I love strange facts and stories and this book was a joy to read! We have Two Scrap Yards in town, so the Pepsi Story was especially fun for me to read! My neighbor And my son work/ed there!
Full disclosure, I stopped reading the book. First, the typos and grammar errors were hard to ignore. The reason I didn't finish though was the blatantly wrong information. I was going to consider these minor interpretive errors to keep the stories concise. I can't overlook them when they are so wrong that misinformation is spread. A fact checker could have corrected things like the number of states in 1920. The author asserts 50; there were 48. So, I skimmed a few after this and found more factual errors. Also, the references sections needs to be cleaned up and listed by chapter or properly in alphabetical order. As it stands now it is an unorganized mess with more typos.
This was a fun book and audio book about strange and unusual tales from history. I knew about several, but it was interesting to learn about the others. All are nice, bite sized tales of unusual occurrences that are great for trivia games and history class. I listened to this on audio and enjoyed the strange tales.
I enjoy books like this, but for goodness sake, when the author (or editors) do not fact check it makes me questions other details of narratives that are written in this book. For example, in the story, “It's Poison” the author writes that there were 50 states during the era of Prohibition. Incorrect. Another boo boo is when the author states in the story, “Celestial Fireflies” that Astronaut John Glenn was the first American to orbit earth. True. But then, the author goes on to allude that John Glenn even landed on the moon. Incorrect. And then there is the story, “The Unsinkable Kitty” where the author states the German battleship Bismark is sunk in 1939. Nope. The Bismark was sunk in May of 1941. Did this writer ever read of important events during World War II? There is more, in the story on " Ronald Reagan's LP" the author states that the Reagan presidency saw the fall of the Soviet Union and Berlin Wall. These two events happened after Ronald Reagan left office. Although, I will give President Reagan credit for starting the collapse of these two events, they both nevertheless, occurred under the presidency of George H. Bush.
I read this for our book club - it was a quick read. The stories were short and weird, but overall this was ok. It was somewhat amusing - so I didn't regret reading it. It just isn't something I would like recommend to anyone else.
An addictive fun book, great for adults and kids. My ten year old daughter loved it and so did I! Some stories are new, and others clear up rumors that I’d heard. Overall, it was a great book.
