy and recommend and join fan groups.

So, storyline was actually pretty good. The FMC being something other than what every other story is was also a good bonus.
MMC not being a total jerk all the time was refreshing even though I like the alpha types also.
Doesn't end in a cliffhanger but more of if you wanted to read about another case there's going to be another book but doesn't leave you wondering what is going to happen.
I will probably continue the series just to see what kind of stuff they get into but it won't be my next read just something I might pick up later.

Tepid Tempie

Really, there were so many glaringly obvious grammatical errors and spelling errors. There were numerous forgotten words. And so much of how things occurred didn’t make sense. But the biggest error was in the beginning when Tempie decided to ride her motorcycle to question some people, meeting her partner there, instead of sharing his car. They end up leaving together in his car and never even mention going back to that place for her bike. The next morning, she just gets on her bike and goes. An editor or proofreader absolutely would have caught that!

That’s just the largest error, but there were so many other inconsistencies and honestly, the whole thing was just kind of boring. No mystery or intrigue. Tempie reads like a pre-teen with a bit of a chip on her shoulder and I’m just over it.

Good

Temperance is a bounty hunter with a secret. Although everyone thinks she is human, she isn’t. When she is paired with an UnSeelie Fae to investigate a case, danger arrives on more than one front; for it was the UnSeelie who killed her mother, and they would happily kill her too if they discovered what she is.
Searching for miscreants, dodging UnSeelie and demons alike, Tempie has got her work cut out for her!

This was an enjoyable, fast paced Urban Fantasy, with some interesting characters and an intriguing magical world.
Since it’s part of a series, it leaves some stories with open endings and finishes on a book hook. Don’t worry though, it’s enjoyable enough that you will want to read more!

Recommended for urban fantasy fans.

This is a tricky one, to be honest. There’s a lot of potential: interesting world, solid story, likable characters, especially the heroine. But - I felt like this should have a little more time in the editing rounds. Not just because there were quite some mistakes, often missing words, that made me stumble, also I felt like the story needed some polishing, the characters and worlds more deepening and the plot some restructuring to meld it more smoothly.
So in the sum, while I got into the story enough to mostly enjoy it and being curious how it ended, I’m not as curious to read how this series ends. Shame. But there are many books still waiting on the unread shelve, some of them definitely better and hooking me for years. Good luck to this one. Because as I said: I do see potential here.

Meh. It had potential but the lore was missing. The whole thing with Todd needed a better explanation but it was just brushed off in a hurry. Things with Corbin went the way one would expect so no surprises there. She was also super powerful and could hold her own. The time that she was in the den and the fae thought that she was just human so they treated her like she just a thing and she went along with it coz she is a professional and didn’t let her pride get in the way was refreshing to read.

But the lore was missing. I don’t read much of fae fantasy so I may be missing something but where is the seelie court? Why are the seelie hiding? Is this gonna be explained in the next book because there was not even a hint about the seelie court in this one?

A-Z

Normally, I am quite picky and something like the main character being called “Tempie” without going for the more obvious and organic spelling, “Tempe”, would be enough to rankle and the stereotypical romance characteristics of red hair and green eyes would zip the starts right off my review.

However, the mystery here was good. Temp was slightly edgy without being a deranged lunatic and more than anything else, she was good at her job. She tried hard. She had ideas. She worked the clues and put in the legwork on tracking down both the bail skip and, in doing so, solve the crime. It was a fun, fast read. I even liked the cat and the neighbor.

Ok

Ok read. Great storyline, great characters. I really loved the little heat snippets here and there, can't wait to see these two get closer! Loved the complete action packed chaos, so much was going on, and we still a have a lot of background mystery I'm hoping we learn more about in the next book. My only issue was the constant drag of tempies power being hidden, it just seemed to go on and on. Tempie was a "throw ones self right into the fire". She is a serious fighter/brawler. And every time she would slip up and expose herself, she would freak out and constantly explain her having to hide and be safe. Just to overly repeated/repetitive for me.

The story had potential but too many details were glossed over. The story seemed rushed in terms of the actual action and investigations. I wished we learned more about the world and the magic systems because I was confused about the existence of seelies vs unseelies and solstice nymphs are never explained. Are they just half seelie humans? Also, I did not really feel much chemistry between Corbin and Tempie. The romance seemed a little out of place and I don't understnad why Tempie fell for him so quickly. I understand that Corbin thinks she smells good, but like why would Tempie disregard all need for secrecy and safety for someone that just comes out of nowhere.

This was a fast paced read with an interesting cast of characters. My main problem with this book is the main character is in hiding but has a job that requires her to use her gifts that will get her killed if sniffed out. Like she couldn’t of been a forest ranger if she loved nature so much and had a safer life? I get the story would be vastly different but why do they always do the opposite? Plus she totally forgot about the guy that took a bite out of her. Like how is that possible. Your life depends on him being dead.
Other than that the story was fun and the romance tension was great. The mystery was interesting to unravel. I will read the next one.

Okay listen.......... is this a novel idea for a story? No. Did I love it nonetheless? Absolutely.

It's your average cool mercenary girl with a secret meets broody hot guy with a secret working together on a case and figuring out each others secrets. The case is pretty interesting, though I'm a tadddd bit confused by the ending. The resolution was a bit unsatisfying because I still have some questions, BUT the end portion as a whole was really good. I like the FMC, and I like the guy (though I'm choosing to picture him differently than he was described because I'm not into blonds). The pacing is solid, and the fight scenes were well written. I'll def be reading the next one.

Loved this series- Tempie is a badass, down to earth, hard working bounty hunter and doesn't let anyone slow her down. When a particularly annoying Fae investigator called Corbin shows up, she has no choice but to work with him and do her best to hide her secrets.

Devin's writing is fantastic, great world building and good depth of characters. I was frustrated (minor spoiler alert: stop reading) that we never really get told what Tempie can do, there is no explanation of her powers which felt a bit anticlimactic. But regardless, love the ending, love the middle, a good happy read with an engaging plotline.
