Meet the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz―once just a girl from Havana, Cuba, who loved to sing. Her soulful voice, compelling charm, and unstoppable determination led to her meteoric rise to fame, opening the door for Latinx performers everywhere. Her booming career took her from the Sonora Matancera to the Fania All-Stars, with the rising popularity of salsa, a genre born of Afro-Cuban musical stylings. Six decades and more than seventy albums later, Celia’s influence still has an undeniable hold on today’s music.
Hispanic Star proudly celebrates Hispanic and Latinx heroes who have made remarkable contributions to American culture and have been undeniable forces in shaping its future.
Hispanic Star: Celia Cruz is a wonderful book for young readers to get to know Celia Cruz. It introduces her and her upbringing quickly letting readers know about her strength in believing in herself. I love that it's more than just stating facts about her legendary career. It mentions the struggles she had to face like being exiled by Fidel Castro and the music business wanting to make her an English-speaking/singing artist. Celia was and will always be an icon, especially in the Latinx community. Her confidence, tenacity, and love of life continue to shine bright.
Informative and thoughtful exposition of Celia Cruz' life and career. The author REALLY wants the reader to go and listen to Celia Cruz' music and breaks up the account several times with directions to the reader. (I found this somewhat jarring at first, but then I saw the technique as a true testament to the importance of Celia Cruz to the author and to Cubans and Cuban-Americans.) Seems to be written for an older audience, but not totally inaccessible to a middle school crowd.
