Infinite Realm #3

The Centennial Tournament

Rate this book
The Tournament Approaches!

The grand tournament is drawing near. A place where every major faction in the Settled Territories sends their greatest members to compete in various fields. As people from all over the world head to the Tournament Territory, others make moves in the shadows. Everyone has their own agenda, and everyone is looking to gain advantage and power.

For Ryun and Zach, the tournament is the place where they can test themselves against the best the Infinite Realm has to offer. To find their place in this new world.

New faces and new threats arise as everyone converges to the same territory, and the entire world is watching.
But the Infinite Realm is a cruel place, and sometimes, people forget that the beings that created it have their own agenda.

WARNING: This book contains RPG mechanics and tables, cultivation, profanity, gore, mature themes, unconventional morality, and multiple complicated main characters. This story follows several main characters, both male and female, who are introduced into the story at different times. This story is a mix of LitRPG and Xianxia, and it will have Classes as well as Cultivation systems. It also takes place in two timelines (the past chapters are not the main focus, only an addition).

Bait and switch 3 books into the series

You think you are reading a LITRPG book? Nope, you are reading a LGBTQ romance novel.

First two books were fine. Author went off the rails in this book, turning every character gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or genderless. I really hate it when authors ruin a decent series 2 or 3 books into the series by changing every aspect of their book to LGBTQ fanfic.

I won't be reading any more of this series, and probably nothing else from this author.

Wow. In what might be a massive first for me with a series that was headed in a direction I wasn’t liking, almost every single issue I had with the last book was addressed with this novel and it was so much better as a result.

Too much Zach - Definitely no longer an issue.
Too many interlude chapters - Drastically reduced.
Jumping between POVs and storylines too often - We now stick with POV/storylines long enough to get invested before moving on.
Insertion of the authors politics - not nearly so obvious or jarring.

This was a better book in almost every way imaginable. It was more focused, flowed a lot better, and as a result it was much quicker to read than the last book despite being considerably longer.

There’s no other word for this one but epic, and I can’t wait to see what the next book has in store after where this one ended.

The book was a disappointment. I read the first two so a lot of it was expected. First of all there are way way too many POVs and side stories I cared nothing about. No big deal I just skip them and only read the sections about the MC who is the only character I care about. This made it quite short as you can imagine. The new disappointments were jarring. It was almost like someone else wrote this one. The interaction between the MC and his supposed friends shifted dramatically. I noticed this in quite a few other modern stories. The friends of the powerful suddenly become nearly abusive once they realize they can do so without incurring the wrath of the powerful person. Once they see the other person is too kind or understanding to respond in kind they become abusive even though they are weaker. It's weird and an abrupt change in their dynamic. Also it seemed like the author was threatened or something because suddenly everyone turned queer. It is so abrupt and awkward. It's like suddenly a person who was born and lived as a normal person flipped to being gay with no explanation. Finally the ending was a huge disappointment. The MC was there but only as a side character.
I understand there is another book with even less of the MC in it but I'm out. No more Ivan Kal for me.

Too.much

So much useless perks and un-used abilities... I'm a litrpg fan but this series made me simply hate statues screens. If a character with 400 strength is able to damage an enemy then a character with 1k+ should simply 1 one shot that enemy. How a character with 10k++ in int and Wis isn't spamming the basic of abilities over and over and killing low lvl mobs in millions.

[Post review edit at bottom]

This is the book that will really push you to determine whether you enjoy the world Kal has created or if it is not for you. In the same way that Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time epic had a narrow focus through the early books, this one too expands the plot from a story about two humans to something much more. Whereas the first two books largely covered Zack and Ryun, in this book we got double-digit first person character chapters, from ancient high rankers to members following Zack and Ryun. I wasn't sure at first how Kal was going to leverage the Centennial tournament and I'll admit to some reservations, but this was miles better than either of the first two books.

I have not researched what Kal plans to do with this series and if it will turn into a sprawling epic of 10+ books, but after reading through this one, there is enough material, characters, and world-building to do just that.

The premise of this book is mostly a continuation from where we left off after book 2. There is an inevitable collision looming at the centennial tournament, both the obvious and less so. There were several side-story chapters where we went back in time or diverted to a completely different territory that also added to the world building. While some may dislike this method of storytelling - pausing the main story to tell another one to establish the background of who is about to be introduced - I don't mind them and sometimes find them just as compelling as the main plot. But if you are one who feels that this is lazy plot building I cannot fault you. I think there are times when it is unavoidable but there are certainly ways that authors could weave these backgrounds into the story without doing what amounts to a plot data dump.

After book two spent more time developing Zack's story arch, this book focused primarily on Ryun and several other characters connected to him. I noted in my review of book 2 that I did not understand all the Zack hate and felt that some of those who enjoyed Ryun's story better did so for reasons that I did not find persuasive (see edit at the bottom of this review for my response to those people who continued to complain in this book). What I have enjoyed is how Ryun's and Zack's story arcs have essentially flipped. On Earth, Ryun went off with his love and they were loners together while Zack started a family and joined the government. In the infinite realm, it is Zack who has been up to shady things and is the loner with his love while Ryun has established a faction and is surrounded by loyal followers. The symmetry here is well done and I believe central to a focal point Kal is exploring in this book: it is a fine line between hero and monster and just a few small decisions can set you off on one path or another. We see that with how Ryun turned into the monster he was and now see how he has changed after developing bonds with good people (even if still holding onto his essential view about power). Conversely, Zack has started down an "ends justifies the means" path despite ultimately trying to do good.

While I found this book quite entertaining I do have to say that I am perplexed about the power scaling. (Edit: I agree with one reviewer who went into more detail about the power levels. I don't believe Kal is following the rules he has established within the books.) It seems like characters' abilities and power levels are dependent upon how Kal wants a battle, war, or fight to conclude. Ryun is considered an army killer yet struggles, when convenient to the plot, to defeat an army. High rankers are untouchable unless their death would make the plot move forward. I certainly am not saying that I would prefer characters to have 'god mode' on where they literally cannot lose, but some of the inconsistencies without a solid foundation leads me to believe that the story is dictating the outcomes versus what Kal has already established about the characters.

If you've made it through the first two books (and this lengthy review!) and have some misgivings about continuing, I would encourage you to take the leap into this book and then decide whether you will keep going. Out of the first three books, this is the one that I think will make/break your decision. I found it extremely entertaining but no book is for everyone. The book concludes with a clear changing of the world that will drive the immediate story forward. If you finish and have no interest in where things are going, I totally understand, but I think you would be in a better position to make that determination after this book than the previous two. This is where the REAL story begins.

[Post-review edit: I took a look at other reviews of this book on Goodreads and there are still people complaining about 'wokeness' and that this is simply an LGBTQ+ fan fic. Bless their hearts but these people are why humanity would never be part of "the chosen" in the infinite realm. There are two couples who are important characters and who are of the same general gender in this book (and one couple where one is a shape shifter so I guess the detractors view this characters as trans so it fits into their silly narratives lol). Why do people care? These couples are not even THE SAME SPECIES! Moreover, they are not even mortals anymore. Many are nothing more than bundles of energy surrounding their consciousness. It is the infinite realm for god's sake. If you hold a view that this is a bad book because of this, that is your absolute right; just as it is mine to say that I think your view is bad and you are probably a bad person if that is how you think. I won't promise you that you'll like this book or that you'll like the story or characters. If you are a bigot and can't read a sci-fi/fantasy story that has two people from different universes who are different species and who are in love, then sure, you likely won't enjoy this book. But that is your failing, not the book's, because this book is not an LGBTQ fan fic, it simply recognizes that in an infinite realm, these relationships exists. To be clear, I am not saying you are a bad person unless you read every book by a queer author and must dedicate your time to all books with queer characters. If it grosses you out then sure, don't read it. I am simply clarifying that those reviewers who penned reviews on Goodreads are lemons, and are so fragile that they consider a book with such characters bad automatically. I am shocked at the reception from some people and felt compelled, just as I did in my last review, to offer a less biased take on this point.]

Built to a crescendo and left us wanting more. The boys aren't exactly reconciled but at least they've sheathed their blades.

Much better than the 2nd book, but I might have given it 4*s if it had no Zach parts at all. The character is trash. Anrosh is a much better character, heck forget her, even Ereclaw is much more interesting POV to read.

Apart from that, the story is good, and author has done a good job with most of the characters. Almost all of them have a distinct identity, and all dialogues coming from them reinforce that identity.

There are still big problems with the LitRPG system though. The stats don't work as they should, and worse, huge aspects of cultivation and skill path seem to be independent of stats which is bizarre. Why even have stats when you're not taking everything into consideration? For example, most of the techniques in cultivation depend on wisdom for their strength. But the amount Qi pool, or its density is not connected to any stat?! That is absurd. It is the same with classer path. There is no "mana" to speak off, so what controls how many times a person can use their skills? There is some vague mention of stamina and characters get tired, but if you're going to quantify something, do it properly or don't do it at all. This half arsed system where stats exist, but they only have a vague impact only adds confusion. What makes it worse is the number of times the author just pushes these character sheets into the story as if anything actually depends on them.

Another part that has also remained underwhelming is the combat. There is no finesse or strategy to it. The author just spams skills / perks / techniques of whichever character is fighting. There is also this absolutely silly notion about keeping certain skills as "hidden cards". Combat is not a card game. Just because someone knows what you can do doesn't mean they know when you're going to do it, or how to stop it. You don't need to keep "hidden cards". And believing that you do would mean that you could fight any person only once, as afterwards they would know all your "cards" and hence win...? What foolishness.
The main character's fights are the most painful to read. Quite literally. He doesn't have ability to evade any attack (despite having quite high strength and dexterity) and just constantly gets bits of his body blown off. Meanwhile his own attacks never seem to hit, unless the author wands to end the fight, in which case even one hit is enough to finish of the opponent (Death coffin anyone? Using an "attack" that actually has no damage value tied to it at all to kill people is quite funny).

The progression of main characters is also a bit too fast to make sense. Author tells us that in the same world where people enslaved children to make killing machines of them (ref. Erdania's interludes), they also have lost the motivation to grow stronger because the world is now somewhat safe? Make you mind up, its either one or the other.
This is frankly something that happens in every cultivation story when authors cannot grasp the time frame they're going to have to deal with. We end up having 20-30 something protagonists catching up to hundreds or thousands year old "geniuses" in couple of years. Try to keep some believability of your own world ffs.

No closure

This book embodies everything I hate about series. When an author who is obviously in love with his world spends tens of thousands of words on minutia that don't matter and don't move the story forward and then run out of space in the book and I just chop it in the middle.
Now if you're even a little interested in what's going to happen you have to wait for a year while he clanks out another book. By the time the next book gets out you'll have forgotten everything that happened in this and won't be able to remember even half the characters or why you cared about them. Very frustrating, save yourself. Don't buy this book.

Too many pages of screens

I'm looking at the page count for these books and going cool! Then there are so many pages of character stat dumps that it is insane. Oh, look, a character, even a side character, gets a choice of three powers, we don't get told what they pick until they use it next and then we have to see THE ENTIRE FETHING CHARACTER SHEET in the middle of another scene. Including the useless titles they got as n00bs hundreds of levels before, FOR EVERY FETHING CHARACTER.

I almost gave this book 3 stars, and depending on the various hanging plotlines go, the next might end up with 2.

Excellent continuation of this story

I read this book with anticipation based upon the previous books in this series, and I am glad to say that the story continued in excellent fashion.

I did read the other reviews and saw one that commented on one of the characters entering a same gender relationship after having a child. This type of thing happens in real life fairly regularly so to bash a story that the reviewer themselves stated was very well done because of perceived political views is a flawed outlook. If the reviewer had read the author’s other books, they would realise that gender and even species are not fixed into a stereotypical male/female roles, and this is not just a sudden politically inspired insertion by the author.

I was disappointed in where the author took the story in this book. The tournament had been mentioned in the previous books, so I had built up some excitement for it. But the author only showed bits and pieces of it and one of the main characters didn't actually care about winning so didn't go all out. It turned out to be a side element.

But what was worse for me was the relationship changes for the characters. The author ended up creating a mini-harem for the main character and celebrating the deviant behavior of the second main character. Spent a lot of time on it and while there weren't explicit bedroom scenes, it still dragged down the story for me. I don't want to spend time with them anymore. Done with this series.

A great addition to an exciting series, especially if you love tournament arcs. My two complaints with the previous book were 1) slightly too many full character sheet breakdowns, and 2) heavy handed/ preachy identity politics.
I'm happy to say this volume felt like it fixed both those issues. There was actually more diversity in this volume than in volume 2, but it just felt better integrated into the story, and most of the characters we got introductory screen reads for in the last book are now re-appearing, so don't need the full breakdown.
Both of these improvements meant I was able to focus more on the story and all the exciting things happening (and boy howdy was there a lot of it!)

Also, the last sentence... absolutely terrifying, I need the next book *now*.

I loved each of the 3 books in the series.
I now have to wait on the next book but I have been dragged into the story and the wait is going to be difficult. I just know that I will enjoy reading the next book that much more as I have read each of the prior books back to back and have been amazed at how I loved the first so much and then the 2nd that much more and by the end of the 3rd I could not imagine that I loved that book even more than the first 2. I am so looking forward to the next that I feel like a child waiting for Christmas.
I have enjoyed EVERY book that I have read by Ivan Kal and I am going to enjoy all of his coming books.
He is definitely one of my top 3 authors.

This is just terrible. Half a chapter is dedicated to reading out that particular side character's stat sheet.
Also, what is with these different POVs? This is worse than book two.

Oh boy. Book four is going to be conflict. Ryun will be going vengeance crazy. That guy just can't catch a break. Tries to just live his life and people just keep interfering.

I hope book four is less POVs than this. Book one was mostly Ryun, and that is why I continued the series. Stop pushing more POVs and their stats.
I know book four is already written (I already have it), I just hope the author went back more to book one.

An interesting fantasy novel that suffers from too much effort pontificating on levels, perqs, skills, etc. There are whole chapters on data sheets. I found I almost lost nothing by skipping or skimming all such content and focusing on when the plot actually pushes forward. What is most interesting is the series' willingness to move past the hard duality of good vs. bad while still trying to define what is good or better and to whom one helps. Still, like most of these LitRPG books, the violence and killing is a troubling constant.

Book 3 of Infinite Realms. The series continues to evolve and grow stronger as we follow Ryun and Zack. I enjoyed several points in this book. Especially poniente was that we tend to not try to continue to better ourselves and push ourselves as we grow older. It is interesting to see as the new generation takes over from the previous one. Overall several good insights. Still language and adult themes make this more appropriate for a more mature audience.

Book 3 - A Phoenix rising from the ashes of book 2

Brilliant! Loved this book.
After what I thought was a disastrous book 2 (the Zach effect) we have this fantastic instalment.
The Zach effect was addressed as he had fewer chapters. Still think he has an easier ride. But definitely less annoying.
Ryun is just such a pivotal and interesting MC.
Anyway …. This is a must read if you’re invested in this realm.

I read it elsewhere

A very complex system that is actually three systems in one.

It’s fun to see how the villain becomes a hero to some and the hero became a bit of a villain.

This was written as a serial, so while it ends as a cliffhanger it was really the only place to break the flow.

I’ve read further than this. Massive power ahead.

Most epic story I've read in years!

Honestly, an in depth story with so many well thought out details and progression paths. Very well written and has grabbed my attention from the start, only got better from there. A must MUST read for any litrpg fan. By the way, volume 4 is out on royal Road. I had to carry on reading!

Amazing addition to the series

The story that was on the preliminary stages has now moved ahead to the big leagues.
The book has focused both on the action as well as emotional aspect, we can see our main characters growing both in power and as person. Overall my favourite book so far.

Another exciting volume in the story. Always feels like the books end right when we get to the interesting part. Always cliffhangers.

As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.

Another amazing addition to the series. Every chapter is perfect and each character is amazing. I love how each small story and interlude contributes to the plot in the climax of the book. I’m enjoying this series immensely. Ivan Kal is one of my new favourite authors.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ - i mean as far as competition or tournament arcs go this one wasn't particularly captivating or novel. however, the fact that this book didn't just focus on the tournament is what made it interesting and i liked seeing all the previously laid world building foundations finally start to come into play. also i loved the reunion between zach and ryun and the progression of both of them both in skills and personal growth

It’s alright. I really like fighting tournaments. The fights are pretty cool too. Zack and Ryun meet again in this book, which has been anticipated since the beginning of the series. I still think there are too many characters/plot lines going on. Major content editing is needed. The character screens are becoming too redundant at this point and should just be skipped.

Great Series

This story of the last two rankers from an Earth integration going to a higher planet was fantastic. There’s a lot of pov’s of different people which I’m not a fan as I can’t live through the Mc. The did it well nonetheless as I wasn’t able to stop reading it straight through.

fun

Riun is slowly taking to leadership and Zach is growing. They go to the tournament. Fight and place and make names for themselves. The bad guys unleash an evil army on everyone and they work together to stem the flow and escape. The future will hold change for the world.
Fun read. Good continuations. I really enjoyed the narrator. Please enjoy

Book: The Centennial Tournament

The tournament is a focal point in bringing a lot of the characters together. It also advances Ryun's and Zach's story while fleshing out the powers and unasked questions. The overall story is long, really long, but somehow Ivan Kal manages to keep it all interesting. And also upped the intensity and action.

Big event at the end. The consequences were dire. And no one was ready for it. Can wait to read the next book.

Much better than the second book. But can I just say that making half of the characters we met gay was a mistake? I have nothing against same-sex relationships, but this is too much — statistically, it’s highly unlikely that so many characters would all be in lesbian relationships. It feels more like a commercial choice than anything else.

Another great book

As you can probably guess, I liked the book, though I wasn't a big fan of all the interludes. Sure they were important for the world building and understanding what was going on, but I do miss the good old days when it was just Ryun and Zacharia.
