My Heart Belongs in the Blue Ridge #2

The Heart of the Mountains

Rate this book
Can their hearts overcome the darkness of the mountains?

To escape a forced marriage, Cora Taylor travels from England to the Blue Ridge Mountains in search of her brother, who is working as a teacher in a mission school. She hopes to find a place where her nursing skills and independent ideas will be accepted and appreciated, but nothing prepares her for the wild mixture of isolation, community, brokenness, and hope within these mountains…or in the person of Jeb McAdams.

Returning from the devastation of World War 1 emotionally damaged, Jeb McAdams struggles against the rampant mountain alcoholism to soothe his nightmares. It’s easy to hide within the mountains, or it was, before Cora Taylor arrived. Now, she seems to show up at every turn, bringing her modern ideas, curiosity, and beautiful eyes with her.

Bound by their shared war history, the pair develop an unlikely friendship, which unexpectedly hints to something more. But when Cora’s desire to help the women of the mountains crosses an unspoken line, will Jeb be able to protect this feisty flatlander from the wrath of the mountain men or will he end up losing much more than his heart?

'Prayin' is where we admit we ain't the lord of our own lives.'

Where do I begin to leave a review adequate enough to convey my thoughts on what a powerful story this was? Pepper Basham is always good; I've never read a bad book by her, or even a mediocre one. But this. This wonderful story of the Appalachian people in the time period immediately after the Great War is so full of grace, forgiveness, and the mercies of God, that I found myself crying through parts of it, gasping at others, laughing some, too.

The story takes place in Maple Springs where Basham set another book earlier and this one features some of the same folks but can totally be read as a stand alone. It was so good to read how these folks lived, their way of life, their superstitions and love. There were times the reading hurt, because people don't always do the right thing, but Basham handles it so well.

The hero of this story, Jebediah McAdams, is perfect. I totally fell in love with his sweet heart and concern for others. And I loved his 'itchin' lips'. You'll have to read the story to get that one. I promise you'll like it, too. Jeb is totally unprepared for the English woman who literally falls into his arms when she runs away from home to escape an arranged marriage. And Cora is determined to be a help to these precious people as 'Nurse Woman'. Having served at the Front during the Great War, she is sure she can provide help to them. IF she can get these backward and leery folk to trust her.

Set in a simpler time in a beautiful place, this story will stay with you long after you read the last word. It will be a treasure for any keeper shelf. I know it will mine. Basham's descriptions of the mountains will have you longing to see them for yourself. This was a powerfully moving book and I adored every minute. It's the kind of book that, when you read the last word, you want to flip to the beginning and start over again. It's that good. Well done!

My thanks to the publisher and author for a copy of this book. I was not required to leave a positive review and the opinion expressed here is entirely my own.

I purchased a physical copy of this book because I absolutely had to have it on my shelves. I just finished rereading it. It was even better and more profound the second time around. I expect to be reading it again. Pepper Basham shines!!! Very highly recommended.

This was realistic fiction at its best. This historical clean romance gets a 5 ⭐️ from me. I enjoyed it so much. Watching broken people with God’s amazing grace, I fell head over heels with this story.
Pepper Basham blesses me with each of her books. She always reminds me about what’s important in life. That God does exist, even in the mess of things.

This was book 2 but doesn’t matter and can be read as a stand-alone. I thought PB created wonderful characters with suspense, love and forgiveness.
I highly recommend this jewel. Happy Reading.

The Heart of the Mountains is a fabulous story of wounded souls finding love where they least expect it. The author has created a fabulous cast of characters that tug on your heartstrings even as they supply delightful moments of light and laughter. Jeb is a hero any reader will fall in love with - strong yet tender, capable yet humble, reclusive yet protective of the outsider heroine. Cora is a spitfire on a mission, yet her heart for nursing opens her eyes to God working in ways she never expected. This is a beautiful love story filled with adventure, danger, and emotions that run the gamut from laughter to tears. I highly recommend!

The Heart of the Mountains is a beautiful story about mountain life in the Blue Ridge mountains right after World War I. The heroine, Cora is a nurse from England and arrives to flee an arranged marriage from her father. The hero, Jeb is a quiet and good man with issues from serving during the military in the great war. This book captured my attention and I couldn't put it down. I love the history, the mountain people and of course the romance. It was easy to read and I could tell the author has a passion for Appalachia and the people who live there. The gospel message is so well given and it offers hope to the hopeless. This book was so well done and I really do hope there are more books to come. 4.5 stars

This is the second book in the My Heart Belongs in the Blue Ridge with the first being Laurel's Dream.
I absolutely love this author's work! The books are down to earth and you feel so comfortable and at home.
The way the author describes the Blue Ridge Mountain area and it's people is so authentic , you really feel as if you are there right in the story with these people . It's obvious how much she loves this area and it's people.
The challenges of living in the Appalachian area are obvious with it's poverty, alcoholism, and neglect are so sad. I have visited the area many times and even married in this area. It is truly a wild and beautiful place.
The characters feel so real and very easy to connect with. I loved Cora's gentle manner and how Jeb helped her acclimate to life in the mountains.
The book is so well written and uplifting. A whole evening went by as I read this but I was so engrossed that I didn't even notice.
Trust and faith in God is woven into this story making it my favorite I have read by this author.
I recommend this historical novel to all.

Oh my word, let me take a moment to have a contented sigh...

This story was so unexpectedly wonderful! I had read some early reviews and was afraid the hype wasn't going to stand up to my highfalutin opinions. Well, let me tell you, the story exceeded the hype. Is that even possible? For me, yes!

I don't know if this love story would be considered a slow burn, but if so, I'm here for it!

Poor Cora, maybe not poor Cora. I think initially, with her baptism into the life in the Blue Ridge Mountains I was worried for her, but that lady has spunk! She is worth her weight in gold! She had a lot to prove to the mountain people, that was for sure.

And then there's Jeb who is dealing with a LOT! As you read and get to know him, you can almost feel the weight of the world (or his little corner of it) on his shoulders. There's just such a steadiness, strength, and calmness in him that even soothed me!

Of course, this story wouldn't have been nearly as "fun" without all of the rumors (ahem Imogene - who needs to be put over someone's knee), hidden people, and running for their lives. The storyline gives the reader of such a deep sense of how these people see the world and what a tight knit community they are, albeit a rather rigid one with how they see flat landers such as Cora. Like her, I wondered what beauty Maple Springs would really have, but as readers we begin to see it unfold like she does over time. We even come to love the people and their ways... mostly.

If you love, love, love a good and sweet love story, look no further. I'm NOT a fan of super quick falling in love, but the way the author wrote Cora & Jeb, it was the most natural thing in the world. There is a gift in her writing to be able to convince me to believe in it! You'll want to be sure to have a fan because even the small things will have you near to swooning.

And the faith that comes through and is lived out throughout the story is a bright spot, although it comes in the midst of so much hardship. God's plans and His timing are woven beautifully throughout the story with the characters who live out their faith. I loved how it was written into it.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the story and hope in book three that Imogene will have a "come to Jesus" moment for all of her naughtiness. And I'm talking about a grown woman by the way. lol I still have to go back to read book one, but don't feel like I missed out on anything by reading out of order.

*I received this ebook ARC for review. This is my opinion.

"I reckon there are a few good things from England".

You think? Cora Taylor and her fancy boots literally dropped into Jeb McAdams' life and had managed to upset the delicate balance of a simple man with a simple life . . . . .that wasn't even close to simple anymore. The tongues had started waggin'; the mountain had not been exactly kind to her, but Jeb had hardly met a kinder, more compassionate, more beautiful woman in all his born days . . . . and in spite of all the self-control that he could muster, she made his lips itch . . . "and that's a fact".

Cora didn't know what to expect of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains that her brother Jonathan had so fondly written about, but she was not about to become trapped into an arranged marriage with an awful man just to increase her father's coffers. Covertly hopping on a ship, she made the trek from England to North Carolina, ready to help the "Teacher Doctor" with her war-honed nursing skills. Instead, she had already been stalked by a mountain lion, hung precariously over a ravine, rescued by a mountain of a man whose steady gaze was like a clear mountain stream . . . . . what a wild, wonderful, breathtaking place to be.

Capturing the beauty tucked carefully within the harsh, often misunderstood lives of the Appalachian people, the author pens a story of authenticity, bravery, and hope. And love. Yes, love . . . the purest, sweetest, inspiring kind. . . . patient, not boastful or proud, not dishonoring or keeping a record of wrongs; instead, bearing all things, believing, protecting, persevering; for at "the heart of these mountains" is love. It's a story worth reading over and over again.

“Time had a strange way of stealing and giving, and there was not a way to predict which way it would go. Only God knew. And there was comfort in that.”
Ms. Basham paints a beautiful picture of the Appalachian Mountains that she knows so well. She crafts her characters with a realism that makes you root for them. Cora Taylor has fled England and an unwanted arranged marriage to join her Uncle and brother but does not realize what she is getting into among the mountain families, not to mention the wildlife. “In these mountains, we live strong or we die young. Ain’t no in between.” But she finds a champion in Jeb McAdams.
Told in a folksy way, the story is full of faith and life lessons, while not short on the excitement and danger. As always Ms. Basham gives us plenty of humorous relief along with a sweet romance. “Love certainly was worth being brave... with a little crazy thrown in.” Jeb has “itchy lips” toward Cora. But he was a man of integrity and promised to take care of his dead friend’s widow. He needed to seek God to find the answer of whether to honor Amos’s wish or venture into a new relationship with Cora.
A favorite character was Granny Burcham with her quaint ways and knowledge of healing.
I highly recommend this book along with the companion book Laurel’s Dream which features some of the same characters and gives a bit more background.

"Woodwork soothed him some. Prayer too. And these mountains."

An English nurse and Appalachian woodworker find a common bond in the way participation in the Great War changed them, resulting in a sweet love growing between them. Heart of the Mountains is a meandering story that reads like a love letter to the people of the Appalachians. I realized quickly after picking it up that it is the sequel to Laurel's Dream, which I have but haven't read yet. I decided to continue reading this one first so I could see how it did on its own. It did just fine, although it did make me want to read Jonathan and Laurel's story.
This book talks a lot about the challenges and beauty living among mountain people. I imagine every culture has its own challenges and beauty, but you do enjoy reading about it from someone who has obvious respect for the people and place. You get a feel in this book for the variety of mindsets you'd find in Appalachian culture, escaping stereotyping.
The action really picked up at the 94% mark, but the story kept moving enough throughout the book that I wasn't bored. And as usual, I love Pepper for her strong and meaningful messages.

"Everything changed when one rested in the confidence of being loved well and in walking in the calling God had placed upon one’s life."

I am grateful to the publisher and Netgalley for providing the ebook in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

As she stepped from the house, her bag in hand, she looked back over her shoulder. Their gazes held for a few seconds as the door closed, and Jeb knew, sure as shootin’, he was ready to take all this lip itchin’ and put it into action.

If you know anything about pivotal moments in romance novels, the heroine looking back at the hero is important. Cora definitely looks back. :-) She and Jeb are one of the best “on paper” couples. I did so love the interaction between them, their obvious differences and yet some striking similarities.

Basham is queen when it comes to writing Christian historical romance, in my opinion. Ticking all the boxes for me—witty dialogue, satisfying character growth, uncertainty and bravery, laugh-out-loud humor and lots of strong emotion—this novel made for a riveting story, along with lovable and not-so-lovable secondary characters.

I will journey time and again to my beloved Appalachian Mountains and immerse myself in whatever story this author writes. She brings the essence of the mountain folk to life with entertaining vernacular while painting lovely word pictures of the sights and sounds of life in Appalachia!

Historical fiction with deep faith encircles these mountain folks. Fans of this genre will be deeply satisfied and left longing for more stories set in The Heart of the Mountains.

What a powerful story,
The story takes place in Maple Springs, where you will learn how the mountain people lived, their lifestyle, and superstitions. In a place only the strong survive, every character will capture your attention, especially Cora Taylor.

Finally!! I have finally read my first Pepper Basham book and THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAINS blew me away. Pepper knows how to engage the reader and had me feeling as if I was right there on the trails with Cora and Jeb.

I was pulled into THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAINS from the first page and I stayed that way until the very last page. The twists and turns keep coming and I had to know how it was going to end! Every time I thought I knew where this story was going, a few pages later, Pepper Basham threw me for a loop and I knew I was wrong!

THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAINS is a quick read and unputdownable! There were quite a few times when reading it that I wanted to reach into the pages and hug a few of these people with what they were feeling and what they were going through. I found myself laughing one second and then tearing up the next. If you are looking for a beautiful story to pull you out of your book slump, you can’t go wrong with THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAINS. Pepper Basham is now an author I want to read more of.

The twists and turns in THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAINS are going to keep you up late into the night trying to figure it out. One minute you believe you know where Cora is going with her life and the next you are sitting there shaking your head, wondering what the heck just happened. I had my ideas, I had it all figured out, or so I thought, and BAM…….wrong again! Many of the people Cora came in contact with are broken. The conditions they deal with in the mountains will break your heart over and over again. But they are strong people and know how to persevere. Once you start reading, trust me, you aren’t going to be able to stop! When everything is finally revealed, well, you won’t believe it!

THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAINS begins with Cora facing many life changes. She has just run away from England where her father was arranging for her to be married to a horrible human being. I thoroughly enjoyed reading THE HEART OF THE MOUNTAINS. I loved the banter between Cora and Jeb. It is heart warming, but also a harsh reality of the situations the mountain people dealt with and it is filled with so many different emotions. There is so much going on in this story, but Pepper Basham does a wonderful job of weaving all the pieces together. All of the characters will have you feeling sad and then giggling on the same page. More than once I wanted to be there with my new found friends! Once you finish devouring this story, you are going to want to tell everyone you know about this awesome book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author through JustRead Publicity Tours. All opinions are my own.

The Heart Of The Mountains.

"The Heart of the Mountains" is a Christian romance set in 1919 in the Appalachian Mountains. Cora served as a nurse in WWI, and Jeb McAdams served as a soldier. They experienced things that changed them but which also gave them a different perspective that laid a foundation for a friendship. Cora joined her uncle and brother in the mountains to avoid a marriage she didn't desire but also to help the locals with her nursing skills. Some locals weren't happy to have another outsider influencing people, though. Between handling medical crisis and learning to avoid the dangers of the mountains (both animal and certain unfriendly people), Cora's friendship with Jeb grew as they spent time together.

The characters were complex and reacted realistically to events. The historical and setting details immersed me into the story and brought it alive in my imagination. Cora felt that God had used some bad circumstances to prompt her to go to a place where she'd find happiness and contentment helping others. There were no sex scenes or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable historical romance.

Oh, this is such a sweet story. I loved returning to this mountain and these backwoods people.
It was fun catching up with Jonathan and laurel again…. But this is Cora and Jeb’s story.
Cora leaves her home in England quite unexpectedly, due to the fact that her father has plans of marrying her off to some noble gentleman, and Cora has no say in the matter. So, without telling her brother Jonathan of her intentions, she arrives unexpectedly there at his new home, in the Appalachian mountains. The people are not sure what to think of her at first. They view her with suspicions. All except for Jeb, who is still suffering from his own trauma at being in the war.
Cora had also been to the front, so it seems they have some things in common.
This is a romance, and so some things were expected, and yes, welcomed. :) But the discovery of how it all happens along the way, well that is the beauty of this book.
If you enjoy historical fiction, you won't want to miss it!

“Maybe we can’t choose our hard, but I reckon we can choose how to live with it the right way.”

Cora and Jeb’s story is a beautiful tale of redemption, and finding purpose in the midst of heartache, pain, and regrets. Learning about the Blue Ridge Mountain culture was enlightening through the eyes of a British woman floundering to make sense of her past and present. Cora with her indomitable spirit is a wonderful heroine and I loved seeing her relationship with her brother Jonathan. Jeb’s heart for his family and community, his desire to find and create beauty, and his faithfulness even in small things make him a memorable hero. The story does address some tough issues like alcoholism, trafficking, and domestic violence but grace and forgiveness triumph to bring much needed healing. Seeing how medicine operated in 1919 North Carolina mountains was fascinating. I really enjoyed catching up with Laurel and Jonathan from the previous book in the series as well.

If you enjoy historical romance, this book is the perfect summer read for you. I received the book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.

Another home run!!! Pepper Basham is becoming a favorite. Cora Taylor is a very determined woman, once her mind is made up. This was a perfect mix of two worlds colliding and both finding a foothold to make lemonade out of lemons. Jeb McAdams is Appalachia through and through, and a man who's seen a few things, has much to offer. Explore the mountains and those who call it home, and what it takes to become part of it.

The Heart of the Mountains was such a wonderful tale! I own book one, however, I have not read it yet. That did not stop me from completely falling in love with these characters and this beautiful setting in this story.

Cora and Jeb were such caring people. They really looked out for the best of others and both of them had been through the horrors of war. They definitely had some immediate attraction between the two of them and the way their friendship grew into more was beautiful.

The author did a great job of showcasing not only the natural beauty of the land and the funny quirks of the people who were tucked away in this small Appalachian community, but she also showed the dangers of the many superstitions that were rampant in those parts. There were some instances of abuse, both of alcohol and of women, that Cora and Jeb had to deal with in the story, as well.

But even with some heavy topics, this novel was packed full of hope, the love of family, and a sweet and satisfying romance. I loved this story from start to finish!

This is SUCH a great book! This might be Pepper's best book yet but I tend to say that every time. I LOVED the setting, characters, and the dialogue. This book reminded me a bit of the classic Christy but this story is unique in its own way. Cora arrives in the mountains and the adventure begins. I love that hard things are discussed such as alcoholism and how it effects a family. I love how the relationships in this book aren't perfect and while there is a beautiful love story it isn't rushed. I love the tie in with World War I and how that is part of Jeb and Cora's story. There is humor and sadness. Forgiveness and grace. The history is superb and the story line kept me flipping the pages not wanting it to end. I really enjoyed this book and I highly recommend Basham's books!

I loved this book because the opening scene made me laugh but yet at the same time hold my breath too.
Pepper did such a great job with it that I couldn't imagine doing what Cora did and keeping my cool at the same time.
Then in another scene I definitely cackled because once again I "actually " could see it happening and the look on Cora's face was priceless.
I definitely think I have to say that this book was better than Lauren's story. Too much happening in this one!
I enjoyed every minute of this book and didn't want it to end. Pepper has such talent!
Cora was a stubborn one though. I was rooting for her the whole way through because I knew that she could tough it out so to speak.
I liked Jeb immediately too. He was pretty special in my book. You'll soon see why when y'all will pick up this book and read it.
Such a fun read! Of course, I finished it in one day once I settled down to read it. A whole evening passed but I was left feeling pretty happy about it.
I'm highly recommending this book! I wish I could give this story more than 5 stars. It's more than deserving!

Another great Pepper Basham book! If you haven't read any books from this author, and you love characters full of heart, I can't recommend her books enough.

I listened to the audiobook of this one through my library and I loved it! Cora and Jeb are the sweetest couple. They have lots of ups and downs but they are strong and able to keep going through the hard.

I loved watching them come together and help the people who live in the area. I loved seeing Cora come to love the people and the area, even though she didn't understand some of their ways, she had an open heart and mind and was willing to learn more about them and who they are.

The sweet romance was so tender. I loved seeing how both Cora and Jeb's walls were brought down and watching them grow in their trust and love for each other.

Content: Clean. This is a Christian fiction novel. There are some moments of peril. There is a character who escaped from a brothel and has a baby, there is nothing graphic. Nothing more than sweet kisses.

Happy Reading!!!

As with the first book, this did not disappoint! The Heart of the Mountains by Pepper Basham was as beautiful, heartfelt, faith filled and adventurous as the first one! 5 stars!

After reading Laurel’s Dream, I was so excited to dive back into the Blue Ridge Mountains to learn more about Cora Taylor and Jeb McAdams. Laurel’s Dream followed Jonathan Taylor and Laurel McAdams, so in this story we were blessed to see Laurel’s brother and Jonathan’s sister’s story unfold.

I live in Tennessee and love the Appalachian settings so much as it reminds me of back home in East Tennessee.

To escape a forced marriage, Cora Taylor travels from England to the Blue Ridge Mountains to find her brother, who works as a mission teacher there. She hopes to find a place where she can use her nursing skills and as she continues her travels, she meets Jeb McAdams. Jeb is returning from World War I as he meets Cora. They start to become fast friends as they face many difficulties. The story takes off from here.

Jeb and Cora are beautiful characters who have such a grounded connection together. I loved every moment they were together. Pepper Basham writes AMAZING mountain stories.

I laughed, teared up, felt their feelings – the characters in this story are beautiful. This story is filled with action, love, faith, grace, mercy, romance, forgiveness, redemption, and a beautiful family. My favorite part in this was the ending. It was beautiful and action-packed. So many beautiful southern references and I love the way they talk – it reminds me of my grandparents’ time.

I am dying to know more about other family members, primarily the missing sister we continue to hear about. I hope the next story will be about her journey! I can’t wait.

Thank you to NetGalley and Barbour Publishing for provide me with an Advanced Reader Copy to honestly read and review. I will be reading more of the Blue Ridge series in the future!

I loved so many things about this book. I didn't quite know what to expect, and it starts with some danger and excitement which pulled me right in and immersed me in the setting. The author did a great job of showing rather than telling about the personalities of her characters, and it brought them to life in my mind as I read. Cora comes from such a different culture and landscape, and I admired that she was compassionate and accepting rather than judgemental of the differences she encountered. Jeb especially felt that as she learns about his family secrets and helps as much as she can. I loved Jeb's determination to persevere through his struggles and continue to find hope and joy in his woodworking talent and his family. Cora is a healer and she works with the interesting people she encounters to learn and serve in more ways than just the physical. The sweet romance developed naturally and I enjoyed their chemistry and the common ground they find in helping the community, even at the most unexpected times.

Having please sure reading another book by Pepper Basham and thoroughly enjoying it, I thought “The Heart of the Mountains” would be not different. Actually, it was so much more!

Cora Taylor was desperate to escape her life in England, specifically from a forced marriage that her father had arranged. The only family, outside of her mother were her brother, Jonathan who was a doctor and her uncle a circuit preacher who had settled in North Carolina in the States. Fleeing London, she arrives in Maple Springs…a wild and beautiful place where she believes her skills in medicine can be useful after serving on the Front in the World War. What she did foresee was that in all that beauty, there still lies a primitive land of challenges, mountain inhabitants, and folklore.

Jeb McAdams has a kind nature and the sweetest heart. There is nothing he would not do to help the folks in the mountains. Unfortunately, he as seen his share of what the war has done to him…not just him but to any many who had to live in it. He knows this all too well as he witnessed losing his best friend to the war and having to relive the nightmare in his dreams. He somehow believes that he needs to take care of his friend’s wife who is now a widow with a small child. What he did not encounter was coming face to face with Cora.

The Blue Ridge Mountains introduces itself to Cora who manages to inadvertently gets herself into some unpredictable situations. Meeting Jeb while being rescued from a tree limb on her first day in Maple Springs, the two begin an odd friendship out of respect and their association with the War that gradually grows into romance. As this is the second book, some sub-characters are reintroduced in this story, however it can be read as a standalone. The descriptions of the Appalachians form a vivid picture in your mind and the lives of the people that live in the mountains. I loved how the author developed both character’s pain, hurts and strong will to overcome demons and misconceptions. Each character that is introduced was written so realistic, that there is no problem with believability.

This story plain and simple was just beautiful and one that I will remember. A well-written story by Ms. Basham with understandable plots and memorable characters. The pacing or start was a bit slow in the beginning but picked up about halfway into the book. A wonderfully written story and I plan on reading the first in this series. Recommend the read.

“In these mountains, we live strong or we die young.“

Pure enjoyment! From start to finish, I was entranced by this story and quickly grew to love the people of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In this amazing tale, Pepper Basham shares part of her own family history and the love, faith, and strength of a hardworking people. I absolutely adored all the characters, especially Jeb and Cora and their slow burn romance. The dialogue is outstanding and filled with humor, warmth, and faith. I loved every minute of it! This is the first book I’ve read by this author and can’t wait to read all her other books.

After returning home from nursing soldiers in WWI, Cora Taylor finds herself pressured into an arranged marriage. She flees her pampered life in England to the wilds of the Appalachian Blue Ridge Mountains where her brother and uncle live. Her experience so far is fraught with danger until she’s rescued by a handsome mountain man. His enticing licorice scent, quiet strength, and tenderheartedness draw Cora to him. While she enjoys putting her nursing skills to work and learning new remedies from “granny woman,” she isn’t sure if she’s cut out for living in these mountains.

Jeb McAdams is immediately taken with Cora. He admires her stubbornness and strength. She’s beautiful too. But, Jeb doesn’t know if he’s worthy of her and fears he might be like his father, especially in dealing with his painful memories from the war. There’s also the promise he made to his friend Amos. Yet, he can’t quite stop himself from helping her at every turn. But will helping her put them both in danger?

I loved Jeb! He’s the perfect blend of sweet and strong. I loved his humor, innocence (when it comes to women), his woodworking talent, and hardworking personality. His “itchy lips” whenever he’s near Cora made me laugh out loud. I enjoyed Cora as well. She’s always so eager to learn and help. Their romance is filled with sweet, swoony moments like when Jeb kisses the palm of her hand.

Granny Bucham, Fig, Mercy, Willa, Caroline, Sam, and all the other secondary characters were so endearing. I loved the culture, the superstitions, and strong faith. Well written themes of redemption, forgiveness, and pressing forward with faith touched my heart. I was sad to leave 1919 Appalachia, but look forward to reading the first book in the series about Laurel and Jonathan and hopefully future stories in this setting.

Highly recommend to historical romance, historical fiction and Christian fiction fans! Definitely a must read! Although it’s the second book in the series, it can absolutely be read as a standalone. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.
