Alex and Dustin are excited about their senior year of college until the murders start. Who is killing people one by one and why? There seems to be no pattern to the murders...or is there?
I was 7 when I wrote my first story. It was 2 pages and about a boy and his dog. I had based the story on my dad and a dog he had. I gave it to him as gift when he came home from the hospital. Ever since then I've loved writing!
o far I love this book and I did see you at the comic con at the library I was the kid in the star wars costume but I love the cover that your friend did. good job on it.
I wasn’t sure what I thought about this book until the very end.
The story is that Dustin and Alex are a gay couple on a college campus. On Halloween night, Dustin’s roommate Frank is stabbed to death by a man wearing a chicken mask. Chicken Man, as he is called in the text, appears out of the darkness suddenly and unexpectedly, and then disappears. Then there is another stabbing. And another. And another. Each murder becomes increasingly gruesome, with the killer appearing to play with the victims’ organs, then walking away humming a tune.
This is a B movie on paper, I thought. The kind where you shriek when the knife appears out of nowhere with a swell of scary music, but you also laugh at the stupid people who walked into an obvious setup. The characters are not complex. Alex seems like a cool dude. His boyfriend Dustin has the maturity of a five-year old. He’s goofy, doesn’t get jokes, and doesn’t want to do anything but eat pizza, listen to Celine Dion, and make out with Alex. Brad, the spoiled rich guy among the frat boys, is clearly a would-be homosexual rapist, stalking Dustin.
Alex and Dustin are gay, as mentioned. Alex is black, and Dustin is Asian. In addition, there is a trans man, a Muslim girl, a set of twins, more gay, lesbian, and bi people. And Dustin, we learn at the end of the book, is on the spectrum, which explains some of his odd behaviors. It’s almost like someone set out to be as inclusive as possible on purpose.
Toward the end of the book, as the outrageous situations became even more outrageous, I found myself chuckling. Then I thought, hey, maybe this is supposed to be funny. Maybe this whole thing is campy. On purpose. Maybe this is not just a B movie on paper, but a spoof of a B movie. And I don’t know the author’s intentions because there is very little in the way of blurbage, and no published reviews, but that’s what I think. I think if you read this as a straightforward mystery novel, it is klunky and silly. But if you read it as broad comedy, it is playful in a clever way.
The book is self-published, and, like many self-published novels, suffers from a lack of professional editing. Errors of spelling, punctuation, or grammar were scattered throughout. There was “could of” instead of “could have.” There was lay/lie confusion, for example, “Alex lied down next to Duncan.” Huh? There are inconsistent verb tenses. I do find these distracting, but in a self-published book, these must be forgiven.
I could not put this book down right to the very end. Very well written. The cover art is beautiful. I highly recommended this book for anyone who loves a great mystery. It keeps you on your toes and continuing guessing on what will happen and who is doing it!!
