While I do love this story and read it a couple times when I was younger, the story isn't the best part. There used to be this store at the mall that sold little figurines and whatnot and one of their displays was these books along with the little figurines of its characters. My parents used to buy me one of these every Christmas and I loved them so much. I had the bad guy, I think his name was N'Borg and I had a couple little wizards and even a good sized dragon. Each figurine holds a little crystal, in the stories, the krystals are their magical power sources. It was all pretty awesome.
I’ve had this book on my shelf forever so I finally decided to give it a try. I liked the fantasy history aspect. However, I think I would have preferred a bit more structure to the story. I liked the individual stories, but I found it hard to know where they fit in the storyline. I liked how it had an illustration for each chapter even though they were never how I was picturing the creatures. I think this is a fun middle grade fantasy read, especially with the illustrations.
By far one of the worst books I have ever read. Nothing made sense. It was a book of short story’s explaining each race of a made up land. Absolutely no need to read this book. If you want fantasy go find it elsewhere. Do not waste your time.
The book itself apologizes for not being a very good read. It's told in little vignettes that ultimately tie together but leave a depth of character wanting.
I'm not a real big fan of fantasy, but this was an amusing novel to read. Pretty light for me, considering that I call most fantasy heavy reading.
I like the structure of the writing - it's basis falls on a scribe, writing down the history of his land. It is made up of anecdotes, most explaining the history of the different peoples in the land. The drawings within my copy were gorgeous and colorful - if only more books could have those kinds of wonderful illustrations!
But I'm not interested enough to search out the sequels of this book. The plotline itself was a little disjointed - the author jumped around too fast without adequate transition or conclusion of any specific occurrence. Plus, it was difficult to deal with the archaic, and may I say, weak dialogue.
I loved this book. I had never heard of it, found it on my shelves from my Boyfriends collection. Picked it up read it in 3 days. It reminded me of the tales I use to read as a child, a wonderful fantasy world, that simply enthralled me. I wouldn't say it is a KIDS book, more like a young teens book, well written, entertaining and easy to get lost in. I am looking forward to starting the second one I have and wish I had found it sooner.
This book was really enjoyable. They succeeded in making it feel like you picked up a recorder's scroll of events of a world not our own. The characters were great and it was a very easy and fast read. However, just like the ending of a scroll, the ending is too abrupt for my taste. I have not researched if there is a sequel yet- that would provide some redeeming grace, but if there is not then I am very disappointed in the ending.
The book accompanies a series of adorable figurines, and I really wanted to like this book. However, the story wasn't that interesting although the illustrations are gorgeous.
