Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day.The Christmas season easily overwhelms, and meaning can be lost in the busyness. In Tidings of Comfort and Joy, Mark M. Yarbrough reminds us why we celebrate. These twenty-five short devotions focus December on Jesus through a combination of Scripture reflections, winsome stories, advent applications, and guided prayers. This is a book that you and your family will turn to annually, as you prepare your heart for the wonder and meaning of Christmas.
Yarborough does a wonderful job calling us to reflect on the events and people surrounding the Christmas story in Scripture. It’s not a deep, thinking book, but it combines modern illustrations and stories with the Biblical account in a way that does call you to meditate on the truths presented.
A good devotional book for Advent - well at least the first 25 days of December ;-) Whilst I don’t agree with all the author has to say, I appreciated his illustrations and liked his approach - especially his use of both Old and New Testament.
How can you put Jesus back at the center of your Christmas season? In Tidings of Comfort and Joy, Mark M. Yarbrough brings us 25 devotions leading to Christmas.
A Resource and Guide for Advent
In about 150 pages, Yarbrough writes with winsome character and theological depth. Each devotional is about 5 pages, perfect for reading in your morning quiet times or evening family worship times. Scripture passages and prayers are included, making it an excellent resource and guide for Advent.
Yarbrough shares personal stories as well as Scriptural insight. He is also creative. For instance, he tells us of a fictional character named Baruch – a temple recorder who is fascinated by the story of Simeon and Anna. Yarbrough’s writings helped spark my imagination and brought back some wonder in my Christmas season.
Christmas Throughout Scripture
I loved how this devotional took me through the entire Bible. I believe that Christmas is best appreciated in light of the entire Biblical narrative. From Genesis to Revelation, Yarbrough shows that Christmas is all around Scripture.
What I most appreciated were the Advent Applications at the end of each text. They are calls to action for worshiping God and serving others. His applications often include listening to different Christmas carols in light of what was learned in the devotion.
Experience His Presence
This book will help you make sure that you don’t miss Jesus this Christmas. He came to our rescue, and he is our reward. Experience his presence, comfort, and joy.
I received a media copy of Tidings of Comfort and Joy and this is my honest review.
A very nice Advent devotional full of pastoral insights and some fun stories. Yarbrough’s style is certainly more colloquial than theological but his insights and down-to-earth reflections grew better as the book went on. His pastoral heart certainly comes through and it was perfect for my daily personal Advent meditations. I would recommend this to anyone, including those who have never concentrated or focused on the Advent season with reflections on our Savior. A very good book!
Bringing in Christmas Day at midnight…bc of hair Conditioning time left room for me to read, grateful for that.
This book, not bad, sort of “meh.” The issue is, I struggle with devotionals. It’s biblically sound. But it’s not something I’d go back to year-to-year. Thankful I read it. Thankful for his perspective.
Sadly, still on search for my annual advent study - welcome to any and all suggestions.
I was really struggling with feeling the Christmas spirit this season, so I ordered a few books to do some daily study, this being one of them. I got this too late to read it all through advent, but the few weeks I read were warm, to the point, and a good mix of author stories and more biblical devotionals. I enjoyed his style, and it was really nice way to start my mornings as we got closer to Christmas.
A wonderful collection of 25 short devotionals designed for the Christmas season but good any time of year. The author includes delightful personal anecdotes from his life along with solid, Biblical truths.
Book 127 of 2024. [Devotional] ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Read this book next December 1st, to prepare for the Christmas season, I will probably read it again then, too.
