A Goldilocks-inspired fantasy romance with just a hint of spice. The girl with the golden hair...
Siphons are rare creatures, supposedly born of the union of human and fae blood. How she got her ability doesn’t much matter to Wynne; all she knows is it’s a death sentence or worse if the wrong people find out about her gift. It’s too bad she was never very good at minding her own business.
... and the bear who stole her heart
An old curse grows stronger, leaving Callum Bertram sleepless and desperate. He thinks he’s found a temporary solution until a pretty young woman accidentally uses up his sleeping charm. Now, this werebear suddenly finds himself craving something more than a good night’s sleep.
I have read a lot of fairytale retellings in my life but I had yet to read a Goldilocks retelling so I was excited to dive into Bared Magic.
This book was a wonderful read. It was unsure how much plot you could get out of the original tale but Cleveland impressed me with the world she created full of shifters, magic users, and more.
Both romantic and exciting, I didn’t want to put this book down, and I’m eagerly awaiting the sequel!
*I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest, voluntary review.*
I follow the author, Sara Cleveland on Twitter and have been STOKED about this book from the moment she mentioned she was writing it. Also, having read two of Cleveland's other books, my expectations going into Bared Magic were high. Very high. I am pleased to say she did not disappoint!
In fact, Bared Magic might just be my favorite of all her books. I LOVED the fact that it was a Goldilocks retelling. I've never, ever read anything like it and the unique take on magic, a sleeping curse, and bear shifters was so much fun!
I think the magic system was my favorite thing about this book. I liked that Wynne/Goldie was a syphon and had no magic of her own. I loved all the different animal shifters and since this is only the first book in a series, I know we'll get lots more shifters soon!
As other reviewers have said, the romance between Callum and Wynne was a bit rushed. It's not a slow-burn, but it's a whirlwind, which can be just as fun to read. Both Callum and Wynne were willing to make great sacrifices for one another and I totally shipped them from the start. I was rooting for them! Slow-burn or whirlwind, that's what's important about a romance and Bared Magic definitely delivers!
Overall, this was a VERY fast-paced read with plenty of action and cuteness that kept me eager to read on. If you're a fan of fairytale retellings, definitely check this out! I guarantee you haven't read anything quite like it!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from a Goldilocks-inspired story, but this was a good read! I especially look forward to the next book after the hints the author left. My only qualms were that the romance seemed to blossom a little too quickly and easily (personal preference), and the characters spent a lot of time passing out, sleeping, and waking up (part of it is to be expected due to a curse one character has). Neither took away from the enjoyment of the story though!
I thought this story was both charming and entertaining. I really enjoyed the different werebeasts, as well as "Goldie's" own, personal ability. The characters were likeable (or incredibly unlikeable, in the case of the villains), and I'm interested to see what Cleveland does in the next book, which I assume will be a Red Riding Hood tale. Overall, a fun and easy read for anyone who enjoys fairytale retellings.
I read this as a beta reader but I also received a generous ARC copy as well and got to read the updated version. I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
What a fun world we get to explore here! The magic systems at play are such creative ones and they produce impact on how the world operates as all good systems do! We see the good, the bad and the in-between of how magic impacts everything and I’m here for it!
Then we have our main characters who are such a lovely couple! I adore their interactions, both with each other and with the world and people around them. We uncover their histories slowly and deliberately, making for a wonderful journey story.
It’s so rare to find a Goldilocks retelling and even rarer to find one with such intricacies woven into it! Definitely put this on your TBR.
This was a quick, easy, and enjoyable read. The writing style suited me perfectly and made the story easy to get into. I liked the ideas presented, of witches and shifters and various curses and magic, and the two leads are both enjoyable characters to follow. I was a little distracted with how horny they are for each other right from the get-go, but considering they are both young (attractive) adults, I can't say it's unrealistic. It was refreshing to see a female lead who knows what she wants in a book that is sex-positive without leaning too hard into it. So, if you enjoy watching two characters fall hard and fast for each other while on the run from some dangerous people, you will definitely enjoy this.
This was such a fun take on the classic story! Sweet and steamy, this fast-paced retelling is easy to read with likeable main characters and some interesting twists along the way!
Whilst some people will love the fast-paced romance, I'm more an "agonisingly slow-paced" kind of girl, and found this a bit quick for me—but again, very personal tastes.
(Also the cover is gorgeous... just putting that out there!)
This book had me hooked from the first few chapters and I wasn't disappointed. Wynne's story was interesting and kept me invested, especially as her pursuers closed in on her and her past came to light. Callum was delightful and sweet from the very beginning. But, what really stole the show for me was Rowan and Mared (hope I'm spelling that right). And the epilogue...I can't wait for Cursed Magic and I'm sure we'll be seeing more of a certain 'huntress' in red. Hopefully, we'll see more of Mared too (since I'm a little sad I didn't get to see more of her in this book).
What a charming story! Wynne lives in magical world full of were-beasts and other interesting magics, but as a siphon, she finds herself often on the run from those who misuse her own gifts. And they manage to chase her right into the cottage of three were-bears.
This is a fast-paced, light story that takes place in a intriguing and yet cozy magical world. I really enjoyed all the characters, there's quite a bit of fun action to keep them going, and I thought the audiobook narration was fantastic. The romance does happen rather quickly, but I really liked watching the connection grow from both POVs, and overall I just thought it was unique, clever adaption of Goldilocks that I thoroughly enjoyed. (4.5/5)
Thanks to the publisher for the free audible promocode!
This was such a sweet retelling! Definitely steamy in places which I loved! It had a wonderful old worldly fairytale feel to it... Filled with woodland cottages... Perfect for any cottage core lover!
I would have loved to read more on Goldies magic, and the events surrounding it, but that did not take away my enjoyment of this book.
I received an ARC copy of this book through Booksprout.
I'll start this review out by saying that while I am a big fan of fairytales, I am not as enthusiastic about fairytale retellings. However, having read this author's previous two books I decided I would give her a shot to change my mind - and I was not disappointed!
Bared Magic accomplishes everything it sets out to do - it's familiar enough that I had no trouble immersing myself in the world, but fresh enough to keep me interested. The lore of the world introduces enough of interest to spark intrigue without slowing the story's relatively quick pace. The characters are interesting, likable and compelling - and while I did feel the romance between Wynne and Callum moved a bit more quickly than I normally like, this did not make the story of characters any less fun. If you're looking for a fun, sexy paranormal romance with a decent helping of fantasy and fairy tales, look no further.
I thoroughly enjoy “twisted” fairytales because we have a feeling of familiarity that veers off into something exciting and new. This story is a reimagining of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. As expected, Wynne, our “Goldilocks” who is a Siphon (Fae and human parentage), finds a cabin in the woods. Trying to escape her pursuers who were after the “witch”, she ran into the cabin and threw the bolt, hoping they would not break in. Although they did not break the door down, she heard one tell the other that the owner would not tolerate breaking his door, so they instead settled in to watch the cabin for her to sneak out.
Wynne helped herself to a bowl of stew and went back to the dark bedroom to eat it so she could hide the bowl if the owner returned. But as soon as she sat on the bed, extreme sleepiness overcame her and the bowl dropped from her hands. Callum Bertram, cursed by a witch to not be able to sleep more than a couple hours, had just that morning purchased a sleeping charm from a hedge witch to get a normal sleep. He had placed it under the pillow and Wynne would be sleeping for at least 8 hours. When the bear shifters, Callum, Brodie, and eldest brother Alasdair, returned home, they chased off the two men, had to break down their door to get in, and found Wynne sleeping soundly amid the spilled stew and broken bowl.
When Wynne woke, Callum and Brodie asked her questions, then Brodie left. Callum chatted with her and fixed her a plate of food. When a mob came to the cabin, Callum took her through a trapdoor into a tunnel that would take them into the woods and away from the danger while his brothers dealt with the mob. When they exited the tunnel, a werewolf attacked and Callum tried not to hurt his out-of-control friend affected by the full moon. Wynne knocked the wolf out with a huge chunk of wood and they stayed the night at the wolf’s cabin since he would not be back. When an exhausted Callum finally fell into a light sleep, she used her Siphon ability to pull the evil curse magic from him. She was safe doing that but could only hold it for a limited time before she would have to put it back into him or another host. But it would let him get the sleep he needed right now. After breakfast, they headed out to get her far away. They were unaware that the evil Ainsley Crichton, Lord of Windholt, had put Clint and others on her trail. He knew exactly what she was and had plans for her. Clint also had plans of his own to make her suffer for getting away from him. And with Callum wounded by a bear trap, could he keep her safe if they caught up to them?
The reader can easily see the connection between Wynne and Callum as they interact and tease with each other. The story line was so good that it made the reader eager to keep reading. Aside from being very well-written, there seemed to be no errors in the reading copy I was using. I was immensely impressed. I highly recommend this story. It will keep you fully invested in their adventure from start to finish, and the characters are amazing.
This’ll become your instant favourite retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Oh, I liked this book immensely - the storyline, the characters, the tongue in cheek writing style. The chapter subtitles and double entendres made me snicker. Could not put it down - the wordplay and storytelling style draws you in and never lets go. I couldn’t wipe a smirk off my face for most of the read. Gimme more! New fave author - found!
Ever wondered why Goldilocks strayed to the cottage of the three bears? Or why the bears were incensed to find her sleeping? Werebears is all I’m going to say, and our Goldilocks , an (alleged) criminal has delish surprises up her sleeve. Come now - Goldie - ever thought why people might be reluctant to give out their true names? Option 1: fae; option 2: they’re on the run.
Love the Scottish monikers of the three werebears. In fact, I can totally hear this book being narrated with a mild Scottish accent. Callum is a darling cinnamon roll who hasn’t slept properly in 21yrs and Wynne is a daredevil who befriends the werebears she antagonises. Loved the interactions, dialogue and the simmering heat between Baby Bear and Goldie! And Baby Bear can cook - ahh, the man is a dream! Loved Goldie coming into her own and finally trusting someone, loved their adventures and the non-detailed schmexy scenes.
Ooh, and lots of more retellings to come, apparently - at least I’m hoping for a bloodthirsty Red Riding Hood one, coz of a hint at a “little red hunter is a trigger-happy psycho that takes pot-shots at bears.” Lol. Earmarking the Woodland Curses series for future spellbinding reads.
The wordplays on famous names don’t bother me that much in this one because it’s snarky. Cumbersnatch Forest, teehee.
Soundbites: “There’s an awful lot of curses going on around here”. Because let’s face it, there are and Wynn might be able to do something about them.
Recommended for lovers of fast-paced humorous NA fairytale retellings with romantasy twists, cinnamon-roll heroes, spunky damsels and HEAs.
Bared Magic is a fun take on a classic. While it has the comforting elements of the original Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Cleveland has added imaginative twists and upped the maturity level with the language and romance.
The story follows Wynne, A.K.A. Goldie, who starts the story by sneaking into the home of some werebears. Instead of being a thoughtless, greedy girl, Goldie is painted as sympathetic and thoughtful. As it turns out, she’s on the run because she’s in possession of a rare and much desired magical power. Like the original tale, she falls asleep in one of the beds, and she’s lucky enough that it’s Callum’s. A protective, endearing character, Callum is one of the werebears, and he and Goldie fall pretty quickly for each other during what becomes a whirlwind adventure. The romance between them is a bit fast, but it’s got the perfect amount of sweet and spice.
I was fortunate enough to win a free promo code for the audio book, and the narrator really brought these wonderful characters to life. Combined with Cleveland’s clever writing, it made for an enjoyable book. For anyone who enjoys fairytales with a twist, Bared Magic should be right up your alley.
Full disclosure, I didn't read the fine print. Specifically, I didn't read the blurb. All I saw was the headline "What happens when Goldilocks finds a bed that's a little TOO right?" What did I see instead? When Goldilocks finds a bed that's a little too tight... So I assumed this was a reinterpretation of Goldilocks and the Three Bears with an erotic twist. About 50% into the book, I experienced bangixiety and realized I needed to re-read the blurb. That's when I understood, this isn't an erotic novel. For those looking for a kinky fairytale, this isn't the book for you. For those looking for a paranormal romance, read on!

Did I ever expect to be crushing on one of the three bears? Definitely did not see that one coming, but absolutely worth it. What starts as a twist on the original Goldilocks tale begs the question: why is Goldie breaking into other people's (and I use the term "people" loosely here) homes? What's she even doing in the forest? BARED MAGIC starts at the point of the tale you think you know, and takes you in unexpected directions, blending magic, action, and romance, in a fast-paced, utterly bingeable read that sets up the next book in the series, while still being a completely satisfying story on its own two (or four) feet. It certainly gave me unexpected feels, rooting for a pairing never hinted at in my childhood storybooks! And it was just right!
Bared Magic is a fun retake of a classic children’s story, revitalized as a more adult retelling. The story pulls in some traditional references to goldilocks and the three bears but veers off into a story of its own. I enjoyed the storyline. Cleveland does a great job of making it a unique version that could easily stand-alone without the classic storyline backdrop. A little magic, some were creatures and an adventure. It works well as a fantasy tale. If you like paranormal romance, this one might also fit the bill. Overall, I would rate it 4.5 stars, but once again, being challenged by the rating system, I round up. Thanks, Sara Cleveland, for a fun, quick read.
Bared Magic is my first Goldilocks retelling and I absolutely loved it!! This story was so much fun, I was hooked by the first chapter. Well written, the author is a fantastic storyteller and the audio narration was amazing and really brought all the characters to life! I can't wait for more!!
Never read a Goldilocks retelling before. It was definitely interesting. Enjoyed the interactions among the brothers--wish we could have seen more of that but I get why we didn't. If you're a fan of sweet fairytale retellings, check this one out.
This was a pretty good and interesting Goldilocks retelling. I really liked the magical twist that the author put on it. I love the idea of shifters and witches. There’s only a few reasons I gave this story four stars instead of five.
The first reason was the lack of chemistry between the two main characters, Callum and Wynne. Although they liked each other and were working together to escape the bad people, I just wasn’t feeling the chemistry between them. I kept trying to figure out why I wasn’t liking the two of them together, and that’s why. They just didn’t click for me.
The second reason is because of a few grammar mistakes. But that honestly didn’t bother me too much. There were just a couple of times where something was spelled wrong. Nothing too major.
I did wish that we would’ve seen more of the other two bears in this story. I kept wondering where they were but they didn’t end up showing up again after the beginning. They would’ve definitely had been able to help Callum and Wynne out.
I loved the reference to another fairytale! I’ll definitely be checking out the next book.
Overall, if you like fairytale retellings, shifters, witches and curses, then you should read this book.

Parents- R / MA- Adult +18 and up Language: R- fairly heavy bad language and lots of f-bombs Violence: PG13- normal to genre - possible trigger scenes to abuse and sexual assault victims Sexual Content: MA / R- pretty heavy adult content- undertones and insinuations "he's thinking with the wrong head", heavy desires, arousal, masturbation scene, prostitutes, naked scenes and a few love making scenes (build up, starting and after)
I was really excited to read this one. It's the first one I have run into that is a remake of Goldilocks' tale and it started really well and then a few chapters into the book the bad language started and the sexual content began kicking up. I loved the characters and the overall plot was fantastic, I just wish it had been cleaner. It's definitely an adult read and one that the fairytale retelling crowd will really enjoy. I would just love to see this one redone for the middle grade reader.
The narrator was a lot of fun to listen to, and I loved his accent. He did a wonderful job with the voices, differentiations and acting.

A Goldilocks retelling featuring werebears, werewolves, werecats, and...a wereweasel? Wynne is a siphon, a type of witch that can suck the powers out of magical creatures and pass it along to someone else. Her kind are feared because with a single touch, she can siphon the very soul out of a werebeing. When she's accused of thievery by a band of rogues, she finds sanctuary in an empty cabin. What she doesn't know is that the occupants of the cabin may be more frightening than the men waiting outside. This was my first shifter romance and I enjoyed the spin on the classic tale. Wynne is feisty and strong willed even when she fears for her life. Callum the werebear's kindness is a whole new experience for her, and their instant attraction develops into a steamy romance. The villains are layered but I wanted to know more of their stories. The ending was the perfect set up for a sequel! I only wish the book was longer. The writing was wonderful, but some areas felt rushed, especially the leap from attraction to a stranger to deeper feelings between Callum and Wynne. Overall, I found them endearing and I hope we see more of them in future books. I really want to know what happens with Wynne's powers!
I never much liked the Goldilocks fairytale, so imagine my surprise when I absolutely ADORED this story! Truth be told besides Wynne’s hair, her nickname and the three bear shifter brothers there isn’t much that was obviously screaming Goldilocks. This book had everything, romance, some mystery, some spice, some good defeats evil, and some suspense. I recommend this to everyone who would like to read a good story – you can’t go wrong with it.
The universe where the story takes place was very well described and integrated – at times it felt like a place which could exist anywhere and everywhere at once. The characters were complex and very well written, I could not get enough of them. They had quirks and were charming, and I almost wanted to meet them. I don’t want to give any spoilers, so I’ll say just this: as a modern woman I felt so respected and appreciated by extension for how well and beautiful Callum treated Wynne :D
I started this before bed for some light reading but I was soon immersed in the story… I ended up staying up until I finished it and then I dreamt about it. It was perfectly charming!.

Bared Magic is a fairytale retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears but this is not your childhood version of the story. The book does starts like you would imagine with Goldilocks finding the bears cabin and falling asleep but then deviates into an whole new world. The author, Sara Cleveland, gives the reader a book filled with many different types of magical beings.
Our two protagonists, Wynne (Goldilocks who is a Siphon) and Callum (a Shifter bear), have quite an adventure. The interaction between these two is enjoyable and believable and a romantic connection will be explored. They will encounter many different types of magical beasts and beings throughout this adventure. There will be times when the reader will get mad at Wynne, especially towards the end of the end of the book. With that being said, once I was a 1/2 way through I found the book very hard to put down.
I found the book very enjoyable left me wanting to find out what will happen in book 2.
If you like fairytale tale retellings, shifter romances, fantasy or books about magic the you will not be disappointed.

A nice variation on a fairy tale. Romantic, exciting and sweet. When Wynne- Goldilocks- takes shelter in the house of the three werebears, she experiences an exciting adventure together with the youngest bear Callum. People are after her because of her special ability, and Callum has taken it upon himself to help her, even if it means leaving his home and brothers. Initially I found the pace of the story slow, and therefore a bit boring. The pace quickened during the story and it became an easy and entertaining read. The story focuses on Callum and Wynne, and occasionally I missed some info about the other characters. It doesn;t need to be extensive, but I would have liked to read a few lines about how Callum;s brothers, and his werewolf friend, are doing after they help Callum and Wynne. It seems like a nice series to me, it ends with the promise of a new story: a variant of Little Red Riding Hood.

I found Bared Magic to be a delightful, light summer read. Sara Cleveland starts with the kernel of the Goldilocks fairy tale and weaves a fantasy romance story full of adventure, magic, and mystery. The worldbuilding goes well beyond the core of the Goldilocks story, bringing the reader sorcery, hedge witches, scheming nobles, werebeasts of many varieties, kidnapping, skullduggery, forest chases, life-threatening combat, and of course, a fun romance that builds slowly and takes some unexpected turns. I also loved the incorporation of a bonus fairy tale in the second half of the story!
The writing is excellent, with strong dialog and pacing. The plot is on the straightforward side but very well done, and I really enjoyed the way the romance between the two main characters developed; there were some moments that were far more real than I'd expected from a fantasy romance. Some of the villains were a bit two-dimensional but some had more nuance. Overall, a charming tale that is a good investment of your reading time.
I listened to the audiobook yesterday on my day off from work and literally could not stop other than to shower. This book was so good. Callum is the perfect fantasy boyfriend / love interest. He was protective but kind and respectful and never pushed Wynn into anything she was uncomfortable with. Consent was key. And even though there was no official romantic relationship (the only knew each other a short time) he followed her when she was in danger (she was taken, he wasn't stalking her) to make sure she was safe. I really liked the MC Wynn/Goldie too, and I loved that she had flaws and trauma but she pushed through and never gave up. Wynn helped Callum with some of the fights even though she wasn't physically strong. She didn't play the part of complete damsel in distress, even though she was constantly getting into dangerous situations. Definitely looking forward to more in this series and also will totally listen to the audiobook again soon.
I really enjoyed BARED MAGIC, a delightful Goldilocks retelling with magic, curses, were-shifters and more. Wynne is a siphon, a half-human, half-fae who can drain the curses of others. If anyone finds out about her abilities, she’ll be enslaved or worse, which leads her on a mad flight through the forest to a cabin owned by three bear-shifters. I loved the bear-shifter guys. They were such great guys. The cabin was cozy and wonderfully described in a fairy tale way, with venison stew bubbling on the stove, spices in jars and just a cozy atmosphere. I loved the chemistry between Wynne and Callum. The world-building and magic systems were nicely fleshed out and I liked the way we learned more about other characters in the world like Rowan (who I hope features in a future book!) as Wynne gets in to trouble at a point and is forced to find allies. Highly recommended for lovers of fairy tale retellings and fantasy romance. I will be eagerly anticipating book two! 5/5 stars.
