Born out of a summer spent in the Adirondacks, Saplings wrestles with our innate desire for belonging, the comfort of finding our place, and the pain of saying goodbye. Atmospheric, the stores within are washed in the natural beauty of the Adirondack Park, from clots of pine trees that cocoon everything within them to the reflection of sunsets dancing across the lake. Saplings graciously invites readers in, allowing them to sit right in the middle of the mundane, all the whole examining the profound moments that speckle an ordinary life.
This was so beautifully written. Even if you didn’t live this specific experience the words of Amanda bring you to anytime you feared what was to come, wished it never ended and then had to learn to say goodbye. Some of these poems took me back to my own experience at camp. But more importantly took me to both my time in dc and also my time now watching my kid grow.
Some favorite poems: in the beginning, 5:40 a.m., resurfacing, the point, us all, the end(‘)s beginning, fleet.
Quote/poem “us all” It’s not the single blade That makes the lawn so beautiful, but all of them Together
Quote: Who knew the lack of something Could be so Suffocating?
Wow, this collection of poetry and prose is stunning! Amanda Calabro’s writing not only invokes the senses of living amongst the pines, but also transports you to feel the grief of parting friendship. Everything about this collection is so masterfully done, and I am super excited to see where Calabro goes next in her blooming writing career.
