He’d do anything to keep her safe...except give her up.
Declan lost her once. Never again. He is an archmage. Fearsome. Terrible. Divine. Yet deadly whispers dare echo in his ear. None more threatening than those of his still-incomplete mate bond and his love’s failing health. In a twist of irony, he must now protect his mate from the greatest danger she's ever faced...Himself.
Evangeline was raised to be an apothecarist, not an archmage’s queen. She knows nothing of the subtle maneuverings of court life, and despite her awakened memories, she remains painfully human. Too human to claim an archmage for a mate. But Declan’s contentious council and her questionable mortality aren’t the only things she has to worry about. The secrets of her past are catching up, and even her all-powerful lover may not be able to keep her safe…
Winter Sun is the seductive sequel in the Warriors of the Five Realms adult fantasy romance series that will submerge you in a dazzling court of deadly secrets and deception lurking in every shadow…
Author’s Note: While Winter Sun is a full-length, interconnected standalone with a guaranteed HEA, reading Little Fire (Book 1) will enhance your reading experience. Mature themes and content. Reader discretion is advised.
Hollee Mands writes her stories in the land called Melbourne, where the weather is as capricious as her imagination. When not stuck in a daydream, writing—or thinking about writing—she's juggling her tiny, spirited tyrant, conquering the demands of her day job, escaping between the pages of a book, exploring new recipes in the kitchen, or embarking on some other epic household adventure... all with a cuppa in hand and a podcast in her ears.
I have a terrible book hangover. Usually, I write the review immediately after I finish reading the book, but in this case, I had to wait because I wasn't ready to say goodbye. I loved Declan and Evie's story so much that when it ended, it felt like I was losing a precious part of myself.
It took me around 9 hours to finish reading it. My eyes were glued to the screen, and I barely moved in that time like I was hypnotized by the words and my imagination. The author has the ability to weave magic into her writing and hold the readers' attention till the last page.
Coming to the plot, there were twists throughout the book that kept things interesting. Evie and Declan had fallen in love during the previous book, but this one tested the strength of that love. They both faced challenges individually and as a couple. I have to admit I had the urge to yell at both of them at times, but they managed to sort out their problems in a healthy manner.
The romance was well done with some swoon-worthy moments. Others were light-hearted and fun but still had a great impact. The book maintained a good balance in terms of the characters' emotions.
The supporting characters were equally amazing. I love books with the found-family trope and each character had an important role to play in moving the story forward. Some unexpected truths came to light, which made me change my opinion about a particular person.
A few flashbacks gave further insight into Evie's life, and after that ending, I'm curious to see how the revelation is explored. The finale was action-packed, and what came after that was beautiful. I couldn't have been more happier.
While I'm sad that Declan and Evie's story is over, I'm also glad that the author decided to end it here. Otherwise, the story would have dragged unnecessarily. I'm very excited for Gabriel's story; he is another one of my favorites.
I recommend this book to all fantasy romance lovers. You'd have to read Little Fire first, but the books are worth it. If you like broody and broken male leads in love with kind and strong females, then this book is definitely for you.
A lovely first read of February 2022. There were times I could not get behind Declan, but I was obsessed with Evie and Declan grew a lot over the course of the book. An interesting parallel to the path Tamlin and Feyre took in ACOMAF, but with a happy ending between Declan and Evie in which Declan got called the fuck out and learned to be less of an overprotective ass and acknowledge Evie's power and ability to stand on her own.
I really enjoyed this one! The magic and world-building was fantastic and so much happened across the two books. I'm excited for the third to be published later this year and to read the prequel, Lullaby Scars, which tells the love story of two side characters.
Ok I take it back. I don’t want a Declan in my life, I want a Gabriel.
I found this one pretty boring. I wasn’t interested it the plot, so much was just glossed over and not developed, and overall just felt very disconnected with the story. Oh also, Declan turned into an insecure dick and they couldn’t have a mature conversation to save their lives.
I also hated how weak and naive they made Evangeline. Not just physically weak but overall. There was a reason for her physical weakness but, I just like strong FMCs more.
I really wanted to like these books because the covers are so pretty but I just couldn’t love them.
3.5 “Seeing you like that was enough to break me again"
“She may be my little fire, but he was her winter sun.”
The reviews are right: the sequel to Declan and Evangeline's romance is so much better than the first book! After finishing the second book that wraps up Declan and Evangeline's story in Warriors of the Five Realms series, I am happy to recommend this series to anyone interested in fantasy romance!!
I've been trying to get into a few fantasy romances but couldn't stay focused. This was just what I needed and I'm not even sure how I stumbled upon this gem.
I love a cold hero turned needy, down on his knees for his queen :) Declan is so insecure but done right, it makes you feel for him in a way that I didn't really in the first book. Also, the heroines are usually the ones pining and overthinking so it's a nice reversal when its the hero who is overthinking things.
Their story was worth two stories. Winter Sun is filled with all the angst, worry, political intrigue, civil war machinations that I love in a good fantasy romance...
The world-building is spectacular. I am so in it for the continuation of this series. I need mooooore. Do we get a story with Zion? I'll read Gabriel's story. Thank you Hollee Mands!!!
At the end of Little Fire, I wondered how it could possibly get better. WINTER SUN is how. Intrigue and revelations, cozy romance and torrid longing, kingdoms and hearts at stake…all in Hollee Mands’s quintessential prose.
OH MY FANTASY READER LOVING HEART! I loved this book! This kind of story is why I love fantasy romance. Super uber powerful alpha male humbled by as sweetheart slip of a woman that is powerful all on her own. But she doesn't realize how strong she is. She has to be be put in the fire so to speak. But even when she thinks she is not his equal, she never let his autocratic alpha behavior run over her. I loved Evie. I loved Declan. Uhg! I loved it. It made me excited to be reading! Declan and Evangeline make my favorite couples list. They were up there with Raphael and Elena- Guild Hunter and Cat and Bones- Night Huntress. Elite status for me.
This book picked up right where Little Fire ended; so definitely read that one first. (It's fantastic too; so no hardship.)Declan and Evie were struggling to find their groove so to say. There were threats lurking about every corner and they didn't know who to trust. Evie's need to prove herself and Declan's need to shelter and protect her clash. But they have to come together if they are to survive and complete their bond.
I'm not giving this book justice with this review. Just read it. If you enjoy fantasy romance, start with Little Fire, (really you should start with Lullaby Scars- it's a prequel that has important side characters from these two stories. But you don't have to.) buckle up and enjoy the journey. A top read of 2022.
Now I can't wait for Gabriel and Shyaree! Happy reading!!
Back in the day before I went almost exclusively Romance, I read quit a bit of Fantasy but Fantasy romance books have been few and far between. One of my goals this year was to get into them more and it took me until mid December to actually do it. But I made an excellent choice with new author Hollee Mands. I’m going to make this brief and then come back with a longer review since this is the second book and has the same characters so while I recorded the first book, Little Fire, as well as the prequel book, Lullaby Scars, I haven’t written a review for either of them yet. It doesn’t make sense to do a review of this book before the other ones so I’m going to them first and then come back to this one. Advance notice though, I loved all three books.
4.5 ⭐️ I loved it. Not as much as Little fire, but I still loved it. Might be because of the pacing, as this book, as well as the first, has no dull moments. The plot continues being just as good, and by the end I wanted more of Declan and Evangeline. I know the next book is Gabriel’s, but I hope we’ll get glimpses of Declan and Evie too 🥰
Having read both Lullaby Scars and Little Fire earlier this year I had no choice but to continue to fall in love with the gorgeous realm and beautiful characters the author has created
Winter Sun is a romantic fantasy filled with absolutely everything you could want to make it your new favorite book. Picking up almost right were Little Fire left off we follow Declan and Evangeline's relationship and delve deeper into these fantastic characters finding that all happily ever afters take some work.
If you thought Evangelines character grew in book one just wait until you follow her journey in Winter Sun - in this book she has a whole mess of threats both old and new rising up to meet her but rises to the challenge and becomes the fierce female we got glimpses of in Little Fire, giving a whole new meaning to the endearment her Archmage calls her by.
Now Declan, what can I say about this perfectly imperfect Archmage except that I absolutely love him. Declan is so different from all the other leading male characters you read about - I mean sure he’s tall, dark, absurdly handsome, and wields a fierce amount of power but there is so much more to his character and his love for Evangeline that makes this book such an epic romance.
There isn’t a single thing I do not love about this book or the previous books in this series - the writing is stunning and flows across the pages wrapping you up in the story and refusing to release you until you’ve reached the final pages.
The Warriors of the Five Realms is one of my absolute favorite series on my bookshelf and I cannot recommend these books enough. If you love action, adventure, romance, fierce females, and magic wielding warriors with hearts of gold then this is the series for you.
I didn’t think it was possible for this series to get any better than Little Fire, but Winter Sun proved me wrong! It’s pushed this series to the top of my favorite fantasy reads, and I can’t wait for book 3!
“Her skin took on a luminescent sheen as though the sun rose within her body. Bright, warm, incandescent. Everything he imagined love to be and more.”
I was scared going into this read because Little Fire was a perfect book. But boy was I being dumb 🙄 Winter Sun was equally fantastic, testing Declan and Evie… with political intrigue, action packed scenes and “what-just-happened twists” that left me equal parts surprised and relieved. I got so protective of Evie - not like you archmage 😂 - that I was truly feeling mürderous at one point and cursing her kind heart… I would not be has understanding nor forgiving 👀 I must confess, however, that while my focus should have been on the battle when they roamed the capital… I just kept thinking “he went to show her the sea” 🥹🥹 because Gabriel is the freaking MVP (a Rhys, right?! @charliesbookrecs )and I need his book right now 😩 the sea. Because she wanted to see the sea. I can’t you guys… I need a moment. 😭
Evie’s arc was pure perfection and Declan’s heart the precious gem we always knew he had inside. Adult. 5 stars ⭐️
Anddddd we’re back for the sequel to Declan and Evie’s story! I always get nervous whenever I start a sequel to a book I love because my expectations are rarely ever met. Winter Sun beat the second book slump and did NOT disappoint me! I loved diving back into the world of fae, archmages, and romance! Winter Sun picks up right after Little Fire, several months after the Unseelie Court showdown from the first book. Declan and Evie are navigating an unfifilled mating bond, political maneuvering, and a mysterious illness plaguing our girl, Evie. I loved that we got to see our main characters navigate a relationship that is for all intents and purposes unequal in power. Declan is extremely powerful and Evie feels she cannot be a perfect mate for someone like him. (She’s wrong, but I totally get where she’s coming from.) It’s nice to see a heroine that is plagued with insecurity but who pushes through it to really find herself. Declan. My sweet, murderously protective archmage. I love this man. The lengths he’s willing to go to for his and Evie’s relationship is what dreams are made of. Evie coming into her power and navigating who she currently is, recovering her memories, and fighting for her relationship was such a nice character progression. I don’t want to spoil any plot points, but the twists and betrayal in this sequel truly threw me for a loop. So. Good. Favorite scene: the burning beach if you know, you know. This has truly been one of my favorite new series of 2021. I see we’re getting my boy Gabriel Blacksage’s book next and I am foaming at the mouth for it!!! I was so excited to receive an ARC for Winter Sun thanks to Hollee! Please keep blessing us with your talent!
4.5 stars. Great conclusion to this two-part love story. Book 3 (not out yet) is someone else’s story, so you can totally read book 1 & 2 without waiting for 3.
These two characters love each other sooooo much. It’s adorable. But they have so much standing in their path and they both make some mistakes (mainly him, but you can’t blame him after his 400 year history, or her after her childhood trauma). This series gripped me emotionally. I loved their fierce commitment to each other, and my heart broke whenever they stumbled. It’s a great journey to get them their long-term HEA.
Normal I go for stories with tougher chics, and this girl was very against violence, but she was definitely tough in her own way. She could stand up to a lot and she would always put herself on the line to save others. That’s a toughness of it’s own. And the book did not lack in action or violence just because the FMC wasn’t some warrior hero. It had plenty of that too.
Unbelievably good. I was worried it wasn't as good as the first one but I was so wrong. The pace of this book is so good, all the small moments leading up to the fantastic main plot of the book. There's not one loose tie in it. And I just keep falling for these characters. Both Declan and Evangeline. Declan keeps on being the amazing man, shown his flaws and insecurities but all of that just made him even more lovable. And Evangeline... She had such a great character development in this one. Fearful, strong and caring - she kept on being the sweet Evangeline but finally found her power and her worth and fought for it to be known to others. And what I absolutely loved is how both characters are great as individuals, stronger together but also equals. As for the fantasy aspect of the book... World building keeps on being insanely good and so addicting. I cannot wait for the next book.
I gotta start by saying I think this is my least favourite of the series. I really struggled rating this book and was hesitating between giving it a 3 or a 4. But when I think of books that I gave a 3 stars to I think this book is better. The ending was epic and I’ll get to that but I’ll start with what I didn’t like first.
When you think of the plot nothing major actually really happens until the last quarter of the book.
At the end of book 1 Evie said yes to completing the bond with Declan so I was surprised and disappointed to find out book 2 starts 6 months after the events of book 1 and they still haven’t completed the bond. I was hoping to see Evie and Declan adjusting to their new life together as bonded mates and what that meant for the realm. I did like that they dealt with the fact that not everybody on the council and Echelon accepted her. But I feel the same themes could have taken place with them bonded. It just felt unnecessary and very frustrating to read.
I was hoping for more action and adventure. I did love the part where Declan visited the animati realm. That was awesome. But sadly a big chunk of the book is just stagnant. And I felt like Declan telling Evie what to do was sooooo repetitive omg.
I also didn’t like how weak Evie was in this book. You’d think Declan would support her learning her powers and have her trained I don’t know. She just did nothing most of the book and it wasn’t until the last quarter of the book that she bossed up.
Another thing that bothered me is that mysterious burned up survivor in book 1 just vanished.
And finally another thing that really bothers me is the secondary characters’ development. Great world building but man when it comes to supporting characters and their relationship with the main characters there was something missing for me. Maybe it’s because I started with the prequel but I really don’t like how Killian and Mailin aren’t really contributing much in the actual plot. They’re really just in the background just healing or reporting Declan. Like they’re not actively involved in the plot. There isn’t really anything that happens with them. They’re just there. And it really annoys me because I love Killian so fucking much.
I also love Alex and Gabriel. I was shipping Gabriel and Notto but I guess it’s going a different direction lol
I really love the battles and fights at the end and the intensity. And I’m excited about finding out more about Zion. Like I said the world building and overall story is amazing and I love it. But this book was super stagnant and it felt like it could have been so much more than just Evie being stuck at the castle and doing nothing.
Neither book 1 or 2 have topped the prequel for me. And frankly I was hesitant about continuing the series. But knowing that the next book focuses on Gabriel has me relieved and excited for the next one!
I really expected to love this novel after reading it's predecessor. And although it wasn't bad....it wasn't quite that good either. This book fell prey to a predictable story, characters that were dysfunctional and didn't make sense, and a semi weak conflict/villain.
So our story picks up where it left off: Zephire has escaped, Declan and Evie still have an incomplete mate bond, Evie doesn't have full control of her powers, and to top things off, she keeps having fainting spells.
Things start off pretty well honestly; with enough drama to reel you in, and enough information to help jog your memory of some of the things that happened in the last book. But as the story progresses, you easily lose sight of what the true conflict of the story is. Things suddenly pick up again around the 70% mark, but at that point, it's pretty obvious how the story will end. At no point in this book was I biting my nails, or at the edge of my seat, but I wont lie, the story kept me properly engaged and the pacing was good.
And despite the story being pretty predictable, I didn't dislike, I just felt like it could have been executed better.
My problems lay with our characters; Declan and Evie.
Let's start with Evie. She's still struggling with her capricious powers at the beginning of this book. Which makes it hard for her to protect herself and be an equal to Declan. This also makes the prejudice/racisms she experiences with the mages in Amereen difficult seeing that she's received a lot back lash for being with Declan and being considered "unworthy".
Evie handles this as well as can be expected by trying to master her powers and trying to support Declan in any way she can. But she inadvertently becomes the damsel in distress multiple times in the story, and that just got old. I didn't mind it so much in the first book, but in this one, it really irked me. Even when Evie recovers her powers, she's only so useful. I think it's her personality and how she uses her powers that got me more than anything. She's just way too trusting, and way too kind, to the point of it being unrealistic.
She's one of those heroin's that's all sunshine and rainbows no matter how diabolical, evil, or just plain murderous everyone is around her. And I hate people like that. You know those people that are just so optimistic and happy that it pisses you off? That's Evie...
I understand what the author was trying to do here. Declan is a straight up asshole. So Evie is the Ying to his Yang. So she has to be this perfect, loving, forgiving creature to balance him out. But it just ended up making her unrelatable and made her feel a little fake. Yes, there are those times where she gets angry, or sad. But she gives in way too easily to Declan and other people's betrayal's.
Which brings me to Declan.
In the first book we were still getting to know him. And he seemed like an alright guy; broody, an asshole, insensitive, depressed, but he had potential. But in this book I went from thinking Declan had potential to thinking he was a dysfunctional, possessive, jerk. Something that they kinda touch upon in this book, but not to the point where I feel it is resolved.
Declan physically hurts people when he's angry (except Evie of course), he's super controlling and possessive, he's dense when it comes to Evie's want and feelings, and he has some serious anger management issues. I appreciated the conflict the author tried to make with these two. It proved mildly entertaining.....until it just went unresolved. Evie essentially just forgives Declan for being an ass, and he pouts like a kicked puppy and apologizes. But....doesn't really change.
There's a strong dynamic of everyone not wanting Evie and Declan to be together. They obviously love each other, but just aren't compatible because they're different races, and from different cultures. I was getting very Edward and Bella vibes here.
But all the conflict that initially arises with why these two shouldn't be together in the beginning of this book, and even in the last book, kinda get's marginalized towards the end. It was more of we beat the bad guy now all of our problems are resolved kind of thing. And that just felt like a weak resolution. And a cop out. Because the outside conflict of everyone not wanting them together was just mild in comparison to the complete incompatibility that is Declan and Evie. I mean, these two are so completely fucking different to the point of it being unhealthy.
For example; Declan thinks it's perfectly fine to mind fuck someone to the point of them going insane if needed. He's willing to do this to get information about who's been threating Evie. Evie obviously isn't okay with this and says so. She's internally horrified at the idea of anyone doing that to someone. To which Declan casually replies that he wont do it if she doesn't like it. Granted, the only reason he decided not to do it was because he knew it would upset Evie. It's almost equivalent to being in love with an assassin and said assassin suggest torturing someone for information, and the only reason he doesn't is because he realizes how much that terrifies you. But he definitely would have done it otherwise.
There were a lot of other moments in the story where Declan came off and a super stalker and/or just unhealthily obsessed with Evie. I'm sorry, when I need my space from you cause you pissed me off and was physically violent towards multiple people I care about, but you stand outside my bedroom window for days wanting me to forgive you? Ehhhh, it just gave me serious creep vibes.....
All in all, I didn't hate this book, I just felt it could have been exponentially better. Especially where the characters are concerned. If the characterization had been executed better and the story wasn't so predictable, this would have been an easy 5 stars for me. The most appealing thing this series has going for it is the world building. It's refreshing and unique. I really hope the next book is better. I'm considering reading it, and I'm glad it features different characters, but I will definitely need a break to forget how terribly mediocre this book was. 3 stars.
Did I lose sleep..yes. Will I regret it, no I don't think I will. Love this world, the characters and the writing!!!! Absolutely cannot wait for the next.
My Lord Hollee knows how to write a MAN. Let me tell you. Declan is allll man my friends. Holy archmage, I volunteer to be Evangeline #onGod. Sexy, devoted, obsessed, possessive, and heartwrenchingly sweet — Declan is one of the best mc love interests I've read this year.
This book was a whole bundle of emotions with 2 fantastic MC pov. I very rarely love both the FMC and the MMC, but these two characters and their chemistry are so natural and striking that I couldn't help but adore them together, separate, and as a unit.
The story picks up from where book 1 left off. There is a lot of heartache, suspense and even mystery. You'll be kept on your toes with this one but it's absolutely worth the read and you'll be left satisfied.
I will definitely be adding this to my reread pile and buying physical copies. Can't wait for the next installment.
Hear me out, hear me out. Yes, it's an unfinished series, but from here on out, there are only single-book standalones. Don't worry, I checked with the author... Because I know you all don't want to get into a series with cliffhangers. But here I am asking you to come on this ride with me because it is so worth it. And we are all catching this train before it leaves the station - these haven't gone viral just yet.
📚 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲: Fantasy, Fae/Mage
📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Declan is an archmage, ruling his lands with an iron fist and the coldness in his heart. Until one day, when invaders break into his land, and he sees Evangeline fighting for her life. He attempts to rescue her, but the pair get stuck in a portal and thrown into an unforgiving realm of death and demons. And that's only the beginning of Little Fire and the story of Declan and Evie.
🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: Whew! I can not give away spoilers here - I just can't. But let me tell you what I can.
The blurb for this book says that if you like Sarah J. Maas and Laura Thalassa, you will definitely like this series. And when I read stuff like that, I tend to roll my eyes. They're the best at what they do, so I usually don't even compare others to them.
But when I finished these two books, I couldn't help but note that the comparison was spot on. These books were just perfection from start to finish, earning them the first five-star rating of the year from me. Declan was perfectly tortured... He was hardened and vulnerable and not afraid to admit his feelings for Evie. Evie was a apothecary's daughter thrown into a life-and-death situation with Declan, where they obviously fell for each other, but when they are rescued and return home it was so fun to read her surprise when Declan refuses to let her go despite their differences in stature.
After the end of book one (no cliffhangers, than god), I wasn't sure I needed a second book. But when I read Winter's Sun, I was floored by how the story continued and the growth in both Evie and Declan's character. There's no way you don't love Declan... he's dark and powerful but his POV makes you want to hug him and tell him everything will be ok.
The magic, the lore, the twists and turns were all fun. If you liked The Bargainer series, you'll love these two books. And then we get more - coming in 2022, some of the main characters in the book will be getting their own standalones. But there are no cliffhangers, and some absolutely sweet happily ever afters in these two, so you'll be held over until then.
Yes. This book is amazing. The characters, the plot, the world. Everything is so easy to understand and follow along. I need more please. I cannot wait for Gabriel’s book.
I have to stop expecting the sequels to be better than the original.
I wish fantasy authors would stop treating the thesaurus like a bible. It's actually okay to use 1 and 2 syllable words sometimes. Preferable even, if the alternative is prose so purple it constantly takes the reader out of the story. Just like before, the story was enjoyable enough but the language was so oddly formal in the most random places that I had to put effort into suspending my disbelief. I don't know if it's because so many fantasy books are set in vaguely medieval eras but the use of florid language/dialogue is one of my greatest pet peeves in the genre.
" The masculine lump in his throat moved "???????
Aside from that, it felt like the author was trying to shove as much action as possible into this book. I understand that the 3rd book is going to focus on a different character(s) (which was hinted at) but I have never enjoyed a book that starts at a 6, coasts at 10, and then hurtles to a conclusion. Constant fight scenes, more sexual assault, ... It's all too much to keep track of.
I don't think I'll be reading the 3rd book in the series. I got a somewhat satisfying conclusion to this story and not enough of the lore to keep me intrigued. 2.5/5 stars.
The continuing of Evies and Declans story from Little Fire. Evies is growing from a powerless and weak girl to a formidable partner for an archmage. We got to see more of the five realms what I liked a lot. Really beautiful second part. Looking forward to Gabriels story. I received an ARC for an honest review. A lot of thanks to Ms Mands for providing me with an ARC and for creating and writing this wonderful world.
Here we continue the story of Declan and Evie, just like the first book this does not end in a cliffhanger. Storyline is good, romance gets better and I really do enjoy the supporting cast. Only reason I didn't give this a five is because again we go through a slow start. Not only that but we go through a long period of dealing with insecurities and a lull of communication between the two mc's which just leads to more problems. Without giving too much information I think I enjoyed the last 20% of this book more than anything else. Still a surprising read and series.
Want to fall back in love with reading? PICK UP THIS SERIES. I love Declan and Evie so much. Their love story is the sweetest. I got this book from Amazon last night and finished it by midday today! This world and book series is just absolutely stunning and it’s everything I love for!! I am forever on the search of the perfect fantasy romance and this book continued the perfection perfectly!!! Couldn’t say enough good things about this book and Little Fire 💕❤️💕
Book one was a wonderful bridge to the fantastic realm that IS book two!!!! This book had EVERYTHING I want in a genuinely good read. Adventure, angst, peril, love, friendship, genuinely bad guys... there was just so much good wrapped up in these pages!
Mands is self published, and you can see it in the style of editing... but you also get heavy doses of originality that today's cookie cutter books lack. I'm a new fan and can't wait to dive into more of her work!
Hollee Mands understands men, and I think that is why I love her characters so much. There have been many books that had me laughing because the alpha males in my life would never say or do the things a lot of books describe because women change some masculine tendencies to fit the narrative of what they believe women want. But in reality, men make mistakes, especially strong, leader-type men. Even though hardened men may need to learn how to allow their woman to exist without their constant protection and coddling, they aren't any less of an amazing, good person. Declan was everything I needed, that I haven't found in a MC in a while. I wish these books had a different cover, and the first book had a better title, because this series is a gem. I think more women would pick it up if the cover wasn't so cheesy. But regardless, I'm so glad I took a chance on this Kindle unlimited series. I will say, the first book would have been better without so much traumatic sexual abuse/rape details. When I read fantasy, I want an escape from reality ... it was really too much and could be triggering for some people. However, she didn't include those aspects in this book, and it was more focused on the relationship between a damaged and controlling albeit good man and his sunshine, soft, feminine and empathetic heart that walks outside his body ... his Evangeline. This romance was so real and believable. I applaud the author and look forward to more of her books. Read it!
Poor Declan. His whole spiral of not being worthy and being jealous of her proximity to Gabriel and Lex was heart wrenching to watch but made their make up so much more sweet. Our poor baby doesn’t feel worthy and it doesn’t help that he powers are wonky and the mating bond hasn’t been able to be completed on her end.
Loved this wrap up to the story although the first book where they were trapped in the death realm and getting to know one another was just so juicy that it would’ve been hard for anyone to top those feels. Luckily the author did a good job of continuing the story and the tension and now I can’t wait for book 3 to read about my boy, Gabriel!
