The Unified Civilized Council has been assaulted by hundreds of Harvester Class Precursor Autonomous War Machines, each the size of Australia, and each bent on eliminating life in order to secure and harvest the resources of the galaxy for themselves. The only force able to stand up to the PAWM is the recently discovered Terran Confederacy of Aligned Systems. The Mad Lemurs of Terra and their allies are more than willing to stand against the PAWM forces, even as the Unified Council flees from every battle. This is presenting its own problem as the Confederacy holds fast to a belief that the Unified Council does not.
“Behold Humanity! (Behold, Humanity Book 2),” a follow-on to the quite good Book 1, seriously disappoints due to horrendous proofreading [some examples on Goodreads], and numerous vignettes of the larger story arc that are hippy-dippy, touchy-feely dumb as a bag of rocks, undercutting the good pieces of the story arc contained within the whole.
There’s much hand squeezing, hand holding, hugs, teary eyes, and full-on crying jags that surround the sickly sweet vignettes of an alien ambassador that resembles a four-armed, stuffed teddy bear.
Doesn’t work for this reader, and the same for the lack of effort proofreading.
It's actually rare that I tear up or get emotional over fictional characters, but what Ralts writes succeeds in making my heart ache. Through trial by fire beings learn what it's like to be free, through humanity they learn the loss of our closest friends and companions.
Once again, Ralts Bloodthorne brings even minor, passing, characters to life and leaves the feeling of raw emotion and leaking eyes... Either that or the wordsmith has hired particularly stealthy onion ninjas.
The first 25-30% is a bit disappointing because it is just carnage, war and confusing battle without purpose. It seems to be a bit too 40K oriented. Then the hints of a major plot start appearing and the optimism vibe picks up again, and the book starts being enjoyable.
I first found this series when it was called “first contact “. It was narrated by Agrosquirrel. And it was through him that I found it here With its updated name, and I chose to purchase a membership so that I could read the whole series!! I love every single mashed up reference, and every mangled idiom and historical figure.
There is something deeply satisfying about watching ordinary people do something extraordinary. This volume drives deeper into some stories, starts others, and ends a few. All of them are exceptional, some will bring tears of joy or pain.
A blast to read. Nothing serious here but if you love Sci-fi and just want to be entertained this is awesome. I just really wish the publisher had put a little effort into proofreading. Just like the first book it's loaded with errors.
When reading the First Contact series you need to keep in mind that this was being made up on the fly, day by day, one post at a time by a first time author; he was worldbuilding in the first two or three books to lay the groundwork for an as yet unrealized epic future. It's at 10 volumes published as of today, with at least one or two more to come to finish off all 1000 posts of the series.
And there are rumors of there being a Second Contact in the future.
This is a truly interesting story with multiple main characters in multiple different plot points that we’ve together into an interesting science fiction military story.
