Batman: O Impostor Vol.01

Rate this book

The Batman is a new vigilante that seems to be cleaning up crime in Gotham City - but at the expense of big business. As the rich elite grumble about lost revenue, footage emerges of Batman seemingly executing prisoners on a rooftop - but is it the real Batman… or an imposter?

Mattson Tomlin, one of the screenwriters on the upcoming R-Batz movie, writes a grittier, more realistic version of the early days of Batman in Batman: The Imposter #1, and it’s pretty dull stuff!

It’s just not that interesting to see familiar characters looking/behaving slightly differently than normal. Dr. Leslie Thompkins here is opposed to Bruce being Batman and has a no-nonsense attitude towards his behaviour, and there are new versions of Ventriloquist and Ratcatcher (an unusual addition), while Bruce looks to be around the same age as Robert Pattinson.

The “GCPD at odds with Batman” angle has been done many times before, as has the mistaken identity thing, and there’s nothing that enthralling about new character Detective Blair Wong as she sets out to uncover the identity of Batman - she’s just a regular decent cop character going through an investigation.

I’m not opposed to realistic takes on Batman (some of Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo’s books are among the best in the Batman canon), and this isn’t a terrible comic - it’s got good art from Andrea Sorrentino and it’s competently written overall - but Tomlin doesn’t write Batman in a unique or compelling way and the story really didn’t grab me. Batman: The Imposter #1 is a birruva snoozer unfortunately. Here’s hoping it’s not indicative of the upcoming Batman movie!

4.5 stars. Wow this was damn good!! In this book, Bruce has been batman for about 3 years. In that time he has been making an impact. Criminals and corrupt corporations have been feeling his presence and have been losing money. There’s a detective Wong who is on the case. She’s called into a meeting at GCPD because video has surfaced of Batman killing 3 people. Batman and us, the readers, learn this is an imposter. However, GCPD doesn’t know that. Now it’s up the Bruce to find this imposter as the police begin to tighten up on finding him. Picked this up on a whim. So glad I did. Great stuff. Sorrentino’s art and panel layout are great as usual.

A solid look into a young Bruce Wayne, more grounded, and dealing with a copycat batman who kills. Interesting idea so far.

Very promising start. I'm looking forward to reading more.

Love Andrea Sorrentino's art. The conflicts being chosen to explore are interesting. Early Batman stories are always interesting because you still have some built in conflicts you can't have later in Batman's career.

Detective Wong is probably my favorite part of this, her character is really interesting and I want to see how she plays further into the story.

How Bruce is characterized in this isn't my favorite way of doing it. I'm of the type that prefers him to be a bit softer something more in line with the animated series or the Snyder Capullo run.

Inherently I will naturally have problems with a more grounded take on Batman. I have liked more grounded Batman stories but my taste leans much more now into the fun nature of detective adventure stories. Where the narrative takes it just seriously enough for it to work but also doesn't forget how silly the premise can be.

This is a very serious take on Batman. About his anger and rage driving him in his pursuit of criminals, and I think this issue is done very well, it's paced well after the first scene and know where to put the focus on different characters and also when to let the art do the work.

My issues all stem from the tone or how it's handling a Batman story but if the serious angry Batman is your thing this story is probably going to be your thing.

description

description

Finally read Volume 1 of this limited series on @dc Universe Infinite. Frankly, Batman The Imposter had me when they announced that @andreasorrentinoart and Jordie Bellaire were on board.

This is truly a dream team when it comes to panel layout and art. At 49 pages this book is already a hefty read, but set aside an evening to revel in the visual artistry of two creators at their peak.

The story is captivating too (making this a brilliant volume to gift someone who enjoys comics- based films but hasn't read the source material yet).

Mild spoilers ahead..............

Bruce finds himself reluctantly entering into a therapeutic relationship after being blackmailed by a psychiatrist who knows he is Batman and is familiar with him from childhood. Meanwhile, an Imposter is carrying out public executions that make the GCPD turn on Batman. Original story ideas, carried out well.

Read it on DC Infinite or pick up multiple volumes at your neighborhood comic book store.

After Dark Crisis, It felt refreshing to read something super grounded and gritty again. The artwork and panelling is unbelievable which matched the tone of the book. While we have seen this story done before, the characters make it all worthwhile. Interested to see where it goes from here.

I love the Black Label comics! Even though I am a long time Batman fan, this story is a really solid start for everyone who wants to begin reading Batman comics but is overwhelmed by the many other DC runs and expansive comic universes!

Gonna give this 5 stars on art alone. Holy cow, is Andrea Sorrentino a genius. I’m instantly intrigued to catch more of their stuff; it’s this gritty but beautiful birthday cake of gothic imagery and Jordie Bellaire brings amazing colors to compliment.

Story is pretty good so far. I’m interested to see where this goes with the Rat character and Bruce’s therapist. Hell of an issue #1.
