Rate this book
One summer evening, a reckless act of love changed her life forever...

Now nine years later, Cassie Wortham has returned to Louisiana, to the lush home of her parents, to the roots left behind in the wake of desperate acts. She's been living a nightmare since she left. Now she feels safe enough to come home.

But is she safe from Austin McQuire? The man she brazenly seduced. The man who gave her a son he doesn't know exists. He's still as sexy and disturbing as ever...and still as forbidden.

The danger arrives in Louisiana--a violent man determined to have Cassie and her son for his own. Terrified and alone with her secrets, now Cassie must risk everything to protect her son by turning to the only man who can save--or damn--them both. Mary Lynn Baxter was born on 28 July 1943 in Lufkin, Texas, USA, where she bred, home of the cowboy - hero of the Western romance, which is one of the most popular of the category's sub-genres. She would be the first to say that it's her background that gives her a unique feel for romance writing.

Since she was a young girl, books and reading have been an important part of her life. Only after she read all the "goodies" in her public library did her mother encourage her to buy Harlequin romances, then 35 cents each. Wow! Those reading years laid the background for her decision to major in Library Science at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, and become a school librarian.

After eight years of working in various school systems, she felt a need to do something different. What she wanted was to open a bookstore. With the help of her husband, Leonard, and her mother, Mary Lynn did just that. For over 20 years she sold books, and loved every minute of it. Then Mary Lynn decided she needed a new challenge. Following an intense amount of pushing and prodding from her husband she took the plunge and tried her hand at writing.

After months of agonising and chewing her nails, she finally mailed All our Tomorrows to Silhouette books in February 1981. One year later it was published as a Silhouette Special Edition. Now, over 40 books later, she's still writing. Mary Lynn can't think of anything else she'd rather do with her time and energy. She surfaces from her writing, she's a voracious reader. But this petite dynamo is always happy to tumble out of her world of fiction into her local fitness center for a bracing workout. She's also dedicated to her volunteer work... and still manages to fit in plenty of quality time with her family at their home in Lufkin, Texas.

It was a decent read but irritated me mostly specially James-cause he is good preacher but a lousy father and Cassie for rejecting Austin and his love constantly,i was fed up with her even though Austin keeps assuring her and tells her constantly he loves her she always pushes him away and says hurtful things causing him pain but then she comes to her senses and amidst those betrayals and hurt still Austin forgives her they have the HEA

There are people who are dumb and people who are Too Stupid to Live (TSTL).

I kept telling myself to stop listening, but it was like watching a train wreck - you don't want to see but you can't stop looking. If anyone had been looking in my car, they would have seen this woman yelling at her dashboard. Luckily, I listened to an abridged version.

These two people are just not real. The book starts out with the man, 14 years older, having sex with his best friend's daughter on her 18th birthday. Yeah. Yuck. I guess we're supposed to think that they're so attracted, they couldn't help themselves. But he's 32, so it doesn't seem likely, does it? She, of course, got pregnant.

Nine years later, she walks back into their lives. Her parents are barely tolerable and intolerant. She submits to their disapproval, disrespect, patronization. She doesn't want to run away again. It would be just so bad for her son. Except that her "Daddy," being the self-righteous reverend he is, decides that her son would be better if he was reunited with his crazy father. Her dad's friend (oh, yeah - he's also her parents' brother-in-law. He married our heroine's aunt.) hates her and badly wants to have sex with her. She badly wants to have sex with him though she's terrified of him finding out about the son.

Many in this story are TSTL and not one person is normal. Maybe the son, but that could have been a result of selective abridgment.

This is another book I picked out of the box left to me, another I wouldn’t have normally picked out because the 14 year older step uncle lover makes my skin crawls and out of spite the heroine marries a man she doesn’t like, a violent abusive man. After nine years she returns home. Don’t even get me started on the parents: disapproving, disrespectful, patronizing and her self-righteous reverend “Dad” is firm in his belief that her son should be reunited with his “crazy” father but to keep her son safe from that maniac she’ll have to tell his real father: Austin. Yep the creepy step uncle. To me everything about this book could be described in one word: YUCK!
